Why

--retries only repeats failed tests; could_not_run is final. When the single model call that picks a click or type target failed (for example on a timeout), the locator returned provider_error and the test ended could_not_run, so it never got its retry.

This is the part of #167 (thanks @bagrat) that #169 didn't already cover. #169 made stale locator results and stale action refusals fail the step; this adds the locator's provider_error.

What changes

  • A locator provider_error now fails the step with code provider_error and the message "the model call that picks the target failed; run the test again".
  • Provider failures that affect the whole run (a rejected key, a configuration error, a rate limit) are thrown before this point and still stop the run with could_not_run. The existing tests for those pass unchanged.

Testing

  • flow-runner.provider-errors.test.ts: the "scoped to the step" test now expects a failed test and a failed step with code provider_error. It fails on main (could_not_run) and passes with this change.
  • npx tsc --noEmit -p packages/core and eslint are clean, and npx vitest run packages/core passes (728).
  • The CodeScene pre-commit safeguard passes.

A locator provider_error that is not run-wide (for example a timeout) now
fails the step instead of marking the test could_not_run, so --retries
can repeat it. Run-wide provider failures still stop the run.

Follow-up to #169, taking the remaining part of #167.

Set github.comment.collapsed: true in .github/pr-lens.yml to fold the comment behind one View architecture and data flow row. Drawing still runs as before

🪧 More tips
  • Run npx skills add coldteadotai/pr-lens, then tell your coding agent: "Diagram the change you just made with PR Lens and attach it to the pull request."
  • Run npx @coldtea/pr-lens-cli analyze --base origin/main on a branch, then npx @coldtea/pr-lens-cli render .pr-lens/graph.json. Same lenses, your own model key, before the pull request exists
  • Click the link under each diagram to open it on a canvas you can zoom, pan and step through
  • The diagrams are links. Click one to open it on the canvas, then press W or click play to walk through the change
  • Open a diagram on the canvas, then press W or click play to walk through the change one step at a time
  • The CLI's render reads .github/pr-lens.yml and applies your renames, exclusions and lane pins at draw time
  • Set github.draw: on-demand in .github/pr-lens.yml and PR Lens stops drawing pull requests on its own. Comment @pr-lens draw on a pull request when you want that one drawn
  • Add .github/workflows/pr-lens.yml with coldteadotai/pr-lens/packages/action@v0 and your model provider's key as its api-key to run PR Lens from your own CI. Any /chat/completions endpoint works
  • After a push, tick Redraw to draw the latest commit
  • Switch GitHub to dark mode and the diagrams follow. The moving dots are this pull request's data in motion
  • Set github.description: false in .github/pr-lens.yml to stop PR Lens adding buttons to your PR descriptions

Refresh retry list omits provider_error, so that failure still ends could_not_run

When a click is refused as stale, refreshAfterQuiet calls locate(); if it returns unresolved("provider_error") the check at sentence-execution.ts:919 does not include it, throws new Error("The target could not be resolved."), and record(unsupported(...)) makes the…

Fix: Add "provider_error" to the reason list in the refresh callback’s retried.reason check in packages/core/src/flow-runner/sentence-execution.ts, beside "timeout".

visionFallbackNote appends a vision note to a provider_error

visionFallbackNote in observation.ts returns the ”vision fallback could not run” note for any reason other than no_candidates and stale. A provider_error on a click with a visionResolver set ends its message with an unrelated vision sentence.

Fix: Add "provider_error" to the exclusion list in visionFallbackNote in packages/core/src/locator/observation.ts.
