What does this PR do?

Prevent ci init github from writing through symlinked ancestors or workflow files that resolve outside the repository. Refuse with exit code 5 and show the resolved path, while allowing symlinks that stay inside the repository.

Reuse the agent install path guard without changing its strict symlink policy. Check the .bak path used by --force too. No new dependency.

Add real CLI regression tests for external and internal links, dangling links, a symlinked working directory, and POSIX filenames containing a literal backslash.

  • External-link cases failed before the fix; outside files remain unchanged after rejection.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • ci init github now checks that workflow and backup paths resolve within the current repository before writing.
    • External symlink targets and unresolved symlinks are rejected, including when --force is used. Invalid paths fail with exit code 5, and external files remain unchanged.
    • Symlinks and symlinked working directories are supported when their targets remain within the repository.
  • Tests

    • Added end-to-end coverage for symlink handling, external-target protection, and POSIX workflow paths containing literal backslashes.

Walkthrough

The agent command now uses shared target-path inspection. ci init checks workflow and backup paths for repository containment before writing. Tests cover rejected external symlinks and accepted internal symlinks.

Changes

Symlink-safe path handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared target-path inspection
src/lib/target-path.ts, src/commands/agent.ts
The shared helper checks path components, symlinks, and intermediate files. The agent command now uses it instead of its local implementation.
CI workflow containment and validation
src/commands/ci.ts, src/commands/ci.spec.ts, test/e2e/ci-init-symlinks.e2e.test.ts, test/helpers/ci-init-fetch.mjs
ci init checks workflow and forced-backup paths against the repository root before writing. The filesystem seam adds lstat and realpath. End-to-end tests cover external and internal symlinks, dangling ancestors, literal-backslash paths, and symlinked working directories. A fetch fixture supplies the dummy project’s default environment.

Explanation

The shared path helper and the agent.ts delegation support the path-safety objective. The CiFs filesystem seam and the CLI regression tests verify the required behavior. The .bak validation supports existing backup semantics. The fetch fixture supports the new CLI tests. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#527] requires the default ci init github path to reject symlinked ancestors before directory creation or file writes. The shared inspectTargetPath helper permits symlinks when ci supplies its containment callback. The added E2E tests confirm that internal .github and .github/workflows symlinks are accepted. Those paths are still symlinked ancestors, so the unqualified issue requirement is not met. The external-link, dangling-link, .bak, exit-code, and no-write checks are implemented.

Resolution

For the default workflow path, reject every existing symlinked path component before directory creation or file writes. Preserve the required exit code 5 and resolved-path error reporting. Keep intentional custom --path behavior only where the issue permits it.

Use atomic no-follow operations for CI workflow writes.

inspectTargetPath validates the path before the write, but it does not hold the path stable. A concurrent process can replace a validated ancestor with an outside symlink before fs.mkdir, allowing recursive directory creation and the workflow write outside the repository. With --force, replacing the workflow or .bak path after validation also lets the non-exclusive writes follow the symlink and overwrite the outside target.

Use descriptor-relative or equivalent atomic no-follow operations for parent creation, workflow replacement, and forced-backup creation. A second realpath check does not close this race.
