fix(aggregates): refuse a floating aggregate that overflows a double - #1018
Conversation
MariaDB and MySQL hold a DOUBLE sum or average that overflowed as infinity but write it as `0` over the text protocol, so aggregate() answered "0" for a sum of two 1e308 readings. MariaDB's STDDEV also turns an infinite or undefined variance into DBL_MAX or NULL, and its VARIANCE goes out as `0`. SQLite answers infinity outright. PostgreSQL alone raised its own range error. The MariaDB and MySQL builders compile SUM, AVG and the variance aggregates through `+ 0`, and STDDEV as SQRT(variance + 0): the addition runs the engine's float range check, which raises error 1690 for a value that is not finite. The adapter already maps 1690 to Exception\Limit, as for stddev. An unaliased aggregate keeps the column name the engine gave it. aggregate() refuses a non-finite sum, average, deviation or variance with the same Limit error, which covers SQLite. The statement count() and sum() write out instead of building now takes its aggregate from the dialect builder, so it stays the statement the builder makes, and sum() raises the same error on MariaDB and MySQL. MariaDB and MySQL write a large double sum with an exponent and no decimal point, such as `1e308`, and sumOf() cast every value without a point to an integer, so sum() answered PHP_INT_MAX for it. A DECIMAL sum of big integers past the range of an integer was clamped the same way. 7.4.2 handed the string back and let the return type convert it, which kept the double. The value is now converted as PHP converts any numeric string: an integer when it is one, a double otherwise. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

sum() answered 0 for a double sum past the range of a double on SQLite when fetches are stringified: the engine sends `INF`, which the new sumOf() reads as no number and turns into 0. 7.4.2 handed the value back as it was. It returned INF on SQLite and failed its int|float return type on `INF`. MongoDB, Memory and Redis return INF from sum(), on 7.4.2 as on 8.x. sumOf() reads SQLite's `INF`, `-INF` and `NAN` as the doubles they name. Database::sum() refuses a non-finite sum from any adapter with the same Exception\Limit that MariaDB, MySQL and PostgreSQL raise, so sum() agrees with aggregate(). assertRepresentable() turned a non-finite aggregate value into database_query_out_of_range because the engines answered an overflowed floating aggregate with 0, INF or DBL_MAX. utopia-php/database#1018 and appwrite#1019 refuse it in aggregate() with Exception\Limit on every adapter, which the list already maps to the same 400. The overflow test now expects the 400 for the sum on every adapter, not only PostgreSQL, and a 0 when an engine answers the deviation of two equal values. Problem
Staging QA of the query-lib migration found that a floating aggregate past the range of a double returns a wrong number instead of an error. On MariaDB, a
doublecolumn with two rows of1e308answersaggregate([sum])andaggregate([avg])with"0". One row correctly answers1e308, andstddevraises error 1690, which the adapter already maps toException\Limit.aggregate()is new in 8.x, so this blocks the release.Root cause of the 0
The
0comes from the engine, not from PDO or the adapter's casting. MariaDB and MySQL hold the overflowed sum as infinity (SUM(d) > 1e308is true andSUM(d) = 0is false on the same rows). The text protocol then writes an infinite DOUBLE as0, becausemy_gcvt()prints0onDTOA_OVERFLOW. The client only ever receives the string"0".AVGisSUM / COUNT, so it overflows the same way.Reproduced against
mariadb:10.11andmysql:8.0.43:The variance aggregates are worse on MariaDB.
VAR_POPandVAR_SAMPgo out as0, andSTDDEVturns an infinite variance intoDBL_MAXand an undefined one intoNULL. For{1e308, -1e308, 0},STDDEV_POPanswersNULL. MySQL raises 1690 for the variance aggregates but not forSUMorAVG.The other engines differ. SQLite answers
INF, which comes back as the floatINFor the string"INF"depending onATTR_STRINGIFY_FETCHES. PostgreSQL already raises22003 value out of range: overflow, which maps toLimit.sum()has the same problem on SQLite with stringified fetches. The engine sendsINF, and the newsumOf()reads that as no number and returns0. 7.4.2 handed the value back unchanged. MongoDB, Memory and Redis returnINFfromsum().A second bug sits in the same path.
sumOf()cast every value without a decimal point to an integer, sosum()answeredPHP_INT_MAXfor a single1e308row, which MariaDB writes as1e308. It did the same to a DECIMAL sum pastPHP_INT_MAX. 7.4.2 handed the string to theint|floatreturn type, which kept the double, so this is a regression too.Fix
Builder\RaisesFloatOverflow):SUM,AVG,VARIANCE,VAR_POPandVAR_SAMPcompile as<aggregate> + 0, andSTDDEV*compiles asSQRT(<variance> + 0). The addition runs the engine's own float range check (check_float_overflow), which raises error 1690 for a value that is not finite.processExceptionalready maps 1690 toException\Limit, the same as for stddev. An unaliased aggregate is aliased to the text the engine would have named it with, so its column name does not change.count()andsum()write their fast-path statement out by hand. That statement now takes its aggregate from the dialect builder, so it stays the statement the builder makes andsum()raises the same error.Database::aggregate()refuses a non-finite sum, average, deviation or variance with the sameLimiterror. This covers SQLite.sumOf()converts the engine's value the way PHP converts any numeric string: an integer when it is one and a double otherwise. It reads SQLite'sINF,-INFandNANas the doubles they name.Database::sum()refuses a non-finite sum from any adapter with the sameLimiterror, sosum()agrees withaggregate().PostgreSQL needs no change. An aggregate now either answers the correct value or raises
Exception\Limit, on every adapter that supports aggregations. Consumers mapLimitto a 400.Tests
Each new test fails without the fix:
