Problem

CRC (CodeReady Containers) is OpenShift 4 running locally. It was misdetected and misclassified, and once deployed it stayed wrong on every subsequent deploy.

Fixes

Detection (env.DetectClusterType): CRC reports OpenShift 4 API resources, so it is handled inside the OpenShift 4 branch. A CRC cluster is identified by its api.crc.testing server host (isCRCOpenShift4) and classified as ClusterTypeCRC rather than a plain OpenShift4 cluster.

Classification (types.ClusterType):

  • CRC: IsOpenShift true (OpenShift-style routes/operator/default-registry pull secrets) and local, with LoadBalancer gated out (small resource profile, port-forward, no LoadBalancer).

Only CRC's OpenShift preset is supported. The MicroShift preset is intentionally not supported: MicroShift does not serve the config.openshift.io API group, so the operator renders Central with non-OpenShift securityContexts (explicit UIDs/fsGroups) that MicroShift's SCCs then reject. Supporting it would require roxie to work around the operator's platform detection, which is out of scope here.

Testing

Extended unit tests for detection, classification, and defaults. go build ./... and go test ./... pass.
Smoke tested on the CRC OpenShift preset.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • CRC clusters are now identified from the API server address, regardless of hostname casing. Context names alone no longer identify a cluster as CRC.
    • CRC is classified as an OpenShift cluster, but is not reported as supporting load balancers.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for cluster classification and CRC detection across supported cluster types.

📝 Walkthrough

CRC detection now uses the case-insensitive API server hostname api.crc.testing instead of context-name patterns. CRC is classified as OpenShift, but SupportsLoadBalancer returns false for CRC. Tests cover hostname detection and cluster-type predicates.

Changes: CRC cluster classification

Layer / File(s) Summary
CRC cluster predicates
internal/types/cluster_type.go, internal/types/cluster_type_test.go
IsOpenShift now includes CRC. SupportsLoadBalancer excludes CRC while retaining support for other OpenShift types, GKE, AKS, and EKS. Tests cover four predicates across eight cluster types.
CRC hostname detection
internal/env/env.go, internal/env/env_test.go
OpenShift 4 detection identifies CRC from the API server hostname api.crc.testing, ignoring case. CRC-like context names alone no longer identify CRC. Tests cover matching and non-matching hosts and contexts.

Explanation

Issue #282 requires a route exposure option for local CRC deployments. The reviewed internal/types/exposure.go defines only ExposureNone and ExposureLoadBalancer. It has no route parsing, serialization, or deployment configuration. The PR changes classify CRC and disable LoadBalancer support, but they do not implement the required route option or resolve the exposure control described in #282.

CRC (CodeReady Containers) is OpenShift 4 running locally, so it needs
both OpenShift characteristics (routes, operator, default registry pull
secrets) and local characteristics (small resource profile, port-forward,
no LoadBalancer). Previously it was misdetected and misclassified.

- types.ClusterTypeCRC is documented as an OpenShift type: IsOpenShift
returns true, IsLocal returns true, SupportsLoadBalancer returns false.

Detection (env.DetectClusterType):
- CRC runs OpenShift 4 and serves it at api.crc.testing, so it reports
OpenShift 4 API resources. Within the OpenShift 4 branch, an
api.crc.testing server host is classified as CRC (via isCRCOpenShift4)
  before the Infra/plain OpenShift4 cases.

Extended unit tests for detection, classification, and defaults.

Can we add a case with the CRC server hostname but only Kubernetes API resources? That would protect the OpenShift-preset requirement if the detection order changes in the future.
