Commander.js v12.1.0 source showSuggestionAfterError error unknownCommand suggestion formatting
💡 Result:
In **Commander.js v12.1.0**, `showSuggestionAfterError()` is enabled by default. For an unknown command, `unknownCommand()`:
1. Gets the first parsed argument as the unknown command name.
2. If suggestions are enabled, collects visible command names and each command’s first alias.
3. Passes those candidates to `suggestSimilar()`.
4. Appends any suggestion to `error: unknown command '<name>'` and raises `commander.unknownCommand`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tj/commander.js/v12.1.0/lib/command.js))
Suggestion formatting is:
- One match: `\n(Did you mean <name>?)`
- Multiple tied matches: `\n(Did you mean one of <name1>, <name2>?)`
- No qualifying match: no suffix.
The matcher uses edit distance, requires similarity **greater than 0.4**, and only suggests candidates longer than one character. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tj/commander.js/v12.1.0/lib/suggestSimilar.js))
So, for example, a typo might produce:
```text
error: unknown command 'buid'
(Did you mean build?)
```
That example is illustrative; the exact suggestion depends on the registered visible commands and aliases. Turning suggestions off with `.showSuggestionAfterError(false)` suppresses the suffix. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tj/commander.js/v12.1.0/lib/command.js))

Commander.js v12.1.0 public export suggestSimilar unknownCommand API route normal unknown command path
💡 Result:
In **Commander.js v12.1.0**, `suggestSimilar` is an **internal helper, not a public package export**. It is exported by the internal `lib/suggestSimilar.js` file, but the package’s `index.js` exports do not re-export it, and the package export map exposes only the package root and `./esm.mjs`. So `require('commander').suggestSimilar` is not part of the public API. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tj/commander.js/v12.1.0/lib/suggestSimilar.js))
`Command.unknownCommand()` is likewise marked `@private`, though it is a method on `Command`; it builds suggestions internally and raises `commander.unknownCommand`. The normal unknown-command route uses this internal method. For supported behavior, configure suggestions with `.showSuggestionAfterError(false)`; to handle the error yourself, use the `commander.unknownCommand` error code with `.exitOverride()`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tj/commander.js/v12.1.0/lib/command.js))
**Bottom line:** neither `suggestSimilar` nor `unknownCommand` is a documented public extension point. The published declarations also don’t declare `unknownCommand`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/tj/commander.js/v12.1.0/typings/index.d.ts))

Preserve suggestions in the help-masking path.
help <unknown> and <unknown> --help call program.error() directly. Commander adds suggestions only in its unknownCommand() path. Therefore, these cases can keep exit code 5 and the JSON envelope but omit (Did you mean ...?) when a matching command exists.
Apply Commander’s suggestion formatting before this program.error() call, or restructure the guard so the normal unknown-command path handles the error. Do not import Commander’s private suggestSimilar or unknownCommand helpers.

Closing with #544 — we'll enable the suggestion as part of the command-surface rewrite. Thanks for the PR. |
Closes #544
Enables Commander's built-in suggestion-after-error on the whole command tree, so typos such as
testsprite tstprint(Did you mean test?). Exit codes and JSON envelopes are unchanged.Summary by CodeRabbit
