Add Seeed Studio reComputer Industrial RK3576 support - #603
Add Seeed Studio reComputer Industrial RK3576 support
Adds device tree support for the Seeed Studio reComputer Industrial RK3576,
a carrier board built around the RK3576 SoM (4GB/8GB LPDDR5, 16GB/32GB eMMC).
Board highlights covered by this series:
2.5GbE with Maxio MAE0621A PHY (RGMII with calibrated tx/rx delays)
Dual CAN-FD with shared 120R termination enable GPIO
PCF8563 countdown-timer hardware watchdog on the carrier
M.2 B-key slot for the Wio WM6108 HaLow module (optional overlay)
Commits
arm64: dts: rockchip: add reComputer Industrial RK3576 — new board DTS
(SoM + carrier description, self-contained SoM override section for SDIO
timing, HDMI DDC fix and eMMC SKU selection).
rtc: pcf8563: expose countdown timer as a watchdog — the PCF8563
countdown timer is wired to the SoC reset line on this board; register a
watchdog device so systemd RuntimeWatchdogSec can feed it. TI/TP pulse
output mode is used to keep the timeout programmable at runtime.
can: rockchip: restore the rk3576 CAN-FD driver — the RK3576 CAN-FD
block was dropped from the vendor tree; restore rk3576_canfd.c plus its
Kconfig/Makefile wiring (DT-gated, no effect on other boards).
arm64: dts: rockchip: add reComputer Industrial Wio-WM6108 HaLow WiFi
overlay — optional overlay for the M.2 B-key slot (Morse MM6108 over
SPI3 CS0, RESET line hogged high because the board has no pull-up and the
Morse SPI driver does not reset the module).
Build integration lives in the companion PR against armbian/build.
Industrial carrier on the reComputer RK3576 SoM: dual GbE (GMAC1 Maxio
MAE0621A), CAN1 (TPT71044), CH344 2x RS485 + RS232, M.2 NVMe, mini-PCIe
(4G / LoRa SX1261), HDMI + ES8311, isolated DI/DO
buzzer, boot-mode DIP on SARADC0. eMMC only; no SD slot, no SPI NOR.
Console is the fiq-debugger (ttyFIQ0) on UART0_M0 like the devkit and
module-devkit boards; &uart0 stays disabled to avoid the probe conflict.
SoM-level overrides vs the shared rk3576-recomputer-som.dtsi, kept
carrier-local until the module variants are sorted out upstream:
- WiFi/BT combo is FCS960KAAMD (WQ9201S silicon), not WL6201S; SDIO at
100 MHz; xin32k clock from the on-module PCF85063A; BT runs over
UART, so sai2 (BT PCM) is disabled
- HDMI DDC sda-falling-delay 360 ns fixes intermittent EDID failures
The changes add device-tree support for the reComputer RK3576 Industrial board and its HaLow Wi-Fi overlay. They add an RK3576 CAN-FD driver with frame handling, optional RX DMA, interrupts, and power management. The PCF8563 RTC driver gains optional countdown-timer watchdog support, with device-tree properties for enabling it and setting its timeout.
armbian/linux-rockchip#589: The changes add the RK3576 CAN-FD driver and its Kconfig and Makefile wiring, matching the issue’s objective of restoring the driver. The changes do not address the issue’s questions about branch policy.
Merge Risk: Moderate · up to d9204
The board support still has CAN transmission and receive recovery defects, and existing watchdog error paths can leave reset protection inconsistent. Resolve these material issues before merging. Successful timeout-change reporting is corrected, but initial timeout reporting and default CAN driver enablement still need fixes.

Cross-reference: this kernel support is a prerequisite for armbian/build#11136 ("Add Seeed Studio reComputer Industrial RK3576 board").
The board config there sets BOOT_FDT_FILE="rockchip/rk3576-recomputer-industrial.dtb" — the DTB is only produced by the DTS added here.
The board's CAN1 and the external PCF8563T watchdog (systemd RuntimeWatchdogSec=30 in the board config, kept in sync with the DTS timeout-sec) rely on the driver changes in this PR.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
CAN1's compatible now selects only rockchip,rk3576-canfd; the supplied match table confirms the driver identity but not that the board's shipped kernel selects the new driver. If it does not, the previous compatible's driver cannot bind CAN1.
The carrier's CAN interface is absent.
This can occur when: A production kernel configuration omits the new RK3576 CAN-FD driver.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Deleting /chosen removes the inherited kernel command line and relies on the bootscript to supply its replacement. A supported boot path that does not populate /chosen/bootargs could therefore lose its console or root-filesystem arguments.
Kernel output is unavailable or the system cannot mount its root filesystem.
This can occur when: The board is booted through a firmware, extlinux, or recovery path that bypasses the described bootscript.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The accepted rockchip,rx-max-data = <4> configuration selects an eight-byte RX storage format, but the driver continues to advertise and enable CAN-FD.
The driver can read beyond that frame's stored payload or deliver truncated or incorrect CAN-FD data.
This can occur when: A board selects four-word RX entries and receives a CAN-FD frame containing more than eight payload bytes.

preserve the existing return behavior.
- Around line 953-955: In the BUSOFF_RCY_INT recovery path, set rcan->can.state

returning, while preserving the write error.
- Around line 467-470: Update pcf8563_wdt_set_timeout so a failed
pcf8563_wdt_program does not leave wdd->timeout set to the rejected value;
restore the prior timeout or otherwise keep the recorded timeout consistent with
the hardware’s programmed state, so later keepalives cannot program the rejected
timeout.
- Line 31: Update the PCF8563_BIT_TI_TP definition to use bit 4 instead of bit 7
so pcf8563_wdt_program() forces pulse mode and pcf8563_wdt_ping() preserves the
correct bit.
- Around line 746-747: Update pcf8563_probe() so watchdog mode disables RTC
alarm functionality: after devm_rtc_register_device() sets the features, clear
RTC_FEATURE_ALARM when nxp,timer-watchdog is enabled, or reject alarm operations
in that mode through .set_alarm and .alarm_irq_enable. Ensure users cannot
enable alarms when the client IRQ is zero in watchdog mode.

Gate nxp,timer-watchdog to the compatibles that register a watchdog.
The binding applies nxp,timer-watchdog and timeout-sec to every compatible in its enum. nxp,pcf85263 and nxp,pcf85363 are bound to rtc-pcf85363.c, which never reads the property or registers a watchdog. A DT for these chips validates and then gets no /dev/watchdog, with no error.

Guard the error-frame pointer when alloc_can_err_skb() fails.
When allocation fails, alloc_can_err_skb() returns NULL and does not set cf. The BUS_OFF and PASSIVE branches, the cf statistics fields, and netif_rx(skb) still run without a check. Check skb before each use of cf and before netif_rx(skb), and keep the state updates.

Acknowledge CANFD_INT before waking the queue.
A second transmission can complete after netif_wake_queue(ndev) but before the stale isr is acknowledged. The write can clear that completion without processing it, leaving echo slot 0 occupied and the queue stopped. Move the acknowledgement immediately after the status read.

Review comment at @drivers/net/can/rockchip/rk3576_canfd.c at line 991:
Move the `CANFD_INT` acknowledgement in the transmit completion path to
immediately after the interrupt status read and before `netif_wake_queue(ndev)`.
This prevents a later completion from being cleared by acknowledging stale
status; preserve the existing completion handling and queue-wake behavior.

Synchronize RX work before gating clocks.
When an open interface suspends, rk3576_canfd_suspend() stops the controller but does not disable NAPI or terminate RX DMA. A pending callback or poll can therefore run after pm_runtime_force_suspend() disables clocks and access controller registers. Disable NAPI and terminate DMA during suspend, then re-enable NAPI during resume.

Restore the timer state when the TMRC write fails.
pcf8563_wdt_program() writes the count to PCF8563_REG_TMR before it writes the clock select to PCF8563_REG_TMRC. When an armed timer changes from 1 Hz to 1/60 Hz, a failed TMRC write returns an error and leaves the source at 1 Hz. The timer can then expire before the requested timeout. Later keepalive pings do not restore the source. Handle the TMRC failure before returning, for example by restoring the previous count or disarming the timer.

Restore the programmed timeout state when pcf8563_wdt_set_timeout fails.
When pcf8563_wdt_program() fails at the TMR write, wdd->timeout keeps the rejected value. A later keepalive writes that value into TMR, but TMRC still selects the 1 Hz source. The watchdog then expires about five seconds after the ping. Track the timeout that the hardware actually uses, or roll back the hardware state on error.

Schedule NAPI when the DMA RX quota is zero, so the RX interrupts get unmasked.
When the FIFO count gives a quota of zero, rk3576_canfd_rx_dma() returns without submitting DMA. The interrupt handler has already masked ISM_WTM_INT, RX_STR_TIMEOUT_INT, and RX_FINISH_INT. Restore the CAN state after automatic bus-off recovery.
When BUSOFF_RCY_INT occurs without a warning interrupt or explicit restart, this code starts the transmit queue but leaves rcan->can.state as CAN_STATE_BUS_OFF. Userspace can therefore observe Bus Off while transmission is enabled. Set the state to CAN_STATE_ERROR_ACTIVE after recovery.

Do not enable FD mode by default.
alloc_candev() starts with CAN_MTU, but this driver sets CAN_CTRLMODE_FD before registration. A nominal-only bitrate configuration leaves the data bitrate unset, so open_candev() rejects interface open with -EINVAL. Remove the default FD assignment. Users can enable FD mode explicitly through CAN netlink, which also updates the MTU.
Suggested fix
- rcan->can.ctrlmode = CAN_CTRLMODE_FD;

Block RTC alarms when nxp,timer-watchdog is set.
pcf8563_probe() keeps .set_alarm and .alarm_irq_enable active when client->irq is zero. The RTC core can still enable AIE, and the PCF8563 can assert its INT output when the alarm expires. This board wires INT to reset, so a user-enabled RTC alarm can reset the board.
Reject alarm operations in watchdog mode, or clear RTC_FEATURE_ALARM after devm_rtc_register_device() has set the feature.

Preserve the PCF8563 watchdog during probe.
If firmware leaves the PCF8563 timer active, pcf8563_probe() disables it before pcf8563_wdt_register() runs. Watchdog registration does not adopt or start the hardware, and userspace must open the device before protection resumes. This gap already exists at merge base 85233a85b67928000afc2e966bab86a8c414f1b4; this PR keeps it reachable.

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Adding ext_clock to the WLAN platform-data node relies on that consumer preparing and enabling the PCF85063 clock output; merely declaring the clock may leave the module without its required 32.768 kHz signal.
Wi-Fi may fail to start or operate reliably.
This can occur when: Powering up the on-module WLAN after boot.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The warning-state check runs after BUS_OFF and PASSIVE handling and unconditionally replaces their CAN state with CAN_STATE_ERROR_WARNING when the warning bit is also set.
SocketCAN reports a less severe state than the controller's actual error state.
This can occur when: A bus-off or passive error interrupt arrives while CANFD_STATE retains ERR_WARNING_STATE.

L2311@P68: timing is used as defined by the Nominal Bit Timing & Prescaler Register NBTP. In the following
L2312@P68: CAN FD data phase, the data phase bit timing is used as defined by the Data Bit Timing & Prescaler
L2313@P68: Register DBTP. The bit timing is switched back from the data phase timing at the CRC delimiter or
L2314@P68: when an error is detected, whichever occurs first.
L2315@P68: The maximum configurable bit rate in the CAN FD data phase depends on the CAN clock frequency
L2316@P68: (m_can_cclk). Example: with a CAN clock frequency of 20MHz and the shortest configurable bit
L2317@P68: time of 4 tq, the bit rate in the data phase is 5 Mbit/s.
L2318@P68: In both data frame formats, CAN FD and CAN FD with bit rate switching, the value of the bit ESI
L2319@P68: (Error Status Indicator) is determined by the transmitter’s error state at the start of the transmission.
L2320@P68: If the transmitter is error passive, ESI is transmitted recessive, else it is transmitted dominant.
L2321@P68: 3.1.4 Transmitter Delay Compensation
L2322@P68: During the data phase of a CAN FD transmission only one node is transmitting, all others are
L2323@P68: receivers. The length of the bus line has no impact. When transmitting via pin m_can_tx the M_CAN
L2324@P68: receives the transmitted data from its local CAN transceiver via pin m_can_rx. The received data is
L2325@P68: delayed by the transmitter delay. In case this delay is greater than TSEG1 (time segment before
L2326@P68: sample point), a bit error is detected. In order to enable a data phase bit time that is even shorter
L2327@P68: than the transmitter delay, the delay compensation is introduced. Without transmitter delay
L2328@P68: compensation, the bit rate in the data phase of a CAN FD frame is limited by the transmitter delay.
L2329@P68: 3.1.4.1 Description
L2330@P68: The M_CAN’s protocol unit has implemented a delay compensation mechanism to compensate the
L2331@P68: transmitter delay, thereby enabling transmission with higher bit rates during the CAN FD data phase
L2332@P68: independent of the delay of a specific CAN transceiver.
L2333@P68: To check for bit errors during the data phase of transmitting nodes, the delayed transmit data is
L2334@P68: compared against the received data at the Secondary Sample Point SSP. If a bit error is detected,
L2335@P68: the transmitter will react on this bit error at the next following regular sample point. During arbitration
L2336@P68: phase the delay compensation is always disabled.
L2337@P68: The transmitter delay compensation enables configurations where the data bit time is shorter than
L2338@P68: the transmitter delay, it is described in detail in ISO 11898-1:2015. It is enabled by setting bit
L2339@P68: DBTP.TDC.
L2340@P68: The received bit is compared against the transmitted bit at the SSP. The SSP position is defined as
L2341@P68: the sum of the measured delay from the M_CAN’s transmit output m_can_tx through the transceiver
L2342@P68: to the receive input m_can_rx plus the transmitter delay compensation offset as configured by
L2343@P68: TDCR.TDCO. The transmitter delay compensation offset is used to adjust the position of the SSP
L2344@P68: inside the received bit (e.g. half of the bit time in the data phase). The position of the secondary
L2345@P68: sample point is rounded down to the next integer number of mtq.
L2346@P68: PSR.TDCV shows the actual transmitter delay compensation value. PSR.TDCV is cleared when
L2347@P68: CCCR.INIT is set and is updated at each transmission of an FD frame while DBTP.TDC is set.
L2348@P68: DLC 9 10 11 12 13 14 15
L2349@P68-69: Number of Data Bytes 12 16 20 24 32 48 6460 11.03.2023
L2350@P69: M_CAN Revision 3.3.1
L2351@P69: The following boundary conditions have to be considered for the transmitter delay compensation
L2352@P69: implemented in the M_CAN:
L2353@P69: • The sum of the measured delay from m_can_tx to m_can_rx and the configured transmitter
L2354@P69: delay compensation offset TDCR.TDCO has to be less than 6 bit times in the data phase.
L2355@P69: • The sum of the measured delay from m_can_tx to m_can_rx and the configured transmitter
L2356@P69: delay compensation offset TDCR.TDCO has to be less or equal 127 mtq. In case this sum
L2357@P69: exceeds 127 mtq, the maximum value of 127 mtq is used for transmitter delay compensation.
L2358@P69: • The data phase ends at the sample point of the CRC delimiter, that stops checking of receive bits
L2359@P69: at the SSPs

Preserve data-phase SJW values 1 and 2.
When SocketCAN requests SJW 1 or 2, this clamp writes DSJW 2. The controller interprets DSJW as value plus one, so both requests become SJW 3.

The binding accepts any uint32 for timeout-sec. The driver accepts only 1–15300 s. With nxp,timer-watchdog set, timeout-sec = <0> or timeout-sec = <15301> passes validation. The driver logs an error and keeps its 60 s default.

Serialize the watchdog and alarm ST2 read-modify-write sequences.
pcf8563_wdt_program() and pcf8563_wdt_ping() update ST2 with no lock. pcf8563_set_alarm_mode() also updates ST2 with no lock. An alarm update that reads ST2 before watchdog start and writes it afterward clears TIE. The countdown then runs, but timer expiry does not drive INT, so the reset circuit is not triggered. Add one mutex in the driver data and hold it around every ST2 read-modify-write sequence: pcf8563_set_alarm_mode(), pcf8563_wdt_program(), and pcf8563_wdt_ping().

Preserve watchdog protection on every failed stop operation.
pcf8563_wdt_program() disarms TMRC before updating ST2. If the ST2 read or write fails, watchdog_stop() keeps the watchdog active, but pcf8563_wdt_ping() never re-enables TMRC. The hardware watchdog can therefore remain disabled.
Do not fix this only by moving ST2 before TMRC. If the later TMRC write fails, TIE is already disabled, so timer expiry sets TF but cannot assert INT. Add rollback or error handling that prevents an active watchdog from returning with either TMRC or TIE disabled.

The rk3576_canfd.c driver is restored from the pre-rkr7.2 vendor base (before upstream renamed it to a classic-only rk3576_can.c in 7a7734a), with a TX-queue wedge fix on top (strict single-frame-in-flight protocol). The remaining CodeRabbit findings there target the vendor-original code; we'd rather keep it as-is unless a maintainer wants specific ones addressed -- same for the rtc error-path nits. The TI_TP finding was a real bug and is fixed (amended into the pcf8563 commit; datasheet Control_status_2 01h confirms bit 4).
On boards where the PCF8563 INT output is wired to the system reset
circuit, the countdown timer can serve as an external hardware
watchdog. Register a watchdog device when the nxp,timer-watchdog DT
property is present, so chips used as the system RTC (INT doing alarm
duty) keep their INT to themselves.
Timeouts of 1-255 s run off the 1 Hz source; longer ones use the
1/60 Hz source (rounded up, max 255 min). Ping rewrites the countdown
register, stop clears TE/TIE and a stale TF. Plain close keeps the
timer running; only the magic close character disarms it
(WDIOF_MAGICCLOSE semantics).
Arm the INT output in pulse mode (TI_TP=1): the POR-default level
mode holds INT low after expiry until TF is cleared over I2C -- with
INT wired to a reset circuit and the SoC held in reset, nobody is
alive to clear it, so the box wedges until a full power cycle. Ping
preserves TI_TP so the stale-flag cleanup cannot silently flip the
chip back to level mode.
Verified on reComputer Industrial RK3576 (PCF8563T on I2C3, INT wired
to the SoC reset line): start/ping/set_timeout/stop via /dev/watchdog
and a real watchdog-triggered hard reset (level-mode arming at the
time; TI_TP=1 readback pending next flash).
The rkr7.2-era vendor base replaced rk3576_canfd.c (CAN-FD capable,
compatible "rockchip,rk3576-canfd") with a classic-only rewrite
rk3576_can.c, losing CAN_CTRLMODE_FD support and hanging the TX queue
under burst load. Restore the CAN-FD driver and override the can1
compatible in the reComputer Industrial board dts, so this board gets
working CAN FD while every other rk3576 board keeps the vendor
default. rk3576_can.c stays for the boards using the old compatible.
The restored driver also fixes the TX queue wedge, which the pre-rename
driver had as well: it keeps a single echo slot (index 0) but arms a
second TX slot in xmit when it reads CANFD_TX0_REQ as busy, while the
TX_DONE interrupt handler clears CANFD_CMD unconditionally before
waking the queue. On SMP the woken xmit can run on another CPU while
the handler is still returning, so its CANFD_CMD write lands after
xmit armed the next frame and kills the pending request: that frame
never completes, and the stopped queue is never woken again.
Enforce a strict single-frame-in-flight protocol: always use TX0 and
never write CANFD_CMD from the interrupt handler (the request bit is
self-clearing, which is what makes it usable as the busy indicator).

M.2 B-key slot: SPI3 CS0 at 50 MHz, IRQ on GPIO2_D6, reset on

The morse-fgh100m SPI transport never toggles reset-gpios (the call
is commented out in src/spi.c) and the board has no pull-up on the
reset line, so the overlay hogs GPIO2_B7 high to release the chip
from reset. Without the hog the probe fails with -EIO (SPI reads

⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Enabling nxp,timer-watchdog creates a board-to-driver and kernel-configuration contract: the RTC driver must recognize the property and have watchdog support reachable in the shipped configuration. Otherwise the reset-wired countdown timer is not exposed as the requested watchdog.
/dev/watchdog is absent despite the board's watchdog node.
This can occur when: A board image boots with an RTC/watchdog configuration or rtc-pcf8563 implementation that does not register the property-controlled watchdog.
⚠️Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
The MM6108 interrupt is assigned GPIO2_B6, while the supplied board DTS names that line SX1261_RST. If that name reflects the carrier wiring, this pin cannot independently serve as the B-key module's interrupt.
HaLow interrupts are missed or SX1261 reset activity is interpreted as HaLow interrupts.
This can occur when: The overlay is enabled with the MM6108 installed, particularly when an SX1261 is also present.

Enable CANFD_RK3576 in the board's default configuration.
The board DTS binds CAN1 to rockchip,rk3576-canfd with status = "okay". Only rk3576_canfd.c implements that compatible, and it builds only with CONFIG_CANFD_RK3576. rockchip_linux_defconfig sets only CONFIG_CAN_RK3576=y, so a default build leaves CAN1 without a driver.

Handle retransmission failure in the RK3576 CAN FD interrupt handler.
When automatic retransmission reaches its limit, the controller raises a retransmission failure interrupt, not TX_FINISH_INT. rk3576_canfd_interrupt() does not handle AUTO_RETX_FAIL_INT. Preserve AF when writing ST2 from pcf8563_wdt_ping().
When dirty is nonzero, the watchdog ping writes the previously read AF value back to ST2. If an alarm sets AF after the read, this write can clear the alarm before pcf8563_irq() reports it.
Writing AF=1 leaves the flag unchanged. Set AF in watchdog-owned ST2 write-backs. This does not replace synchronization between software writers.

In pcf8563_wdt_ping(), set PCF8563_BIT_AF in ST2 before writing it back so the
watchdog write preserves a pending alarm flag. Keep the existing dirty-bit
handling and write path unchanged.

Round the initial DT timeout before the watchdog reports it.
pcf8563_wdt_register() stores the timeout-sec value unchanged. A 256 s timeout is reported as 256 s, but the PCF8563 countdown runs for 300 s. Apply the same whole-minute rounding that pcf8563_wdt_set_timeout() uses, after watchdog_init_timeout() returns.

Review comment at @drivers/rtc/rtc-pcf8563.c at line 514:
Update pcf8563_wdt_register() to round the initialized watchdog timeout up to a
whole minute after watchdog_init_timeout() returns, matching
pcf8563_wdt_set_timeout() for values above 255 seconds. Preserve the existing
initialization error handling.

The rk3576_canfd.c driver is restored from the pre-rkr7.2 vendor base (before upstream renamed it to a classic-only rk3576_can.c in 7a7734a), with a TX-queue wedge fix on top (strict single-frame-in-flight protocol).
It appears that RK has added back CAN-FD support in commits newer than rkr7.2 branch. Could you backport those changes as-is, and then apply your custom fixes on top? I think this is better than adding a duplicate driver.

Add Seeed Studio reComputer Industrial RK3576 support
Adds device tree support for the Seeed Studio reComputer Industrial RK3576,
a carrier board built around the RK3576 SoM (4GB/8GB LPDDR5, 16GB/32GB eMMC).
Board highlights covered by this series:
Commits
(SoM + carrier description, self-contained SoM override section for SDIO
timing, HDMI DDC fix and eMMC SKU selection).
countdown timer is wired to the SoC reset line on this board; register a
watchdog device so systemd
RuntimeWatchdogSeccan feed it. TI/TP pulseoutput mode is used to keep the timeout programmable at runtime.
block was dropped from the vendor tree; restore
rk3576_canfd.cplus itsKconfig/Makefile wiring (DT-gated, no effect on other boards).
overlay — optional overlay for the M.2 B-key slot (Morse MM6108 over
SPI3 CS0, RESET line hogged high because the board has no pull-up and the
Morse SPI driver does not reset the module).
Build integration lives in the companion PR against armbian/build.
