Problem

The docs images change on every run, so they can't show what a pull request changes. They drew the time of the render, Settings asked the Store's index over the network, the active app came from whatever was running, image blocks fetched remote URLs, and the shimmer followed the live time. Comparing a pull request's screens with main's, which the next two pull requests do, needs renders that change only when the app does.

Changes

  • A fixedDate environment value replaces the live time wherever a view draws one: every bar widget, the clock's calendar popup, and the clock row and format samples in Settings.
  • The docs images draw Thursday 22 October 2026, 09:41 in UTC, the time the sample clock already showed, with a local, empty Store index.
  • Renders set an offline value, so remote images stay empty, and the active app is a sample one, Finder, built from its bundle instead of the running apps. The shimmer draws the fixed date too.
  • CONTRIBUTING's Docs images section says so.

This is the first of three stacked pull requests: this one, then #396 (scene files), then #397 (the before/after screens bot).

Testing

  • swift test on the stack: XCTest 297 of 297. Swift Testing passes except pinnedPopupsStayOnScreenAndReturnUnderTheirWidget, which fails on unchanged main too on a Mac with an external display attached.
  • New tests: the bar clock, the calendar, the format samples and the shimmer draw the fixed date; the sample app takes its name and icon from its bundle; an offline render makes no image request.
  • Two renders of this branch on one Mac, a minute apart, differ in 0 pixels across all 14 docs images. The fork rehearsal of ci: post before/after screens and a visual review on pull requests #397 drew them on GitHub's macOS runners from two separate builds without a pixel of difference.

A docs image's clock as main draws it (the time of the render), as this branch draws it (the fixed date), and the changed pixels in red:

A fixedDate environment value replaces the live time in the views that draw one: every bar
widget, the clock's calendar popup, and the clock row and format samples in Settings. Renders
set it, so a clock no longer changes their pixels from one run to the next.
The Essentials images drew the time of the render, and Settings asked the Store's index over the
network. The renderer now draws a fixed date in UTC, Thursday 22 October 2026 at 09:41, the time
the bar's sample clock already shows, and gives every store a local, empty Store index.

Two renders of this commit on one Mac, a minute apart, differ in 0 pixels across all 14 images.
…r a moving shimmer

A review found three more things that could change the docs images from one run to the next.
The active app came from the running apps, and the lookup could miss Finder and show Desktop:
SampleApp now takes an app's name and icon from its bundle. An image block fetched remote URLs:
renders set an offline environment value, and remote images stay empty there. The shimmer
followed the live time: it draws the fixed date when a render sets one.

Two renders of this commit on one Mac differ in 0 pixels across all 14 images.

Walkthrough

The change adds fixed-date and offline environment controls for widget rendering. Documentation snapshots set UTC, use a local empty package index, and use a sample application. Tests check date-based rendering and offline image loading.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 26012

The Calculator test can fail in non-English locales, and the offline-image test can miss delayed requests. Address these test risks before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 26012

The rendering controls reduce network use while preserving normal application defaults. No introduced security issue was established. Residual uncertainty concerns indirect rendering paths and behavior during interruption, rather than a demonstrated boundary bypass.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure change is confined to rendering within the existing application process and its documentation samples. Comparing base and head shows that the new image guard removes a network-loading branch when enabled; it does not add URL schemes, filesystem authority, credentials, or a remotely callable endpoint.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The offline control is evaluated before the remote-image request. Documentation snapshots set it to true when constructing the root view, so the inspected render path does not depend on cancelling an already-started online request. Normal application rendering defaults to false.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The image task remains keyed only by path, not by offline state. Dynamic offline switching therefore is not implemented as an in-flight revocation mechanism. The current documentation caller supplies a constant true value, and the existing cancellation checks remain unchanged.

Synchronize the recorded requests.

RecordingURLProtocol.startLoading() appends to requests, while offlineImagesMakeNoRequest reads and resets that array. The URL loading system runs asynchronously, so nonisolated(unsafe) does not make these accesses safe. Protect all three operations with a lock or a synchronized recorder. This prevents a data race and intermittent test failures. (developer.apple.com)

Replace the request deadline with poll counts.

The test allows approximately 15 seconds for the online request, then waits another 200 ms before asserting. Main-actor scheduling can exceed either wall-clock bound on CI. Count polls for request arrival and subsequent observation instead. As per path instructions, “A test that bounds main-actor scheduling with wall-clock time (short sleeps, deadline loops, short timeouts) fails at random on CI: suggest waiting by counting polls instead.”

Cover the BarInspector caller in the fixed-date test.

clockFormatSamplesUseTheGivenDate calls WidgetClockFormat.sample(at:) directly. It does not render BarInspector.clockFormats, which reads fixedDate from the environment and passes it to that helper. A regression that changes this caller to use .now would pass the current test while making Settings renders time-dependent.

Add a caller-level test that renders the clock Settings samples with an injected fixedDate and checks repeated and changed dates. This tests the path used by DocsImages when it renders SettingsView.

Extend the fixed-date tests to cover BarInspector.clockFormats: render the clock
Settings samples with fixedDate injected through the environment, then verify
repeated dates produce consistent samples and changing the date changes them.
This should exercise the caller path used when SettingsView is rendered, not
only WidgetClockFormat.sample(at:).

From CodeRabbit's review:
- The offline image test's recorder appended requests from URL loading threads while the
test read and reset the list on the main actor. A lock guards it now.
- No test drew Settings' clock format samples, which take the render's fixed date. A test
draws them a day apart in an offscreen window, where their lazy grid lays out, and fails
when they draw the live date instead.

On CodeRabbit's three points:

  • The recorded requests weren't synchronized: fixed in 26012b3. The URL loading system appended from its own threads while the test read and reset the list on the main actor; an OSAllocatedUnfairLock guards it now. build: draw scene files offscreen for before/after images #396's scene test had the same recorder and got the same lock in 7125cde.
  • The request wait as a deadline: kept. It already counts polls (for _ in 0..<150 where requests.isEmpty), so a slow main actor stretches the wait rather than cutting it short, as the repository's guidance asks. The 200 ms after it only gives a request from the offline image time to land, and that image's task starts before the online one's.
  • Settings' clock samples weren't drawn by a test: added in 26012b3. clockSettingsSamplesDrawTheFixedDate draws the inspector of a time-only clock a day apart, so only the samples can differ. It draws them in an offscreen window, because ImageRenderer doesn't lay out their lazy grid. With the samples switched back to .now, the test fails.

Make the Calculator name assertion locale-aware.

SampleApp reads CFBundleDisplayName with Bundle.object(forInfoDictionaryKey:), which returns localized values. On a non-English macOS locale, localizedName can therefore differ from "Calculator", causing this test to fail. Assert that the localized name exists instead of comparing it with an English literal.

Suggested fix
-    #expect(app.localizedName == "Calculator")
+    #expect(app.localizedName?.isEmpty == false)

Nitpick Require offline task completion before checking requests.

46-50: Trivial · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Require offline task completion before checking requests.

The loop stops when any request arrives and otherwise continues after 150 polls. It does not require the offline WidgetImage task to finish. If the offline task starts after the final 200 ms sleep, removing the offline guard can still produce a false pass.

Add a test-only completion probe to the offline WidgetImage task. Signal it from a defer so early returns and errors also complete the probe. Poll the probe with a bounded count, then use try #require(offlineProbe.finished) before reading RecordingURLProtocol.requests. This must fail on timeout before the request assertion runs.

From CodeRabbit's review: the test expected "Calculator", but an app's display name can be
localized, so a Mac in another language could fail it. It now expects the name Finder shows
for the app, which comes from the same localized bundle information.

On CodeRabbit's follow-up comments:

  • The Calculator name in other languages: fixed in c3354ff, though not with isEmpty == false, which would also pass if the name came from the running apps. The test now expects the name Finder shows for the app (FileManager.displayName(atPath:), without its extension), which comes from the same localized bundle information and holds in any language.
  • A completion probe for the offline image's task: not added. It would put a test-only hook into WidgetImage for a gap this test doesn't show in practice. Both images appear in the same turn, the offline one first, so its task starts before the online one's, and the test only reads the requests after the online request has arrived and 200 ms more. The test failed against the bug it guards (remote images loaded during renders) before the fix, so the wait is long enough to see a request.
