feat(provider)!: admit digest state and type its refusals - #364
A digest's state and output no longer escape the operation's accounting: storage is admitted before it exists, allocation can fail, and the charge lasts as long as the state.
A refusal keeps its typed cause to the terminal result and is never reported as an unsupported algorithm, a digest mismatch or a per-Reference finding.
Changes
CryptoProvider::begin_digest and digest receive the operation's Memory; charged_digest_state is the fallible, charged placement a provider uses.
DigestState::finalize writes to an inline buffer, so no output allocation exists.
ProviderError::Resource carries the cause. Sessions, CMS, XAdES and detached payloads charge the caller's execution; plain signing and verification, which hold one state per Reference, use a ceiling-free account that still reports an allocator refusal.
A refusal or a spent operation resource limit in a Manifest Reference ends the operation with its typed cause instead of a per-Reference status, and detached completion returns it as well as recording it in the evidence.
A detached digest admits its finalization work first.
At an X509Digest selector a configured ceiling stays a policy limit, and an allocator refusal stays the provider's cause.
One DigestOutput replaces the copies in CMS and XAdES.
A PKCS#11 result passes through the buffer cryptoki allocates: its width is admitted with the state, before the token operation starts, but that allocation cannot report a refusal.
Tests, lints, formatting, doc tests and the PKCS#11 contract pass on macOS, with the no_std build linted; CI covers Linux, Windows and the remaining gates.
BREAKING CHANGE: CryptoProvider::begin_digest and digest take a Memory, DigestState::finalize writes to a caller buffer, compute_digest_with_provider takes a Memory and returns DigestOutput, and a spent operation resource limit in a Manifest Reference now fails verify() instead of producing ReferencePolicyViolation.
Digest operations now account for memory and work usage, with resource limits reported consistently when digest state cannot be created or an operation exceeds its budget.
Resource-limit failures during Manifest verification now stop the overall verification with an error rather than appearing as individual Reference results. Other Reference-specific failures remain available as per-Reference results.
Detached payload verification now propagates resource refusals instead of completing evidence as if processing succeeded.
Documentation
Clarified digest memory accounting and how operation-wide resource limits affect Manifest verification.
- begin_digest receives the operation's Memory; charged_digest_state admits
the whole block first, allocates fallibly and keeps the charge for the
life of the state
- finalize writes to an inline buffer, so no output allocation exists
- ProviderError::Resource carries a refusal unchanged to the terminal
result; sessions, CMS, XAdES and detached payloads charge the caller's
execution
- A refusal in a Manifest Reference ends the operation instead of reading
as an invalid Reference with more work after it
- One DigestOutput replaces the copies in CMS and XAdES
BREAKING CHANGE: CryptoProvider::begin_digest and digest take a Memory,
DigestState::finalize writes to a caller buffer, and
compute_digest_with_provider takes a Memory and returns DigestOutput.

Walkthrough
Digest providers now accept memory accounts, retain state reservations, and finalize into fixed-capacity output. XMLDSig, CMS, XAdES, and detached verification use the updated contract. Selected resource refusals now propagate through Manifest and detached verification paths as errors.

Digest provider methods now accept memory accounts. Digest states retain memory reservations and finalize into fixed-capacity output. The digest API checks reported output width against the algorithm’s expected width.
Digest sessions and XML digest callers pass memory and work accounts through digest creation. CMS and XAdES use the shared DigestOutput; transform reference digests store that type instead of Vec<u8>.
Manifest evaluation and detached Signature revalidation propagate selected shared-execution and provider resource errors. Selector digest handling routes limit and work refusals through the session resource handler. Tests cover these error paths.
Fuzz targets, test providers, integration tests, and documentation use or describe the memory-aware digest API. Tests check output comparisons, memory limits, and release of accounted memory.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(provider)!: admit digest state and type its refusals" names the main change: the provider digest boundary now takes a memory account for state creation and output, and resource refusals keep a typed cause (ProviderError::Resource). The changeset matches this. The title uses the conventional-commit form and the breaking marker, which fits the breaking API changes described in the objectives. It does not mention the Manifest Reference termination change, but it does not need to cover every detail.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changed provider, session, verification, detached-payload, CMS, XAdES, documentation, fuzz, and test code supports issue #286. API updates adapt callers to the required Memory and buffer-based digest contract. Terminal Manifest and detached error handling implements typed refusal propagation. Shared DigestOutput reuse removes duplicate internal representations. No unrelated change is established.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #286 has coding and test requirements. The PR implements the shared memory-aware digest path, inline DigestOutput, retained state reservations, typed ProviderError::Resource propagation, terminal Manifest handling, detached propagation, and tests for creation refusal, lifetime, chunk equivalence, and independent processing. The PKCS#11 path remains non-compliant. Pkcs11Digest::finalize receives a digest allocated by cryptoki, and begin_digest reserves algorithm.output_len() before the token operation. The issue requires every reachable allocation to be fallible or allocation-free, and it rejects a reservation around an allocation that cannot report refusal. The PR documentation explicitly states that this PKCS#11 allocation cannot report refusal. The digest facade checks the advertised capability before direct incremental dispatch, so no buffered fallback is shown in the reviewed code.
Resolution
Make PKCS#11 result storage satisfy the #286 allocation contract with a fallible result path or an allocation-free provider/module interface. Preserve any refusal as typed ProviderError::Resource before token work. Add tests for that path. If #286 intentionally excludes module-allocated PKCS#11 result storage, obtain an issue update and add a contract test that records the exclusion and the pre-operation width admission.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 28.30% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 53 functions across 30 files. Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Drop ends an abandoned operation with the same digest_final that allocates
the result buffer, so a refusal at finalization caused the very allocation
it refused. The width is admitted before digest_init and held for the life
of the state. The regression test finishes on an account of exactly that
size and leaves the session usable after a refusal.

An operation limit says nothing about the Reference that reached it, yet a
Manifest Reference reported it as a policy violation and the cause was lost.
It now ends the operation with the typed limit, as on the SignedInfo path and
at Manifest XPath parsing. The separate check for an already spent
canonicalization budget is gone: exhaustion surfaces where the bytes are
charged, so a Reference needing none is not refused.
A sweep over every ceiling through verify() carries the regression, and the
existing exhaustion test now expects the typed limit; later References still
do not run.
BREAKING CHANGE: a spent operation resource limit in a Manifest Reference
fails verify() instead of producing ReferencePolicyViolation.
Manifest processing now ends with the typed limit, but the detached path did
not count it as a spent ceiling: the evidence held the refusal while finish
returned Ok. A policy resource limit is returned to the caller as well. A
sweep over every ceiling carries the regression.
