Validate OPENNOW_UI_JOBS before the wait loop.
OPENNOW_UI_JOBS=0 makes the scheduler wait with no running jobs. wait -n fails, but || true hides the error, so the loop can hang.
The original abc example is not accurate: with set -u, Bash exits on that value. Other malformed values can bypass the throttle, and positive values outside Bash's arithmetic range can wrap and cause the same empty wait loop.
Reject invalid values before scheduling. The positive-integer regex also needs a bound check for the shell's arithmetic range. The README defines the value as a concurrency count but does not define behavior for invalid input, so fail-fast handling is an appropriate convention.

The Native UI layout job ran all 104 cases one after another on a 4-vCPU GitHub runner and took about 57 minutes. Every case draws its frames in software with Mesa llvmpipe, at about 10 ms per frame and roughly 3,000 frames per Library or Settings case. Almost all of that time was CPU-bound rendering.
Parallel runner.
tests/ui_layout/run.shnow readsOPENNOW_UI_JOBSand runs that many cases at once. Each case gets its own Xvfb display number, so concurrentxvfb-runcalls don't race for a display. Failures are collected from every case, and any failure still makes the script exit nonzero. The default stays at one case at a time.CI matrix. The job now runs as six groups: one per screen, with guest/empty cases added to the overlay group. All six run on
blacksmith-8vcpu-ubuntu-2404, useLP_NUM_THREADS=1, and run one case per vCPU. Each group uploads its own evidence artifact. The case set is unchanged, so the six groups together cover the same 104 cases. On a 4-core machine, the 16 overlay cases took 110 s run one at a time and 32 s run four at a time. When the cases fail, the runner still reports all 16 failures and exits 1.
