Production regression (cloud 1.51.0, database 8.3.0)

Database 7.x left null in a stored index's attributes when an attribute that index covered was deleted, and the engine dropped that column from the physical index. Database 8.x decodes stored indexes through Index::fromDocument(), which refused any non-string attribute with Index attributes must be strings. Because Collection::fromDocument() decodes every index on each metadata load, one such index makes the whole collection unreadable.

Seen on production since the 1.51.0 rollout:

  • console teams, index _key_billingPlan, attributes [null]: every POST /v1/organizations fails with 500
  • a customer collection with a fulltext index, attributes [null]: every documents list returns 500
  • a customer collection with a unique index, attributes ["playId", null]: every rows list returns 500

Fix

Index::fromDocument() (stored metadata) drops null attributes, together with the lengths and orders at the same positions, so the index reads as covering the attributes it still has, matching the physical index. Index::fromArray() (caller input) still refuses non-string attributes.

Regression tests

Test origin/main this PR
LegacyDroppedAttributeIndexTest::testAFulltextIndexWhoseOnlyAttributeWasDeletedIsReadWithNoAttributes (production shape [null]) error: Index attributes must be strings pass
::testAUniqueIndexKeepsTheAttributesItStillCoversWithTheirLengthsAndOrders (production shape ["playId", null]) error pass
::testADroppedAttributeBetweenOthersKeepsEachLengthAndOrderAtItsAttribute (['a', null, 'c'] with lengths and orders) error pass
::testACollectionHoldingSuchAnIndexIsRead (Collection::fromDocument, the path in the production stack) error pass
::testAnIndexDefinedByACallerStillRefusesAnAttributeThatIsNotAString (fromArray stays strict) pass pass

Pint, PHPStan and the tests/unit/Indexes suite (52 tests) pass locally.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed how indexes with deleted attributes are read. Remaining attributes keep their corresponding lengths and orders, and indexes with no remaining attributes can be read.
    • Preserved validation for indexes defined with non-string attributes.

7.x left null in a stored index's attributes when an attribute it covered was
deleted, and the engine dropped that column from the index. 8.x refused such
metadata with 'Index attributes must be strings', so every read of the
collection failed. On production that made a console teams index
(_key_billingPlan, [null]) fail organization creation, and two customer
collections unreadable.

Index::fromDocument() now drops null attributes from stored metadata together
with the lengths and orders at their positions. Index::fromArray(), which takes
caller input, still refuses them.

📝 Walkthrough

Index::fromDocument() filters null attribute placeholders before hydrating stored indexes. It also filters corresponding lengths and orders when their arrays match the original attribute count. Tests cover index and collection reads, plus rejection of caller-supplied non-string attributes.

Index::fromDocument() removes null attribute placeholders. It filters lengths and orders by the same positions when their arrays match the original attribute count. Tests cover fulltext and unique indexes, collection reads, and continued rejection of non-string attributes passed to Index::fromArray().

Some legacy indexes may expose incorrect length or order metadata after a deleted attribute is filtered. The affected shapes are bounded, but positional filtering should be corrected.

Filter companion arrays by retained attribute positions regardless of their count.

The stored format permits companion arrays shorter than the attribute list. For example, attributes = ['a', null, 'c'] and lengths = [10, 20] uses positional entries. The helper removes the null attribute but leaves lengths unchanged because its count differs from the original attribute count. The value 20 then attaches to c instead of the deleted attribute. Apply the same filtering to every array companion.

Suggested fix
-        $alongside = static fn (mixed $values): mixed => \is_array($values) && \count($values) === \count($attributes)
-            ? \array_values(\array_intersect_key($values, $kept))
-            : $values;
+        $alongside = static fn (mixed $values): mixed => \is_array($values)
+            ? \array_values(\array_intersect_key($values, $kept))
+            : $values;
