Why

CI has three blind spots, and they've already let a regression through:

  1. Suites are registered by hand. ci.yml lists 24 suites. A new test that nobody adds never runs, and the 11 runner asset checks under tests/assets/ were never in CI at all.
  2. Only nonzero exits and SCRIPT ERROR fail a run. push_error, engine ERROR: lines and exit-time leaks all pass.
  3. The regression that slipped through: assets/a1_check has been failing since 9773d77. That editor session let Godot's detect 3D import flip the eight Hoppy runner textures from lossless to VRAM compression, but A1 requires lossless (e94f500, docs/assets/a1.md). Nothing ran A1, so nobody saw it.

What

tools/tests/run_tests.py (standard library):

  • Discovers every hoppys-adventure-arcade/tests/**/*.gd and runs it headless, 4 at a time by default.
  • Gives each suite its own HOME, so user:// settings and leaderboards never touch a developer's real files or another suite.
  • Fails a suite on any of: a nonzero exit, a timeout, ERROR:, SCRIPT ERROR, a parse error, a failed script load, "leaked at exit" or "still in use at exit".
  • Writes build/test-results/summary.json. Supports -k filters and --list.

tools/tests/suites.toml is the only way to keep a suite out of CI:

  • 6 skips, each with a reason: 4 GPU or window probes and the 2 hover-driven menu smokes.
  • runner_logic's intentional corrupt-leaderboard ConfigFile error.
  • An entry that no longer matches anything fails the run, so the list can't go stale.

AudioService.settle(): stops the shared music and SFX, then waits until the audio thread has dropped each playback (by reference count, with a 2 s cap). The suites' fixed 0.3–0.4 s waits raced the mixer. Under parallel load, runner_logic, heroes_villains_motion and assets/a3_check leaked at exit about half the time. All 25 suites that shut audio down now await …settle().

Hoppy texture imports (8 files): compress/mode=0 and detect_3d/compress_to=0, so they're lossless again and the editor won't silently flip them back.

CI:

  • Caches .godot imports, keyed on project.godot and every .import file.
  • Runs the suites with --jobs 4 and uploads the results summary.
  • The lint job now unit-tests the runner (tools/tests/test_run_tests.py, 9 tests).

Docs: CONTRIBUTING and README describe the runner, the skip list and the settle() convention.

Verification (Godot 4.7.1, macOS)

Run Result
run_tests.py -j 4 35 passed, 0 failed, 6 skipped, 133 s, including all 11 asset checks
run_tests.py -j 6 --no-import 35 passed, 0 failed, 109 s
runner_logic, 6 copies at once 0 leak lines (it leaked 2 of 3 times with the fixed delay)
python -m unittest discover -s tools/tests 9 passed
actionlint on ci.yml clean
ruff --select F,E,W,B,UP on tools/tests clean

The baseline before this change: of 41 scripts, 35 passed, a1_check failed, and the five other failures were the documented GPU and hover suites.

Notes

This touches the same 8 .import files as #39, which records ETC2 formats for them. Whichever merges second takes this lossless version and reimports. Once the textures aren't VRAM-compressed, they have no ETC2 entries.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Quality Improvements
    • Automated checks discover and run game test suites, using parallel execution where appropriate, and make test results available for review.
    • Test suites wait for audio playback to settle before exiting.
    • Added checks for test-runner reliability and failure detection, and expanded automated validation to include tooling tests.
  • Documentation
    • Updated test guidance with instructions for running all suites or selected suites, and details on skipped tests and failure conditions.
  • Asset Compatibility
    • Updated character texture import settings to use a single texture format.

…deterministically

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

CI ran a hand-maintained list of 24 suites and failed only on a nonzero
exit or "SCRIPT ERROR". New tests silently never ran, and the 11 runner
asset checks were never in CI at all. Meanwhile one of them, a1_check, had
been failing since an editor session let Godot's detect-3D import flip the
Hoppy runner textures from lossless to VRAM compression.

- tools/tests/run_tests.py discovers every tests/**/*.gd, runs them in
parallel with a per-suite HOME (so user:// never touches real files), and
fails on a nonzero exit, a timeout, engine or script errors, or exit-time
leaks. tools/tests/suites.toml holds the six skipped GPU, window and
  hover suites with reasons, plus runner_logic's one intentional error;
  stale entries fail the run.
- AudioService.settle() stops the shared music and waits until the audio
thread has released each playback. The fixed 0.3 s waits raced the mixer
under parallel load and leaked at exit; every suite now settles before
  quitting.
- The Hoppy texture imports are lossless again with detect-3D disabled,
which matches a1_check and keeps the editor from flipping them back.
- CI caches .godot imports, runs four suites at a time, uploads the results
summary, and unit-tests the runner in the lint job.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds a Python runner that discovers and executes Godot test suites, checks suite output, and writes JSON results. CI runs discovered suites and tests the runner. Test teardown waits for audio playback references to settle. Eight Hoppy texture imports use compression mode 0.

Changes: Godot test execution and teardown

Layer / File(s) Summary
Suite discovery and configuration
tools/tests/run_tests.py, tools/tests/suites.toml
The runner discovers SceneTree and MainLoop suites, loads skip, serial, and expected-error settings, and checks user-data isolation. The configuration lists skipped and serial suites and an expected error.
Suite execution and failure reporting
tools/tests/run_tests.py, tools/tests/test_run_tests.py
The runner imports resources, executes suites, detects failures, classifies audio-only exit leaks, and writes suite outcomes to JSON. Unit tests cover failure detection, leak handling, setup errors, configuration, and discovery.
CI integration and test instructions
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .gitignore, README.md, CONTRIBUTING.md
CI caches imported resources, runs the runner with four workers, uploads results, and runs runner unit tests. The README and contributor instructions describe runner commands and configuration.
Audio settling in suite teardown
hoppys-adventure-arcade/app/audio_service.gd, hoppys-adventure-arcade/tests/*.gd
AudioService.settle() calls shutdown() and waits for captured playback references to be released or for its timeout. Test scripts await it during teardown.

Hoppy texture imports

Layer / File(s) Summary
Hoppy texture import settings
hoppys-adventure-arcade/Assets/runner/hoppy/*.png.import
Eight texture imports use single .ctex outputs, disable VRAM texture storage, and set compression mode to 0.

Blender recipe imports and lint settings

Layer / File(s) Summary
Boss recipe imports and lint exceptions
hoppys-adventure-arcade/tools/blender/bosses/*.py, ruff.toml
Three boss recipe scripts add or adjust imports. Ruff adds per-file F401 ignores for those scripts.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 0fdd3

CI now routes resource imports through the test runner, which rejects detected engine, script, or parse errors even when Godot exits successfully. No outstanding issue from this review prevents merging, subject to normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0fdd3

The new runner improves user-data separation and failure detection without establishing new execution privileges. Remaining risk is limited mainly to cleanup of suite-created child processes after a timeout; normal child execution and the CI job timeout constrain that exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The runner bounds the direct Godot process but does not explicitly own descendant termination. The discovered booth suite launches another Godot process, so a stalled descendant can outlive its timed-out suite and delay cleanup or continue consuming local resources. The child's normal --quit-after limit and CI's 30-minute job timeout constrain this failure-containment risk; no privilege escalation or cross-tenant exposure was established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Effective execution exposure remains the CI runner or the invoking developer account. Discovery includes more repository-controlled scripts, but modifying an already-listed suite provided equivalent process authority before this PR. User-data redirection reduces accidental settings and leaderboard interference rather than containing malicious tests.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The workflow uses pull_request rather than pull_request_target, grants contents: read, and disables persisted checkout credentials. Godot subprocesses receive argument lists rather than shell command strings. These controls limit credential persistence and shell interpretation without making suite code untrusted-safe.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failure-policy exceptions are bounded: expected-error patterns must still occur, and audio-leak tolerance requires classified audio-only details. Mixed non-audio or unclassified leak reports remain failures. These controls reduce silent drift in the new result-classification boundary.

- CI on Linux failed assets/prewarm_check: its 1000 ms cold-warm budget
can't hold while three other suites share the runner's CPU. A new
[serial] table in suites.toml runs timing suites alone after the
  parallel batch.
- assets/starship_check quit without settling the shared audio and
leaked at exit; it now awaits AudioService.settle() like the others.
- CodeRabbit (#40): Windows keeps user:// under %APPDATA%, which HOME
doesn't redirect. The per-suite environment now also sets APPDATA,
LOCALAPPDATA and USERPROFILE. Before running, the runner asks Godot
where user:// resolves and refuses to start if it escapes the private
  directory.

Check import output for engine errors.

The import gate checks only imported.returncode. Apply the existing PROBLEM detection to the combined import output so a zero-exit import that reports an engine or script error cannot pass.

- CodeRabbit (#40): the isolation probe now runs before the resource
import, and the import itself uses the isolated environment, so no Godot
process touches the caller's editor data or user:// first.
- When a suite fails only on an exit-time leak, the runner reruns it once
with --verbose and appends the Leaked instance / Resource still in use
lines to the failure. The suite still fails; the rerun is diagnosis
only. assets/starship_check leaks on Linux CI but not locally, and this
  will say what is leaking.

Addresses CodeRabbit review on #40: a zero-exit import that reports an
engine or script error now stops the run, using the same detection as
the suites. CI drops its separate import step so that check applies
there too.

Re the outside-diff note, "Check import output for engine errors" (tools/tests/run_tests.py): agreed. Fixed in 2fc10f8 along the lines of your suggestion. The import output goes through find_problems(), and a zero-exit import that reports an engine or script error fails the run and lists the problems. CI drops its separate Import project step and lets the runner import, so the strict check covers CI as well. Locally the import is clean and code_city_logic passes. @coderabbitai please verify.

@esthor Verified by source inspection at ed1bfd6. The import-error concern is addressed.

  • tools/tests/run_tests.py, Line 211–216, combines stdout and stderr, removes ANSI escapes, and calls find_problems() with no expected-error exceptions. A nonzero exit or detected error prints the import problems and returns 1.
  • .github/workflows/ci.yml, Line 57–58, runs the runner without --no-import. The separate import step is gone, so CI uses the strict import check.
  • tools/tests/test_run_tests.py, Line 12–14, covers engine, script, and parse errors with a zero exit code.

I did not run Godot or the unit tests in the inspection sandbox.

… the audio-teardown race

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Linux CI still reported the shared music and UI voices as leaked in the
3D suites (a2_check, starship_check, runner_smoke) even after
AudioService.settle(): the engine releases audio playbacks on its audio
thread, which a loaded runner starves. A diagnostic rerun can't classify
a transient leak, so every suite now runs with --verbose and its own log
names what leaked. A leak made only of AudioStream* instances and audio
files is recorded as a note. Any other leaked instance or resource fails
the suite with its class names. Verbose loader noise is dropped from the
displayed log.

- Keep the runner-based CI step over main's extended hand list; the runner
  discovers main's new suites (stage_flow, beatemup_*, hoppy_armed_assets).
- Discover only scripts that extend SceneTree or MainLoop. Main added
tests/support/armed_measure.gd (extends RefCounted), and running it as a
suite makes Godot raise a modal alert on macOS.
- Move the new suites' teardown to AudioService.settle(); keep main's
explicit stop of the Heroes vs. Villains voices before settling.
- Keep the Hoppy texture imports lossless (a1_check) and reimport.
- assets/a6_check and assets/a8_check fail on main since #61. Bisected and
tracked in #65; skipped with that reason until it's fixed.

@esthor Thanks for the context. Source inspection at 8fa8aff confirms the reported changes:

  • discover() selects scripts with extends SceneTree or extends MainLoop. It excludes the RefCounted helper tests/support/armed_measure.gd.
  • The discovery unit test checks that support/armed_measure is excluded.
  • All four new suites await AudioService.settle() before their normal exit.
  • suites.toml contains eight skips. The two asset-check skips reference #65, which documents the bisect and requires removing those skips when the checks are fixed.

I did not run Godot or the unit tests. Your local result remains author-reported.

I’ll trigger a review of the updated PR.

Learning: In coderabbitai/coderabbit-arcade, Godot test-suite discovery in tools/tests/run_tests.py selects scripts under hoppys-adventure-arcade/tests/ that extend SceneTree or MainLoop. Other scripts are helpers. In particular, tests/support/armed_measure.gd extends RefCounted and must not run as a suite; running it with Godot --script can raise a modal alert on macOS.

Learning: In coderabbitai/coderabbit-arcade PR #40, the skips for assets/a6_check and assets/a8_check in tools/tests/suites.toml track pre-existing main-branch failures introduced by PR #61, not regressions caused by PR #40. Issue #65 documents the bisect: both checks pass at 1fede76 and fail at f586a70. The follow-up fix must remove both skip entries.

…h suite

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

- Linux CI reported heroes_villains_logic's music as leaked through Ogg
  Vorbis's internal OggPacketSequence and OggPacketSequencePlayback
objects, the same audio-thread race as the MP3 playbacks. They now
count as audio for the tolerated shape; any other leaked class still
fails. A unit test covers it.
- tests/booth_mode.gd (merged in #43) now ends with
  AudioService.settle() like every other suite.
- Merged main (#43, #67); the vendor-lock check in lint and the
  pre-commit hook are kept.
[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

#66 merged first, so drop the two [skip] entries that pointed at #65.
[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Brings in #64 and #69-#72. Conflicts resolved without dropping either side:
- audio_service.gd keeps main's _exit_tree() mixer wait and _stop_players()
from #70/#71, and adds settle() alongside them.
- ci.yml keeps the runner step and adds main's Exit leaks step after it.
The runner discovers main's new suites, so the hand list goes.
- CONTRIBUTING keeps main's exit_leak.py note in the Tests section.
[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

godot-tests failed on assets/a2_check ("asynchronous prewarm completed
before texture census") in three of the last four CI runs. a2_check waits
at most 15 s of wall time for the runner's asynchronous prewarm, which runs
on Godot's single low-priority worker. The CI runner has 2 cores
("WorkerThreadPool: 2 threads, 1 max low-priority") and the batch runs 4
suites at once, so the prewarm starves. It passed when the batch was
lighter. The check itself is unchanged; it now runs in the serial phase
with prewarm_check, the way main's one-at-a-time loop ran it.

The merge brought in scripts that main's hand list never ran:
- runner_synth_threads parks a thread on every core and releases them
together. It needs idle cores and starves its neighbours: serial.
- capture_code_city_bosses writes docs/previews/ stills in a graphical
  run: skipped, like capture_runner_menu_previews.
- exit_leak needs a --scenario per process and is driven by
tools/checks/exit_leak.py, which CI runs as its own step: skipped.
[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Addresses the open CodeRabbit comments on #40:
- A suite whose log had the audio-teardown race plus another exit leak,
such as "RID allocations ... were leaked at exit", passed: run_suite()
dropped every leak line once the verbose details were all audio. Only
the two engine summary lines that those details explain are dropped
now, and any other leak report fails the suite. run_suite() is tested
with a mixed audio and RID log.
- An isolation or import failure returned before summary.json was
written, so CI uploaded no results. Both now write the summary with a
  setup_error, covered by two tests.
- README says how suites are discovered (scripts that extend SceneTree
or MainLoop), not that every script under tests/ is one.
- Docstrings on the runner's remaining functions.

Updated from main at 5fc256d (#64, #69–#72) in 89212ba, then fixed the CI failure and the three open review comments.

  • Merge: audio_service.gd keeps main's _exit_tree() mixer wait and _stop_players() and adds settle() beside them. ci.yml keeps the runner step and main's Exit leaks step.
  • godot-tests root cause: assets/a2_check waits at most 15 s of wall time for the runner's asynchronous prewarm. That prewarm runs on Godot's single low-priority worker. The CI runner has 2 cores, and the batch runs 4 suites at once, so the prewarm starved (three of the last four runs). The check is unchanged. It now runs in the [serial] phase, as prewarm_check does (cfeebf2).
  • New scripts from main: runner_synth_threads runs serially because it parks a thread on every core. capture_code_city_bosses (writes docs/previews/) and exit_leak (driven per scenario by tools/checks/exit_leak.py) are skipped with reasons.
  • Review fixes (dbde5de): a non-audio exit leak, such as an RID leak beside the audio race, now fails. Setup failures write summary.json. The README describes discovery.

Reviews were auto-paused after the earlier commits, so please review the whole PR again against current main.

…e baked from

[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Running every suite showed assets/boss_legacy_monolith_check failing on
main: "provenance hash matches source" for build_legacy_monolith.py and
boss_kit.py. main's CI never ran the asset checks, so nobody saw it.

Each boss bake records the SHA-256 of its recipe sources in its
.build.json and in the GLB's asset extras. The four bosses were baked at
4ab289d in #64's branch. #68, a lint autofix merged into that branch
afterwards, then removed unused imports from boss_kit.py,
build_legacy_monolith.py and build_merge_conflict_hydra.py. That edit was
import-only, so it doesn't change any output, but the recorded hashes no
longer matched the sources. All four reports were stale. Only the
monolith check compares them.

This restores those three files byte for byte to 4ab289d. All four
reports now match their sources and GLBs again, and no asset changes.
ruff.toml exempts only those three files from F401, with the reason, so
the next lint fix doesn't drift them again. A rebake can drop the
imports and the exemption together.
[Agent: Claude Code | Model: Opus 5.5 | Thinking: High | Acting on behalf of: Erik | Skill: none]

Addresses CodeRabbit's full review of #40:
- check_isolation() returns a reason when the probe can't launch (a
wrong --godot path) or times out, instead of raising. main() then
refuses to run and writes the summary with setup_error.
- The resource import handles the same two cases: it writes the summary
and returns 1 without a traceback.
- Tests cover both probe cases and the import timeout.
- CONTRIBUTING names MainLoop beside SceneTree in the discovery rule.

Re review 5538613626: all three inline items are fixed in 0fdd3e0 (replies are in each thread). That review had no outside-diff or nitpick items.

CI at dbde5de: assets/a2_check passed in the serial phase. Every suite passed except assets/boss_legacy_monolith_check, a real failure on main that this PR's discovery surfaced:

  • Symptom: "provenance hash matches source" fails for tools/blender/bosses/build_legacy_monolith.py and boss_kit.py.
  • Cause: the four bosses were baked at 4ab289d on feat(runner): Zelda-style boss intros and defeats with Blender-built bosses #64's branch. Each .build.json and GLB records the SHA-256 of its recipe sources. fix(blender): resolve unused imports in boss generation tools #68, a lint autofix merged into that branch afterwards, removed unused imports from boss_kit.py, build_legacy_monolith.py and build_merge_conflict_hydra.py. The output is unchanged, but the hashes went stale for all four bosses. main's hand list never ran the asset checks.
  • Fix (62b4b31): restore those three files byte for byte to 4ab289d. All four reports match their sources and GLBs again, with no asset changes. ruff.toml exempts only those three files from F401, with the reason, so the next lint fix doesn't drift them again. A rebake can drop both.

CI at 0fdd3e0 is green: godot-tests reports 54 passed, 0 failed, 8 skipped (424 s), including assets/boss_legacy_monolith_check and assets/a2_check. No suite needed the audio-teardown tolerance, and all 11 Exit leaks scenarios pass. lint and gitleaks pass.

Re the retained low-severity concern in the security architecture review (the runner doesn't own descendant termination): no change, based on the following.

  • Only booth_mode spawns a child. It calls OS.execute(..., output, true) with --headless --fixed-fps 60 --quit-after 120, so the child ends on its own after 120 frames. It writes to a pipe that booth_mode owns, not to the runner's pipes. A timed-out booth_mode therefore can't keep subprocess.run waiting, and its child can't outlive it by more than those 120 frames.
  • Killing whole process groups would need start_new_session=True on POSIX. Then Ctrl+C in a developer's terminal would no longer reach the suites, so the runner would need its own interrupt handling on every platform. That's more machinery than this bounded case warrants. The 600 s suite timeout and CI's 30-minute job timeout remain the backstops.
