Summary

  • Make plain firefox-cli setup register the native host on supported platforms before printing extension installation and approval guidance; keep setup native-host for targeted registration.
  • Register/update the Windows per-user native-host registry value and let doctor diagnose and repair missing or stale values; report non-missing manifest read failures on macOS/Linux with their filesystem cause and prevent doctor --fix from treating those paths as missing or replacing them.
  • Bound Windows PowerShell registry operations to 30 seconds; terminate stalled processes and return captured output with the error.
  • Keep JSON side effects equivalent to text output and make dry runs write-free. Align setup docs and Windows release verification with this flow.
  • Remove the user-approved redundant setup sentence from docs/setup.md without replacement or other prose edits.
  • Add a Windows-only CI integration using the packaged CLI and real HKCU; local package and release checks remain write-free.
  • Apply the user-approved formatting-only correction to the extension manifest after CI exposed its pre-existing Biome format mismatch; manifest semantics are unchanged.

Closes #6
Kent task: FFCLI-5

QA verification

Manual QA used the packaged CLI at commit 62b1be0 with isolated temporary HOME paths containing spaces and Δ.

  • A blocked manifest destination made setup fail with a path-specific EISDIR cause and actionable remediation. Both JSON setup forms produced parseable error output on stdout, empty stderr, and exit 1.
  • Successful setup printed the extension/approval steps and wrote a valid manifest. Repeated JSON setup produced the same manifest SHA-256.
  • Dry-run commands returned plans without writing files. Doctor diagnosed a missing manifest without writing, and doctor --fix restored one; exit 1 was expected because the isolated environment had no paired Firefox extension.
  • Windows native-host registration was verified in hosted CI on October 22, 2026 (see the CI readiness evidence). Interactive Firefox setup/approval remains unverified. Focused automated doctor tests cover directory-valued manifests in text/JSON with and without --fix, preserve the filesystem cause, and verify that the directory remains intact. Attachments are headless renderings of CLI output, not GUI screenshots.

CI readiness

The prior Ubuntu and macOS validation jobs stopped at Biome format:check on packages/extension/src/manifest.json, unchanged from main; the user-approved formatting-only fix is in 61036f0, and a focused formatter check passed. The Windows validation job in that run exposed eight setup-registration test failures because tests used host path semantics for simulated Windows and macOS paths. The test helpers were corrected; a follow-up review found one remaining registry-denial test read that bypassed the helper, fixed in 0b74676. Commit b0b02b0 adds a 30-second PowerShell registry timeout with captured-output diagnostics and focused automated coverage. The focused changed suites, affected package typechecks, Biome, and ESLint pass locally. Run 39776552880 passed Ubuntu/macOS validation and the security/package checks but Windows validation failed because the new doctor JSON test searched serialized JSON for a raw Windows path. Commit 4071c8d parses JSON and checks the manifest path and error fields structurally; four focused cases pass locally, as do CLI typecheck, Biome, and ESLint. That failing run predates 4071c8d and does not validate the correction. Live Windows registry and Firefox behavior remain unverified.

Windows registry integration

Package Current OS (windows-latest) passed; the "Verify Windows native-host registration" step completed successfully on October 22, 2026 at 13:19:12 UTC. It ran packaged firefox-cli plain setup and targeted setup twice, independently verified the real HKCU default REG_SZ value and native-host manifest after registration, and verified doctor diagnosis and doctor --fix repair for both missing and stale registry entries. The test removed its registry key afterward. Interactive Firefox pairing was outside this check.

Diff size versus main

  • Total: +1717 / -155 (gross 1872; net +1562).

Caveats and follow-up

  • Interactive Firefox connection approval remains unverified and was outside this registry integration check.
  • web-ext reported four DANGEROUS_EVAL warnings and zero errors.

📝 Walkthrough

firefox-cli setup now registers the native host and provides extension connection guidance. It supports write-free dry runs and JSON output. On Windows, registration includes a per-user registry entry. doctor checks registration and extension connection status, and doctor --fix can repair registration. The native-host package adds registry operations and structured registration errors. Release checks use dry-run output to validate the Windows manifest.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#6] requires firefox-cli setup native-host to create the Windows native-messaging registry entry. registerNativeMessagingHost writes the manifest and then writes the per-user registry value through PowerShell. The CLI uses this path for targeted setup and for plain setup. Tests cover registration, stale-value replacement, repeated registration, dry runs, write failures, and the 30-second timeout.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes remain connected to issue [#6]. Plain setup, doctor repair, JSON output, dry-run behavior, diagnostics, documentation, release checks, and Windows integration tests support or verify native-host registration. The extension manifest change is formatting-only and supports the reported formatter check without changing semantics. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 54 functions across 15 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Compare Windows registry paths case-insensitively.

The registry reader returns the stored path without normalization, but doctor compares it with strict string equality. A case-different path can refer to the same Windows file and still be reported as stale. doctor --fix then performs an unnecessary registry write.
