perf(replicad)!: Return meshes as typed arrays copied out of the WASM heap - #4
Conversation
… heap mesh() and meshEdges() copied each extractor buffer into a plain array with Array.from, element by element. A JS array holds each number in at least 8 bytes, against 4 in the heap, and consumers convert it straight back into a typed array for rendering or glTF. Copy each buffer with one slice() instead. The result is still a copy, so a later memory.grow() cannot detach it. vertices, normals and lines are Float32Array and triangles is Uint32Array. The threejs helper accepts both plain and typed arrays. BREAKING CHANGE: ShapeMesh and ShapeEdgeMesh fields are typed arrays instead of number[]. Three.js r155 BufferAttribute Uint32BufferAttribute constructor source
💡 Result:
In **Three.js r155**, `Uint32BufferAttribute` is defined in `src/core/BufferAttribute.js`:
```js
class Uint32BufferAttribute extends BufferAttribute {
constructor( array, itemSize, normalized ) {
super( new Uint32Array( array ), itemSize, normalized );
}
}
```
It converts the input to a `Uint32Array` and passes it, along with `itemSize` and `normalized`, to `BufferAttribute`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/mrdoob/three.js/r155/src/core/BufferAttribute.js))

Reuse Uint32Array indices in BufferAttribute.
mesh() already returns an independent array from heap.slice(). The mesh-to-syncFaces path does not mutate that array. In Three.js r155, the minimum declared peer version, Uint32BufferAttribute creates new Uint32Array(array), so this branch copies about 24 MB for two million triangles on every sync.
Use BufferAttribute for Uint32Array inputs. Keep Uint32BufferAttribute for other array-like inputs.

Leaving this as is. The helper only feeds the studio and example app, and Tau doesn't use it. The extra index copy is about 4 bytes per index, on a path that used to copy a whole plain array anyway, so this change already comes out well ahead.

@rifont Understood. Thanks for the context. Keeping the copy is a reasonable trade-off for the studio and example app. No change is needed for this PR.

Learning: In taucad/replicad, packages/replicad-threejs-helper serves the studio and example app; Tau does not use it. The extra Uint32BufferAttribute index copy in syncFaces is an accepted performance trade-off for these consumers.

Each number took at least 8 bytes instead of 4. The kernel then turned those arrays straight back into `Float32Array`s to write the GLB. Instanced copies spread the prototype mesh out of the heap (`[...heap.subarray()]`) and built each instance with `push`. After: meshes stay in typed arrays from the heap to the glTF writer. Measured in Node on buffers of the same shape (one vertex per triangle), peak memory during extraction drops from 18 to 5 MB at 137k triangles (the planetary gear), from 83 to 14 MB at the 400k phone preview cap, and from 278 to 72 MB at the 2M desktop cap. Extraction time drops from 95 ms to 3 ms, 560 ms to 9 ms and 2.4 s to 40 ms. These figures come from a standalone measurement, not a re-run of the memory harness. Model code that calls `shape.mesh()` now gets typed arrays as well. Index access, `.length` and iteration behave the same, but `push` and `concat` no longer exist on the result. **How.** Bumps `replicad` to `@taulabs/replicad@1.1.0-taulabs.1` (taucad/replicad#4 and #5), whose `ShapeMesh` and `ShapeEdgeMesh` fields are `Float32Array` and `Uint32Array` copies made with one `slice()`. `GeometryReplicad` carries those types. `tessellation-instancing.ts` reads the prototype with typed `slice()`s, kept as `Float64Array` so each instance transform still rounds once and produces the same bytes. It writes instance positions, normals and triangles into typed arrays. Empty geometries use empty typed arrays. The kernel's declared builtin package version and the generated Replicad API reference (`extract-replicad`, `generate-bundles`) are updated to match. Test: `replicad-tessellation.test.ts` › *keeps every tessellated mesh in typed arrays, instanced copies included* renders a box and an instanced copy with instancing on. It was red on the old dependency (`expected [ +0, +0, +0, … ] to be an instance of Float32Array`) and is green now. `nx run-many -t test typecheck lint -p replicad api-extractor` passes: 264 replicad tests and 408 api-extractor tests. --- _Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code/session_01HAP3VxrBV4dsXzNq8KCPTP)_ <!-- This is an auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> ## Summary by CodeRabbit * **New Features** * Replicad mesh data is now returned as typed arrays, including for instanced geometry. * **Performance** * Mesh extraction uses less peak memory and completes faster. * **Bug Fixes** * Mirrored geometry preserves the correct triangle winding when transformed. <!-- end of auto-generated comment: release notes by coderabbit.ai --> --------- Co-authored-by: Claude <noreply@anthropic.com>
Before:
mesh()andmeshEdges()returnednumber[]. Each extractor buffer was copied out of the WASM heap withArray.from, one element at a time, so every number took at least 8 bytes instead of 4. Consumers such as Tau then converted the arrays straight back into typed arrays for rendering or glTF.After:
vertices,normalsandlinesareFloat32ArrayandtrianglesisUint32Array, each copied out of the heap with oneslice(). They are still copies, so a latermemory.grow()cannot detach them.How.
extractFromPointerreturnsheap.slice(...)typed to the heap it reads. TheShapeMeshandShapeEdgeMeshtypes change to match, which is a breaking change, so the package version goes to2.0.0-taulabs.0.replicad-threejs-helperaccepts plain or typed arrays and wraps a typed index in aUint32BufferAttribute, becausesetIndexonly converts plain arrays.Expected gain, measured in Node on buffers of the same shape (one vertex per triangle): extraction peak memory drops from 18 to 5 MB at 137k triangles, from 83 to 14 MB at 400k, and from 278 to 72 MB at 2M. Test:

It was red first (expected [ Array(72) ] to be an instance of Float32Array) and is green now.pnpm prepare-packages,pnpm test(94 tests in replicad),pnpm typecheck, and the studio and example-app builds all pass locally.Generated by Claude Code
