HTTPS measurement flow native/opennow-core/src/network.rs |
measure_region creates a blocking HTTPS client with a three-second timeout and sends a warm-up HEAD request. It records responses, including HTTP errors, as successful samples; transport failures discard samples. The offline-region test expects the HTTPS warm-up error. |

Region pings now use HTTPS, but the HTTP client is built without system-proxy support. On networks that require a configured system proxy, every region ping can fail. Enable the proxy feature before merging. A smaller edge case remains: an endpoint that redirects to an unreachable location is reported as failed.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Disable automatic redirects for measurement requests.
Reqwest follows redirects by default. If an endpoint returns a 302 to an unreachable destination or into a redirect loop, .send() returns an error despite receiving an HTTP response. The warm-up then reports failure, contrary to the rule that any HTTP response counts. Set redirect(reqwest::redirect::Policy::none()) so the probe measures and accepts the endpoint’s response. official reqwest 0.12 system-proxy feature default-features false Client proxy documentation
💡 Result:
For **reqwest 0.12.28**, `system-proxy` is enabled by default. With `default-features = false`, it’s **off unless you explicitly enable it**. To keep automatic system-proxy support, add `"system-proxy"` to your features; it maps to `hyper-util/client-proxy-system`. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/reqwest/0.12.28/reqwest/))
```toml
reqwest = {
version = "0.12",
default-features = false,
features = ["system-proxy", "rustls-tls"]
}
```
`ClientBuilder::proxy(...)` adds a proxy and disables automatic system-proxy use; `no_proxy()` disables proxy use altogether. ([docs.rs](https://docs.rs/reqwest/0.12.28/reqwest/struct.ClientBuilder.html))
The exact patch release matters: the official sources above are for **0.12.28**.

Enable reqwest system-proxy support.
default-features = false disables reqwest 0.12.28's default system-proxy feature. The new reqwest::blocking::Client can therefore ignore configured system proxies, causing the HTTPS warm-up request to fail for proxy-only users.

Rechecked both findings in this thread. Redirect following is already disabled by Policy::none(). OS-level proxy discovery is still absent because the core's reqwest features do not include system-proxy; environment proxy variables remain supported. Whether these probes should follow the OS proxy or OpenNOW's explicit session proxy needs a deliberate routing decision, so I am leaving this thread open.
Separately, pushed fa3f82c to fix the three platform rustfmt failures and de3ccd2 to reuse the existing bounded resolver instead of doing an unbounded DNS lookup before client timeouts. The new cancellation regression fails before the fix and passes afterward. Seven focused network tests, 68 network-related tests, strict all-target Clippy and formatting pass. This does not establish live VPN RTT accuracy or resolve proxy-policy and connection-reuse validation.

Thanks. HTTPS round-trip timing is the right fix for #1288. A few problems need fixing first (all reproduced against this branch). The PR also targets
The rest checks out: HTTP stalls time out at ~3 s, failed or untrusted TLS returns null instead of falling back to TCP timing, and the core suite passes (833). |
VPN tunnels make TCP connect RTT lie. Time an HTTPS HEAD on a keep-alive connection instead, with redirects disabled, DNS pinned to pre-resolved addresses so Client drop cannot outlive the timeout, and fresh-TLS outliers retried then dropped. Co-authored-by: Cursor <cursoragent@cursor.com>

Verified the remaining connection-reuse limitation against the actual core binary built at de3ccd2, using its JSON protocol and two bounded loopback HTTP/1.1 origins. Each response waits 10 ms before answering HEAD.
The second case still produces a numeric sample even though no measured request reuses the warm-up connection. |

Published Two regressions failed before the fix. With a 10 ms response delay, the actual core JSON CLI now reports:
All 12 focused network tests and the full core suite pass, with 866 passed and 4 ignored. Formatting and strict all-target Clippy pass; parent independently reran the 12 focused tests. Fresh CI/review is pending. The existing proxy review thread stays open. Routing policy is unchanged, and real VPN/provider acceptance remains unverified. This identifies the client-visible TCP connection, not a proxy's hidden upstream connection. Rustls/CONNECT/SOCKS metadata propagation was checked in dependency source; runtime regressions use HTTP loopback, not authenticated live proxies. |
Problem: the Settings → Network "Ping regions" button reports local tunnel latency, not region latency, for users behind VPN tunnels or transparent proxies. A TCP connect against such a tunnel completes on the spot (~2 ms), so the picker shows values that look like frame-render numbers instead of real RTT. Fixes #1288.
Reproduction (macOS, VPN active):
Fix:
measure_regionnow measures with a reused HTTPS connection: a warm-up request establishes TLS (and validates the endpoint), then three timed HEAD samples each measure one request/response round trip through the real network path, which a local interceptor cannot satisfy without producing a server response. Any HTTP response (including 4xx/5xx) counts as a successful round trip; only transport failure fails a sample. Averaging and cancellation semantics are unchanged.Scope:
network.rsis shared core code, so all platforms take the new measurement. For users without intercepting tunnels the value is equivalent to the old one (plus one TLS handshake per measurement); for users behind them, the old value was wrong on every OS. The queue probe (measure_queue_region) keeps its TCP measurement: it probes the streaming path where TCP behavior is what matters.
