docs: port the Clerk with Next.js guide to Prisma ORM 8 and Next.js 16 - #8523
Conversation
Rewrites /guides/authentication/clerk/nextjs for Prisma ORM 8, Next.js 16, and @clerk/nextjs 7 (proxy.ts, Show, direct webhooks link), adds the Prisma Compute deployment step, and moves the Prisma ORM 7 version to /guides/v7/authentication/clerk/nextjs. read each secret silently with Bash `read -rs`, export it, then invoke `npx
prisma project env add` with only the variable name and role. Apply this to both
`CLERK_SECRET_KEY` and `CLERK_WEBHOOK_SIGNING_SECRET`.

- Line 40: Update the import-alias prompt text so `@/*` appears intact inside
inline code, with a space before “by default,” and close the italicized question
before the `No` response. Locate the prompt in the Clerk Next.js authentication
guide and preserve its wording.
- Around line 149-156: Update the Clerk imports and Navbar in the Next.js
authentication guide to replace SignedIn and SignedOut with Show, using the
signed-in and signed-out conditions to preserve the existing button visibility.
Apply the same change to the other affected Navbar instance.
- Around line 461-468: Update the Clerk webhook’s evt.data handling before
prisma.user.upsert to select the address matching primary_email_address_id and
skip the event when no primary email exists. Build the user name from only
present first_name and last_name values, using null when neither is available,
and pass these values into the upsert create branch.
- Around line 130-132: Update the ClerkProvider and button JSX examples so diff
markers use JSX comment notation rather than appearing as rendered text, and
remove formatter-added {" "} nodes; keep the Post text inside the button and
omit any marker after the closing ClerkProvider tag.

… shortcut link Read the Compute secrets with `read -rs` instead of inline assignments, fix the Prisma ORM 7 twin (pin @clerk/nextjs@6, drop the formatter artifacts and diff markers inside JSX, fix the import-alias prompt and the "null null" name), and exclude dashboard.clerk.com/~/ from the link checker: it serves the signed-in user's application and returns 404 anonymously. Ports the Clerk with Next.js guide to Prisma ORM 8, Next.js 16, and the current Clerk SDK, and adds the Prisma Compute deployment at the end. The Prisma ORM 7 version moves to
/guides/v7/authentication/clerk/nextjsunchanged, following the pattern in Writing guides. Why
Clerk reviewed the guide and asked for three corrections, and the page still carried the "This guide uses Prisma ORM 7" banner. The rest of the page was also out of date for Prisma ORM 8 (Prisma Client,
prisma generate, findUnique) and for Clerk's current SDK (SignedIn/SignedOutno longer exist in@clerk/nextjs7).What changed
Clerk's requested corrections
middleware.tsis nowsrc/proxy.tswith the sameclerkMiddleware()export and the matcher from Clerk's current quickstart (Next.js 16 renamed the file convention; a note covers Next.js 15 and older).<SignedIn>and<SignedOut>are replaced by<Show when="signed-in">and<Show when="signed-out">.Prisma ORM 8
create-prisma --template next, the models live insrc/prisma/contract.prisma, and queries usedb.orm.public.User/db.orm.public.Post(.where().first(),.create(),.upsert({ conflictOn }),.orderBy((p) => p.createdAt.desc())).npx prisma migration plan --name initbeforedb:init. Without a committed migration path the Compute deploy fails withMIGRATION_PATH_NOT_FOUND, which is now a documented gotcha.Webhook handler
200and is skipped. Clerk's "Send Example" payload has an emptyemail_addresseslist, which made the old handler throw.emailand updatesclerkId, so a redelivered event is a no-op and a user deleted in Clerk and re-created with the same email does not fail on the unique constraint.Secrets
.env.local, not.env: withoutput: "standalone",next buildcopies.envinto the build output that the Compute deploy uploads. The template's.gitignoreonly lists.env, so the guide adds.env.localto it. The dev server reloads.env.localon save, so no restart step.Deployment
npx prisma deploy module.ts, registers a second Clerk webhook endpoint for the live URL, addsCLERK_SECRET_KEYandCLERK_WEBHOOK_SIGNING_SECRETwithprisma project env add(values read from the environment), and redeploys. A note covers the publishable key for deploy-on-push builds.Navigation

Every titled code block is byte-identical to the sandbox source.Prisma Compute:
npx prisma deploy module.ts; live URL https://hvu134ghoxhyiucxucgpswso.ewr.prisma.build (development Clerk instance, so sign-up works there; the row lands in the database the deploy provisioned).project env add+ redeploy; sign-up, sign-out, sign-in, and post creation on the live URL were checked in the browser, including after the final build that ships no.env(so the secret key comes only from the Compute variable).Repo checks:
pnpm lint:links(0 errors),pnpm --filter docs lint:spellcheck(0 issues;authtokenadded tocspell.json),pnpm --filter docs types:check, plus the docs skill scripts (check-plain.sh,check-staccato.py,check-ai-signs.sh) on the page. Two cold-reader review rounds and one technical review (installed type definitions, Clerk and Next.js docs, Compute artifact contents) were run and their findings folded in.Not run as written: the
ngrok http 3000command. The ngrok account on the test machine could not start a session, so the local webhook step was validated through an equivalentcloudflaredquick tunnel. The Clerk-facing steps (endpoint URL, signing secret, test delivery, real delivery) are identical.Follow-up commit (review round 1)
