build: draw scene files offscreen for before/after images - #396
The docs images cover only what DocsImages.swift draws. A visible change anywhere else, such as the starter bar, edit mode, a popup or a Settings page, could only show its before and after through screenshots of a running bar, which differ from Mac to Mac and put a second bar on the developer's screen.
Changes
Scene files, scenes/*.json, described by scene.schema.json. A scene holds a configuration, inline or as a path, the sample outputs, graph history, AeroSpace workspaces and active app its widgets show, and what to draw: the bar, edit mode, a widget's popup or a Settings page, in dark, light or both.
A hidden StableBar --render-scenes OUTPUT SCENE... draws them offscreen at twice their size with the fixed date from build: draw the docs images the same on every run #395, and writes scenes.json with each scene's images or the error that stopped it. It runs nothing: no command, provider, window manager or network request, and Settings never loads a neighbouring setup's bar.
Five starter scenes cover what the docs images don't: the starter configuration's bar and its edit mode, Settings' General and Bar sections, and the Essentials clock's popup.
CONTRIBUTING's new Scenes section and AGENTS.md explain the format and the command, and CODEOWNERS covers scenes/ and the schema.
The second of three stacked pull requests: #395, this one, then #397.
Testing
swift test as in build: draw the docs images the same on every run #395. SceneFileTests and SceneRendererTests cover decoding (unknown keys, sizes, inline and path configurations), that a render runs and fetches nothing, that each appearance gets its own store, and that a failed scene still leaves the others and scenes.json.
A scene file holds a configuration, inline or as a path, the sample outputs, graph history,
AeroSpace workspaces and active app its widgets show, and what to draw: the bar, edit mode, a
widget's popup or a Settings page, in one or both appearances. Unknown properties are errors, as
in configurations, and scene.schema.json describes the format.
SceneRenderer reads the scene's configuration as the test fixtures do and gives each script
widget and provider the scene's sample output and history, or an empty output. Its workspaces
come from AeroSpace's JSON, its Store index is a local, empty file, and it never starts the
store, so no command, provider, window manager or network request runs.
SceneRenderer draws what a scene asks for over the setup tour's backdrop, at twice its size, with
the fixed date: the bar, the bar in edit mode once its trays are measured, a widget's popup, or a
widget's page or a section in Settings. The offscreen snapshot moves out of DocsImages unchanged:
a docs render after the move matches the one before it in every pixel of all 14 images. Waiting
for the views now gives up after a minute instead of hanging.
StableBar --render-scenes OUTPUT SCENE... draws each scene file, or every scene file in a folder,
to OUTPUT as <name>-<appearance>.png, in UTC. It writes scenes.json beside them with each scene's
images or the error that stopped it, so a build that can't read a newer scene still reports the
others, and exits 1 when any scene failed.
Five scenes cover what the docs images don't: the starter configuration's bar and its edit
mode, Settings' General and Bar sections, and the Essentials clock's popup. They read
Resources/config.json and examples/essentials.json, so a change to either shows in its scenes. A
test loads every scene in scenes/. CONTRIBUTING.md explains the format and the command, and
AGENTS.md points visible changes at scenes for their before/after images.
A review found ways a scene render could leave its scene. Settings switched to a setup's own
bar beside the configuration, which loaded the normal way and ran its scripts: the store now
shows a scene through showWithoutRunning, which takes everything the loader read (profiles,
packages, contributions) without starting anything. Each appearance gets its own store, so
profiles for dark or light apply. An inline configuration reads as if it sat beside its scene,
so its includes resolve there and Settings shows the same path on every run.
A width or height outside 100 to 4000 or 20 to 4000 points is an error instead of a crash, and
renderAll counts a report it couldn't write as a failure.

Unblocks: 1 PR
Merge Risk: Low · up to 7125c
Rendering still inspects host application state, but the impact is bounded and the correction is localized.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 7125c
The inspected rendering path separates sample data from command execution and remote image loading. Its exposure is primarily local file access and output generation. No material security regression was established, but incomplete verification of all rendered views and failure paths prevents a minimal-risk assessment.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected authority is local: caller-selected scenes supply configuration paths and image content, while the command writes to a caller-selected output directory. Offline rendering is an execution control, not a demonstrated filesystem sandbox; local configuration and image reads remain available.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Scene preparation supplies sampled ScriptWidget instances instead of starting scripts or providers. Workspace connection setup is gated by managesConnections, which starts false. The scene package client uses an empty temporary local index, and popup image loading rejects non-file URLs when the offline environment is active.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The shared capture path has a readiness deadline and deferred window hiding, while batch rendering defers store shutdown. These controls contain ordinary thrown failures. They do not establish atomic publication or recovery after process termination, and the inspected code does not coordinate separate invocations writing the same output directory.

Reject empty and duplicate appearances in the decoder.
scene.schema.json sets "minItems": 1 and "uniqueItems": true for appearances. This decoder accepts both cases. The schema and the decoder now disagree, and sceneSchemaListsTheSamePropertiesAsTheDecoder compares only property names and enum values, so it does not catch the gap.
Trace for "appearances": []:
SceneFile.init(from:) accepts the empty array.
The loop over scene.appearances in SceneRenderer.renderAll runs zero times.
renderAll writes "images": [] to scenes.json, does not count a failure, and exits with status 0.
The scene draws nothing and the run still reports success.
Trace for ["dark", "dark"]:
The same image is drawn twice.
The image name appears twice in the report.
The CONTRIBUTING text says a build reports a scene it cannot read as an error. Make the decoder enforce the schema.

+ if appearances.isEmpty || Set(appearances).count != appearances.count {+ throw DecodingError.dataCorruptedError(forKey: .appearances, in: values,+ debugDescription: "Appearances name dark, light or both, each once.")+ }
Add a case to sceneRejectsImpossibleSizes or a new test for "appearances": [] and ["dark", "dark"].

Replace fixed sleeps in negative scene-store tests with counted polls.
Three tests wait a fixed time before they assert that nothing started. At lines 64, 288, and 306 the waits are 1.5 s, 1 s, and 500 ms. Each test asserts absence afterward. If the sleep ends before the started work runs, the assertion passes without proving anything.
Replace each sleep with a bounded loop that counts iterations. Stop when the observed state changes or the count runs out. Keep the absence assertions after the loop. Poll only state that the started work updates, such as diagnostics.lastStarted or RecordingURLProtocol.requests.

From CodeRabbit's review: scene.schema.json allows one or both appearances, each once, but
the decoder took an empty list, which drew nothing and still reported success, and a
repeated one, which drew the same image twice. Both are errors now, reported like any
scene a build can't read.
Empty or repeated appearances: fixed in 235b07c. The decoder now rejects [] and a repeated appearance, as scene.schema.json says, so such a scene is reported as one a build can't read instead of drawing nothing and passing. sceneRejectsEmptyOrRepeatedAppearances covers both.
Fixed sleeps in the three "nothing started" tests: kept as they are. These tests assert that something doesn't happen, so they have to wait a fixed budget either way. A counted poll with the same budget would fail sooner when work does start, but it would catch nothing more: work that starts after the budget slips past both. What matters is that the budget is long enough, and the tests were written to fail against the bugs they guard. settingsSceneLoadsNoOtherBar failed while a Settings render ran a neighbouring bar's script, sceneRenderMakesNoImageRequest failed while an image block reached the network, and both went green with the fixes. A started script records lastStarted before its command launches, which is what sceneStoreRunsNoCommand checks within its 1.5 seconds.
As CodeRabbit found for the docs images' offline test in the pull request below this one:
the recorder appended requests from URL loading threads while the test read and reset the
list on the main actor. A lock guards it now.

Defer the frontmost-app read until normal startup.
BarStore reads NSWorkspace.shared.frontmostApplication during construction, before SceneRenderer assigns the scene’s SampleApp. This violates the scene contract that rendering performs no app reading, even though the value is later replaced.

Review comment at @Sources/StableBar/SceneRenderer.swift around lines 29 - 30:
Update BarStore initialization so constructing it does not read
NSWorkspace.shared.frontmostApplication; initialize activeApp without reading
the frontmost app, then perform that read in BarStore.start(on:) during normal
startup before setting up the system context. Preserve SceneRenderer’s ability
to assign its SampleApp without triggering an app read.

On CodeRabbit's follow-up comment about the frontmost app: not changed in this pull request.
BarStore reads NSWorkspace.shared.frontmostApplication as it's created. That read has no side effects: it starts nothing and asks nothing of the network. SceneRenderer.store(for:) replaces the value with the scene's SampleApp (SceneRenderer.swift:52) before anything is drawn, as DocsImages does, so renders never show it. The scenes' promise is that they run nothing (no command, provider, window manager or network request), and this read is none of those.
The suggested change would leave every BarStore's activeApp empty until start(on:), for the app and the tests alike: a behavior change outside this pull request, for a value the renders already replace.
