RAB

Room Audio Balance

Precision audio calibration for an ideal listening environment.

RAB helps music producers understand the room before changing the mix. Run one guided room check to see the listening-position frequency response, stereo balance, measurement confidence, and practical next moves for speaker placement, room treatment, and conservative EQ.

RAB runs locally. Test signals are included, and your recordings stay on your computer.

Download RAB

Get the latest build from GitHub Releases:

  • Mac with Apple silicon: macOS-arm64 for M1, M2, M3, M4, or newer.
  • Mac with Intel: macOS-x64.
  • Windows: Windows-x64 for 64-bit Windows 10 or 11.

No Python setup or separate audio samples are required. Unzip the download, then open RAB.app on macOS or RAB.exe inside the RAB folder on Windows.

RAB is currently unsigned. On macOS, Control-click the app and choose Open, or use System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway. On Windows, SmartScreen may show an unknown-publisher warning. SHA-256 checksums are included with every release.

Run a room check

You need a stereo speaker or monitor output, a microphone available to the computer, a quiet room, and a repeatable listening position.

  1. Place the microphone at the listening position, approximately at ear height, and keep it still.
  2. Turn your monitor or interface level down before starting.
  3. Open RAB and select the microphone.
  4. Start the room check and set a comfortable test level when prompted.
  5. Keep the room quiet while RAB measures room tone, left + right, left, and right.
  6. Review the response graph first, then work through the recommended next moves.
  7. Repeat the check before trusting small corrections.

On first launch, allow microphone access when prompted. Read SAFETY.md before running your first sweep.

What you get

  • A frequency-response graph for the listening position.
  • Left/right level and stereo-position guidance.
  • A concise diagnosis that separates likely placement, room, and EQ issues.
  • Conservative 10-band and parametric EQ suggestions with reliability labels.
  • A repeatability check for microphone placement and room conditions.
  • A local evidence folder containing the recordings, report, and copyable EQ profile.

Results are saved to Documents/RAB/<timestamp>/. RAB does not require an account, upload audio, or collect telemetry.

Reading the result

Start with the response graph. Broad peaks and dips show how the room and speakers behave at the listening position; narrow or extreme changes are less useful targets for correction.

Next, review stereo position. A large left/right difference often points to speaker placement, listening-position geometry, or room asymmetry. Follow the placement recommendation and measure again before changing channel gain.

Use EQ last. Positive values are boosts, negative values are cuts, and OFF marks a band RAB does not consider reliable. Apply the profile manually, compare at matched loudness, and keep it tied to the same output device and listening position.

Run from source

RAB requires Python 3.11 or newer when run from source.

git clone https://github.com/yashwanthm/rab.git
cd rab
./run.sh

Develop and contribute

python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -e '.[dev]'
pytest
ruff check .

Bug reports and reproducible measurements are welcome. Remove private audio before attaching a run. See CONTRIBUTING.md.
