A short introduction to PolicyEngine and our Budget planning, for a press conversation on 9 October 2026, at /slides/introduction-2026. It assumes no prior knowledge of PolicyEngine.

Request Review

- The Telegraph National Insurance story is from October 2024, not May 2025
(the link was shared in #uk-comms on 28 October 2024, before that Budget).
- The household data are licensed survey data, so the deck says the code and
method are open rather than the data.
- The Lords citation is labelled House of Lords and shown without the crowned
  portcullis, whose use is restricted.
- NEF's card links to its July 2026 report, and the community slide lists the
  sources behind its cards.
- Speaker notes cover how to describe No 10's use, and what to say if asked
for the childcare costing while its corrections land.

- Autumn Budget 2025: the dashboard went live on Budget day with three
measures beside the OBR and the constituency map; all nine and the
household calculator followed by 28 November (per the dashboard repo's
  commit history).
- Autumn Budget 2026: gives the date (Wednesday 28 October), drops the
"within hours" promise and the jargon, and ties constituency results to
the local data passing its checks.
- How it works: council tax itself is read from the data, so the rules list
names Council Tax Reduction, which the model computes.
- Tax Policy Associates: the card links the article that credits
PolicyEngine, under its headline, instead of an X post that doesn't.
- Land value tax: the card shows the post's own decile chart in place of a
campaign-rally photo, and is marked as a guest post.
- Speaker notes add the Telegraph story's details and likely questions:
TPA's correction of our age counts, how No 10 came to use PolicyEngine,
inheritance tax, and accuracy against the OBR.

Each media card now carries one line on what we gave the piece, checked
against the article: TPA's cross-check, CapX's £409m bus fare cap cost, NEF's
modelling, City AM's £0.77bn, SMF's £4.7bn lower bound, and the Telegraph's
1p employer NI scenario. The electricity VAT card gets a plain 5% to 0%
cover in place of the press photo.
