Why

Nothing measures how long people play at the booth or which game they pick. The Heroes vs. Villains booth cut needs real session lengths from the playtest, and the post-event report needs counts by game and hour.

What

app/booth_log.gd writes JSON Lines to a local folder, one file per run of the game (sessions-<local time>-<process id>.jsonl), so a watchdog relaunch or a second copy never writes to another run's file:

{"event":"launch","launch":"2026-11-30T09:58:12.345","time":"2026-11-30T09:58:12","version":"0.1.0"}
{"event":"start","launch":"2026-11-30T09:58:12.345","session":1,"game":"heroes_vs_villains","time":"2026-11-30T10:02:03"}
{"event":"end","launch":"2026-11-30T09:58:12.345","session":1,"game":"heroes_vs_villains","time":"2026-11-30T10:04:26","duration_s":143.2,"ended_by":"idle","retries":0}
  • A session is one visit to a game route: Heroes vs. Villains, Code City Brawl, a platformer level, or the runner (runner_game). Menus and the hub end a session but never start one. Re-entering the same game, as the runner's and platformer's Retry do through AppRouter.go(), counts as a retry.
  • ended_by is menu, idle (booth mode's idle return) or quit (a window close). A start with no end means the game stopped without quitting: a crash, a power cut or a kill.
  • Durations use the monotonic clock. Each event opens, appends and closes the file, so a crash loses at most one line.
  • No personal data and no network. The only fields are the game, local times, the duration, the end reason and the retry count. The suite fails if any other field appears.
  • A write failure turns logging off with one warning; gameplay is never affected.

AppRouter:

  • --booth logs to the user://booth/ folder.
  • --session-log=<folder> picks another folder and also works without --booth, for playtests.
  • Nothing is logged otherwise, so normal play is unchanged.
  • go() takes an optional reason (default "menu"); the idle return passes "idle", and a forced quit ends the session as "quit". No caller changes.

tools/booth/sessions_report.py summarizes one or more booth folders or log files: sessions per game (with unfinished ones counted) and the median, mean and P90 length, end reasons, starts by hour. It skips and names malformed lines, and refuses a --csv target that is one of the logs. --csv writes one row per session for the ROI report. Standard library only. Its unit tests run in a new lint step.

Docs: the "Run it at a booth" section of docs/builds.md gains a Session log bullet, where user:// lives on each OS, and how to summarize.

Testing (Godot 4.7.1, macOS)

Check Result
tests/booth_session_log.gd (new) flag parsing; child launches with and without --booth and --session-log, in a throwaway user-data root; a real window-close quit in a child process; retry, menu, idle and quit endings; one file per run; an unwritable folder; documented fields only. A standalone run leaves the real user data untouched.
python3 tools/tests/run_tests.py --jobs 4 55 passed, 0 failed, 8 skipped (before review fixes; booth suites rerun after)
python3 tools/checks/exit_leak.py pass
python3 -m unittest discover -s tools/booth -v 13 tests pass

Not covered: a real booth day. The log's numbers start meaning something at the playtest.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Booth mode can log game sessions, including start and end times, duration, retries, and exit reason. Choose a custom log folder, or use the default location; custom logging also works outside booth mode.
    • Review session summaries with per-game statistics, retry totals, end reasons, and unfinished sessions, or export session details as CSV.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Quitting during a transition is blocked unless the quit is forced; forced quits exit immediately.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on log locations, recorded details, and report commands.

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Nothing measures how long people play at the booth or which game they
pick. The booth cut for Heroes vs. Villains needs real session lengths,
and the post-event report needs counts.

- app/booth_log.gd appends JSON Lines to a local file: a launch line
per run, then a start and an end line per game session. An end
carries the duration (monotonic clock), how the session ended (menu,
idle or quit) and how many retries it held. Nothing about players is
recorded and nothing uses the network. Each event opens, appends and
closes the file, so a crash loses at most one line; a start with no
end marks a crash, power cut or kill. A write failure turns logging
off with a warning and never touches gameplay.
- AppRouter starts the log with --booth (user://booth/sessions.jsonl),
or --session-log=<path> with or without --booth, for playtests.
go() reports each route change; the idle return passes "idle", and
a forced quit ends the session as "quit". Menus end a session but
never start one; re-entering the same game counts as a retry.
- tools/booth/sessions_report.py summarizes one or more logs (per game
sessions, median, mean and P90 length, end reasons, starts by hour,
unfinished sessions) and can write one CSV row per session. Its unit
tests run in the lint job.
- tests/booth_session_log.gd covers flag parsing, child launches with
and without the flags, retries, menu, idle and quit endings, an
unwritable path, and that the log holds only the documented fields.

📝 Walkthrough

The game can optionally record booth launches and game sessions to local JSON Lines files. A command-line tool summarizes those logs and exports session rows as CSV. Tests, CI, and booth documentation cover the logging and reporting behavior.

The report tool pairs session events and summarizes counts, durations, retries, ending reasons, start hours, and unfinished sessions. It supports CSV output and rejects invalid end events and CSV targets that match input logs. CI runs the report tests, and the booth documentation describes log paths and report commands.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 57a4b

Booth logging is opt-in, and ordinary local runs use separate files. Runs sharing a custom folder across hosts can still collide and corrupt analytics records; the impact is limited to logs, so the PR is mergeable with that bounded risk understood.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 57a4b

The change remains local and does not add network access or privileges. The main security concern is that imported log content passes directly into spreadsheet CSV cells without formula neutralization. Exploitation requires control of an imported log or filename and a spreadsheet that evaluates the resulting cells.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new reporting boundary copies imported log strings and source filenames directly into spreadsheet-oriented CSV cells without formula neutralization. An attacker able to supply or alter a selected log or filename can introduce formula-leading cell content. Evaluation depends on the spreadsheet used to open the export; normal game-generated records constrain this exposure but the importer does not enforce their provenance or string vocabulary.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Exposure is bounded to files accessible to the existing game/reporting processes and downstream report consumers. The CSV concern requires attacker influence over selected input content or paths plus operator export and spreadsheet opening; no remotely reachable or cross-tenant attack path is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A crafted game, launch, timestamp, ending-reason, or source-path value can reach a CSV cell unchanged. CSV quoting preserves field structure but does not neutralize formula-leading values. This is a newly introduced export path; actual formula evaluation and subsequent effects depend on the downstream spreadsheet.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The CLI accepts operator-selected files and folders without authenticating producer provenance. It validates end-record consistency and finite nonnegative durations, deduplicates inputs by filesystem identity, and rejects CSV targets identifying an input log. These controls protect parsing and source preservation, not spreadsheet interpretation.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Router transitions remain serialized, failed scene changes do not advance analytics, and repeated end calls do nothing after the active game is cleared. Booth menu-quit suppression remains in place, while forced window close attempts to finish analytics before exit. Logging failure does not add a new authorization or routing decision.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Apply a spreadsheet-safe export policy to every string-valued CSV cell, including source paths, and document the trust expectations for imported logs. Producer constraints alone do not protect independently supplied files.

Validate end fields before updating the session.

A malformed matching end record can update session.duration_s before validation fails. The parser then records the line as skipped, but the session remains finished and affects duration statistics.

Validate all end fields into local variables before mutating session.

The CSV target is opened for truncation without excluding input log files.

The report reads successfully and then irreversibly replaces the raw session log with CSV.

This can occur when: An operator passes sessions.jsonl as both an input and --csv target, including through a path alias or symlink.

The suite assumes the real default booth log is absent, then appends to it without cleanup; its other fixed log files are also left behind. This conflicts with the path instruction to keep persistent files "isolated/cleaned up."

Absence and exact-count assertions fail, and test sessions can contaminate real booth analytics.

This can occur when: The documented standalone test runs twice in the same user directory, or runs where booth logs already exist.

Isolate session-log files per process.

When two instances receive the same --session-log=<path>, BoothLog._write() opens that path, calls seek_end(), and then calls store_line(...) without cross-process coordination. Records can be lost or malformed.

Make the logger derive a unique file path for each process from the requested path, and print the resulting path. Do not rely on an unenforced instruction to choose different files. sessions_report.py already accepts multiple log paths, so reporting can retain all writers' data.

NaN and Infinity can be stored as finished durations. summary() then passes them to clock(), which raises instead of producing a report. A sufficiently large JSON integer can also raise OverflowError during conversion, and read() does not catch it.

Add a same-file reinitialization test.

The writable-log test initializes router once with LOG. It does not reopen that file and append a second launch. The child-process checks use separate log paths. Therefore, the suite does not detect loss of existing records after reinitialization or duplicate launch identifiers across launches.

Add a focused case that writes to the same log with two logger instances, then asserts that both launch records remain and their launch identifiers differ. Keep this as a coverage improvement separate from the production identity issue in booth_log.gd:33.

Addresses CodeRabbit review 5541040174 on #74:
- sessions_report.py converts every end field before touching the
session, so a malformed end leaves it unfinished. NaN, infinite,
negative and overflowing durations count as malformed lines.
- The per-game table counts every visit, with a new Unfinished column;
lengths and retries still come from finished sessions, and a game
with only unfinished visits is listed with dashes.
- --csv refuses a target that resolves to one of the input logs.
- Launch ids carry milliseconds, so a relaunch appending to the same
log never reuses one. A test appends two launches to one file.
- tests/booth_session_log.gd gives its child launches a throwaway
user-data root and finds the log from the path the game prints, so
a standalone run never reads or writes a real booth log. It removes
every file it creates and guards the pairing loop's indices.
- A child process (tests/support/session_log_quit.gd, skipped as a
suite) quits through AppRouter.quit_game(true), and the suite checks
its "quit" end, instead of calling end("quit") directly.

Re review 5541040174: the follow-ups and nitpicks are handled in 93a6b7a, except one, which I've answered below.

Follow-ups:

  • sessions_report.py: validate end fields first. Fixed. Every field is converted before the session changes.
  • sessions_report.py: non-finite durations. Fixed. NaN, infinite and negative durations count as malformed, and OverflowError is caught.
  • sessions_report.py: CSV over an input log. Fixed. --csv refuses a target that resolves to an input, comparing resolved paths.
  • sessions_report.py: per-game count. Fixed. Sessions counts every visit and a new Unfinished column shows the open ones. A game with only unfinished visits is listed with - for its lengths.
  • booth_session_log.gd: default booth log in the real user dir. Fixed. Child launches get a throwaway HOME, XDG, APPDATA and USERPROFILE root, and the suite reads the path the game prints. It removes every file it creates. A standalone run outside the runner left the real user-data folder unchanged.
  • booth_session_log.gd: index guard. Fixed. The pairing loop also requires starts.size() == 3.
  • booth_log.gd: per-process log files. Not changed. At a booth, the watchdog runs exactly one game, and a second copy would also fight it for the fullscreen display. One file per day per machine also keeps log collection simple for booth staff. A playtest that runs two copies can pass a different --session-log to each, and the report already merges several files. The real risk behind this finding was two runs sharing a launch id within one file, and that is fixed: launch ids now carry milliseconds.

Nitpicks:

  • Same-file reinitialization. Added: two loggers append to one file and keep two distinct launch ids.
  • Accepted router quit. Added: tests/support/session_log_quit.gd runs as a child process, quits through AppRouter.quit_game(true), and the suite checks its quit end. suites.toml skips the helper as a suite.
  • Mixed-state fixture. Added: code_city_brawl now has one finished and one unfinished visit, and the test asserts 2 sessions with 1 unfinished.
  • Rejected matching end. Added: four malformed ends for an open session leave it unfinished, with its fields unchanged.
  • Same-path CSV. Added: the test passes the log as its own --csv target through a ./ alias and checks the bytes are unchanged.

Local checks: booth_session_log and booth_mode pass, and the report's tests run 11 of 11.

Prevent concurrent booth processes from overwriting the shared log.

If two processes select the same log path, both can observe that the file does not exist and open it with WRITE. That mode truncates an existing file. For an existing file, separate seek_end() and write operations also do not coordinate the processes. Records can disappear or overlap, despite the distinct launch IDs. Use a single writer, a per-process file, or cross-process synchronization. Godot 4.7.1 documents the truncating WRITE mode and the file-cursor behavior. (github.com)

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Separate a recovered launch from an incomplete final line.

If a process stops during store_line(), the file can end with a partial JSON record and no newline. On relaunch, seek_end() places the next launch record directly after that fragment. The report then skips the combined line and loses the new launch event too. Check the final byte of an existing file and add a newline before the next record when needed. Godot 4.7.1 specifies that seek_end() moves the cursor and store_line() writes from that position. (github.com)

Addresses CodeRabbit review 5541172249 on #74:
- Two runs never share a file now. The log is a folder (user://booth by
  default; --session-log=<folder>) holding sessions-<local time>-<pid>.jsonl
per run, so concurrent copies can't truncate or interleave each other,
and a line cut off by a crash can't merge with the next run's first
line. The game prints its file's path; the report reads whole folders.
- An end event must name the session's game and carry non-empty string
time and ended_by; otherwise it is skipped and the session stays open.
- --csv is compared with each input by file identity (samefile), so a
hardlink to a log is refused too.

Re review 5541172249: both inline items are fixed in aa04e70 (replies are in the threads). The two outside-diff items are fixed in the same commit:

  • booth_log.gd: concurrent processes overwriting the shared log. Each run now writes its own file: the log is a folder (user://booth by default, or --session-log=<folder>) holding sessions-<local time>-<process id>.jsonl per run. Two copies can't truncate or interleave each other, whatever path they're given. The game prints its file's path, and sessions_report.py reads whole folders. The suite checks that two runs write separate files under distinct launch ids. This also settles the earlier per-process file suggestion in review 5541040174.
  • booth_log.gd: a partial final line joining the next launch. A run only ever appends to its own file, so a line cut off by a crash stays the last line of that run's file. The report skips and names it, and the next run starts a new file.

The PR description is updated for the folder layout.
