What

forkd doctor becomes a readiness GATE, not just a human diagnostic. A cpu-sbx node is ready to serve sandboxes only when every blocking check is green AND the node can actually fork.

  • --json: machine-readable {"ready":bool,"checks":[…]}; exit code is the gate (0 = no FAIL; WARN never blocks).
  • --expected-fc-version V: exact pin compare. Snapshot-family rule: restore only on the exact FC version × CPU family × guest kernel — '>=1.10' is too loose for a homogeneous pool. A NEWER version also fails a pin.
  • --min-netns N: fan-out >1 needs one forkd-child-* netns per concurrent child; fewer = FAIL.
  • reflink workdir check (always on): per-child rootfs backing (PR feat(vmm): give every restored child its own rootfs backing deeplethe/forkd#321) is FICLONE on XFS (~6 ms/fork) but a full stream copy on ext4 (~265 s/fork for a 24G base — a pool built that way cannot fork). Probes ioctl(FICLONE) in TMPDIR.
  • --smoke-tag TAG [--smoke-port P]: REST-spawn ONE sandbox through the live daemon (per_child_netns), optionally TCP-probe envd (:49983) from inside the child netns (ip netns exec, never in-process), retry 10 s for envd/socat bind lag, always delete. Proves restore+fork e2e.
  • arp gc_thresh check (WARN): per-child netns each carry an ARP neighbor table; defaults 128/512/1024 overflow under n~100 REST fan-out — observed live on forkd-p0-1 (POST stalls >55 s, neighbour: arp_cache: neighbor table overflow! in dmesg).

Live evidence (forkd-p0-1, FC v1.12.0, envd-base snapshot)

  • doctor --json → ready:true, exit 0, 20 checks pass.
  • reflink: TMPDIR on XFS → pass (FICLONE works); TMPDIR on ext4 → FAIL (ready:false).
  • FC pin: --expected-fc-version v1.13.0 on a v1.12.0 host → FAIL (ready:false); v1.12.0 → pass.
  • netns floor: 120 >= 100 → pass.
  • smoke spawn: envd answered 204 from inside the child netns in 9.5 ms (probe-via-netns verified with curl first; the in-Rust path is the same mechanism).
  • arp gc_thresh on forkd-p0-1 → WARN (defaults), matching the overflow observed in dmesg.

Tests

Unit tests for netns floor, warn-does-not-block/fail-does, FC-pin exact-match parse (Linux cfg-gated, run in CI + on the node). cargo check + cargo clippy clean (one pre-existing forkd-vmm warning).

Consumers

skypilot-controller PR renders forkd doctor --json … as the cpu-sbx worker readiness gate (see s3-03 lane). ForkdSubstrate (s3-05) and the autoscaler (s3-04) rely on this seam: doctor exit 0 = node ready.

/cc lane s3-01 (fan-out fix, PR #2) — this branch is based on urun/phase0-fork AFTER your controller change is NOT included; it sits on 2e3f9ea.

…r, reflink workdir probe, REST smoke spawn

forkd doctor today is a human diagnostic (18 checks, glyph report). A
serving pool needs a GATE: a cpu-sbx node is ready only when every
blocking check is green AND the node can actually fork.

- --json: machine-readable {ready, checks[]} output; exit code is
the gate (0 = no FAIL). WARN never blocks, same as the human path.
- --expected-fc-version: exact pin compare (snapshot-family rule:
  restore only on the exact FC version x CPU family x guest kernel;
'>=1.10' is too loose for a homogeneous pool).
- --min-netns N: fan-out >1 needs one forkd-child-* netns per
  concurrent child; fewer = FAIL.
- reflink workdir check (new, always on): per-child rootfs backing
(PR deeplethe#321) is FICLONE on XFS (~6 ms/fork) but a full stream copy on
  ext4 (~265 s/fork for a 24G base). Probes ioctl(FICLONE) in TMPDIR.
- --smoke-tag TAG [--smoke-port P]: REST-spawn one sandbox through
the live daemon (per_child_netns), optionally TCP-probe envd
  (:49983), always delete. Proves restore+fork e2e.

tempfile moves dev->runtime deps (doctor uses it on the probe path).
The guest of a per-child-netns sandbox lives at 10.42.0.2 INSIDE its
netns; from the root netns the probe got 'No route to host'. Probe
now setns()es via 'ip netns exec' in a helper child (never in-process)
and retries for 10s to cover envd/socat bind lag — same contract as
lane-02's init-loop.sh. Non-Linux gets a plain-connect stub.
Also derive Default for DoctorOpts (clippy derivable_impls).
…ns pools

Each per-child netns carries its own ARP neighbor table. The Linux
defaults (gc_thresh1/2/3 = 128/512/1024) overflow once a pool does
n~100 REST fan-out spawns: every subsequent spawn then stalls in
guest-net bring-up with 'neighbour: arp_cache: neighbor table
overflow!' in dmesg (observed live on the Phase 0 C3 node, forkd-p0-1:
POST /v1/sandboxes >55s stall while GETs stayed instant).

WARN, not FAIL: a fresh node passes until it fans out hard, and the
fix is one sysctl — but a serving pool must raise it at bootstrap.

📝 Summary

Added

  • Added machine-readable readiness output with forkd doctor --json. The output reports ready and individual checks. FAIL checks block readiness; WARN checks do not.
  • Added --expected-fc-version for exact Firecracker version matching and --min-netns for a minimum child network namespace count.
  • Added a TMPDIR reflink check and an ARP neighbor-table threshold warning.
  • Added --smoke-tag to test sandbox creation through the live daemon and delete the sandbox afterward. The optional --smoke-port probes envd from the child network namespace.

📝 Summary

Walkthrough

forkd doctor adds configurable readiness checks, JSON output, and an optional sandbox smoke test. The command can check host thresholds, enforce a minimum netns count, compare an exact Firecracker version token, and probe sandbox spawning and guest TCP reachability.

Changes

Doctor readiness and smoke checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Doctor options and reporting
crates/forkd-cli/src/doctor.rs, crates/forkd-cli/src/main.rs
forkd doctor accepts JSON, version-pin, netns-floor, and smoke-test options. The command passes them to run_with. JSON output includes overall readiness and per-check results.
Host readiness checks
crates/forkd-cli/src/doctor.rs, crates/forkd-cli/Cargo.toml
The doctor adds ARP threshold, optional netns-floor, and temporary-directory reflink checks. A supplied Firecracker version must match exactly. Tests cover netns outcomes, readiness gating, and version matching.
Sandbox smoke test
crates/forkd-cli/src/doctor.rs
The optional check spawns a sandbox through the daemon. If a guest port is set, it retries a TCP probe for up to 10 seconds. It attempts sandbox deletion after probing or when no port is set.

Assert the serialized readiness value.

json_gate_warn_does_not_block_but_fail_does never calls print_json or checks JSON. It only repeats the FAIL predicate, so it passes if JSON ready becomes true for a failing check. Extract the JSON construction into a helper and assert its ready field.

Exercise the production exact-pin comparison.

fc_version_pin_is_exact_string_match duplicates token extraction and never calls check_firecracker_version. Extract the pinned comparison into a pure evaluate_fc_version(first_line, expected) -> Check helper, call it from production, and test a newer version against an older pin.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Build the spawn body with serde_json::json! instead of string interpolation.

tag comes from --smoke-tag and is inserted into the JSON without escaping. A tag that contains " or \ produces malformed JSON. A tag can also inject extra fields, for example x","n":1000,"memory_limit_mib":1. The daemon rejects unsafe tags only after it parses the body. Injected fields therefore reach the request struct. Use the same pattern as snapshot_diff_cmd in crates/forkd-cli/src/main.rs.

Fail the smoke check when cleanup fails.

After a successful spawn, both smoke paths pass Check::pass(...) to the cleanup closure. The closure discards the DELETE result, so a transport error or non-success response can still produce PASS. A transport error can leave the sandbox running, and a server error can leave daemon state inconsistent.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Add a timeout to the in-netns probe, and do not use bash -c with an interpolated address.

exec 3<>/dev/tcp/... has no connect timeout. If the guest drops SYNs, each attempt waits for the kernel's TCP SYN retry limit, which is about two minutes. The 10 s deadline is checked only between attempts. As a result, forkd doctor can block a readiness gate for minutes instead of 10 s. addr currently comes from the daemon's guest_addr and passes through SocketAddr parsing, so command injection is limited in practice. Even so, a direct timeout command avoids the shell. Use timeout 3 bash -c ... with positional arguments, or a helper such as nc -z -w 3 host port.

Review comment at @crates/forkd-cli/src/doctor.rs around lines 988 - 996:
Update the in-netns probe command in the function containing this
`Command::new("ip")` call to enforce a 3-second connection timeout and avoid
interpolating `addr` into shell code. Pass the parsed socket address’s host and
port as positional arguments to the shell, preserving the existing probe result
behavior.

…ns probe, assert serialized readiness

CodeRabbit PR#3:
- smoke spawn body built with serde_json::json! (a --smoke-tag with
quotes/backslashes previously produced malformed JSON and could
  inject extra fields like n/memory_limit_mib).
- the in-netns TCP probe is argv-wrapped in `timeout 3` (the kernel's
SYN retry window is ~2 min; without the cap a dropped-SYN guest
blocked the readiness gate for minutes past the 10 s deadline) and
the address is passed as a positional parameter ($1), never
  interpolated into the shell text.
- json gate test asserts the serialized {"ready":…} value (via the
extracted json_output helper) instead of re-testing the predicate.
A leaked probe sandbox on a 'passing' node defeats the gate: it holds
a netns and a firecracker slot. The cleanup closure now checks the
DELETE result and downgrades the Check to fail on transport error or
non-2xx.
…ev/tcp/HOST/PORT

'exec 3<>/dev/tcp/10.42.0.2:49983' is not valid bash /dev/tcp syntax;
it fails with 'No such file or directory' even when the guest answers.
Live diagnosis on forkd-p0-1: colon form always fails, slash form
(/dev/tcp/10.42.0.2/49983) connects in the same child. The address is
a parse-validated SocketAddr, so building the probe text from it
carries no injection surface.
