feat(join): accept Appwrite table IDs as join aliases - #1039
Conversation
A joined column is selected as "<alias>.<column>". PostgreSQL silently cuts
a label to 63 bytes, so a 36-character table ID with a 36-character key came
back under a truncated name and the value read as null. Defaulting the alias
to the table ID makes such labels routine for custom IDs. A label longer than
the engine keeps is now written as the alias's position ("$0.<column>"),
which cannot clash with an alias since aliases cannot hold "$", and
remapRow() reads it back under the alias for find() and getDocument().
The projection also quotes the alias and column through quote() instead of
wrapping filter()ed names in the quote character by hand, so every alias
that reaches SQL is escaped by the one function that owns it.

Appwrite IDs from ID::unique() are hex and usually start with a digit, and
custom IDs may hold hyphens, so defaulting a join's alias to its table ID
was refused for most console-created tables. The alias pattern is now
Appwrite's ID charset without ".", which stays banned because it separates
an alias from its column: /^[A-Za-z0-9_][A-Za-z0-9_-]*$/, at most 63
characters, the identifier length PostgreSQL keeps.
The audit found every place an alias reaches SQL quoted through the
adapter's or builder's quote() (or AllowNull::quote(), which escapes the
quote character the same way): FROM/JOIN ... AS, alias.column in select,
where, order, group, having and ON, cursors, the full outer join emulation,
the SQLite and PostgreSQL search and vector paths, tenant and permission
conditions. One check was stricter than the quoting it guarded: the
permission subquery validated its document column ("<alias>._uid") with the
pattern for the columns it interpolates bare, so a digit-leading alias threw
"Invalid column name" (a 500) on any join to a document-security table. The
document column is quoted, so it is now held to the quoted-identifier
pattern; the bare permission columns keep the strict one.
The reserved main alias, relationship-key and duplicate checks are unchanged.
The aggregate alias pattern stays as it is: aggregate aliases are names the
caller writes, never derived from IDs.

- Line 4218: Update the sum-column lookup in sum() to pass the ordered join
aliases to rowsColumn() and use the same joinLabel encoding as the projection,
so distinct sums reference the encoded joined-column label in the derived table
built by rowsBuilder().
- Line 4244: Update joinLabel() to use a reversible encoding that includes the
column position whenever the generated label exceeds static::MAX_LABEL_LENGTH,
keeping the encoded label within that byte limit. Update remapRow() to recognize
and decode the encoding so it restores the original alias and column correctly.

A label past the engine's limit was written as "$<alias position>.<column>", which still overflowed PostgreSQL's 63 bytes for a column of 61 or more characters. A distinct sum over such a column also referenced the plain "alias.column" in its derived table, where the column had the encoded label. The over-long label is now "$join_<md5 of the label>" (38 bytes). A static map records the label each digest stands for; a digest names one label for good, so the map is shared safely and only grows with the joined columns a process reads. remapRow() reads it back with no positions to thread through, and the sum column goes through the same joinLabel(). Why
8.3.6 defaults a join's alias to the joined table ID, but the alias pattern was
/^[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*$/. Appwrite IDs fromID::unique()are hex, and about 10 in 16 start with a digit. Custom IDs may also hold-. So the default was refused for most console-created tables.Audit: where a join alias reaches SQL
Every site goes through an escaping quote: the builder's
quote(), the adapter'squote(), orAllowNull::quote(). Each of these doubles the quote character and quotes every dot-separated segment. The sites:FROM/JOIN … AS, andalias.columnin select, where, order, group, having and ON.$foj_*), and the SQLite LIKE/FTS and PostgreSQL vector paths.Tenant\Filter::joined(),range()), and permission conditions (AllowNull::wrap(), and the permission subquery's document column).decodeJoins, joinedRows, remapRow) never reaches SQL.What changed:
mapSelectionsToColumns()wrappedfilter()ed names in the quote character by hand. It was safe, becausefilter()strips everything outside[A-Za-z0-9_-], but it wasn't the escaping function. It now usesquote(), so every alias that reaches SQL goes through it.Permission\Filterheld its quoted document column (<alias>._uid) to the pattern meant for the columns it interpolates bare. That pattern requires a leading letter, so a digit-leading alias threwInvalidArgumentException: Invalid column name: 6ad1…._uidon any join to a document-security table. In Appwrite that's a 500. The document column now uses the quoted-identifier pattern. The bare columns keep the strict one."<alias>.<column>", so a 36-character table ID with a 36-character key came back truncated, and the value read as null, silently. This happens on 8.3.6 with any long alias, explicit or defaulted. A label past the engine's limit (63 on PostgreSQL, 256 on MariaDB/MySQL) is now written as$join_<md5 of alias.column>(38 bytes). Aliases can't hold$, so it can't clash. A static map records the label each digest stands for. A digest names one label for good, so the map is safe to share and only grows with the joined columns a process reads.remapRow()restores the label forfind()andgetDocument(), and a distinctsum()over the joined column uses the same label in its derived table (review fix, 1945a6a).Pattern
/^[A-Za-z_][A-Za-z0-9_]*$//^[A-Za-z0-9_][A-Za-z0-9_-]*$/(Appwrite's ID charset without.)Join::MAX_ALIAS_LENGTH): PostgreSQL folds longer identifiers, so two such aliases could read as one. Appwrite IDs max out at 36..alias.column)-table_main(any case), relationship key, duplicate (case-insensitive)The aggregate alias pattern is unchanged. Aggregate aliases are names the caller writes, never derived from IDs. They are output labels referenced by name in HAVING/ORDER, so I didn't widen that surface without a need.
