The Prisma Postgres on Vercel guide (/docs/guides/postgres/vercel) said the integration sets only DATABASE_URL and implied that string is pooled. This PR lists the three variables the integration actually sets, says plainly that they hold the direct connection string, explains where the pooled one comes from, and adds a copyable coding-agent prompt for the Vercel CLI path. Vercel's partner guide "Grow your Vercel integration installs" asks providers to put that prompt in their getting-started docs.

Changes

apps/docs/content/docs/guides/postgres/vercel.mdx only:

  • Intro: a table of the three variables the integration sets on each connected environment: DATABASE_URL, POSTGRES_URL and PRISMA_DATABASE_URL, all the direct postgres://USER:PASSWORD@db.prisma.io:5432/postgres?sslmode=require string. One sentence covers older databases whose PRISMA_DATABASE_URL still holds a hosted Accelerate URL, with a link to the retirement page.
  • New "Set up with a coding agent" section (an <AgentPrompt> block near the top): load the prisma-postgres-setup skill (npx skills add prisma/skills --skill prisma-postgres-setup if it's missing), vercel link, reuse a connected database via vercel integration list, otherwise vercel integration add prisma --help then vercel integration add prisma/prisma-postgres --name <name> on free unless the user picks a paid plan, vercel env pull, one read-only query, then report the environments and remind the user that DATABASE_URL is direct. The commands match feat(prisma-postgres-setup): cover the Vercel CLI path, env vars, first query and errors skills#33 (prisma-postgres-setup/references/vercel-marketplace.md). Below the prompt: by default the CLI connects one database to production, preview and development and runs vercel env pull, so all three share data. Use -e for separate databases. Terms acceptance in the browser is a human step.
  • "Why Prisma Postgres works well on Vercel": drops "includes connection pooling by default" and "The DATABASE_URL the Marketplace sets works in local dev, preview deployments, and production". It now says every database has a managed pooler reached at pooled.db.prisma.io, and that the integration's variables hold the direct string.
  • Features: "Automatic generation of Prisma Postgres URLs for production and preview environments" becomes "connection strings set on the environments you connect: production, preview, and development by default".
  • Connect database to Vercel project: names all three variables, says you choose environments on connect (CLI default: all three built-ins), and says to redeploy because existing deployments don't get new variables.
  • New "Use the pooled connection string for application traffic": the direct string works for the app, migrations and Studio. Direct connections are capped at 10 on Free and Starter, and 5 of those are reserved. For load, open Prisma Console with vercel integration open prisma, create a connection string (Console shows pooled and direct), add the pooled one under a new name such as DATABASE_URL_POOLED without overwriting the integration's variables, point the runtime client at it, and redeploy. Vercel's Rotate Secrets doesn't rotate strings created in Console.
  • Next.js section: one sentence that DATABASE_URL is direct, with a link to the pooled section.

Out of scope: making the integration inject a pooled string (PRO-82, backlog). metaDescription is unchanged. "Built-in connection pooling, no pgBouncer setup required" is still true of the product.

  • pdp-control-plane main @ 125a121c87, services/marketplaces/vercel/utils.ts: buildProvisioningSecrets returns PRISMA_DATABASE_URL, POSTGRES_URL and DATABASE_URL, all set to generatePostgresConnectionUrl(...), which defaults to host db.prisma.io:5432 with ?sslmode=require. (The two extra names are skipped only when allowRemoteDatabases is true, which is the Accelerate case, not Prisma Postgres. services/marketplaces/vercel/index.ts calls it with allowRemoteDatabases: false.) resolvePrismaDatabaseUrlByMode still returns a prisma+postgres://accelerate.prisma-data.net URL for resources in accelerate mode.
  • Same repo, services/marketplaces/vercel/index.ts rotate-secrets handler: it revokes only the integration's keys (the stored tenantApiKeyId, or names starting with vercel- or Rotated key) and returns new values for the same three variables.
  • Same repo, services/console-compute/lib/externalManagementProvider.ts: Vercel workspaces have connectionString: true, so they can create connection strings in Console. The Console connection-strings page shows Vercel users: "Additional connection strings must be manually added as environment variables in Vercel."
  • Vercel CLI docs, https://vercel.com/docs/cli/integration: vercel integration add <integration>/<product>; --environment "Defaults to all three built-in environments"; after provisioning it connects the resource and runs vercel env pull unless --no-connect/--no-env-pull; vercel integration open opens the provider's dashboard via SSO.
  • Vercel docs, https://vercel.com/docs/integrations/install-an-integration/product-integration: dashboard connect lets you pick environments; "Existing deployments do not get new or changed variables."
  • Vercel KB, https://vercel.com/kb/guide/using-coding-agents-to-procure-vercel-marketplace-integrations: CLI install and login steps, and terms acceptance in the browser that "the agent can't bypass".
  • Prisma docs on main: /postgres/database/connection-pooling (pooled host for app traffic; direct limits 10/10/50/100 with 5 reserved) and /postgres/database/connecting-to-your-database (Console shows pooled and direct strings).
  • prisma/skills main: prisma-postgres-setup exists, and its SKILL.md routes v0/Vercel Marketplace to references/vercel-marketplace.md. The skills install command matches /ai/tools/skills.
  • Plan IDs free/starter/pro/business: pdp-control-plane maps Vercel's billingPlanId to these plan handles.

Not run end to end: I did not provision a database with the CLI or open Console for a Vercel workspace in this pass.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Updated the Vercel and PostgreSQL guide with the environment variables configured by the integration, and clarified the difference between direct and pooled connection strings.
    • Added guidance for coding-agent setup, CLI environment behavior, and configuring pooled connections for production Vercel Functions traffic.
    • Clarified direct-connection limits on Free and Starter plans and noted the scheduled retirement of older Accelerate URLs on December 1, 2026.

…v vars

- Add "Set up with a coding agent": a copyable prompt that uses
  `vercel integration add prisma/prisma-postgres`, `vercel env pull` and a
first query, and loads the prisma-postgres-setup skill.
- List the three variables the integration sets (DATABASE_URL,
  POSTGRES_URL, PRISMA_DATABASE_URL), all the direct db.prisma.io string.
- Stop implying the injected string is pooled; add a section on getting
the pooled string from Prisma Console and adding it as a new variable.
- Say that one database is connected to production, preview and
  development by default.

Walkthrough

The Vercel Postgres guide now documents the integration’s connection variables, CLI environment behavior, and coding-agent setup. It also explains how to configure a separate pooled connection string for production application traffic while keeping DATABASE_URL for Prisma CLI commands.

1. Load the prisma-postgres-setup skill and follow its Vercel Marketplace reference. If it isn't installed, run `npx skills add prisma/skills --skill prisma-postgres-setup` first.
2. Check that the project is linked to Vercel (`vercel link`). Run `vercel integration list` and reuse a Prisma Postgres database that is already connected.
3. Otherwise run `vercel integration add prisma --help` to read the regions and plans, then `vercel integration add prisma/prisma-postgres --name <name>`. Use the `free` plan unless I choose a paid one. If the CLI asks me to accept Prisma's terms in the browser, tell me and wait.
4. If the add command didn't pull the environment variables, run `vercel env pull`. Check that `DATABASE_URL` is set without printing its value.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Pull development variables when reusing a database.

If Line 31 finds an already connected database, no add command runs. A fresh checkout can therefore reach the read-only query without a local DATABASE_URL, because this step only handles variables missing after add. Tell the agent to check for the local variable and run vercel env pull when it is absent. The pull command downloads the linked project’s Development variables. (vercel.com)
