Ships the Nexcess banner design with the package, so a plugin passes only the copy and calls render(), with no markup or CSS of its own.

Ticket: none on this branch. Related: SMTNC-3096, the first plugin to use it (TEC).

Why

Building SMTNC-3096 in TEC common took its own template and about 100 lines of CSS, which every Nexcess plugin would have copied.

What changes for plugins

  • Banner takes the URL the plugin serves the package from (plugins_url()). render() prints the stylesheet from there, just before the banner.
  • render( $shouldDisplay, $template, $stylesheet ) swaps the template or CSS for that call only.
  • Templates get $dismiss_url, which passes the WordPress coding standards.

Breaking (nothing has shipped yet): the package URL is Banner's 4th argument, so the schedule moves to 5th and 6th. The image/imageAlt fields and the nx_banners_template:{id} filter are removed.

Proof

  • composer check: 43 tests, phpcs and phpstan clean. New tests cover the stylesheet link, both render() overrides, the broken-template fallback and $dismiss_url.
  • Installed in TEC common on a local site: top banner on plugin screens, stacked in the settings sidebar, and a dismissal hides it everywhere. Screenshots to attach.

AI usage: Drafted with Claude Opus 5.5. I reviewed and tested every change — this is my work and I am accountable for it.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Banners support per-render template and stylesheet overrides. Invalid custom template paths fall back to the bundled template, and the stylesheet is printed before the banner.
    • Updated styling adapts to the banner’s width and includes heading and body text, a dismiss control, and an optional CTA link that opens in a new tab.
  • Changes

    • Image fields and the previous image and primary-button presentation are no longer supported.
    • Banner setup now requires the package URL.
  • Documentation

    • Updated setup, rendering, field, dismissal, and versioning guidance.

Templates now get `$dismiss_url` instead of `$dismissUrl`, so a plugin that replaces the template passes the WordPress coding standards without a phpcs:ignore. Templates still reading `$dismissUrl` break; none have shipped.
Plugins showing a Nexcess banner no longer write their own markup and CSS. The bundled template is now the black Nexcess banner, and it sizes itself to the space it is given: wide at the top of a page, stacked in a narrow spot such as a settings sidebar.

Its styles live in `src/templates/banner.css`. `Banner` takes the URL the registering plugin serves the package from, so the stylesheet always comes from the same copy as the template that renders. `render()` prints the stylesheet's link just before the banner, since a style enqueued mid-page only prints in the footer and would leave the banner unstyled until then.

Breaking: the package URL is `Banner`'s new fourth argument, moving the schedule to fifth and sixth, and the `image` and `imageAlt` fields are gone because the design has no image. Nothing has shipped yet.
A plugin can now swap the template, the stylesheet or both for a single call: `render( $shouldDisplay, $template, $stylesheet )`. The choice applies only to the plugin making the call, so a plugin no longer adds and removes a filter around its own render to keep from changing how other plugins render the same banner.

A template path that is not a file still falls back to the bundled template, and no stylesheet means the bundled one.

Breaking: the `nx_banners_template:{id}` filter is gone. Nothing has shipped yet.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Keep the stylesheet handle distinct for the selected URL.

If nx-banners-{id} is already registered, WordPress ignores this wp_register_style() call. wp_print_styles() then prints the earlier URL, or prints nothing if the handle was already processed. A render() stylesheet override can therefore use the wrong CSS. Give distinct stylesheet URLs distinct handles, and model registration and printing state in tests/TestCase.php::stubStyles(). Comment thread src/templates/banner.css Outdated
The bundled stylesheet's URL now carries `Package::VERSION` instead of the file's modification time, so it changes when a release does. Bump the constant with every release, or browsers keep the cached stylesheet. A stylesheet passed to `render()` still gets no version.
The blue line was 4.23:1 against the black background, below the 4.5:1 WCAG AA asks of text under 24px, which is how it renders in a narrow spot and on smaller screens. It is now `#336fe4`, the brand blue lightened just enough to reach 4.53:1. The button keeps the original blue, since its white text already passes at 4.96:1.
