Summary

The Endless Runner's three bosses now enter and die like Zelda bosses, rebuilt as rigged 3D models. CodeRabbit is the frame: each boss is a code-quality issue Hoppy is reviewing.

  • Intro: the camera cuts to the boss and pushes in from a low angle, then holds on a frozen pose. A letterboxed title card plays during the hold:

    • a "CODERABBIT REVIEW · CRITICAL ISSUE" chip and a fake path:line,
    • the boss's epithet over a huge name that slams in,
    • a typed threat line,
    • a HOW TO RESOLVE row built from the tools each phase actually accepts.

The intro runs 5 s the first time you meet a boss in a run and 2.5 s on repeats (checkpoint retries count as repeats). Jump or confirm skips it after 0.5 s.

  • Defeat: a hit-stop and white flash, a strobe, staggered explosions at the model's sockets, then the collapse and a burn-away dissolve, then THREAD RESOLVED with the bonus. It runs 3.6 s, or 2.0 s on repeats, and can't be skipped.

  • New Blender bosses: every model has intro, idle, telegraph, attack, hurt, phase-change, defeat and retreat actions. They are used in the fight as well as the cinematics. Each model is 1 material and adds about 1 draw call, against 8–18 for the old procedural bosses.

    • Flaky Test Swarm: a CI queen with six two-faced ✓/✗ test drones.
    • Merge Conflict Hydra: necks that are git branches, <<<<<<< / ======= / >>>>>>> crests, and a --force crown head from phase 2.
    • Legacy Monolith: a deprecated server-rack golem with an @deprecated since 2011 plate and an orange reactor.

How it's built

  • Contract 2.6 (docs/endless-runner-contract.md §11.14):
    • signals boss_cinematic(kind, mode, seconds), boss_cinematic_skipped and boss_cinematic_ended;
    • a mirrored time factor for the hit-stop and slow-mo, so Engine.time_scale is never touched;
    • visuals receive the cinematic progress on every tick, which keeps pause, skip and the 6x smokes in sync;
    • shared INTRO_POSE_AT / INTRO_HOLD_UNTIL constants;
    • per-boss cinematic_focus() for the camera;
    • bosses_met / bosses_defeated_kinds stored in the checkpoint snapshot.
  • Blender boss kit (tools/blender/bosses/):
    • deterministic builds with provenance hashes;
    • a hue-preserving boss shader that reuses Hoppy's lighting (Hoppy renders identically);
    • a rest-space dissolve with a paced burn curve;
    • a runtime loader that falls back to the procedural bosses when a model is missing.
  • Envelope: every boss stays inside the §11.5 envelope (x ±3.5, y 1.6–6.1) in every frame of every action, checked by CPU-skinned sweeps.

Testing

All suites pass headless on Godot 4.7.0 (docs pin 4.7.1; final acceptance on 4.7.1 still pending):

Suite Result
runner_logic 1218 checks
runner_boss_cinematic (new) 300 checks
runner_boss_presentation (new) 84 checks
runner_boss_validator 5114 checks, including the new B7 copy-vs-accepted-tools check
runner_scaffold_check 375 checks
runner_smoke 162 checks
runner_visual_smoke 0 failures, boss checks rewritten for the models
a5_check 89714 checks
runner_warmup_check 170 checks
prewarm_check 313 checks
boss_kit_check 136 headless, 186 GPU
Swarm / Hydra / Monolith model checks 1119 / 271 / 281
stage_flow 0 failures
repo_hygiene --all clean

Already failing before this branch:

  • a1_check has the 8 known Hoppy compress/mode=2 import failures.
  • menu_smoke has 2 mouse-hover failures on 4.7.0. They fail identically on a clean checkout of the base.

Performance: rendered and like-for-like against the pre-change code, every whole-scene draw peak is at or below the old one, and frame time is unchanged at ~8.4–8.5 ms. Boss plus FX peak at 14 draws against the 40 budget.

Review

  • Art: an Opus art reviewer accepted all three bosses and the presentation. Every criterion scored ≥ 4, with zero blockers.
  • Code: whole-branch reviews by Opus xhigh and GPT Terra found 0 blockers. Every Opus finding (2 major, 11 minor, nits) has been fixed or explicitly declined.
  • CodeRabbit CLI: run on the text diff until only these two items were left:
    • Follow-up (minor): the music tape-stop envelope in runner_audio.gd could read INTRO_POSE_AT / INTRO_HOLD_UNTIL instead of its own timing.
    • Declined (trivial): boss textures stay lossless. The 12 × 1024² maps are ~67 MB VRAM with mips; lossless keeps the normal/ORM data for the dissolve and lighting.

Notes

🤖 Generated with Claude Code, coordinating Codex gpt-6-astra (models, kit, presentation), Opus (backend, reviews) and Grok/Luna (tests)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Boss encounters now include cinematic introductions and defeat sequences, with shorter versions for repeat encounters and checkpoint retries.
    • Intro cinematics can be skipped after a brief delay. Cinematics pause player controls and coordinate camera, visual effects, audio, and pacing.
    • Added cinematic title cards, encounter hints, resolution displays, and updated boss models.
    • Hoppy now has an armored look with a cape and cape lighting.
  • Documentation

    • Updated the game contract and reference materials to describe cinematic behavior and Hoppy’s revised appearance.

juanpflores and others added 30 commits October 9, 2026 13:49
The runner Hoppy now matches the Heroes vs. Villains armored hero from the
beat 'em up (gameplay sprites and the hero intro art) instead of the
cream-fur hoodie mascot: orange fur with a cream muzzle, a graphite muscle
suit with armour pauldrons and a chest plate carrying the orange rabbit
emblem, orange finned gauntlets and boots, a utility belt, and a collared
cape lined in orange with a jagged hem.

Action-figure proportions (recipe 10, joint 17): a small rabbit head with
long ears, a tall V-shaped torso and long limbs. Every bone is re-placed;
the cape hangs on two new bones (33 in all) that flare with the run,
billow in the fall and tuck flat in the slide (skinned top 0.549 m).

Badass rather than cute (recipe 11): fierce up-swept eyes with glowing
amber slit pupils, stern brows, a smirk, an angular cyan HUD visor over
the right eye, ear rings and emissive cyan circuit trim. The run is an
athletic sprint with forward lean, hip/shoulder counter-twist, a
stabilised head, a longer stride and a hard arm pump. Gait one-shots
layer their overlays on the run values, so each still ends on its run
exit pose.

The power-up LED strip moves from the old backpack onto the back of the
cape. Emblems, the chest plate and LED pads are chamfered meshes from
marching-squares contours, ray-cast onto the surface along smooth normals.

Tests follow the new design and proportions: no goggle glass, 33 bones,
the boot sole radii, jump-tuck drop limit of 1.3 thigh lengths, eye-bone
depth, roll exit compared with the idle pose, and face-rig travel scaled
by FACE_SCALE for the smaller face. Rear chase views in the A1 capture gate
only the orange class because the cape covers the cream tail; cream stays
gated in front views and the corridor face check. The main-menu runner
stills are recaptured.
Boss build kit (tools/blender/bosses) with a self-test dummy, a boss surface
shader that reuses Hoppy's hue-preserving lighting with a radial dissolve,
flash and phase tint, a runtime glb loader with procedural fallback, and
tests/assets/boss_kit_check.gd. Hoppy's shader path is unchanged.

The kit exporter bakes each vertex's rest position into TEXCOORD_1/2 so the
boss dissolve no longer depends on the animated pose, and the burn curve is
mostly noise with a light radial bias so at least 15% of a boss is still
visible at 90% progress. The loader falls back on assets built before this.

Replace the cubic dissolve threshold with a piecewise curve calibrated on the
three boss models, so about 92/65/30/11% of a boss is still visible at
60/75/90/95% of the defeat and none at the end.

A hostile CI queen with six two-faced test drones that flip between pass and
fail, rigged with intro, idle, telegraph, attack, hurt, phase, defeat and
retreat actions. The visual keeps the flaky and scatter signatures, drives its
cinematic poses from the backend's progress hook, and falls back to the
procedural boss when the model is missing.

A serpent hydra whose necks are git branch lines, with conflict-marker crests
and a --force crown head that sprouts in phase 2 and leans toward the lanes it
targets. Crest glyphs use Blender's bundled DejaVu Sans Mono. The visual keeps
the per-head lane queue, drives cinematic poses from the progress hook, and
falls back to the procedural boss when the model is missing.

A deprecated server-rack golem with CRT eyes, an "@deprecated since 2011"
plate and an orange reactor that cracks open each phase. Its intro freezes in
a raised-fist windup, its defeat topples the rack units and burns orange, and
it falls back to the procedural boss when the model is missing.

Boss entrances and defeats become timed cinematics: a 5 s intro the first time
a boss is met in a run and 2.5 s on repeats (checkpoint retries count as
repeats), and a 3.6 s / 2.0 s defeat. During a cinematic the player's controls
are held, the corridor eases to quarter speed and the camera runs a boss shot.
Intros can be skipped with jump or confirm after 0.5 s; defeats cannot. A
mirrored time factor gives the defeat its hit-stop and slow-mo without
touching Engine.time_scale, and visuals get the cinematic progress every tick.

Every boss now lands its final intro pose at 40% of a full intro (28% of a
short one) and holds it until the camera leaves, so the title card slams on a
frozen boss. Visuals can report a cinematic focus point, defaulting to the
upper third of their rest bounds, and the camera aims there plus a per-shot
bias instead of a fixed height. In a run, play_cinematic is the only intro
cue; play_intro stays for standalone fixtures.

Validator B7 checks that every boss has an epithet, threat line and source
path, that repeat laps are tagged REGRESSED vN, and that each phase's
HOW TO RESOLVE hint names exactly the tools that phase accepts.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The Monolith now enters from the far end at hover height instead of rising
through the floor, keeps its lowest rack level through the slam and defeat,
and pulls its windup inward, so every frame stays within x +-3.5 and
y 1.6-6.1. Its intro lands on the shared hold pose and freezes there.

Raise the drones' lowest flight path and keep the scatter formation inside
x +-3.5 under any ambient sway, so every frame stays within the boss envelope.
The intro now lands on the shared hold pose and freezes there.

From phase 2 the Hydra lowers 0.3 m and shortens 5% as its crown head
sprouts, so every frame stays within y 1.6-6.1 while the three lane heads keep
their x positions. The intro lands on the shared hold pose and freezes, and the
hit-stop freezes the whole model.

The retreat clip and its dissolve now run in 0.95 s, inside the 1 s outro the
encounter allows, so the boss no longer vanishes before it dissolves.

Boss intros now play a letterboxed title card: a CodeRabbit review header, the
boss's epithet over a huge name that slams in on the frozen pose, a typed threat
line and a HOW TO RESOLVE row built from the tools each phase accepts. Defeats
get a white flash, staggered explosions at the model's sockets and a
THREAD RESOLVED callout with the bonus. Adds intro, explosion and resolve audio,
GPU warm-up for the boss models, and rewrites the visual smoke and A5 boss
checks for the Blender-built bosses.

The Flaky Test Swarm's HOW TO RESOLVE chip now leads with WAIT FOR THE
FLICKER TO COMMIT, two-row hint chips appear 0.25 s earlier, and defeat
burst shards reach the boss accent colour after a short white ignition.

…ovenance

Quick builds now check surfaces instead of the four-material cap, exports
publish only after every check passes, output folders resolve from the script
location, and the render sample rate comes from the budget. The Hydra records
its crest font in the GLB provenance, the Monolith's hit-stop holds for 0.12 s
like the other bosses, and the kit GPU check waits a physics frame after each
seek. All four models are rebaked so their provenance matches the scripts;
geometry, rigs, animations and textures are unchanged.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The boss resolved fanfare and explosion cues now finish after a defeat
cinematic ends and are still stopped on a catch, teardown or new run. GPU
warm-up keeps the three boss scenes loaded so a fight no longer re-parses its
model at the intro cut, and the perf probe gates on the engine's real draw
calls. Removes a dead defeat slide-out and an empty intro handler.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A skip with a zero tail now ends the intro right away, retreats no longer send
cinematic updates, and the encounter calls set_health on the visual whenever
boss health changes, which brings the Monolith's damage cracks to life. The
cinematic test now proves pause freezes the overlay, checks the slow-mo curve
against an independent formula, drives the skip through real input and covers
zero-length, restart and mid-intro-kill paths. The copy check fails instead of
skipping when the copy table is missing.

Short intros can be skipped after 0.5 s, so they now show the skip prompt
too; defeats still don't. The defeat fanfare test records stop requests
instead of racing the real audio mixer.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The cinematic overlay now asks RunnerGame.can_skip_boss_cinematic(), listed in
contract 11.4, instead of a private helper, and the warm-up check reports a
missing boss scene instead of crashing on it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Co-Authored-By: Codex gpt-6-astra <noreply@openai.com>
BossModel caches its rest-position validation on each mesh surface and drops
it when the mesh changes, so repeat boss mounts no longer rescan about 20k
vertices at the intro cut (warm mounts go from about 2.9 ms to 1.1-1.4 ms).
The runner doc now ties the skip prompt to can_skip_boss_cinematic().

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 195c8

The boss build reports were not regenerated after the builder sources changed, so the Legacy Monolith asset check fails as committed. Rebuild the assets and regenerate their reports before merging. Separately, one asset check samples a commit pose that never occurs in play, so it can miss real out-of-bounds poses.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 195c8

The inspected changes do not establish a new remote or privileged attack path. Cinematic state has explicit ownership and cleanup, while asset generation uses local command-line inputs. Risk remains low rather than minimal because imported binary assets and external build invocation are incompletely assessed.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The assessed authority is local: cinematic transitions affect the current run, while asset generation writes to an operator-selected location using the invoking process's filesystem permissions. Inspected callers establish no remote source-to-sensitive-sink chain; external invocation policy remains unknown.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Recipe selection is allowlisted, BossBuilder rejects unknown kinds, and concrete recipes supply fixed build callbacks. Output directories are not sandboxed. These controls constrain local recipe selection but do not authenticate callers or make untrusted external build arguments safe.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The exporter checks required animations, sockets, skinning and resource budgets, then records source and output hashes. The inspected Monolith validation checks report hashes against files. These are consistency checks, not signed provenance or runtime authentication; their execution was not verified in this pass.

Regenerate the affected boss assets and reports.

tests/assets/boss_legacy_monolith_check.gd:94-99 compares each recorded source hash with the committed file hash. The legacy report has mismatches for boss_kit.py and build_legacy_monolith.py, so this check fails. Rebuild the affected assets and regenerate the reports. Do not update the hashes only.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Use the committed lane mask attack.mask in play_commit, not attack.telegraph_mask.

The GLB pose check calls play_commit with attack.telegraph_mask. The rest of this file uses attack.mask for commits: check_signature_reactions at Line 580 passes int(attack.mask), and check_signature_fx at Line 707 passes flaky.mask. For flaky attacks, telegraph_mask contains every candidate lane, while mask contains only the committed lane. As a result, the "commit+.15s" envelope check samples a multi-lane commit pose that production never produces. It also skips the single-lane commit pose that the Swarm converges on. In that case, an X or depth envelope breach on the real commit pose can go undetected.

6 checks passed

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Brings in #64 and #69-#72. Conflicts resolved without dropping either side:
- audio_service.gd keeps main's _exit_tree() mixer wait and _stop_players()
from #70/#71, and adds settle() alongside them.
- ci.yml keeps the runner step and adds main's Exit leaks step after it.
The runner discovers main's new suites, so the hand list goes.
- CONTRIBUTING keeps main's exit_leak.py note in the Tests section.

…e baked from

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Running every suite showed assets/boss_legacy_monolith_check failing on
main: "provenance hash matches source" for build_legacy_monolith.py and
boss_kit.py. main's CI never ran the asset checks, so nobody saw it.

Each boss bake records the SHA-256 of its recipe sources in its
.build.json and in the GLB's asset extras. The four bosses were baked at
4ab289d in #64's branch. #68, a lint autofix merged into that branch
afterwards, then removed unused imports from boss_kit.py,
build_legacy_monolith.py and build_merge_conflict_hydra.py. That edit was
import-only, so it doesn't change any output, but the recorded hashes no
longer matched the sources. All four reports were stale. Only the
monolith check compares them.

This restores those three files byte for byte to 4ab289d. All four
reports now match their sources and GLBs again, and no asset changes.
ruff.toml exempts only those three files from F401, with the reason, so
the next lint fix doesn't drift them again. A rebake can drop the
imports and the exemption together.

…deterministically (#40)

* test: run every suite in CI, fail on engine errors, and settle audio deterministically

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

CI ran a hand-maintained list of 24 suites and failed only on a nonzero
exit or "SCRIPT ERROR". New tests silently never ran, and the 11 runner
asset checks were never in CI at all. Meanwhile one of them, a1_check, had
been failing since an editor session let Godot's detect-3D import flip the
Hoppy runner textures from lossless to VRAM compression.

- tools/tests/run_tests.py discovers every tests/**/*.gd, runs them in
parallel with a per-suite HOME (so user:// never touches real files), and
fails on a nonzero exit, a timeout, engine or script errors, or exit-time
leaks. tools/tests/suites.toml holds the six skipped GPU, window and
  hover suites with reasons, plus runner_logic's one intentional error;
  stale entries fail the run.
- AudioService.settle() stops the shared music and waits until the audio
thread has released each playback. The fixed 0.3 s waits raced the mixer
under parallel load and leaked at exit; every suite now settles before
  quitting.
- The Hoppy texture imports are lossless again with detect-3D disabled,
which matches a1_check and keeps the editor from flipping them back.
- CI caches .godot imports, runs four suites at a time, uploads the results
summary, and unit-tests the runner in the lint job.

* fix(tests): isolate user:// on every platform and run timing suites alone

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

- CI on Linux failed assets/prewarm_check: its 1000 ms cold-warm budget
can't hold while three other suites share the runner's CPU. A new
[serial] table in suites.toml runs timing suites alone after the
  parallel batch.
- assets/starship_check quit without settling the shared audio and
leaked at exit; it now awaits AudioService.settle() like the others.
- CodeRabbit (#40): Windows keeps user:// under %APPDATA%, which HOME
doesn't redirect. The per-suite environment now also sets APPDATA,
LOCALAPPDATA and USERPROFILE. Before running, the runner asks Godot
where user:// resolves and refuses to start if it escapes the private
  directory.

* fix(tests): verify isolation before any Godot run and name leaked objects

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

- CodeRabbit (#40): the isolation probe now runs before the resource
import, and the import itself uses the isolated environment, so no Godot
process touches the caller's editor data or user:// first.
- When a suite fails only on an exit-time leak, the runner reruns it once
with --verbose and appends the Leaked instance / Resource still in use
lines to the failure. The suite still fails; the rerun is diagnosis
only. assets/starship_check leaks on Linux CI but not locally, and this
  will say what is leaking.

* fix(tests): fail the import on engine errors and let CI use the runner's import

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Addresses CodeRabbit review on #40: a zero-exit import that reports an
engine or script error now stops the run, using the same detection as
the suites. CI drops its separate import step so that check applies
there too.

* fix(tests): classify exit leaks from verbose output and tolerate only the audio-teardown race

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Linux CI still reported the shared music and UI voices as leaked in the
3D suites (a2_check, starship_check, runner_smoke) even after
AudioService.settle(): the engine releases audio playbacks on its audio
thread, which a loaded runner starves. A diagnostic rerun can't classify
a transient leak, so every suite now runs with --verbose and its own log
names what leaked. A leak made only of AudioStream* instances and audio
files is recorded as a note. Any other leaked instance or resource fails
the suite with its class names. Verbose loader noise is dropped from the
displayed log.

* fix(tests): count Ogg internals as audio teardown and settle the booth suite

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

- Linux CI reported heroes_villains_logic's music as leaked through Ogg
  Vorbis's internal OggPacketSequence and OggPacketSequencePlayback
objects, the same audio-thread race as the MP3 playbacks. They now
count as audio for the tolerated shape; any other leaked class still
fails. A unit test covers it.
- tests/booth_mode.gd (merged in #43) now ends with
  AudioService.settle() like every other suite.
- Merged main (#43, #67); the vendor-lock check in lint and the
  pre-commit hook are kept.

* chore(tests): run A6 and A8 again now that #66 fixed them

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

#66 merged first, so drop the two [skip] entries that pointed at #65.

* fix(tests): run a2_check alone and classify main's new scripts

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

godot-tests failed on assets/a2_check ("asynchronous prewarm completed
before texture census") in three of the last four CI runs. a2_check waits
at most 15 s of wall time for the runner's asynchronous prewarm, which runs
on Godot's single low-priority worker. The CI runner has 2 cores
("WorkerThreadPool: 2 threads, 1 max low-priority") and the batch runs 4
suites at once, so the prewarm starves. It passed when the batch was
lighter. The check itself is unchanged; it now runs in the serial phase
with prewarm_check, the way main's one-at-a-time loop ran it.

The merge brought in scripts that main's hand list never ran:
- runner_synth_threads parks a thread on every core and releases them
together. It needs idle cores and starves its neighbours: serial.
- capture_code_city_bosses writes docs/previews/ stills in a graphical
  run: skipped, like capture_runner_menu_previews.
- exit_leak needs a --scenario per process and is driven by
tools/checks/exit_leak.py, which CI runs as its own step: skipped.

* fix(tests): keep non-audio exit leaks failing and record setup failures

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Addresses the open CodeRabbit comments on #40:
- A suite whose log had the audio-teardown race plus another exit leak,
such as "RID allocations ... were leaked at exit", passed: run_suite()
dropped every leak line once the verbose details were all audio. Only
the two engine summary lines that those details explain are dropped
now, and any other leak report fails the suite. run_suite() is tested
with a mixed audio and RID log.
- An isolation or import failure returned before summary.json was
written, so CI uploaded no results. Both now write the summary with a
  setup_error, covered by two tests.
- README says how suites are discovered (scripts that extend SceneTree
or MainLoop), not that every script under tests/ is one.
- Docstrings on the runner's remaining functions.

* fix(runner): restore the boss recipe sources the committed models were baked from

* fix(tests): record a probe or import that can't start or times out

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Addresses CodeRabbit's full review of #40:
- check_isolation() returns a reason when the probe can't launch (a
wrong --godot path) or times out, instead of raising. main() then
refuses to run and writes the summary with setup_error.
- The resource import handles the same two cases: it writes the summary
and returns 1 without a traceback.
- Tests cover both probe cases and the import timeout.
- CONTRIBUTING names MainLoop beside SceneTree in the discovery rule.
