Summary

Google replaced Gemini CLI with Antigravity CLI (agy), and Gemini CLI stopped serving requests for Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers and free users on June 18, 2026. agy support landed in #27; this PR completes the migration by dropping gemini as a built-in engine.

  • Remove gemini from config.DefaultEngineArgs and from the autodetect candidate list (now claude → agy → codex)
  • engine = "gemini" without explicit engines.gemini.args now fails with a migration hint pointing at agy, instead of silently running bare gemini with the prompt on stdin
  • Gemini CLI can still be used by setting engines.gemini.args explicitly
  • Update README engine docs and the deprecation note
  • Switch scripts/release-check.sh from gemini to agy

Breaking change

engine = "gemini" without explicit args now errors. Switch to engine = "agy", or set engines.gemini.args.

Test plan

  • mise run test passes
  • mise run lint passes (0 issues)
  • New/updated tests: gemini is not autodetected, is absent from DefaultEngineArgs, errors without explicit args, and still works with explicit args
  • Added regression coverage that autodetect prefers agy over codex

Gemini CLI was replaced by Antigravity CLI (agy), and stopped
serving requests on June 18, 2026. Remove gemini from built-in
engine arguments and autodetection. Fail with a clear migration
hint when engine="gemini" is used without explicit args.

Users should update their configuration to use engine="agy".

BREAKING CHANGE: engine="gemini" without explicit args now fails
with a migration hint. Use engine="agy" instead, or set
engines.gemini.args explicitly to continue using Gemini CLI.

P2 Badge Reject Gemini entries that omit args

When a config contains engine = "gemini" and an empty [engines.gemini] table, TOML decoding creates a map entry whose Args is nil, so the earlier cfg.Engines[name] branch returns successfully before this migration guard is reached. In that scenario the removed built-in still runs as bare gemini with the prompt on stdin instead of producing the documented migration error; require the Gemini entry to contain an explicit args value before allowing it to bypass this guard.
