docs(errors): each error reference says which commands it covers and links the other - #8353
Conversation
…and link each other The generator writes a scope sentence on each page, a namespace list built from the source's sections, and a note on the CLI namespace that both pages have. Neither page claims to list every code any more. Both pages are regenerated from main. WalkthroughThe generator now applies page-specific scope text and builds namespace indexes. The CLI and ORM references clarify their code coverage. The ORM reference also expands three error-code descriptions. ChangesError references

in the error-reference generator so engine `CLI.*` codes emitted before ORM
handlers remain on the CLI reference, while ORM-specific codes are directed to
the ORM reference. Regenerate both reference pages using the updated generator.

…ORM command codes The command-line engine raises its own CLI.* codes for every prisma command, including the Prisma ORM ones, so a command-prefix rule sent readers to the wrong page for codes such as CLI.CONFIG_SECTION_INVALID from prisma contract emit. A reader who arrives with CLI.CONFIG_SECTION_INVALID from prisma contract emit read the first paragraph, concluded the code was on the ORM page, and never reached the note below the namespace list. The note now follows the scope sentence directly and no longer says engine. You see
CLI.PROMPT_REQUIREDin your terminal, search for it, and land on/orm/reference/error-reference. That page says it lists every code and has aCLInamespace, but the code is not in it. The code lives on/cli/error-reference, which also says it lists every code and also has aCLInamespace, and neither page mentions the other. After this change the ORM page opens with:followed directly by this note, and then a linked list of the namespaces on the page:
The CLI page gets the mirror image.
The decision
Each page says which commands it covers, lists its namespaces, links the other page, and explains the shared
CLInamespace. The change is made in the generator that produces both pages, not in the pages themselves. Why the generator
Both pages are generated by
apps/docs/scripts/generate-error-reference.mjsfrom a markdown file that each product repository owns (docs/reference/error-reference.mdin prisma/prisma and in prisma/prisma-cli). A workflow regenerates them every day and on every change upstream, and overwrites the files in this repository. An edit to the pages would last until the next run. The pages also cannot be merged into one, because the two repositories each own aCLInamespace and use the same code names for different errors. What changed, step by step
##headings at generation time, each linked to its section, keeping the one-line description from the source's own namespace table where it has one. The list comes from the headings rather than the table because the table had already fallen behind (TESTKIThad a section but no row).CLInamespace. The note above is emitted only when the source has a## CLIheading, and it sits directly under the scope sentence, because a cold read showed that a reader arriving withCLI.CONFIG_SECTION_INVALIDfromprisma contract emitstopped at the first paragraph and never reached a note placed below the namespace list. The rule is by who raises the code, not by command prefix: the command-line engine raisesCLI.*codes for every command, including the ORM ones, and those are on the CLI page; the ORM commands' ownCLI.*codes are on the ORM page.#<CODE>" becomes "When an error prints adocsUrl, that link opens the code's entry on this page", and the generated comment and intro have no em dashes.scripts/generate-error-reference.test.ts: the scope sentence, the namespace list, theCLInote only with a## CLIheading, the fallback insertion with its warning, and the frontmatter.main.One thing to know: the CLI source says "every" a second time, in "and this page lists every code the CLI can emit". The generator cuts that clause with a literal match. Upstream should drop it too.
How it was checked
list-error-codes.mjs --verifypasses on the regenerated pages, run the way the sync workflow runs it. That script needs a git checkout of the repository, so depth-1 clones were used.lint:linksreports 0 errors; the docs app tests (71) and the root tests (63) pass;pnpm checkpasses.P2002-style codes went), which the source files own; that is recorded for the two repositories as item D31 in the audit'schanges.md.Follow-up in the source repositories
The intros of
docs/reference/error-reference.mdin prisma/orm and prisma/prisma-cli are written for those repositories' maintainers ("structured envelope", architecture decision records as the definition, thestructuredErrorversusruntimeErrorrule), and this generator patches around them. Rewriting those intros for readers upstream would let the generator stop doing that. The files themselves stay: the hosted pages are generated from them, and each repository's CI fails a pull request that adds a code without an entry there. Tracked as D31 in the audit'schanges.md.Alternatives considered
CLI.PROMPT_REQUIREDmeans different things in the two repositories, so one page cannot hold both.Context
