Why

Booth mode (#43) handles players who walk away, but nothing brings the game back after a crash or a freeze. The booth Mac would also still sleep, install updates, show notifications and put up crash dialogs over the game. Staff have no written procedure for setting up, recovering, or swapping to the spare. This is the largest booth risk that no issue covers.

What

Hang detection in the game. --heartbeat=<path> (app/booth_heartbeat.gd, added by AppRouter only when passed) rewrites the file with the Unix time every two seconds:

  • It keeps writing while a game has the tree paused, because a paused game is not a hung one.
  • It writes a temporary file and renames it over the heartbeat, so the watchdog never reads half a number.
  • A failed write warns once and keeps trying.

tools/booth/watchdog.sh runs on macOS's bash 3.2 and on Linux:

  • It launches the game with --heartbeat after the game's own --, adding the -- if missing, and refuses a game command that sets its own. Without --heartbeat, the file lives in a new private folder (mktemp -d, mode 700) that is removed at exit.
  • It relaunches the game whenever it exits. The wait doubles after each short run (2 s up to 30 s) and resets after a stable minute.
  • It SIGTERMs a game whose heartbeat is older than 45 s, after a 60 s startup grace, then SIGKILLs it if it ignores the SIGTERM. --hang 0 turns this off for builds without the heartbeat.
  • SIGTERM, SIGINT or SIGHUP stops the game, then the watchdog. The handler only sets a flag, checked right after each launch and in every wait. A --stop-file stops relaunching for maintenance; a stale stop file is removed at startup, and the watchdog stops if it can't be.

tools/booth/macos/setup.sh prints its plan and changes nothing unless passed --apply:

  • It copies the watchdog to ~/Library/Application Support/HoppyBooth/ and installs a LaunchAgent with RunAtLoad, and KeepAlive unless the watchdog exits cleanly. The agent runs the app's executable (read from its Info.plist, as an absolute path) with -- --booth [--route=…].
  • Before changing anything, it records each setting it will change in settings-before.tsv, once.
  • It removes the download quarantine.
  • pmset: no system, display or disk sleep, no Power Nap, restart after a power cut.
  • No screen saver, no automatic macOS or App Store updates, no crash report dialogs.
  • It lists what macOS won't let a script do: automatic login, Do Not Disturb, the display, volume and controllers.
  • --undo [--apply] removes the agent and restores exactly the recorded values. Without a record it changes no setting, lists what to restore by hand, and exits 1.

docs/booth-runbook.md covers the pack list, one-time setup, each morning, what staff will see during the show, stopping for maintenance, swapping to the spare, collecting the session logs (#74), troubleshooting, and teardown. The README's booth section and docs/builds.md link to it.

Testing (macOS, Godot 4.7.1)

Check Result
tests/booth_heartbeat.gd (new) flag parsing; a child launch with --heartbeat writes the current time and leaves no temp file; it keeps beating with the tree paused; an unwritable path only warns
tools/booth/test_watchdog.py (new) runs the real script against a stand-in game: relaunch after exit, the backoff cap, restart of a hung game (signal 15), a healthy game left alone and stopped on SIGTERM, heartbeat argument placement, --hang 0, the stop file, usage errors. Passes under /bin/bash 3.2.
tools/booth/test_macos_setup.py (new) the plan and undo output, the generated LaunchAgent parsed with plistlib (escaped paths, relative --app), an unreadable app, usage errors. --apply and --undo --apply run against logging stand-ins for every command that changes settings: a round trip, restoring a prior value, refusing without a record, and an injected failure. Those tests run only on Linux (CI), so they can never touch a real Mac.
End to end with the real game watchdog.sh ran headless Godot with --booth --route=heroes_vs_villains. The heartbeat stayed fresh; after kill -STOP, the watchdog logged no heartbeat for 7 s, restarted the game and stopped cleanly on SIGTERM.
python3 tools/tests/run_tests.py --jobs 4 56 passed, 0 failed, 9 skipped
shellcheck, ruff, gdlint on new and changed files clean

CI gains a shellcheck step. The booth unit tests run through the tools/booth step that #74 added.

Not covered: I have not run setup.sh --apply on any Mac; it changes system settings and needs the real booth machine. Windows kiosk settings aren't covered either. The rehearsal (#49) should run the setup and the runbook end to end.

…etup and a staff runbook

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Booth mode (#43) handles idle players, but nothing restarts the game
after a crash or a hang, the Mac still sleeps, updates and shows
notifications, and staff have no written procedure.

- --heartbeat=<path> (app/booth_heartbeat.gd) rewrites the file with
the Unix time every two seconds, also while a game pauses the tree.
It writes a temp file and renames it, and warns once on failure.
- tools/booth/watchdog.sh (bash 3.2 and Linux) launches the game with
--heartbeat, relaunches it when it exits with a doubling backoff
that resets after a stable run, and SIGTERMs (then SIGKILLs) a game
whose heartbeat goes stale. SIGTERM stops game and watchdog; a stop
  file stops relaunching for maintenance.
- tools/booth/macos/setup.sh prints its plan by default and changes
nothing; --apply installs the watchdog as a LaunchAgent (RunAtLoad,
KeepAlive), clears the quarantine, and turns off sleep, Power Nap,
the screen saver, automatic updates and crash dialogs, with restart
after a power cut. --undo reverses it. It lists the settings macOS
can't script: automatic login, Do Not Disturb, display, volume.
- docs/booth-runbook.md: pack list, setup, mornings, the show,
maintenance stops, swapping to the spare, collecting the session
logs, troubleshooting and teardown. README and docs/builds.md link it.
- Tests: tests/booth_heartbeat.gd, plus unit tests that run the real
watchdog against a stand-in game (exit, hang, healthy, stop file,
arguments, usage) and setup.sh's plan and undo (never --apply on a
  Mac). CI shellchecks both scripts.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to e1de8

The watchdog now honors stop requests before relaunching the game. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 6321d

The recovery mechanism is local and explicitly enabled, but interrupted setup can undermine restoration of machine-wide update settings. The operating procedure also recommends disabling FileVault without including its restoration in teardown. A narrow shutdown race can defeat a stop request.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The restoration baseline is written directly to its final path, and subsequent setup accepts any existing file without checking completeness. If initial recording is interrupted after only some rows, a retry skips recording and disables every configured update setting. Undo then restores only the recorded rows and can report success and delete the incomplete baseline, leaving machine-wide security-update settings disabled. Normal snapshot retention and failed-command retry handling do not detect this sequence.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new operating workflow directs staff to enable automatic login and states that FileVault must be off. Neither setup undo nor the after-show procedure records or prompts restoration of FileVault. Staff following this workflow can return a machine to ordinary use without its former pre-login data protection; the exposure extends beyond the game to local data on each configured Mac. This requires an operator to follow the manual instruction and is not an automatic encryption change by the script.
  • Low · reliability · inferred: The watchdog clears stop_requested after checking it at child exit. A termination signal delivered between that check and the reset is overwritten, allowing another game launch instead of the promised terminal stop. This weakens the supervisor's maintenance and cancellation boundary. Steady-state SIGTERM handling and the separate stop-file path do not eliminate this narrow interleaving.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Process recovery authority is limited to the launched child, but configuration exposure reaches the entire configured Mac through machine-wide update preferences. Following the manual automatic-login and FileVault guidance also affects protection of local data, not merely the booth account's game state. The runbook applies the workflow to both primary and spare Macs.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The supported security risks are incomplete restoration of update policy after interrupted recording and omission of FileVault restoration from teardown. The first requires an interruption followed by retry; the second requires an operator to disable FileVault. Subsequent exploitation depends on separate software or physical-access threats; no specific remote exploit chain was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Local launch arguments select the executable and heartbeat path. Commands use argument arrays, and plist values are XML-escaped. System preference writes are routed through sudo rather than an unprivileged fallback. The standalone heartbeat default uses a private temporary directory, while the generated LaunchAgent selects a persistent user-directory path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Backoff, grace periods, termination escalation, and heartbeat replacement provide useful failure containment. Recovery guarantees nevertheless depend on an unvalidated restoration record, and cancellation is not monotonic because the loop can clear a pending stop request.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Serialize apply and undo, validate a complete restoration record, and publish it atomically before changing host settings. Reject incomplete records rather than treating file existence as a valid baseline.
  • proposed — Treat any FileVault change as a separately authorized security exception with explicit ownership and post-event restoration verification, rather than an untracked prerequisite for automatic login.

⚠️ Potential issue | 🟡 Minor | 💤 Low value

The game is launched before its PID is stored, leaving a possible signal-handling window in which stop sees an empty child variable.

The watchdog can exit successfully without terminating the newly launched game, leaving an unsupervised kiosk process.

This can occur when: SIGTERM, SIGINT, or SIGHUP is handled after the background process starts but before child=$! executes.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Serialize an absolute executable path in the LaunchAgent.

When --app is relative, executable validation uses the setup process's current directory, but ProgramArguments stores the relative $binary unchanged. The generated plist has no WorkingDirectory, so launchd can resolve the executable from a different directory and fail to start the game.

Normalize the executable path to an absolute path before building ProgramArguments. Add a plan-only regression test that passes a relative --app path and asserts that the generated executable argument is absolute.

Preserve the Mac’s pre-setup settings during undo.

When --undo --apply runs without saved pre-setup values, it must not run sudo pmset restoredefaults or delete preference keys. It must report that manual restoration is required and leave the booth changes in place. Do not report successful restoration.

A complete snapshot/restore implementation is high effort. A guard that prevents destructive cleanup when no snapshot exists is localized, low effort, and high reward.

When an undo cleanup command fails, the script reports the failure but still exits with status zero. Return a nonzero status for non-benign failures while preserving success for absent settings that were never changed.

Add one isolated regression test that runs --undo --apply with uname and each cleanup command safely stubbed. Make one applied cleanup command return failure and assert a nonzero exit status. This test must not execute macOS settings changes.

Use a private heartbeat directory or reject symlinked temporary files. FileAccess.WRITE maps to fopen(..., "wb"), so it follows the temporary-path symlink and truncates its target when Linux symlink protection is disabled. With protected_symlinks=1, the same setup fails with a heartbeat write error instead, which can trigger a watchdog restart. Store the heartbeat in a directory private to the kiosk user to avoid both outcomes.

Prevent concurrent watchdogs from sharing the default heartbeat

The standalone watchdog uses ${TMPDIR%/}/hoppy-booth-heartbeat by default. Each instance removes this file before launching, then accepts any fresh timestamp at that path as its own game's heartbeat. If operators run multiple standalone watchdogs without --heartbeat, one healthy game can therefore prevent another watchdog from restarting a hung game.

The documented macOS setup avoids this case by supplying an explicit per-installation path and creating one LaunchAgent. The standalone invocation guidance still permits the shared default, so either derive an instance-specific default or reject concurrent default-path instances.

Addresses CodeRabbit review 5541466824 on #76.

watchdog.sh:
- The signal handler only sets a flag, checked right after the launch
and in every wait, so a signal between `&` and `child=$!` still
  stops the game.
- Without --heartbeat, the heartbeat lives in a new mktemp -d folder
(mode 700) removed at exit: nobody can plant a link in it, and two
watchdogs never read each other's file.
- A game command that sets --heartbeat=<path> is refused; numbers are
read as base 10 ("08"); a stop file that can't be removed at startup
stops the watchdog instead of being logged as removed.

setup.sh:
- --apply records each preference and power setting it changes, once,
in settings-before.tsv. --undo restores exactly those values (absent
keys deleted, others rewritten with their type), instead of pmset
restoredefaults and blanket deletes. Without the record it changes no
setting, lists what to restore by hand and exits 1; any failed
restore exits 1 and keeps the record.
- A relative --app becomes absolute, since launchd doesn't run from
this folder. Extra settings share one table for apply, record, undo.

The game removes a leftover temporary heartbeat before writing, so a
planted link is replaced rather than written through.

Tests: --apply and --undo --apply run against logging stand-ins for
sudo, pmset, defaults, launchctl, xattr and uname (Linux only, so a
missed stand-in can never touch a Mac); the private heartbeat folder;
leading zeros; a refused --heartbeat; atomic fake heartbeats; the
stop file's removal; shlex parsing; a relative --app. The heartbeat
suite uses its own emptied folder, bounds the child launch with a
wall-clock deadline, and checks a planted link is left untouched.

Re review 5541466824: the six inline items are fixed in 6321db6 (replies are in the threads). The follow-ups and nitpicks are fixed in the same commit:

Follow-ups:

  • watchdog.sh: signal between launch and child=$!. Fixed. The handler only sets stop_requested. check_stop runs right after child=$!, after every poll and pause step, and after wait, so a signal that lands before the pid is recorded still stops the game.
  • setup.sh: absolute executable path. Fixed. A relative --app is made absolute before the agent is built. A test runs a relative --app from another folder and checks the agent's executable path.
  • setup.sh: undo without saved settings. Fixed. --apply records each preference and power setting it changes in settings-before.tsv (once; a re-run keeps the first record). --undo restores exactly those values: absent keys are deleted, the rest rewritten with their type, and pmset -a <key> <value> puts the power settings back. There is no pmset restoredefaults and no blanket delete any more. Without the record it changes no setting, lists what to restore by hand, and --undo --apply exits 1.
  • setup.sh: undo failures. Fixed. Deletes run only for keys that exist, so any failure is real: it is counted, the exit status is 1, and the record is kept for another try. The new stand-in tests check a full apply and undo round trip, restoring a value that existed before, the no-record refusal (no defaults or pmset calls at all) and an injected write failure. They replace sudo, pmset, defaults, launchctl, xattr and uname, assert each resolves to its stand-in, and run only off macOS, so CI runs them on Linux and they can never touch a real Mac.
  • booth_heartbeat.gd: symlinked temporary file (CWE-59). Fixed, in the watchdog and in the game. With no --heartbeat, the watchdog keeps the file in a new mktemp -d folder (mode 700) and removes it at exit. The Mac setup already uses ~/Library/Application Support/HoppyBooth/, which belongs to the booth user. The game also removes a leftover temporary file or link before writing. The suite plants a link to a decoy file at the temporary path and checks the decoy is untouched.
  • booth_heartbeat test: bound the child launch. Fixed. launch() uses OS.create_process, polls with a 60 s wall-clock deadline, kills the child if it runs over, and returns OS.get_process_exit_code.
  • watchdog.sh: concurrent watchdogs sharing the default heartbeat. Fixed by the same private per-instance folder. A test checks the folder's mode, its location under $TMPDIR, that a healthy game on it is left alone, and that it is removed when the watchdog stops.

Nitpicks:

  • Assert the stop file was removed. Added: assertFalse(stop_file.exists()) after startup.
  • The fake game's choice among duplicate heartbeats. The fake now takes the first non-empty --heartbeat=, as AppRouter.heartbeat_path() does. Duplicates can no longer reach a game, because the watchdog refuses a command that sets its own --heartbeat, and a test covers that refusal.

Local checks: booth_heartbeat passes (12 checks), and the booth tool tests run 40 with 0 failures under /bin/bash 3.2. The five stand-in tests are skipped on macOS by design and run in CI on Linux.

- Line 217: Remove the `stop_requested=0` reset after the post-wait `check_stop`
call in the watchdog loop. Preserve the flag so a signal received between the
check and subsequent logic is not discarded before the relaunch decision.

Addresses CodeRabbit review 5541562607 on #76: a stray
`stop_requested=0` after the post-wait check (a replace that matched
two places) could discard a signal and relaunch the game. Only the
startup initialization remains.
