fix(sdk): load the transport, job/tools and workflow/tools subpaths at runtime - #1027
@frontmcp/sdk's published exports map offers three subpaths, ./transport, ./job/tools and ./workflow/tools, but the build only ever emitted their .d.ts files. None of their require or import targets (transport/index.js, esm/transport/index.mjs, job/tools/index.js, esm/job/tools/index.mjs, workflow/tools/index.js, esm/workflow/tools/index.mjs) is in any published version (checked 0.4.0, 0.8.0, 1.0.0, 1.5.0 and 1.10.16). Type imports worked, but require('@frontmcp/sdk/job/tools') threw MODULE_NOT_FOUND and import threw ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND. The skills catalog's create-job.md told users to import from these subpaths.
The fix:
Each subpath is a re-export of the root entry. The build target now runs scripts/build-subpath-reexports.mjs libs/sdk. For each subpath in libs/sdk/package.json that has a development source, the script bundles that source barrel with esbuild, its packages kept external, and reads the names of the values the bundle exports, so a type the barrel re-exports without export type stays out of the subpath. It then writes the subpath's require and import files as export { … } from '@frontmcp/sdk', keeping @frontmcp/sdk external. A subpath therefore hands back the root's own classes, require('@frontmcp/sdk/job/tools').ExecuteJobTool === require('@frontmcp/sdk').ExecuteJobTool, and never bundles a second copy of the SDK (a second ToolContext, token or registry would break DI and instanceof). The names come from the barrel, so a value added to a barrel reaches its subpath without another change. A barrel that re-exports another package with export * fails the build, because its names can't be read.
The subpaths need no browser condition. The re-export names the package, not a file, so it resolves to whichever root build the importer gets: index.js under require, esm/index.mjs under import, and the browser build in a browser bundle. A browser app that imports a subpath and the root gets one copy of the SDK. The name resolves through the package's own node_modules folder, or through package self-reference when the SDK is linked from outside one; checked with Node, esbuild (Node and Worker conditions), webpack 5 and Vite 8, each with one copy of the SDK.
The root entry exports the seven values only ./transport had:RecreateableStreamableHTTPServerTransport, RecreateableSSEServerTransport, SSEServerTransport, createEventStore, MemoryEventStore, RedisEventStore and buildScopedServerOptions. The first six go through ./subsystems, so the CommonJS build loads each of them the first time it is read (lazy-subsystems.ts). Loading the SDK under require() still initializes the same 541 modules, and the Streamable HTTP transport, with @hono/node-server and undici, still loads only once a server listens or the export is read. Under import, the SDK loads the same 609 files as before and initializes 9 more of its own modules at load (614 → 623): the transports' and event stores' class definitions, which the ESM build already bundled for import(). In the browser builds the root entry now imports those modules statically: an app's bundler drops them unless the app uses them, so the bundles below don't change, and dist/browser/index.cjs initializes 8 more modules at load. buildScopedServerOptions was already initialized at load in every build.
Jobs and workflows still load on first use. The job/tools and workflow/tools files read the root's lazy getters, so requiring a subpath sets up nothing until one of its classes is read, as with the root.
User-facing change
What changed:@frontmcp/sdk/transport, @frontmcp/sdk/job/tools and @frontmcp/sdk/workflow/tools load at runtime, and each export of a subpath is the same object the root entry exports. The root entry exports seven more values, listed above.
Before → after:
require('@frontmcp/sdk/job/tools'): Error: Cannot find module '…/@frontmcp/sdk/job/tools/index.js' (MODULE_NOT_FOUND) → the six job tool classes, each === the root's.
await import('@frontmcp/sdk/workflow/tools'): ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND for esm/workflow/tools/index.mjs → the five workflow tool classes, each === the root's.
require('@frontmcp/sdk/transport') and import: the same errors → 15 values (transports, event stores, createInMemoryServer, createWebFetchHandler, STATELESS_SESSION_ID, …).
import { createEventStore, RecreateableStreamableHTTPServerTransport } from '@frontmcp/sdk': not exported (a type error, and undefined at runtime) → exported.
frontmcp-development/references/create-job.md: the subpaths re-export the root's classes, don't make a bundle smaller, and up to 1.10 shipped declarations only (import from @frontmcp/sdk there).
frontmcp-config/references/configure-transport.md: the event stores and transports are importable from @frontmcp/sdk and @frontmcp/sdk/transport, and weren't loadable at runtime up to 1.10.

Tests
Unit, libs/sdk/src/__tests__/subpath-exports.spec.ts (new): for each of the three subpath barrels, every value it exports is the root entry's own. Failed for ./transport before the change (seven values missing from the root).
e2e, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/sdk-subpath-exports.e2e.spec.ts (new), against the built package:
every file the published dist/package.jsonexports map names exists (the guard that fails when a target isn't emitted);
each subpath, loaded through the published map from a project with @frontmcp/sdk installed (a symlink to dist), exports at least one value under require() and under import, the same names under both, and only values === the root's;
a browser bundle of the three subpaths and the root takes every SDK module from dist/browser/.
All 11 failed on the base with MODULE_NOT_FOUND / ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND or a missing file.
Script, scripts/build-subpath-reexports.test.mjs (new, run by node --test scripts/*.test.mjs): the script writes a subpath's require and import files as re-exports of the root, keeps a type re-exported without export type out of them, reads a local export *, and fails on an export * from another package.
e2e, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/fixture/subpath-exports-must-compile.ts (new): the three subpaths and the seven new root exports compile under nodenext with skipLibCheck off, each subpath value has the root export's type, and createEventStore is typed. Fails on the base, where the root lacks the seven values.
e2e, sdk-lazy-subsystems.e2e.spec.ts: the new transport and event-store modules are not initialized when the SDK loads under require(), and are when RecreateableStreamableHTTPServerTransport, SSEServerTransport or createEventStore is read.
e2e, sdk-root-exports.e2e.spec.ts: the pinned root exports gain the seven new names, under require() and import.
Ran: nx test sdk (661 suites, 9,260 tests), nx test skills (249), nx lint sdk skills (no errors), nx test demo-e2e-bundle-size (37, on this branch merged with main; the sizes above are within main's budgets of 1,340,056, 1,347,378 and 964,827 bytes), demo-e2e-dts-consumer (34, against the built declarations), node --test scripts/*.test.mjs (88), the bundle-size app's tsc --noEmit, tsc --noEmit -p libs/sdk/tsconfig.spec.json, and the npm pack tarball installed in a CommonJS and an ESM project: every subpath value is === the root's under require and import, and TypeScript resolves the subpaths' declarations, with the same value names as at runtime, under node16, nodenext and bundler (node10 finds them too, but not the #sse-transport import their declarations share with the root's).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
SDK transport, event-store, and job/workflow tool exports are now available through package entry points at runtime, including both CommonJS and ESM.
Bug Fixes
Fixed runtime import failures for documented SDK subpaths.
Documentation
Clarified which package entry points provide transport and tool exports, and noted that subpaths do not reduce bundle size.
…dashboard and edge instead of bundling it
The three packages bundled @frontmcp/utils, so their builds imported utils'
own dependencies (@noble/ciphers, @noble/hashes, @enclave-vm/ast,
@upstash/redis, @vercel/kv, ioredis, zod, @frontmcp/lazy-zod) without
declaring them, and loaded a second copy of utils next to the SDK's.
- add @frontmcp/utils to the external list of the CommonJS and ESM builds
- declare @frontmcp/utils at the internal version in plugin-dashboard and edge
- drop the @enclave-vm/ast dependency added in #953; utils declares it
- add demo-e2e-published-imports: packs each package, fails on bundled utils
code or an undeclared bare import, and loads all three under require and
import in a fresh npm project with @enclave-vm/ast 2.16.0 at the top level
Closes#956
Status, content type and body of the answers to JSON, form and other
bodies (charsets, encodings, malformed JSON, limits), and the error a later
error handler receives, before the JSON parser changes.
…ncoding
body-parser's json() decodes UTF-8 through iconv-lite, whose first decoder
loads all of its encodings, about 400 of them, on a server's first JSON
body. The Express host now reads application/json bodies with no charset
or charset=utf-8 through body-parser's raw(), so limits, inflation and read
errors stay its own, then decodes and parses them as json() does: byte
order mark dropped, empty body as {}, the same strict-mode and syntax
errors. Bodies in any other charset still go through json().
Refs #951
The SDK's ESM bundle imported @frontmcp/protocol/client for the direct
client and remote apps, so an ESM process loaded the MCP SDK's client and
its transports at startup. Under require() that subpath was already lazy.
Both now take the client from #protocol-client. Its import variant, which
the ESM build resolves, is a dynamic import() of @frontmcp/protocol/client;
everywhere else it is the static module, so the CommonJS (kept external,
lazy under require()), browser and Worker builds load as before.
Refs #951
The MCP SDK's Server builds an Ajv instance with ajv-formats in its
constructor, to check the results of the elicitations it requests itself.
FrontMCP never calls it for that, yet built one per session (per request on
a stateless web-standard server), about 2.5 ms on a server's first request.
Every MCP server FrontMCP creates now comes from createMcpServer(), whose
validator builds the same AjvJsonSchemaValidator on its first use, so a
server that does validate gets the same answers. @frontmcp/protocol exports
AjvJsonSchemaValidator for it.
Refs #951
… scan and time out npm child processes
The scan reported any function or class named like a @frontmcp/utils export, so a local helper
such as escapeHtml failed it. Names the package's own sources define are now left out, and a
positive control checks that the remaining names still identify definitions in utils' build.
npm install and the load checks run synchronously, which blocks Jest's own timeouts; they now
time out on their own.
When a host hands over a request whose body was already read into a
Buffer, body-parser's raw() skips it and json() leaves it as it is. The
UTF-8 parser parsed that Buffer anyway; it now parses only a body its own
raw() read.
Refs #951
…tens
The transport, and through it @hono/node-server and Node's bundled undici,
loaded with the first Streamable HTTP session, so a server's first
initialize waited for it. A scope that serves Streamable HTTP (streamable,
stateless or JSON responses) now loads it right after the server starts
listening, which is not on the path to listening and is usually before a
client arrives. A stdio server, a serverless handler and a Worker never
start listening and load it as before; an SSE-only server still never
loads it.
Refs #951
… server comes from
`AjvJsonSchemaValidator` came straight from the MCP SDK while `McpServer` comes
through `#mcp-server`, which resolves to the SDK's CommonJS build under `import`.
An ESM server therefore loaded the validator module from both builds. Both now
come from `#mcp-server`.
… transport early
The body pins add brotli, two byte order marks, a parameter other than charset
and a vendor +json type; they pass with and without the UTF-8 JSON parser.
A listening server loads the Streamable HTTP transport after start() returns
and reports ready; createHandler(), createFetchHandler() and runStdio() never do.
…ad with a 500
canActivate awaited the class load outside the Express middleware's error
handling and before the Web fetch handler's, so a load that failed escaped as
an unhandled rejection (Express 4) or a thrown fetch handler. The flow now
claims its route, and its run throws the load error, which both adapters
answer with a 500.
Regenerated from main's own build (91531eb): 42 names added by the feature stack, none removed, no kind changed. The merged build exports the same 966 names and kinds under require() and import.
…sures
internalZ made two closures and their contexts per stand-in, which cost more
than the stand-in itself. A stand-in now keeps zod's factory, its namespace and
the arguments (or the parent and method it was chained from) and drops the
arguments once built. The public z's stand-ins make one closure instead of two.
…s built
A stand-in cleared its arguments before building, so a build that threw left
it empty: the next parse built the schema without them (an internalZ.object
whose build threw became z.object() and accepted any object). It now drops
them after a successful build, as the closure was dropped before.
A chained stand-in also kept its parent stand-in, and the parent's built
schema, for as long as it lived. It now drops the parent once built.
main gained JobRunResource and CancelJobTool. They go through ./subsystems
like the other job exports, so the CommonJS build still loads the job
subsystem the first time one of them is read.
Regenerated from main's own build (998ca63): 76 names added, none removed, no kind changed. This branch's CommonJS and ESM builds export exactly the same names and kinds.
…w/tools subpath exports
The published exports map offers @frontmcp/sdk/transport, /job/tools and
/workflow/tools, but the build emitted only their declarations, so require()
threw MODULE_NOT_FOUND and import threw ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND.
The build now writes each subpath's require and import files as a re-export
of the package root, with the names its source barrel exports, so a subpath
hands back the root's own classes from whichever root build the importer
resolves, and never a second copy of the SDK. The root entry exports the
seven values only ./transport had: the recreateable and SSE transports and
the event stores, which the CommonJS build loads on first read, and
buildScopedServerOptions.
…th's re-export
build-subpath-reexports read a barrel's export names without bundling it, so
esbuild could not tell a type re-exported with a plain export { } from a
value. The type was written into the subpath's files: importing the subpath
then failed with "does not provide an export named", and require() gave
undefined for it. The script now bundles the barrel with its packages
external and reads the names from the bundled code, which keeps only values;
a local export * is read the same way, and only an export * from another
package fails the build. Adds scripts/build-subpath-reexports.test.mjs.
…ation consumer
No dts-consumer fixture imported @frontmcp/sdk/transport, /job/tools or
/workflow/tools, or the seven values the root now exports for them, so a
broken types target or a root export that types as something else went
unnoticed. subpath-exports-must-compile.ts compiles them under nodenext with
skipLibCheck off, checks each subpath value against the root's type and that
createEventStore is not any. It fails on the base, where the root lacks the
seven values.
main now holds #1016 and #1021, which this branch already had. The four conflicting files are ones #1016 added and this branch extends; main's copies equal this branch's base, so this branch's side is taken.
The SDK root now exports transport and event-store APIs. The build generates CommonJS and ESM runtime files for eligible package subpaths. Tests cover runtime exports, browser bundle inputs, lazy initialization, and declaration compatibility.

Root exports and lazy loading libs/sdk/src/index.ts, libs/sdk/src/subsystems.ts, libs/sdk/src/lazy-subsystems.ts, libs/sdk/src/transport/event-stores/index.ts, libs/skills/catalog/...
The SDK root and subsystem barrels export transport and event-store APIs. Lazy CommonJS exports load the related modules when read. Examples and documentation describe SDK import paths.
The SDK build runs a script that discovers named exports from development entries and generates root re-exports for CommonJS and ESM. Tests cover named and type-only exports, local export * entries, and rejection of external export * entries.

On the review's follow-up comment about sdk-subpath-exports.e2e.spec.ts (assert an exact list of runtime names per subpath):
Not changing this. The names a subpath re-exports aren't kept in a list anywhere. scripts/build-subpath-reexports.mjs reads them from the subpath's own source barrel (the development entry of the exports map) on every build. Each layer is covered:
scripts/build-subpath-reexports.test.mjs asserts the exact names the script writes: the barrel's values, local export * expanded, and types without export type left out.
libs/sdk/src/__tests__/subpath-exports.spec.ts asserts that every value of the transport, job/tools and workflow/tools barrels is the root entry's own value.
The e2e asserts that the built files load under require and import, export the same names under both, and hand back the root's values.
A hard-coded list in the e2e would be a second copy of each barrel. It would have to change with every export added to transport or the tool barrels, without catching anything the tests above miss.

What and why
@frontmcp/sdk's publishedexportsmap offers three subpaths,./transport,./job/toolsand./workflow/tools, but the build only ever emitted their.d.tsfiles. None of theirrequireorimporttargets (transport/index.js,esm/transport/index.mjs,job/tools/index.js,esm/job/tools/index.mjs,workflow/tools/index.js,esm/workflow/tools/index.mjs) is in any published version (checked 0.4.0, 0.8.0, 1.0.0, 1.5.0 and 1.10.16). Type imports worked, butrequire('@frontmcp/sdk/job/tools')threwMODULE_NOT_FOUNDandimportthrewERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND. The skills catalog'screate-job.mdtold users to import from these subpaths. The fix:
buildtarget now runsscripts/build-subpath-reexports.mjs libs/sdk. For each subpath inlibs/sdk/package.jsonthat has adevelopmentsource, the script bundles that source barrel with esbuild, its packages kept external, and reads the names of the values the bundle exports, so a type the barrel re-exports withoutexport typestays out of the subpath. It then writes the subpath'srequireandimportfiles asexport { … } from '@frontmcp/sdk', keeping@frontmcp/sdkexternal. A subpath therefore hands back the root's own classes,require('@frontmcp/sdk/job/tools').ExecuteJobTool === require('@frontmcp/sdk').ExecuteJobTool, and never bundles a second copy of the SDK (a secondToolContext, token or registry would break DI andinstanceof). The names come from the barrel, so a value added to a barrel reaches its subpath without another change. A barrel that re-exports another package withexport *fails the build, because its names can't be read.browsercondition. The re-export names the package, not a file, so it resolves to whichever root build the importer gets:index.jsunderrequire,esm/index.mjsunderimport, and the browser build in a browser bundle. A browser app that imports a subpath and the root gets one copy of the SDK. The first six go through./subsystems, so the CommonJS build loads each of them the first time it is read (lazy-subsystems.ts). Loading the SDK underrequire()still initializes the same 541 modules, and the Streamable HTTP transport, with@hono/node-serverand undici, still loads only once a server listens or the export is read. Underimport, the SDK loads the same 609 files as before and initializes 9 more of its own modules at load (614 → 623): the transports' and event stores' class definitions, which the ESM build already bundled forimport(). In the browser builds the root entry now imports those modules statically: an app's bundler drops them unless the app uses them, so the bundles below don't change, anddist/browser/index.cjsinitializes 8 more modules at load.buildScopedServerOptionswas already initialized at load in every build.job/toolsandworkflow/toolsfiles read the root's lazy getters, so requiring a subpath sets up nothing until one of its classes is read, as with the root.User-facing change
