Two worktrees can now run local Supabase verification at the same time. They no longer queue behind one shared lock. Stale locks no longer block every gate, and each stack starts only the services the tests use.

Needs Adam's OK to merge: this PR changes supabase/functions/_shared/cors.ts. Production behaviour doesn't change (see CORS below), but under AGENTS.md anything in supabase/ waits for Adam. Nothing here needs an Edge Function deploy to work.

What changes

  • Two slots. .superset/lib/slot.sh keeps slot 1 identical to today's ports and names, so CI and the docs don't change. Slot 2 moves every port up by 100 through the CLI's SUPABASE_*_PORT overrides:

    • Supabase: API 54421, DB 54422;
    • app 18181, fake provider 18190, collaboration 12445;
    • its own fake-provider container and lock;
    • its own reserved Docker subnet, because Docker's next default overlaps the Pi's tailnet route.

    db-gate.sh and verify.sh take the first free slot. DEBATELAB_STACK_SLOTS=1 restores one slot.

  • Locks. lock.py does recovery, acquire and release under one fcntl guard. It reclaims a lock left by a dead process, a plain file, or an empty directory older than 120 s, which is the case that blocked every worktree on 10-14 and 10-23. All lock.sh callers now need python3, including dev.sh, teardown.sh and e2e-port.sh on a Mac.

  • Heavy-job lock. .superset/heavy.sh runs local vite build and the full gate's browser phase under flock -o, so two heavy builds never run together on the VPS. It is skipped when CI is set or flock is missing.

  • Fewer services. The gate and the verify stack skip Studio, postgres-meta, logflare, vector, supavisor and Realtime, which no test, recipe or Edge Function uses. A stack drops from 12 containers and 1,576 MiB to 7 containers and 717 MiB. CI also pulls five fewer images; today's scheduled Database run died pulling Studio ("Data limit exceeded" from public.ecr.aws).

  • CORS. cors.ts also accepts an origin listed in LOCAL_GATE_APP_ORIGINS, but only when isDevOrigin agrees (http: and an exact local host). Only the local gate and verify stack write that variable, into their own function.env. Production and staging never set it, so Access-Control-Allow-Origin there is unchanged. cors.test.ts covers an allowed dev origin and a listed non-dev origin, which is still rejected.

Verification

Head 61a53ea1. CI passes all 8 checks.

  • Parallel runs:
    • two worktrees ran ./.superset/db-gate.sh --db-only at the same time, and both passed (31 pgTAP files, 545 assertions each);
    • the slot 1 database gate and the slot 2 full gate also passed side by side.
  • Reduced services: the full gate passed with 73 tests passed and 1 skipped (498f61a). Full gate at the final head 61a53ea1: pgTAP PASS, 73 browser tests passed, 1 skipped.
  • verify-debatelab on the reduced stack (desktop and mobile, every recipe):
    • desktop: 79 passed, 2 skipped;
    • mobile: 78 passed, 2 skipped, 1 failed. The failure is lib-edit-while-switching, which passed in the previous mobile run on the same head; it's a flaky recipe that this PR doesn't touch;
    • slot 2 up, drive recipes/auth.spec.ts (desktop and mobile) and down passed.
  • Locks: a stale empty directory and a plain lock file are reclaimed, and live and fresh locks are kept. db-gate.test.ts checks that a second caller is refused while another reclaims a stale lock; it fails with the fcntl guard removed.
  • Local checks at 61a53ea1: npm run verify passed all 10 steps in 129 s (docs, jargon, typecheck, lint, unit, collaboration, build, smoke, sw-offline, edge), and npx vitest run src/test/scripts/db-gate.test.ts passed 5/5.

Reviews

  • Round 1 (Codex, f44f18d): two P2 findings, a stale-lock race and missing cleanup after a failed network create. Both fixed in d807b90.
  • Round 2 (Claude, 498f61a; Codex was at its usage cap): one High and four Low findings, all fixed in 14ce7ac:
    • the gate test expected a bare supabase start;
    • heavy.sh leaked the lock to detached children;
    • the Mailpit container lookup was an unanchored name match;
    • a race test that couldn't fail;
    • stale docs.
  • Round 3 (Claude, 14ce7ac): no findings.
  • Since round 3: 61a53ea makes the test hook wait for a file instead of a FIFO, because knip flagged mkfifo as an unlisted binary. Self-reviewed, since round 3 is the cap.

The first-run onboarding check (e2e/full-stack/first-run.spec.ts:76) failed once on unchanged main code during the first slot run. It passed in every full gate since. This PR changes no app code or e2e/ specs.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Developer Experience

    • Local verification and database checks can now run concurrently in up to two worktrees, using separate ports and isolated environments. When both slots are occupied, checks can wait for one to become available.
    • Builds and browser verification are coordinated to reduce overlap between resource-intensive tasks.
    • Local development origins can be explicitly allowed for CORS checks.
  • Documentation

    • Updated setup and testing guidance covers slot allocation, port differences, recovery, and concurrency limits.

This PR changes supabase/. Its debatelab-staging preview talks to staging, which runs main's migrations and Edge Functions, so this PR's backend changes are not there yet. The VPS staging sync applies them within about 5 minutes of the merge. To try them before merging, use the verify-debatelab skill against a local stack. See docs/staging.md.

Walkthrough

The local database gate and interactive verification stack now share a two-slot allocator. Each slot has its own ports, lock, network subnet, and fake-provider name. Verification commands and browser checks use the allocated app origin, and selected local heavy jobs use a shared lock.

Changes: Local stack allocation and verification

Layer / File(s) Summary
Locking and slot allocation
.superset/lib/lock.py, .superset/lib/lock.sh, .superset/lib/slot.sh, src/test/scripts/db-gate.test.ts
Lock operations now use a Python helper with guarded stale-lock recovery and owner checks. Slot helpers configure one of two resource sets, prepare the corresponding network, and retry acquisition. Tests cover stale locks, concurrent recovery, slot selection, and slot limits.
Gate and verification stack startup
.superset/db-gate.sh, .claude/skills/verify-debatelab/bin/verify.sh, .superset/heavy.sh, scripts/verify.mjs, AGENTS.md, docs/development.md, docs/testing.md, .claude/skills/verify-debatelab/SKILL.md, src/test/scripts/db-gate.test.ts
The gate and verification stack use slot configuration for startup, service ports, network preparation, saved state, and cleanup. Supabase starts with configured exclusions. The heavy-job wrapper runs selected local builds and browser tests under a shared lock. Guidance and tests describe and check the updated workflows.
Slot-specific app origins and browser checks
.superset/db-gate.sh, .claude/skills/verify-debatelab/*, scripts/workspace-test-env.mjs, package.json, supabase/functions/_shared/*, supabase/README.md
The local app origin and browser URLs follow the allocated slot. The CORS check accepts configured origins only when they are development origins and exact matches. Browser assertions validate the callback origin, path, query keys, and flow-ID format.

Explanation

The title "Make local Supabase verification parallel-safe with two slots" matches the main change. The changeset adds two isolated local Supabase stack slots (slot 1 keeps existing ports, slot 2 uses ports offset by 100, with its own lock, fake-provider container, and Docker subnet), so two worktrees can run verification concurrently. Supporting changes include the slot allocator in .superset/lib/slot.sh, Python-based lock handling, the heavy-job flock lock, and the CORS change for LOCAL_GATE_APP_ORIGINS. The title is concise, specific, and omits no critical aspect of the primary change.

The scheduled Database run on main (41048360004) failed before any test:
CI could not pull studio and edge-runtime from public.ecr.aws ("Data
limit exceeded"). The gate and the verify stack now skip studio,
postgres-meta, logflare, vector, supavisor and realtime, which no test
or recipe uses. A stack drops from 12 containers and 1,576 MiB to 7 and
717 MiB, so two slots fit on the VPS and CI pulls five fewer images.
Storage stays: account deletion empties the user's buckets.

The full gate passes with the reduced set: pgTAP PASS, 73 browser tests
passed, 1 skipped.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- db-gate.test.ts expected a bare `supabase start`; it now expects the
  exclusion list, so dropping the list fails the test.
- heavy.sh passes -o to flock, so a detached child such as the
  collaboration server can't keep the heavy lock after Playwright dies.
- The Mailpit lookup anchors the container name. With two stacks up, a
  substring match could return another worktree's container.
- The stale-lock race test now pauses lock.py itself (a test-only hook)
  between judging a lock stale and removing it, and checks that a second
  caller is refused. With the fcntl guard removed it fails; the old test
  passed either way because lock.py never called the bash mkdir/rmdir
  it intercepted.
- supabase/README.md lists LOCAL_GATE_APP_ORIGINS; docs/testing.md no
  longer says the gate starts every Supabase service.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
CI lint failed on 14ce7ac: knip reports `mkfifo` as an unlisted binary.
The test-only hook in lock.py now waits for the pause file to appear
instead of reading a FIFO, so the test needs no extra binary. It still
fails with the fcntl guard removed.

Update the two stale statements that contradict the new two-slot model.

Line 14 now documents two parallel slots. Two other lines still describe the old single-stack behavior:

  • Line 45 says "The stack is not parallel-safe across worktrees."
  • Line 110 says the verification stack "holds the same lock as ./.superset/db-gate.sh, so only one worktree can run it at a time."

An agent that follows these lines will serialize work that the change makes parallel. Or it will skip the slot-2 ports. Rewrite both lines to describe the two slots. Point Line 45 to .superset/lib/slot.sh for the port table.

Proposed fix
-- Local Supabase: CLI defaults beginning at `54321`. The stack is not parallel-safe across worktrees.
+- Local Supabase: slot 1 uses CLI defaults beginning at `54321`; slot 2 adds 100 to each port. Two worktrees can run at once. See `.superset/lib/slot.sh`.
-- The stack holds the same lock as `./.superset/db-gate.sh`, so only one worktree can run it at a time.
+- The stack takes one of the two slots that `./.superset/db-gate.sh` also uses, so at most two worktrees can run local stacks at once.

Restrict the base URL to loopback.

This config accepts a non-loopback PLAYWRIGHT_BASE_URL. A direct Playwright run with the required stack environment can then enter a real demo code on that host. verify.sh drive normally supplies a loopback URL, but the config does not enforce that boundary. Reject non-loopback URLs before starting the suite.

As per path instructions, “For browser suites that write a real session, restrict the base URL to loopback.” (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Kill the paused helper when an assertion fails.

Helper a touches ${pause}.ready, then loops until the pause file exists. If a check between Line 87 and Line 92 fails, the test never creates pause. The a process then loops forever, and the open stdio pipes can stall the Vitest worker.

expect.poll at Line 87 also uses the default 1000 ms timeout. A loaded host can exceed this while Python starts, and that case triggers the leak.

Add a finally block that always stops a. Give the poll an explicit timeout.

Proposed fix
