Stacked on #1036

What and why

Fixes #1033.

A browser build of the SDK (create() in a page, WebMCP) has no TCP socket for Redis and no file for SQLite. #1028 made the SDK's own stores refuse them at startup with BrowserStoreUnavailableError, but plugins open their stores themselves, so they never took part. CachePlugin and RememberPlugin on type: 'global-store' took the server's top-level redis, and 'redis' / 'redis-client' built an ioredis client anyway. In a page that store failed on its first call. ApprovalPlugin and ResultHandlesPlugin with storage: { type: 'redis' | 'sqlite' } went through createStorage(), which fell back to memory with a warning, or failed with a connection or module error in production.

One helper for every plugin

The SDK now exports refusePluginStoreInBrowser({ plugin, option, memory }). A plugin calls it where it builds its store, before the store connects:

  • option names what would open Redis or SQLite. It is undefined when nothing would, and then the helper refuses nothing.
  • memory names the plugin option that keeps the store in memory.

In runtime === 'browser' (the same getRuntimeContext() check the SDK's own stores use), the helper throws the same BrowserStoreUnavailableError (BROWSER_STORE_UNAVAILABLE). error.stores holds [pluginName, option], and the message reads, for example, A browser cannot open Redis or SQLite: CachePlugin would use type: 'global-store' (set type: 'memory' in place of type: 'global-store'). In any other runtime it does nothing, so Node servers behave as before. Plugins never check for a browser themselves: the check lives in one place, and future plugins get the same refusal with one call.

To describe a plugin's store, the error class takes the memory option of each plugin store as a second, optional constructor argument. BrowserRefusedStore widens to 'tasks' | 'elicitation' | 'questions' | 'jobs' | (string & {}), so a plugin's name fits and the SDK's names still autocomplete. A plugin's own memory option wins over an SDK store of the same name.

Where each plugin refuses

Plugin Refused in a browser When Memory option named
CachePlugin type: 'global-store' on a Redis top-level redis at startup, in the store's factory, before new CacheRedisProvider type: 'memory'
CachePlugin type: 'redis', 'redis-client' in init(), where the Redis provider is built type: 'memory'
RememberPlugin type: 'global-store' on a Redis top-level redis at startup, in the store's factory type: 'memory'
RememberPlugin type: 'redis' (with config), 'redis-client' (with client) in init() type: 'memory'
ApprovalPlugin storage: { type: 'redis' } or { type: 'sqlite' }, unless storageInstance is given (it wins over storage) in init(), once for the approval store and the webhook ChallengeService storage: { type: 'memory' }
ResultHandlesPlugin storage: { type: 'redis' } or { type: 'sqlite' } in init() storage: { type: 'memory' }

These stay allowed in a browser: Vercel KV (a top-level redis: { provider: 'vercel-kv' }, or type: 'vercel-kv'), Upstash, Cloudflare KV and storage: { type: 'auto' }. The browser getEnv returns no REDIS_URL, so 'auto' resolves to memory in a page.

The explicit 'redis' / 'redis-client' configs are refused in init() because that is where the plugins already build their Redis provider (useValue). Moving that to startup would change when a Node server connects, and Node must behave as before.

Left open: one refusal at a time

The SDK refuses its own stores early in scope.initialize(), before any plugin's providers are built. The plugins refuse theirs when those providers are built. So a page with a Redis top-level redis and CachePlugin on global-store is refused for background tasks first (tasks.store: false), and only after that switch is set for the plugin. For one error to name both, each plugin would have to declare its stores to the scope before its providers are built: a new plugin hook. The SDK's own check isn't a single call either, since questions and jobs are refused where they are set up. So the order is left as it is.

The other plugins under plugins/ (codecall, dashboard, feature-flags, skilled-openapi, webmcp) open no Redis or SQLite store. RememberStorageProvider is a standalone class that RememberPlugin does not use, so it is left as is.

User-facing change

  • What changed:
    • New export from @frontmcp/sdk: refusePluginStoreInBrowser({ plugin, option, memory }, runtime?) and its PluginStoreInBrowser type.
    • BrowserStoreUnavailableError now also covers plugin stores: new BrowserStoreUnavailableError(stores, pluginMemory?), with BrowserRefusedStore widened to take a plugin's name.
    • In a browser build, CachePlugin, RememberPlugin, ApprovalPlugin and ResultHandlesPlugin refuse a store on Redis or SQLite with that error. The message names the plugin and its memory option, e.g. CachePlugin would use type: 'redis' (set type: 'memory' in place of type: 'redis') and ApprovalPlugin would use storage: { type: 'sqlite' } (set storage: { type: 'memory' } in place of storage: { type: 'sqlite' }).
  • Before → after:
    • Browser, CachePlugin / RememberPlugin on global-store with a Redis top-level redis: the server started, opened an ioredis client, and the store failed on first use → startup fails with BrowserStoreUnavailableError before any connection, naming type: 'memory'.
    • Browser, type: 'redis' / 'redis-client': the client was built at init() → init() throws the same error.
    • Browser, ApprovalPlugin / ResultHandlesPlugin with storage on Redis or SQLite: memory with a warning, or a connection or module error in production → init() throws the same error, naming storage: { type: 'memory' }.
    • Node: unchanged.
  • frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the cache, remember, approval and result-handles plugin references; browser build / WebMCP limitations; plugin authoring (configurable plugins); errors reference (BROWSER_STORE_UNAVAILABLE).
  • Skills catalog entries updated:
    • frontmcp-development/references/official-plugins.md: the browser refusal for the Remember and Cache storage types, and for Approval storage.
    • frontmcp-development/references/result-handles-plugin.md: the browser refusal for storage.
    • frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin.md: new section "A store a browser cannot open", which shows refusePluginStoreInBrowser() for plugin authors, its message and error.stores, and when to call it for a top-level redis.
    • frontmcp-deployment/references/build-for-browser.md: the official plugins refuse with the same error, what they did up to 1.10, and a link to the helper.
    • Also the global-store / storage sections of the READMEs of plugin-cache, plugin-remember, plugin-approval and plugin-result-handles.

Bundle size

The growth is the error class's plugin-store branch. refusePluginStoreInBrowser is tree-shaken out of a page that doesn't import it. Measured against a388ff236 (#1030's head):

Bundle Base This PR Δ Budget
create() + one tool 1,294,971 1,295,039 +68 1,295,507 (unchanged)
create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool 1,302,155 1,302,223 +68 1,302,379 (unchanged)
Vite initial chunk 761,771 761,836 +65 761,903 (unchanged)

Every bundle stays within its budget, so no budget moves.

Tests

  • Unit:
    • libs/sdk/src/scope/__tests__/browser-stores.spec.ts: refusePluginStoreInBrowser throws BrowserStoreUnavailableError in a browser with the plugin's stores entry and message, and names the plugin's option for a plugin named like an SDK store (jobs). It refuses nothing with option: undefined, on Node, or with the real runtime.
    • plugins/plugin-cache/src/__tests__/cache.plugin.browser-store.spec.ts and plugins/plugin-remember/src/__tests__/remember.browser-store.spec.ts set the runtime to browser (mocked getRuntimeContext) and check that:
      • a global-store server with a Redis top-level redis fails createDirect() with the error, and ioredis is never constructed;
      • init({ type: 'redis' | 'redis-client' }) throws before it connects;
      • type: 'memory' with the top-level redis left in the config, and a global-store on Vercel KV, both start.
      • On Node, global-store still builds its Redis client.
    • plugins/plugin-approval/src/__tests__/approval.browser-store.spec.ts and plugins/plugin-result-handles/src/__tests__/result-handles.browser-store.spec.ts: in a browser, storage: { type: 'redis' } and { type: 'sqlite' } throw from init() with the memory option named. Memory, auto, Vercel KV and (for Approval) a storageInstance given in place of storage are kept. On Node, Redis and SQLite are kept.
  • e2e:
    • apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/browser-plugin-stores.e2e.spec.ts, modelled on browser-stores. It bundles a page (browser conditions, ES modules run by Node) with CachePlugin or RememberPlugin and a top-level redis that points at a TCP listener posing as Redis.
      • On global-store, startup fails with BROWSER_STORE_UNAVAILABLE and the plugin's message.
      • With type: 'memory' for both, the page starts and calls its tool without a warning.
      • The listener gets no connection either way.
      • Red first: before the fix, the cache and remember pages connected to the listener and never settled.
    • bundleEntriesWithSharedChunks takes { nodeRequire: true }, which gives each chunk a require(). The bundled ioredis (CommonJS) needs it to load Node's built-ins.
    • The project's build / test targets now depend on plugin-cache and plugin-remember builds.
    • sdk-root-exports.json pins the new refusePluginStoreInBrowser export.
    • apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer: memory-stores-must-compile.ts types refusePluginStoreInBrowser, PluginStoreInBrowser and new BrowserStoreUnavailableError(stores, pluginMemory), and rejects a call without memory.
  • Ran:
    • nx run-many -t lint test -p sdk plugin-cache plugin-remember plugin-approval plugin-result-handles skills: no lint errors, and no warnings in the changed files. Unit tests: sdk 9,306, plugin-cache 207, plugin-remember 520, plugin-approval 431, plugin-result-handles 86, skills 249.
    • nx run-many -t build -p sdk plugin-webmcp plugin-cache plugin-remember --skip-nx-cache.
    • nx test demo-e2e-bundle-size: 45 tests. nx test demo-e2e-dts-consumer: 35 tests.
    • tsc --noEmit -p tsconfig.e2e.json in demo-e2e-bundle-size, and a --noEmit typecheck of the changed SDK and plugin sources and specs.
    • node scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs a388ff236, and prettier on the changed files.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Browser builds now report BrowserStoreUnavailableError when Cache, Remember, Approval, or Result Handles plugins select unsupported Redis or SQLite stores, with guidance to use memory storage.
    • Vercel KV and memory storage remain available in browsers; server-side storage behavior is unchanged.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Cache plugin header bypass settings now require a nonempty x-frontmcp- header name.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on browser storage limitations and plugin store configuration.

…r build

CachePlugin and RememberPlugin on global-store took the top-level redis
in a page, which has no TCP socket: the store fell back to memory with a
warning or failed on its first call. refusePluginStoreInBrowser(), from
@frontmcp/sdk, throws BrowserStoreUnavailableError in a browser for a
plugin store that would open Redis or SQLite, naming the plugin option
that keeps it in memory. CachePlugin, RememberPlugin, ApprovalPlugin and
ResultHandlesPlugin call it where they build their store. Node servers
are unchanged.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "fix(sdk,plugins): plugin stores refuse Redis or SQLite in a browser build" matches the main change. The PR adds the refusePluginStoreInBrowser helper and makes CachePlugin, RememberPlugin, ApprovalPlugin and ResultHandlesPlugin refuse Redis or SQLite stores in browser builds with BrowserStoreUnavailableError. The title is concise, follows the conventional commit style, and names the affected area (sdk and plugins).

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has the 'What and why' section, which links the issue (#1033) and explains the problem and the new helper. It has the 'User-facing change' section, with what changed, before and after, affected frontmcp.dev pages, and skills catalog entries. It has the 'Tests' section, which lists unit, e2e, and manual validation runs. The description is detailed and covers the required information. The 'Left open' section and bundle-size table go beyond the template but do not conflict with it.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#1033] requires browser refusal for CachePlugin and RememberPlugin global-store configurations that use Redis or SQLite, with BrowserStoreUnavailableError, the plugin memory option, and unchanged Node behavior. The supplied change evidence shows checks in the global-store factories before Redis provider creation. The added browser tests verify the error, the memory recommendation, and no ioredis construction. The Node tests verify that the Redis global-store path still builds.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The browser-store helper, error extension, plugin tests, E2E coverage, and documentation support the linked browser-store objective. The change summary also reports new CachePlugin validation for bypassHeader values. That validation is unrelated to issue [#1033] and is not part of the current PR intent. The Approval and Result Handles browser-store changes are related extensions of the same refusal policy described in the PR.

Resolution

Remove the unrelated bypassHeader validation from this pull request, or link a coding requirement that requires it.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 65.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 8 functions across 17 files. (10 skipped: 10 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
