feat(sdk, utils, auth): a shared local server that several stdio sessions attach to, after it proves its identity - #1019
Proposal item 2.1 (a): a shared local server that the stdio sessions of a server on one machine attach to.
An MCP client starts a stdio server per session, so three editor windows run three copies of a server, each with its
own caches, connections and background work. FrontMcpInstance.runShared(config, { key }) turns each of those
processes into a thin stdio session of one server process per key: the first session finds no server and starts
it, every later one attaches to it. This PR is the attach half; upgrading an older server, the version handshake,
the embedded fallback and the exit conditions are the next PR (2.1 b).
What this PR changes:
The frontmcp dev --stdio bridge core moves to @frontmcp/utils (libs/utils/src/stdio-bridge/): the
newline-delimited JSON-RPC framer, the upstream MCP clients (streamable HTTP and the --serve IPC pipe), the state
machine that buffers a client's requests while its server starts, the initialize replay and the list_changed
notifications after it, and the dev_* JSON-RPC error codes. Their specs move with them unchanged. The CLI imports
them from there; its child supervisor, watcher and file logger stay in the CLI. The HTTP upstream gains two options, headers (sent with every request) and fetch (sends the requests, such as one that reaches a Unix socket), and an endSession() that DELETEs the MCP session the server issued. frontmcp dev --stdio behaves as before (its
compiled-CLI e2e passes unchanged).
FrontMcpInstance.runShared(configOrClass, { key, transport? }) (libs/sdk/src/shared/, loaded with a dynamic
import so a server that doesn't call it, and the browser bundle, never load it):
In a session: it redirects the console to stderr, bridges stdin/stdout to the key's server, and buffers the
client's frames until the server proved its identity. When stdin ends or the client goes away, the session ends its
MCP session on the server (DELETE) and exits 0; the server keeps running.
One start per key. A session reads the record ~/.frontmcp/shared/<key>/server.json (under FRONTMCP_HOME
when set) and challenges the endpoint it names. When no server proves its identity, it takes the key's start
lock: a lease in ~/.frontmcp/shared/<key>/start-lock.sqlite through createStorage() (M02's SQLite store, the
compare-and-set M12's leases use), set only when absent with a 10 s TTL that its holder renews while it waits. It
checks once more, then runs its own entry again (process.execPath, execArgv, argv), detached, with FRONTMCP_SHARED_SERVE=<key> and FRONTMCP_SHARED_START_LOCK=<holder>, and waits for that server. The server
keeps renewing that lease until it has written its record, so a session that dies while its server is slow to
start doesn't let a second session start a second server; a server that finds the lease taken by another session
(both it and its launcher stalled past the TTL) stops without writing its record, and its launcher waits for the
other session's server. Sessions started together wait for the one server; when a launcher and its server both
die, the lease lapses and another session takes it over. A session gives up after 60 s, or as soon as the server it
started exits while it still holds the lease (SharedServerStartError). A session whose server runs never opens
the SQLite file.
The server (the process that gets FRONTMCP_SHARED_SERVE=<key>, which it removes from its own environment)
generates a fresh 32-byte secret, listens, and only then writes the record (transport, port, MCP path, pid,
secret) owner-only and in one step (wx to a temporary file, then rename). It serves the config through the
normal HTTP flows (http:request, session:verify, the MCP handlers, every hook), with auth replaced by the
existing static-token mode for the token derived from the secret, and http replaced by the shared endpoint. An
app with auth of its own (an @App({ auth }) with an endpoint of its own, through splitByApp or standalone)
would keep that auth and answer without the token, so the server refuses to start when any scope's auth is not
that token. On SIGTERM or SIGINT it removes the record (only when it still names its pid) and shuts down
gracefully.
Transport.'unix' (the default, except on Windows): an owner-only socket in the key's folder, through bug
PR 05's guard (owner-only umask, 0600 checked, refused unsafe folders, a stale socket removed, a live one refused). 'http': loopback HTTP on 127.0.0.1 and a free port, with an explicit allow-list so no env var can widen it: the
loopback names as Host (DNS rebinding), no CORS, and every request that carries an Origin refused (stricter
than bug PR 05's derived list, since the shared server serves no page). A socket path longer than a socket address
holds (103 bytes) is refused up front instead of failing with a bare EINVAL.
Server identity proof (libs/auth/src/shared-server/): before it sends anything else, a session sends a fresh
random 32-byte nonce to POST /.well-known/frontmcp-shared-server, a new hookable flow, shared:identify
(IP filter, global rate limit, then the proof). The server answers with HMAC-SHA256(proofKey, ["frontmcp shared server identity v1", endpoint, nonce]), where the endpoint is its own (unix:<socket path> or http://127.0.0.1:<port>) and proofKey is HKDF-derived from the secret, with the bearer token derived under
another label, so neither reveals the other. The session compares it in constant time (timingSafeEqual) and only
then sends the token (an answer that doesn't state its length, or is longer than 1 KiB, is refused unread), as Authorization: Bearer on each MCP request; static mode compares that in constant time
too. A proof for another nonce (replayed), made with an earlier server's key (stale) or bound to another endpoint
is refused. Over loopback HTTP the session challenges the server again before every request, so a process that
takes the port of a server that stopped, while sessions are attached, gets no request and no token either
(SharedServerIdentityError; the client sees dev_server_unreachable). Over the socket it doesn't need to: no
other user can reach it.
File safety. The key's folder is created 0700; a folder that the group or others can write to, that belongs
to another user, or one above it that does (unless sticky), is refused with UnsafeSharedServerDirectoryError
(M12's findReplaceableDirectory() walk). The record and the lock file are 0600; a record that is a link,
belongs to another user or that the group or others can read is refused. The secret and the token are never
logged, passed in an argument or in the environment; the proof key sits in a private field of the provider the
flow reads.
Options are checked by a Zod schema; a mistake rejects with InvalidSharedServerOptionsError before anything
starts. A key is lowercase and starts and ends with a letter or digit, and isn't a Windows device name: on a
case-insensitive file system (macOS, Windows) Notes and notes would share one folder, and Windows drops a
trailing dot.
runStdio()'s console redirect moves to a helper both entry points use (no behavior change).
Threat model (self security review)
Same-user processes can read the record and the secret, as they can read everything of this user; the shared
server trusts them as any stdio server does. A same-user process squatting the socket path makes the next server
fail (SocketInUseError), never receive a token: it can't answer the challenge.
Other local users can't reach the Unix socket (owner-only folder and socket). Over loopback HTTP they can
connect: every MCP request needs the 256-bit token; the identity endpoint answers anyone, but only for the server's
own endpoint and a nonce of the caller's choice, so its answers are useless against a session's fresh nonce, and
the key dies with the server. A process that takes the port before a session attaches, or after the server stopped
while sessions are attached, never gets a request or the token (unit tests and e2e). A process that takes the port
between the probe and the listen makes the server fail to start; it gets nothing. They can't plant or replace the
record or the lock (folder checks), and can't read them.
Browsers on the same machine can't reach the socket. Over loopback HTTP, a rebound host fails the Host check,
a cross-site request fails the Origin check (403, the identity endpoint included), there is no CORS to read an
answer, and nothing works without the token.
A stale socket file a crashed server left: the next session finds nothing that proves itself, starts a server,
and the server's guard removes the stale socket (a live one is refused, never removed).
The record is the root of trust. A proof shows a server holds the record's secret, not that the record is the
user's: the folder, owner and mode checks are what keep another user from planting one. On Windows they are not
made, so the files rely on the profile folder's ACL; a FRONTMCP_HOME outside the profile is the user's choice.
Apps with their own auth would be served without the token (a splitByApp server's first app is the scope the
sessions reach): refused at start (found by the second review; before, any local user could call such an app over
loopback HTTP).
Endpoints that need no token on any FrontMCP server still answer other users over loopback HTTP: the health
routes (name, version, counts) and routes a plugin adds. The OAuth protected-resource document names no secret.
The instant between a challenge and its request: a process that binds the port right then could receive that one
request and its token; the token is useless, since it dies with the server, and the next request's challenge fails.
A squatter that floods its answer to a challenge is refused unread, instead of filling the session's memory.
Out of scope: denial of service by another local user on loopback HTTP (they can hold the identity endpoint busy
or take a probed port), and root.
Different from the plan, and why:
The bridge core moved to @frontmcp/utils, not libs/sdk/src/shared/. The CLI (frontmcp on npm) depends on @frontmcp/utils but not on @frontmcp/sdk; making it import the SDK would add the whole SDK and its dependencies
to every npx frontmcp install and pin the CLI to one SDK version. Both packages already share the process kit
(M03) through utils the same way. The shared server's own code (lock, transport, proof, runShared) is in libs/sdk/src/shared/, and the identity primitives are in libs/auth (auth code lives there).
runShared({ key, transport }) lands here, with attachBudgetMs, replaceOlder and the version handshake
left to 2.1 (b): without an entry point, no stdio session could attach, and the e2e couldn't run.
The same handshake for both transports, and a token on the socket too: one protocol to reason about, and the
socket's file mode stays a second line rather than the only one.
Per-request identity over loopback HTTP, beyond the brief: proving identity only at attach left the rest of a
session open to a process that takes the port after the server stops.
DELETE on session end, beyond the brief: a long-running shared server would otherwise keep every finished
session's transport.
A stricter Origin rule than the derived loopback list: every Origin is refused.
Left open: a server that stops leaves its sessions answering dev_server_unreachable until their clients restart
them (reconnect and initialize replay are 2.1 b); the server keeps running until SIGTERM/SIGINT (idle and
removed-checkout exit are 2.1 b); a client on MCP 2026-07-28 isn't served yet, since the HTTP upstream doesn't send
the mirrored headers (as frontmcp dev --stdio without --serve); the server runs with the environment, working
folder and Node flags of the session that started it (an inspector flag too), so two client configs that pass
different credentials in env need different keys.
User-facing change
What changed:
New FrontMcpInstance.runShared(configOrClass, { key, transport? }) and types SharedServerOptions, SharedServerTransport and SharedIdentifyFlow (the shared:identify flow) from @frontmcp/sdk.
New errors from @frontmcp/sdk: InvalidSharedServerOptionsError (INVALID_SHARED_SERVER_OPTIONS), for example runShared() options are invalid: key: key must be 1 to 64 lowercase letters, digits, ".", "_" or "-", starting and ending with a letter or digit, … key: key can't be a device name Windows reserves (con, prn, aux, nul, com0-9 and lpt0-9), … transport: transport must be 'unix' or 'http', … key: key is required, Unrecognized key: "…", … transport: a Unix socket can't be kept owner-only on Windows; use transport 'http', … transport: the socket path <path> is longer than 103 bytes; use a shorter key or FRONTMCP_HOME, or transport 'http'; UnsafeSharedServerDirectoryError (UNSAFE_SHARED_SERVER_DIRECTORY): Refusing to keep the shared server's files under <path> (mode <mode>): <reason>. Set FRONTMCP_HOME to a folder only you can write to.,
with the reasons the group or others can write to it, it belongs to another user (uid <uid>), it is not a regular file and the group or others can read it; SharedServerStartError
(SHARED_SERVER_START_FAILED): The shared server "<key>" did not start: <reason> (it exited with code <n>, it exited with <signal>, it could not be started (<message>), no server proved its identity within 60000 ms, another session is starting it, app "<id>" has auth of its own (mode <mode>), which the shared server's token would not guard; remove auth from its @App, or serve it without runShared()); SharedServerIdentityError
(SHARED_SERVER_IDENTITY_REFUSED): The process at <endpoint> did not prove it is the shared server.
New stderr lines from a session: [frontmcp shared] warn the process at <endpoint> did not prove it is the shared server "<key>"; it was not sent the token
and [frontmcp shared] error attach-failed {"error":"…"}; the requests a session held when it can't attach are
answered with dev_reload_deadline (-32097), the reason in error.data.error.
New endpoint on a shared server only: POST /.well-known/frontmcp-shared-server ({ nonce } → { proof }, 400
for a malformed nonce).
New files: ~/.frontmcp/shared/<key>/ (0700) with server.json, server.sock and start-lock.sqlite
(0600). New env vars FRONTMCP_SHARED_SERVE=<key> and FRONTMCP_SHARED_START_LOCK=<holder>, set on the server
process a session starts.
@frontmcp/utils now exports the stdio bridge: createStdioFramer, createBridgeStateMachine, createHttpUpstream (new headers, fetch and endSession()), createPipeUpstream, listChangedNotifications, makeDevError, the DEV_* codes and their types. @frontmcp/auth exports the
identity primitives: createSharedServerSecret, createSharedServerNonce, isSharedServerNonce, deriveSharedServerKeys, proveSharedServerIdentity, verifySharedServerIdentity, SharedServerKeys.
Before → after:
Several stdio sessions of one server on a machine: one process each → with runShared(), one process per key that
every session attaches to, started by the first.
frontmcp dev --stdio: unchanged.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the MCP clients page (/reference/deployment/mcp-clients: a shared
local server), the SDK FrontMcpInstance reference (runShared), the errors reference (the four new errors), and
probably a new page for the shared local server.
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-deployment: new references/shared-local-server.md (when to use,
setup, options and their validation messages, how attach / start / serve / bridge work, files and security, errors,
limits, troubleshooting) with its skills-manifest.json row; SKILL.md (description and routing row; the manifest
description matches); references/mcp-client-integration.md (transport row, and a pointer from "one client per
process").
Tests
Unit, @frontmcp/sdk (libs/sdk/src/shared/__tests__/ and stdio-console.spec.ts, 94 pass; the new code at
96% statements, 88% branches and 99% lines):
shared-handshake.spec.ts: a good server verifies over loopback HTTP and over a Unix socket; each challenge has a
fresh nonce; a squatter answering garbage, a replayed proof, a stale key's proof, a proof for another endpoint, or
an error is refused; an answer of 64 MiB, with or without a length, is refused before the squatter sent it all; an endpoint nothing listens on is unreachable; no challenge carries a credential or anything
but the nonce.
ensure-shared-server.spec.ts (real files, real handshake, a memory lock store): it attaches to a running server
without opening the lock; five launchers that find none start one server; a squatter on the recorded endpoint
gets only challenges, never the token, and the launcher starts its own server; over loopback HTTP a process that
takes the port of a server that stopped gets no request (SharedServerIdentityError); over a socket requests
aren't re-challenged; a record of the other transport is ignored; a server that exits or none in time fails with SharedServerStartError; the lock is released once attached; the launcher passes the holder of the lock it
holds to the server it starts; a launcher whose lock another took, and whose server stopped, waits for the other's
server.
start-lock.spec.ts: one holder per key until released; a holder that stops renewing loses it after its TTL; the
owner-only SQLite file, opened twice, lets one acquire; a server keeps its launcher's lock past the TTL until it
releases it; a server whose lock another launcher took is told so, even once that one let go.
shared-files.spec.ts: the paths, the 0700 folder, folders of mode 0777 / 0770 refused, the socket path
limit, the 0600 record written in one step and replaced, a missing or corrupt record read as none, a record
others can read or that is a link refused, the record removed only by its writer.
shared-session.spec.ts (a real server and a session in one process, both transports): a session reaches a tool
through the server's flows; a session that finds no server starts it once and attaches; it answers held requests
and fails when the server it started exits; files and socket owner-only, record removed on close; another
process on the socket makes the server fail and release; a server that can't write its record shuts down; a
server refuses to start when the app it serves (splitByApp) or a standalone app has auth of its own; a server
keeps its launcher's lock while it starts and releases it with its record written, writes no record when another
launcher took the lock, and doesn't start while another launcher starts one; over
loopback HTTP: 401 without or with a wrong token,
the proof verifies for its own endpoint and 400 for a bad nonce, 403 for any Origin (identity endpoint
included) and a non-loopback Host, nothing answers on a non-loopback address, the session DELETEs its MCP
session on stop, and neither the secret nor the token appears in stdout, stderr, the console or the log files at
verbose level.
run-shared.spec.ts, spawn-shared-server.spec.ts, unix-socket-fetch.spec.ts, shared-server.options.spec.ts, front-mcp/__tests__/stdio-console.spec.ts: dispatch by FRONTMCP_SHARED_SERVE (and the removal of it and of FRONTMCP_SHARED_START_LOCK), invalid options rejected before any file exists, the detached re-run of the entry
with the lock holder, the socket fetch (query, headers, streamed body, 204, abort, no listener), every validation
message (traversal, absolute, NUL, non-ASCII, too long, uppercase, trailing dot, Windows device names), the
console redirect.
Unit, @frontmcp/auth (shared-server-identity.spec.ts, 10 pass): fresh secrets and nonces, the derived keys,
malformed secrets refused, a proof verified only for its key, endpoint and nonce (replay, stale key, other endpoint,
garbage and shifted inputs refused).
Unit, @frontmcp/utils (stdio-bridge/__tests__, 45 pass): the moved framer, state machine, upstream and error
specs unchanged, plus the headers / fetch options and endSession().
E2E, new apps/e2e/demo-e2e-shared-server (5 pass, about 35 s): two stdio sessions started together share one
server pid, over the Unix socket and over loopback HTTP, with the folder 0700, the record and socket 0600; the
server outlives the first session; neither secret nor token in any log. A squatter that binds the port of a SIGKILLed
server gets neither a request from the session still attached (it answers dev_server_unreachable) nor the token
from a new session, which starts a server of its own: the squatter saw only identity challenges. A session SIGKILLed
while its server takes 14 s to start, past the lock's 10 s TTL: the next session attaches to that server and no
second one starts. A config with a standalone app that has auth of its own: the server doesn't start, the session
answers dev_reload_deadline, and there is no record. Checked red first: runShared didn't exist; the last two
failed against the code before the second review (a second server started; the server served).
E2E, demo-e2e-cli-exec (cli-dev-stdio.e2e.spec.ts, 8 pass, against the compiled CLI), demo-e2e-stdio-transport
(30 pass; its stdio helper gained pid and a timeout), demo-e2e-dts-consumer (25 pass, new shared-server-must-compile.ts: runShared(), the options, the errors, SharedIdentifyFlow, and an invalid
transport and a missing key rejected), demo-e2e-bundle-size (10 pass; a new shared local server guard checks
no shared/ module reaches the browser bundle).
Second review (security):
An app with auth of its own escaped the token: with splitByApp, the scope sessions reach is the first app's,
with that app's auth, so auth: { mode: 'public' } answered initialize with 200 and no token over loopback HTTP;
a standalone app did the same on its own path. The server now refuses to start unless every scope's auth is the
shared token.
Keys that differ only in case share one folder on a case-insensitive file system (checked on this APFS volume: a
session of Spec attached to the server of spec), while their start locks differ; Windows also drops a trailing
dot and maps device names. Keys are now lowercase, end with a letter or digit, and aren't device names.
A session that died while its server was slow to start let the lease lapse, and the next session started a second
server (the case the first review left open). The server now keeps renewing its launcher's lease until it has
written its record, a server that lost it for good writes none, and a launcher that lost it waits for the other's
server.
The answer to a challenge was read whole: a process on the recorded port could stream gigabytes in the 5 s window
and exhaust a new session's memory, instead of the session starting its own server. It is now refused unread
without a length or above 1 KiB.
Checked and not changed: the token derivation (separate HKDF labels for the proof key and the token, a fresh
secret per start, HMAC over a JSON array of label, endpoint and nonce, timingSafeEqual, static auth comparing
SHA-256 digests); no downgrade path (no proof, no token); a proof relayed from another server fails the endpoint
binding; the Host check is exact (localhost. and other ports refused, [::1] unreachable on a 127.0.0.1
bind); a browser POST always carries Origin (including null), which is refused before any route, and
nothing but the token authorizes an MCP request; an explicit bindAddress wins over FRONTMCP_BIND_ADDRESS; the
spawn passes an argument array (no shell), with stdio: 'ignore' and no secret in arguments or environment; fetch.forwardCallerTokenTo doesn't forward the token (a static session carries an empty one); the call recorder
stores no headers and the request log only the auth scheme; the bridge in @frontmcp/utils has only type
imports from node:; a cancel() after a squatter reset its connection resolves (no failure to guard).
Regression: the full @frontmcp/sdk (615 suites, 8011 tests), @frontmcp/utils (75 suites, 2071), @frontmcp/auth (99 suites, 2820), frontmcp CLI (121 suites, 2059) and skills (249) suites pass.
Checks:nx lint for sdk, auth, utils, cli and skills (no warning in the changed files); tsc --noEmit over
the changed sources and specs and the e2e app; nx build of utils, auth, sdk and cli; prettier; scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs.
Bundle size
runShared's option schema and error classes reach the browser bundle; the shared-server runtime stays out (a guard in demo-e2e-bundle-size checks it). Measured against #1018's head (bcf6974, after its review fixes): create() + one tool grows by 336 bytes minified (1,331,979 → 1,332,315; +161 gzipped) and create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool by 336 (1,339,158 → 1,339,494; +141 gzipped). The two browser budgets move up from #1018's by exactly that, to 1,333,269 and 1,340,136 (2e390cc).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added FrontMcpInstance.runShared() to let multiple stdio sessions on one machine connect to a shared server using Unix sockets or loopback HTTP.
Shared servers verify their identity before requests are sent, and require token authentication for HTTP sessions.
Console output is routed to stderr during stdio operation to keep stdout available for protocol messages.
Documentation
Added setup, transport, security, and troubleshooting guidance for shared local servers.
…other key
A case-insensitive file system (macOS, Windows) gave Spec and spec one folder
while their start locks differed, so a session of one key attached to the
server of the other; Windows also drops a trailing dot and maps device names.
A key is now lowercase, starts and ends with a letter or digit, and is not a
Windows device name.
…lenge unread
The answer was read whole, so a process on a recorded port could stream
gigabytes within the challenge timeout and exhaust the memory of a session
instead of letting it start its own server. An answer without a length, or
longer than 1 KiB, is now refused before its body is read.
…en, and refuse apps with auth of their own
An app with auth of its own kept it on the shared server: with splitByApp the
scope sessions reach is the first app's, so auth { mode: 'public' } answered
without the token over loopback HTTP, as did a standalone app on its own
path. The server now refuses to start unless the shared token guards every
scope.
A session that died while its server was slow to start let the start lease
lapse, and the next session started a second server. The session now hands
the holder of its lease to the server (FRONTMCP_SHARED_START_LOCK), which
renews it until its record is written; a server that lost it for good writes
no record, and a launcher that lost it waits for the other session's server.
The shared local server reference in the skills catalog describes both, the
stricter keys and the bounded challenge answer.
… of #1018
runShared's option schema and errors reach the browser bundle (the shared server itself stays out): create() + one tool grows by 320 bytes minified and create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool by 321 over #1018's head. The two budgets move up by exactly that.

The SDK adds endpoint verification, protected server records, Unix-socket fetch, and start-lock handling. Tests cover identity challenges, filesystem checks, socket requests, and lock ownership.
Server startup and launch coordination libs/sdk/src/shared/shared-serve.ts, libs/sdk/src/shared/ensure-shared-server.ts, libs/sdk/src/shared/__tests__/*
The SDK adds server startup and detached process coordination. The server validates the start lock, configures its transport and authentication, and writes its record. Callers verify an existing endpoint or coordinate a new server launch.
Shared-session entry point and stdio bridge libs/sdk/src/front-mcp/*, libs/sdk/src/shared/*, libs/utils/src/stdio-bridge/*, libs/utils/src/index.ts, libs/cli/src/commands/dev/bridge/*
FrontMcpInstance.runShared selects the serving or attachment path. The SDK bridges stdio sessions to the shared server. Utilities exports the bridge APIs and HTTP session cleanup, and CLI imports use those exports.
E2E and declaration validation apps/e2e/demo-e2e-shared-server/*, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/*, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-stdio-transport/e2e/helpers/stdio-json-rpc.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/*
The new E2E project covers shared sessions over both transports, startup behavior, and stale endpoints. Declaration tests, stdio helper timeouts, and browser bundle checks are updated.
agentfront/frontmcp#950: This change dynamically imports the shared-server runtime and updates browser bundle checks to include SDK shared/ modules.

The title names the main change: a shared local server that several stdio sessions attach to after proving identity. It uses the feat(sdk, utils, auth) prefix. The changeset matches it: runShared, identity proof in libs/auth, and the bridge move to utils. The title is long at 111 characters, but it stays related and specific.

Reject redirects on requests that carry options.headers.
options.headers can now carry a bearer token. The POST at Line 104 and the DELETE at Line 191 use the default redirect: 'follow'. A redirect from the endpoint would forward the request, and possibly the credential, to a destination that nobody checked.
Fetch implementations normally strip Authorization on cross-origin redirects. This helper is now a public export of @frontmcp/utils, so it should not depend on that behavior. Set redirect: 'error' on both calls. An MCP endpoint does not redirect, so this changes nothing in normal use.

Review comment at @libs/utils/src/stdio-bridge/upstream-client.ts at line 104:
Update both the POST and DELETE fetch calls in the upstream-client flow to
reject redirects, using the fetch redirect mode that prevents credential-bearing
requests from being forwarded; preserve the existing request methods, headers,
and behavior when no redirect occurs.

…started shared server down, and refuse redirects
runShared() ran during schema extraction (FRONTMCP_SCHEMA_EXTRACT, as
frontmcp build sets it) while bootstrap(), runStdio() and runUnixSocket()
do not, so a build could attach to stdio and start a detached shared server.
It now returns at once, as they do.
startSharedServer() looked the scope up and registered the identify flow
outside the try that shuts the instance down on failure, so a failure there
left the instance and its handles running. Both steps are now inside it.
The stdio bridge's upstream client sends a bearer token in its headers; its
POST and DELETE now refuse a redirect instead of following it.
The shared-server docs say every session of a key needs the same transport,
and that the port-taking window can expose that one request's payload. The
real-server shared-session spec gets a 20 s timeout: it timed out in CI at
the 5 s default.
Answer to the review-body finding of the review on 9a5ce6e:
Reject redirects on requests that carry options.headers (libs/utils/src/stdio-bridge/upstream-client.ts): fixed in 71abeea. The upstream client's POST and its session-ending DELETE now pass redirect: 'error', so the bearer token in options.headers is never sent on to a redirect target, whatever a fetch implementation does with Authorization across origins. Test: "refuses a redirect on every request it sends its headers with, the session end included" in upstream-client.spec.ts (failed before, passes now).
Also in 71abeea: CI on 9a5ce6e timed out "a shared local server › over unix › serves an attached session through its flows" at Jest's 5 s default; that spec starts a real server per test and now has a 20 s timeout.
Local runs on 71abeea (cli built with --skip-nx-cache): sdk 8814, utils 2100, cli 2097, skills 249; e2e shared-server 5, stdio-transport 30, unix-socket (pass), cli-exec 208, bundle-size 12.

…a hookable http:route flow, with loopback-token sign-in (#1020)
* feat(sdk,auth,plugin-dashboard): serve @HttpRoute pages through a hookable http:route flow, with people auth and SSE from resource topics
@HttpRoute classes listed in @app({ routes }) run through a new http:route flow on
the Express host and the fetch handler alike: the IP filter, the global rate limit,
a same-origin check on POST, PUT, PATCH and DELETE, people auth, then handle()
with the app's providers, the ones its tools get. An SSE route sends handle()'s
view at once and after each burst of publishes on its resource-store topics, with
a heartbeat, and ends when the client leaves or the server shuts down.
http.auth.people: 'loopback-token' (libs/auth) prints a token once at startup; the
token buys single-use sign-in codes with a short TTL, and a code posted from the
server's own page buys an HttpOnly, SameSite=Strict, Path-scoped session cookie.
Tokens, codes and sessions are compared in constant time, and bad ones lock a
client out.
The dashboard page is now DashboardPageRoute, so it is served on every adapter and
behind throttle.ipFilter, with its options unchanged.
* fix(sdk, auth): keep the route and people schemas out of the browser bundle, check http.auth.people at boot, and type-check @HttpRoute in the dts consumer
The @HttpRoute metadata schema now lives with the decorator, and the people auth
schema is built on first use, so a browser bundle that declares neither carries
neither. http.auth.people is parsed when the server builds its routes and fails
with InvalidPeopleAuthOptionsError. The bundle check names the http-route
modules as server-only.
* docs(skills): add create-http-route and document http.auth.people, the dashboard page route and @HttpRoute in the decorators guide
Also: build the route table from the scope in the server-only helper, check that
a listed route is an @HttpRoute class at boot, and test a hook on the http:route
flow, a tool that hands out sign-in codes, and the sign-in lockout over HTTP.
* test(sdk,plugin-dashboard): check HttpRouteHook in the typed hook fixture, type the dashboard page spec, and export the route flow's state schema
* refactor(sdk): send any http output but next and consumed as a route's response, and test the Secure session cookie over https
* fix(sdk): count X-Forwarded-Host as the server's own host in the same-origin check only behind a trusted proxy
A page can send X-Forwarded-Host itself once permissive CORS lets its preflight
through, so naming its own host there passed a cross-site mutation. The route's
same-origin check now reads it only with FRONTMCP_TRUST_PROXY, as the issuer and
discovery URLs do. Also: the dashboard README lists the page route.
* fix(sdk): wait for a full socket and end an sse output whose client already left
The Node writer wrote every chunk of an sse output at once, so a reader that stopped
reading made the server buffer each view, and a client that left before the response
was written was never noticed: its stream, subscription and heartbeat ran on. It now
takes the next chunk only once the socket drains, and ends the iterator at once when
the response is already destroyed.
* fix(sdk): end a people SSE stream with its session, and keep route claims the same on both adapters
- An SSE stream on a people route asks for the session before each view and heartbeat,
and ends once it expired or was ended; it used to run on after sign-out.
- The fetch handler tries the scopes' routes in the order the Express host mounts them,
so a path that routes of two scopes serve goes to the same route on both adapters.
- An SSE route on the MCP path fails startup: an EventSource always asks for
text/event-stream, which the MCP endpoint serves there.
- Tests for a code spent by two requests at once, a lockout that a new X-Forwarded-For
does not dodge, a client that leaves before its stream opens, and more Origin cases.
* test(e2e): fit the browser bundle budgets to the web host on top of #1019
@HttpRoute, its option schema and the http:route flow stub reach the browser bundle (SSE, people auth and the route runtime stay out): both measured bundles grow by 608 bytes minified over #1019's head. The two budgets move up by exactly that.
* test(e2e): fit the browser bundle budgets to the web host on top of #1019's new head
Measured against #1019's head, the web host grows create() + one tool and
create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool by 608 bytes each; the budgets move up from
#1019's by exactly that.
* fix(sdk): refuse an @HttpRoute path with Express wildcards or groups, and document route order
The route table matches literal segments and :name parameters only, but a
path such as /files/*path or /board/:id(\d+) was accepted and then never
matched any request. Such a path is now refused where the route is declared,
with a message naming the syntax it takes.
The create-http-route guide lists the SSE route before the parameter route
it would otherwise be shadowed by, and says the first route that matches, in
the order routes lists them, answers.
#1023)
* feat(sdk): run, upgrade and fall back from a shared local server
A session never attaches to a shared server older than its info.version:
the server's identity proof now covers its version, and a newer session
drains the older server through the new shared:drain flow (token and a
strictly newer version required), starts its own and attaches. Sessions
of the drained server reach the next one, replay the client's initialize
and send list_changed; requests no server took are sent again.
Past attachBudgetMs, when the started server exits, or when it may not
replace an older server (replaceOlder: false), a session runs the server
in its own process with the same flows, announced once on stderr.
The server exits when idle (idleTimeoutMs) or once its checkout folder
is removed, refusing new requests as exiting, removing its record and
socket, and letting the requests in flight finish.
The stdio bridge state machine gains onUpstreamLost() and requeue(),
keeps the frames a drain had not sent when it leaves Ready, and answers
a failed forward only while it is still in flight.
* fix(sdk): keep a shared server's version to printable ASCII, since it is written to logs
A session's drain request names its version, which the server logs as the reason it exits, and the version a server proves appears in a session's fallback line: a line break in it would forge a log line. Versions, info.version included, are now 1 to 256 printable ASCII characters.
* fix(sdk): shut a half-started shared server down when its scope setup fails
The primary scope lookup and the shared flows' registration ran outside the try that shuts the instance down, so a failure there left the instance running. They now run inside it, as on the parent branch.
* fix(utils): send the frames a stale drain had not sent once the bridge is ready again
A drain that noticed it was stale only after the bridge became Ready again put its unsent frames back in the buffer, which nothing drained until the next reload: those requests went unanswered. A shared session meets this when its server is replaced during a long call. They are now sent through the normal path.
* test(sdk): give the real-server shared specs time, and cover a half-started server's shutdown
The specs that start real servers with their SQLite start lock get a 20 s timeout, as the parent branch gave its own after CI timed out at 5 s. A new case checks the server is shut down when its scope can't take the shared flows.
* docs(skills): fit the shared local server routing row to its table
* fix(sdk, utils): bind a shared server to its info.name, and close the exit races a second review found
- A session attaches to, or drains, only a server whose record names its own info.name: a project that
picked another project's key no longer drains that server and takes over its live sessions; it runs the
server in its own process and says its key is taken.
- A server that goes away while a session replays initialize on it is replaced by the next one, instead of
leaving the session answering dev_reload_deadline for good.
- On the socket, a session starts the next server only once an exiting one no longer answers there, so an
idle, checkout or signal exit with requests in flight doesn't make the next server fail on a held socket.
- runShared() refuses a checkout that is not an existing folder before anything starts.
- watchPath() reports a path as gone only when it is missing, not when a check fails another way.
* docs(skills): describe a shared server's info.name binding, its checkout default and the exit races in the shared local server reference
* test(sdk): keep one copy of the scope-failure shutdown test after merging #1019's
#1019 added the same test with serveShared's earlier three-argument signature; this branch's copy covers it with the options object.
* fix(utils): keep the bridge's frame order when a drain is interrupted after a requeue
When the upstream was lost while a drain forwarded its first frame and that
frame was requeued, the drain put the frames it had not sent yet in front of
it, so after the reconnect the bridge sent 2, 3 and then 1: a
notifications/cancelled could reach the server before the request it
cancels. The unsent frames now go after the frames a requeue put back.

What and why
Proposal item 2.1 (a): a shared local server that the stdio sessions of a server on one machine attach to.
An MCP client starts a stdio server per session, so three editor windows run three copies of a server, each with its
own caches, connections and background work.
FrontMcpInstance.runShared(config, { key })turns each of thoseprocesses into a thin stdio session of one server process per key: the first session finds no server and starts
it, every later one attaches to it. This PR is the attach half; upgrading an older server, the version handshake,
the embedded fallback and the exit conditions are the next PR (2.1 b).
What this PR changes:
frontmcp dev --stdiobridge core moves to@frontmcp/utils(libs/utils/src/stdio-bridge/): thenewline-delimited JSON-RPC framer, the upstream MCP clients (streamable HTTP and the
--serveIPC pipe), the statemachine that buffers a client's requests while its server starts, the
initializereplay and thelist_changednotifications after it, and the
dev_*JSON-RPC error codes. Their specs move with them unchanged. The CLI importsthem from there; its child supervisor, watcher and file logger stay in the CLI. The HTTP upstream gains two options,
headers(sent with every request) andfetch(sends the requests, such as one that reaches a Unix socket), and anendSession()thatDELETEs the MCP session the server issued.frontmcp dev --stdiobehaves as before (itscompiled-CLI e2e passes unchanged).
FrontMcpInstance.runShared(configOrClass, { key, transport? })(libs/sdk/src/shared/, loaded with a dynamicimport so a server that doesn't call it, and the browser bundle, never load it):
client's frames until the server proved its identity. When stdin ends or the client goes away, the session ends its
MCP session on the server (
DELETE) and exits 0; the server keeps running.~/.frontmcp/shared/<key>/server.json(underFRONTMCP_HOMEwhen set) and challenges the endpoint it names. When no server proves its identity, it takes the key's start
lock: a lease in
~/.frontmcp/shared/<key>/start-lock.sqlitethroughcreateStorage()(M02's SQLite store, thecompare-and-set M12's leases use), set only when absent with a 10 s TTL that its holder renews while it waits. It
checks once more, then runs its own entry again (
process.execPath, execArgv, argv), detached, withFRONTMCP_SHARED_SERVE=<key>andFRONTMCP_SHARED_START_LOCK=<holder>, and waits for that server. The serverkeeps renewing that lease until it has written its record, so a session that dies while its server is slow to
start doesn't let a second session start a second server; a server that finds the lease taken by another session
(both it and its launcher stalled past the TTL) stops without writing its record, and its launcher waits for the
other session's server. Sessions started together wait for the one server; when a launcher and its server both
die, the lease lapses and another session takes it over. A session gives up after 60 s, or as soon as the server it
started exits while it still holds the lease (
SharedServerStartError). A session whose server runs never opensthe SQLite file.
FRONTMCP_SHARED_SERVE=<key>, which it removes from its own environment)generates a fresh 32-byte secret, listens, and only then writes the record (transport, port, MCP path, pid,
secret) owner-only and in one step (
wxto a temporary file, thenrename). It serves the config through thenormal HTTP flows (
http:request,session:verify, the MCP handlers, every hook), withauthreplaced by theexisting static-token mode for the token derived from the secret, and
httpreplaced by the shared endpoint. Anapp with
authof its own (an@App({ auth })with an endpoint of its own, throughsplitByApporstandalone)would keep that auth and answer without the token, so the server refuses to start when any scope's auth is not
that token. On SIGTERM or SIGINT it removes the record (only when it still names its pid) and shuts down
gracefully.
'unix'(the default, except on Windows): an owner-only socket in the key's folder, through bugPR 05's guard (owner-only umask,
0600checked, refused unsafe folders, a stale socket removed, a live one refused).'http': loopback HTTP on127.0.0.1and a free port, with an explicit allow-list so no env var can widen it: theloopback names as
Host(DNS rebinding), no CORS, and every request that carries anOriginrefused (stricterthan bug PR 05's derived list, since the shared server serves no page). A socket path longer than a socket address
holds (103 bytes) is refused up front instead of failing with a bare
EINVAL.libs/auth/src/shared-server/): before it sends anything else, a session sends a freshrandom 32-byte nonce to
POST /.well-known/frontmcp-shared-server, a new hookable flow, shared:identify(IP filter, global rate limit, then the proof). The server answers with
HMAC-SHA256(proofKey, ["frontmcp shared server identity v1", endpoint, nonce]), where the endpoint is its own (unix:<socket path>orhttp://127.0.0.1:<port>) andproofKeyis HKDF-derived from the secret, with the bearer token derived underanother label, so neither reveals the other. The session compares it in constant time (
timingSafeEqual) and onlythen sends the token (an answer that doesn't state its length, or is longer than 1 KiB, is refused unread), as
Authorization: Beareron each MCP request; static mode compares that in constant timetoo. A proof for another nonce (replayed), made with an earlier server's key (stale) or bound to another endpoint
is refused. Over loopback HTTP the session challenges the server again before every request, so a process that
takes the port of a server that stopped, while sessions are attached, gets no request and no token either
(
SharedServerIdentityError; the client seesdev_server_unreachable). Over the socket it doesn't need to: noother user can reach it.
0700; a folder that the group or others can write to, that belongsto another user, or one above it that does (unless sticky), is refused with
UnsafeSharedServerDirectoryError(M12's
findReplaceableDirectory()walk). The record and the lock file are0600; a record that is a link, belongs to another user or that the group or others can read is refused. The secret and the token are never
logged, passed in an argument or in the environment; the proof key sits in a private field of the provider the
flow reads.
InvalidSharedServerOptionsErrorbefore anythingstarts. A key is lowercase and starts and ends with a letter or digit, and isn't a Windows device name: on a
case-insensitive file system (macOS, Windows)

runStdio()'s console redirect moves to a helper both entry points use (no behavior change).Threat model (self security review)
server trusts them as any stdio server does. A same-user process squatting the socket path makes the next server
fail (
SocketInUseError), never receive a token: it can't answer the challenge.connect: every MCP request needs the 256-bit token; the identity endpoint answers anyone, but only for the server's
own endpoint and a nonce of the caller's choice, so its answers are useless against a session's fresh nonce, and
the key dies with the server.

Different from the plan, and why:
@frontmcp/utils, notlibs/sdk/src/shared/. The CLI (frontmcpon npm) depends on@frontmcp/utilsbut not on@frontmcp/sdk; making it import the SDK would add the whole SDK and its dependenciesto every
npx frontmcpinstall and pin the CLI to one SDK version. Both packages already share the process kit(M03) through utils the same way. The shared server's own code (lock, transport, proof,
