fix(trace): record streamed agent turns (start(stream=True)) - #6087
Bug:agent.start(prompt, stream=True) recorded only session_start / session_end. Unlike chat() / achat(), the streaming path emitted no agent_start / agent_end. So a live replay of a streamed answer could not show the agent working: its box never lit up while the words streamed. Reproduced on praisonai 4.7.20.
Fix (_start_stream, about 15 lines): record agent_start when the stream begins, and agent_end with completed, failed or cancelled when it ends. cancelled covers the caller closing the generator early, for example a page that stops reading. Nothing is recorded when tracing is off.
Model-call events are deliberately not invented here. A streamed turn can make several model calls (tool use), and the stream emitter already reports each one (request_start / stream_end).
Tests (4 new, in tests/unit/trace/test_unnamed_agent_trace.py): start and end with completed, early close gives cancelled, an error gives failed, and nothing is recorded when tracing is off. Three of the four fail on main; the fourth guards the tracing-off case. The trace, workflow, agent, llm and streaming suites: 2168 passed.
End to end with real gpt-4o-mini: a page streaming the answer word by word now shows the agent box as running while the text grows (0 → 370 characters), then done.
Streamed agent interactions now include tracing events that show when a turn starts and whether it completes, is cancelled, or fails. Guardrail-blocked turns are recorded as failed.
When tracing is disabled, streamed responses continue without recording these events.
Bug Fixes
Stream errors that trigger a non-streaming fallback now record a single completed turn, without duplicate trace events. Subsequent regular chat interactions continue to be traced independently.
A streamed turn recorded only session_start/session_end: _start_stream
emitted no agent_start/agent_end, unlike chat()/achat(). A live replay could
not show the agent running while its words streamed.
_start_stream now records agent_start when the stream begins and agent_end
with completed / failed / cancelled (the caller stopping early) when it ends.
Nothing is recorded when tracing is off.

Streamed agent turns now emit lifecycle trace events when tracing is enabled. End events report completion, cancellation, or failure. The stream fallback suppresses duplicate lifecycle events from its chat() call.
_start_stream records lifecycle events and reports a terminal status for completion, cancellation, failures, and blocking guardrails or hooks. Tests cover these statuses and tracing-disabled streaming.
The fallback marks its chat() call as already traced and resets that marker afterward. Tests verify that fallback records one turn and a later ordinary chat() call records a separate turn.
Streaming remains usable, but interleaved turns and failed fallbacks can produce inaccurate traces. These bounded observability risks can be accepted with owner awareness or fixed before merging.

@claude You are the FINAL architecture reviewer. If the branch is under MervinPraison/PraisonAI (not a fork), you are able to make modifications to this branch and push directly. SCOPE: Review changes in this PR. Python SDK: praisonaiagents, praisonai. TypeScript SDK: src/praisonai-ts/. Do NOT modify src/praisonai-rust. Read ALL comments above from Gemini, Qodo, CodeRabbit, and Copilot carefully before responding.
MANDATORY READ (before reviewing):
Always read src/praisonai-agents/AGENTS.md
If this PR touches src/praisonai-ts/, also read src/praisonai-ts/AGENTS.md §2.1.2 (TS triage + PR review checklist)
Phase 1: Review per AGENTS.md
Protocol-driven: check heavy implementations vs core SDK
Backward compatible: ensure zero feature regressions
Performance: no hot-path regressions
SDK value: review in depth whether the change genuinely adds value to the SDK — never add features for the sake of adding them. It must strengthen the SDK (simpler, more user-friendly, robust, world-class, secure). If it does not clearly add value, request changes or recommend rejecting/closing rather than merging scope creep
Do not bloat the Agent class with additional params — only if absolutely required; we already support many params.
Repo routing: agent-callable tools → PraisonAI-Tools; lifecycle plugins → PraisonAI-Plugins; optional sandbox backends → PraisonAI-Plugins (praisonai.sandbox entry point) — request changes if wrongly added to praisonaiagents/
6b. External tool examples (examples/tools/external/**): If the diff is confined to that path, mark SDK value ❌ for monorepo merge — redirect the contributor to PraisonAI-Tools; do not Approve for merge unless the PR has the maintainer-accept-example label.
6c. New vendor *_tools.py in core (src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/tools/): If the PR adds a new *_tools.py for a third-party API/SaaS/dataset (e.g. FXMacroData), mark Repo routing ❌ and SDK value ❌ — redirect to MervinPraison/PraisonAI-Tools. Do not Approve because legacy bundled tools (Tavily/Exa/You.com/etc.) already in core are not precedent for new vendor modules. Request changes or recommend closing unless the PR has maintainer-accept-core-tools.

Add the required real streamed-agent test.
These tests replace _start_stream_turn and call _start_stream directly. They cannot verify that Agent.start(..., stream=True) emits the events during an actual LLM stream. Add a real-agentic test for that public path alongside these deterministic tests. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per coding guidelines, “Both smoke AND real agentic tests are required”; the agent must call agent.start() with a real prompt and produce an LLM response.

… once
- _start_stream_turn returns "failed" when an input guardrail or BEFORE_AGENT
hook blocks the turn, so agent_end no longer reports success (parity with chat()).
- The non-streaming chat() fallback no longer emits a second agent_start/agent_end
pair for the same streamed turn.

✅ Uses the existing ContextTraceEmitter the same way chat()/achat() do. No new module.
Backward compatible
✅ No API change. Nothing new is recorded when tracing is off. Stream output is unchanged.
Performance (hot path)
✅ One ContextVar lookup per turn, plus the already-lazy emitter check.
SDK value
✅ Fixes a real gap: streamed turns had no agent_start/agent_end, so live replay could not show the agent running. Brings the stream path in line with chat().
No Agent param bloat
✅ No new params, exports or knobs.
Repo routing
✅ This is a core trace-parity fix in chat_mixin.py, so it belongs in praisonaiagents and not in Plugins.
Both Greptile P2 findings were valid and are now fixed.
Blocked turns showed as successful._start_stream_turn now returns "failed" when the input guardrail or a BEFORE_AGENT hook blocks the turn. _start_stream reads that value through yield from, so agent_end records failed. This matches chat(), where a blocked turn returns None and is recorded as failed.
The fallback recorded the turn twice._stream_fallback_chat sets a _stream_traced_agent ContextVar around the fallback chat() call. While it is set, chat() skips its own agent_start/agent_end for that agent. Model-call events still go through. Other agents (sub-agents) and later normal chat() calls are not affected.
src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/trace/test_unnamed_agent_trace.py: 2 new tests, one for a guardrail-blocked stream (failed) and one for the fallback (a single agent pair; a normal chat() afterwards still records its own pair). Both fail on the previous head and pass now.
Tests: all 15 tests in test_unnamed_agent_trace.py pass. I ran the trace, agent, streaming, llm and workflows unit suites before and after the change and compared them. The change adds no new failures. The failures that remain also fail on the old code: this CI environment is missing optional dependencies such as litellm.
Skipped (on purpose, to keep scope small)
When the fallback chat() returns None (for example, its own guardrail refuses the answer), the stream wrapper still records completed. This is a rare case, and handling it would mean passing the result back through the generator chain.
No synthetic model-call events are added for streams, as the PR body explains: the stream emitter already reports request_start/stream_end.
Phase 3 — Verdict
Every Phase 1 row is ✅ and both reviewer findings are fixed. Approve for merge once CI is green.

Review turns disappear
When streaming falls back to chat() with inline self_improve enabled, _stream_traced_agent stays set throughout the fallback. The separate skill-review turn calls self.chat() on the same agent, so this guard hides its agent_start and agent_end too. Replay and exports lose that extra turn.
Consume the suppression marker when entering the fallback chat(), so nested calls record their own events.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win
Propagate failure from the fallback.
If streaming fails and fallback chat() returns None after catching an LLM error, _start_stream_impl ends without yielding a response. _start_stream_turn then returns no status, so this records completed instead of failed. Propagate the fallback outcome through both generators.

Scope: the PR changes 2 files (+119/−5). The SDK change is praisonaiagents/agent/chat_mixin.py (+33/−5), and agent.py is untouched. It adds no new Agent params, exports, modules or dependencies, so the Agent class does not grow.
SDK value: it fixes a real gap in trace parity. Streamed start(stream=True) turns now record agent_start/agent_end (completed/cancelled/failed), the same events chat()/achat() record, using the existing ContextTraceEmitter. When tracing is off, nothing is recorded. The fallback chat() call does not record the turn a second time.
Routing: this is a core trace fix. It is not a tool, plugin or sandbox backend, and it adds no new *_tools.py.
Tests: 6 new unit tests in tests/unit/trace/test_unnamed_agent_trace.py cover a completed turn, an early close (cancelled), an error (failed), tracing off, a guardrail-blocked turn (failed), and the fallback recording the turn only once.
Reviews: the FINAL architecture review has run and includes the Phase 1 table. Every row is ✅, including SDK value. No review on HEAD 88b9d8c requests changes. The open bot notes are P2 and non-blocking: Greptile's nested review-turn edge case during fallback, and a fallback chat() returning None still showing as completed.
Policy: the author is MervinPraison (OWNER) and the branch is not a fork. There are no blocking labels and no sensitive paths or secrets in the diff. I can see no failed CI check.
Limit: I could not read AGENTS.md or the inline review comments because those tools were not permitted. I checked against the gate checklist rules instead.
