What does this PR do?

Corporate networks routinely intercept TLS or answer for api.testsprite.com. Node collapses every one of those failures into TypeError: fetch failed, the CLI retries all of them four times, and then reports a generic UNAVAILABLE. Worse, an intercepting proxy's HTML 403 page was translated through the API error catalog as AUTH_FORBIDDEN, so users were told to rotate a valid API key, and doctor blamed the local-tunnel endpoint.

This PR walks the fetch failed cause chain once and names the actual failure:

  • TLS certificate failures (UNABLE_TO_VERIFY_LEAF_SIGNATURE, SELF_SIGNED_CERT_IN_CHAIN, CERT_HAS_EXPIRED, plus the related cert-family codes) short-circuit on the first attempt, exit 10, and the message names NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS.
  • A proxy 407 also fails on the first attempt, with HTTPS_PROXY guidance.
  • DNS failures, refused or unreachable hosts, timeouts and resets keep the existing four-attempt budget, but the final error carries details.reason and details.cause so JSON consumers and humans can tell them apart.
  • A non-JSON 4xx response that does not echo our x-request-id is reported as "something between this machine and the API answered" (UNAVAILABLE, details.reason: "not_testsprite", plus httpStatus, contentType and the page <title>) instead of being mapped to AUTH_FORBIDDEN, CLIENT_TOO_OLD, etc.
  • doctor prints the same named cause and skips the Local tunnel probe when /me never reached the API, instead of blaming the tunnel endpoint.

JSON error envelopes keep their status-based mapping. 408, 429 and 5xx keep their existing retry and exit-code behavior. This matches the accepted scope in the issue; reading the OS certificate store remains out of scope.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)

Checklist

  • PR targets the main branch.
  • Commits follow Conventional Commits (fix(http): ...).
  • npm run lint and npm run format:check pass for the changed files.
  • npm run typecheck passes.
  • npm test passes and coverage stays at or above the 80% gate.
  • New behavior is covered by unit tests (mock-based; no network or credentials required).
  • No secrets, API keys, internal endpoints, or personal data are included.
  • User-facing changes are reflected in README.md / DOCUMENTATION.md where relevant.

Notes for reviewers

Tests were verified to fail before the fix. On unmodified d61e6df, the new TLS cases retry four times and report generic fetch failed; HTML 402/403/404/426 map to exit 12/3/4/14; and doctor reports "API key rejected". With the fix they fail once with exit 10, name NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, and keep the page title.

Raw before/after evidence on the built CLI:

  • Self-signed TLS endpoint: before 4 attempts / exit 10 / generic fetch failed; after 1 attempt / exit 10 / message names NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. Setting NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS to the test CA gets past TLS.
  • HTML block pages at 402/403/404/426: all exit 10 with details.reason: "not_testsprite", status, content type and page title. The same statuses with a JSON API error envelope still exit 12/3/4/14.
  • Closed port: exit 10, details.reason: "connection_refused", details.cause: "ECONNREFUSED", four attempts preserved.
  • doctor on the TLS endpoint prints the TLS cause and says "Local tunnel ... skipped; the connectivity check did not reach TestSprite".

New tests are in src/lib/http.test.ts and src/commands/doctor.test.ts: TLS codes -> exit 10 / one attempt / NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS; proxy 407 -> one attempt; non-API 4xx -> not_testsprite; echoed x-request-id -> status mapping preserved; JSON 403/429, valid JSON null, and 5xx regressions; doctor TLS and HTML 403.

Full suite and coverage pass locally: npm test (all files, 2 skipped) and npm run test:coverage -> 90.05% statements, 85.04% branches, 83.76% functions, 92.27% lines.

No new dependencies. The tests are mock-based and the diff contains no credentials.

Walkthrough

The HTTP client now classifies transport failures and non-API error responses. The doctor command tracks whether a request reached TestSprite and skips tunnel diagnostics when it did not.

Changes

Corporate Network Diagnostics

Layer / File(s) Summary
Transport failure classification
src/lib/errors.ts, src/lib/transport-failure.ts
TransportError accepts cause-specific remediation and details. Fetch failures are classified by cause. Certificate and proxy-authentication failures are fatal, while recognized DNS and connection failures remain retryable.
HTTP error handling and coverage
src/lib/http.ts, src/lib/http.test.ts, DOCUMENTATION.md
The HTTP client reports eligible non-API responses as UNAVAILABLE with response diagnostics. Tests and documentation cover transport classification, response handling, and preserved API status and retry behavior.
Doctor connectivity and tunnel checks
src/commands/doctor.ts, src/commands/doctor.test.ts
The doctor command tracks whether connectivity reached TestSprite. It reports named transport failures and skips the tunnel check when the API was not reached. Tests cover TLS, unknown transport, and HTML block-page failures.

Explanation

The reviewed changes stay within issue #433. The HTTP classification, transport diagnostics, doctor behavior, documentation, and regression tests directly support the linked issue. No unrelated source or dependency changes are shown.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #433 directly includes an OS certificate-store fallback on supported Node versions. The current code does not call tls.getCACertificates('system') or tls.setDefaultCACertificates. src/lib/transport-failure.ts instead states that Node does not read the OS store and directs users to NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS. The code implements the other #433 requirements, including named transport causes, fatal TLS and proxy handling, non-API 4xx classification, preserved API mappings, and doctor reachability handling.

Resolution

Implement and test the supported-Node OS certificate-store fallback from #433. Keep certificate verification enabled and preserve the stated Node 20 behavior. If this requirement is removed from #433, update the issue before merging.

Stop marking an unclassified TransportError as reachedApi: true.

classifyFetchFailure can return undefined for an unrecognized code such as EHOSTUNREACH. In that case src/lib/http.ts Line 940 throws new TransportError(message, requestId) with empty details. isTransportFailure then returns false, and Line 360 reports reachedApi: true. checkLocalTunnel runs the probe, the probe fails with UNAVAILABLE, and Line 469 prints "not available on this endpoint". The PR intends to remove exactly that diagnosis. The request never produced an HTTP response, so it never reached the API. TransportError from an edge 502/504 is a different case because a response did arrive.

Use the HTTP status as the reachability signal. Every response-derived ApiError has httpStatus, and fetch-rejection TransportErrors do not.

Classify EHOSTUNREACH / ENETUNREACH as named failures.

Line 299 returns undefined for these codes. The caller then throws a generic TransportError with empty details. The final error therefore has no details.reason or details.cause. Linked issue #433 asks for named reasons. VPN and corporate routing failures commonly produce EHOSTUNREACH and ENETUNREACH. Add them as a retryable connection_refused-family reason or as a new host_unreachable reason. A new reason must also be listed in TRANSPORT_FAILURE_REASONS.

Node fetch collapses TLS interception, DNS, closed ports, and proxy authentication into "fetch failed", and the CLI retried all of them before blaming the API. Walk the cause chain and name the real failure.

TLS certificate failures and a proxy 407 now fail on the first attempt with a NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS / HTTPS_PROXY remedy. Non-JSON 4xx pages that do not echo our x-request-id are reported as something between the user and the API instead of being mapped to AUTH_FORBIDDEN, CLIENT_TOO_OLD, or another API verdict.

doctor prints the named cause and skips the tunnel probe when /me never reached the API. JSON API answers, 408/429, and 5xx keep their existing exit codes and retry behavior.

Both findings from the first CodeRabbit pass are addressed in 2301a94:

  • doctor now derives reachedApi from TransportError.httpStatus (edge 408/502/504 responses carry their status), so an unclassified fetch rejection skips the tunnel probe instead of blaming the endpoint. Local validation errors like a malformed key still run the tunnel check and surface the same local error, preserving that existing report.
  • EHOSTUNREACH / ENETUNREACH are now classified as host_unreachable, with details.reason / details.cause populated and the existing retry budget kept. Unit tests cover both codes, plus a doctor test for the unclassified-rejection skip.
