Summary

ClientAddressLayer read the peer only from axum's ConnectInfo, so a service mounted on a tonic server got Resolution::Unavailable even behind a trusted proxy. The layer now falls back to tonic's TcpConnectInfo.

Testing

the_layer_reads_the_peer_a_tonic_server_records failed before the change with Unavailable and passes now; the 43 client address and config tests pass.

Closes #157

ClientAddressLayer read only axum's ConnectInfo, so a service mounted
on a tonic server got an unresolved address even behind a trusted
proxy. The layer now falls back to TcpConnectInfo.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Client address resolution can now use the remote peer address provided by a tonic server when the usual connection address is unavailable. If neither source provides a peer address, resolution continues without one.
    • Forwarded client addresses continue to be resolved when the connection peer is trusted, preserving the remote peer address alongside the forwarded address.

ClientAddressLayer now reads tonic’s TcpConnectInfo remote address when axum’s ConnectInfo is absent. An async test checks forwarded address resolution with a tonic peer.

Changes: Client address resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Tonic peer fallback
src/client_address.rs, src/client_address/tests.rs
The service uses tonic’s TcpConnectInfo::remote_addr when ConnectInfo<SocketAddr> is absent. The test checks forwarded resolution and records the tonic peer address.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 6abd6

The change fixes client address resolution for tonic servers using plain TCP. Servers that pass pre-handshaken TLS streams to serve_with_incoming still cannot resolve a peer; a small follow-up can read the nested TLS record. This is a bounded gap in a narrow configuration, so merging is low risk.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #157 requires a TcpConnectInfo fallback for ClientAddressLayer. The supplied change summary states that the service uses tonic's remote address when axum ConnectInfo<SocketAddr> is absent. The added test uses TcpConnectInfo, a trusted 10.0.0.0/8 peer, and X-Forwarded-For, and expects Resolution::Forwarded(203.0.113.7) with peer 10.1.2.3:443. This covers the issue behavior and the reported tonic-server case.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to src/client_address.rs and its tests. The documentation update describes the tonic source. The test verifies the required fallback and trusted-proxy behavior. No unrelated change is shown in the supplied pull request evidence.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files.

[Medium impact] No blocking findings remain. The review identifies no reason to hold this PR from merging.

Summary

The PR lets ClientAddressLayer read the peer from tonic's plain and TLS connection records.

  • Client address layers now find peers recorded by tonic servers.
  • Cleaned proxy reports can be checked as one client address.
  • Required addresses stay unavailable when a trusted proxy reports none.

No actionable new issues were found. The previous commit and current head have different merge bases with the target, so this review covered the full PR diff. No previous review threads were supplied.

A trusted proxy that forwarded nothing resolved to its own address, so
a required address passed with the proxy standing in for the client.
Where an address is required this now resolves nothing; an untrusted
peer is still the client.
The X-Real-IP profile reads that header alone, as it must behind nginx,
so behind a proxy that already resolved the client a contradicting
X-Forwarded-For passed and was then rewritten away. The cleaned_report
profile takes one address and refuses a report whose X-Forwarded-For or
Forwarded disagrees with it.
