Refs #342. This covers the two "Performance and scale" items of phase 3.

What was slow

  • The component tree, injectors, change detection and forms collectors each sent their whole report on every refresh. That came to about 3.5 full reports a second on a busy app.
  • The component tree walked the whole DOM every time.
  • Pages kept pushing when nobody was watching.
  • The panel rendered every row: 2,000 rows came to about 10k DOM nodes.

Deltas

After the first full report, each of the four collectors sends only what changed (push-delta.ts, delta-channel.ts).

Field kinds

Kind What it sends
plain Sent whole when its JSON changes.
list Changed items by key, plus the order when it changes.
tree Changed nodes, plus the roots when they change.
map Changed entries.

Keys per collector

Collector Keys
Component tree Node id, plus defer and for-block ids
Injectors injector.id
Change detection Cycle id, with hosts as a map
Forms Form id, and event seq

How it stays in step

  • A delta carries {base, seq}. If the server doesn't hold that base, it answers {known: false} and the page resends in full, the same resync pattern as feat(ui): add a command palette, settings, item links and an Errors inspector #389.
  • The page only switches to deltas after the server answers {delta: true}, so an older server keeps getting full reports. The native overlays are unchanged.
  • The server rebuilds the exact report, field order included, and passes it to the existing push handler, so the panel, agents and expiry see what they did before.
  • The server refuses deltas that loop, go deeper than 2,000 levels or hold more than 50k items, and treats __proto__ as a plain field.

Throttle, dirty flags and idle pages

Throttle. The four collectors push at most once a second. Pushes caused by a selection, an edit or a wake skip the throttle.

Dirty flags. The component tree is cached and only walked again when:

  • elements are added or removed (MutationObserver, including open shadow roots),
  • 4 seconds have passed,
  • dehydrated blocks remain,
  • or a push is forced.

Injectors are not cached, because environment injectors create services without any DOM change. They still get deltas, the throttle and the idle pause.

Idle pause (page-lease.ts, rpc/page-interest.ts, new limits.idleAfterMs, default 60s, 0 turns it off)

  • A page pushes only while a panel subscribes to one of the four shared states, or an agent called a tool within idleAfterMs.
  • When nobody is watching, the server broadcasts page-interest-changed. Idle pages send only keepalive pings and check again every 10s.
  • An agent call wakes idle pages and waits up to 1.5s for each live, visible page to resync.
  • The forms collector keeps recording while idle, so its timeline misses nothing.

Panel windowing (ui/virtual-window.ts)

Which lists

  • Lists over 300 rows render only the rows near view, with spacing for the rest:
    • the component tree, with fixed 32px rows,
    • the HTTP call table,
    • the Store change log and events list.
  • The Forms timeline and form list use content-visibility instead.

Screen readers and keyboard

  • Rows carry aria-setsize/aria-posinset, and the HTTP table carries aria-rowcount/aria-rowindex.
  • There is always one Tab stop. Home and End reach the true first and last rows.
  • A visible note says the browser's find only sees rows near view, while the filter searches all of them.

Before and after

Measured on a 2,000-component synthetic app in jsdom, over 10 seconds, with change detection every 100ms.

Before After
No changes, collection time 774ms 144–171ms
One element added per second 10 pushes, 1.40 MB 10 pushes, 8.3 KB
One element added every 100ms 35 pushes, 4.9 MB 10 pushes, 25 KB
Idle (no panel or agent) 35 pushes, 4.9 MB 0 pushes, 2 pings
Panel tree render 2,000 rows, 10,060 nodes, 854ms 36 rows, 241 nodes, ~100ms

The benchmarks are push-bench.test.ts and panel-bench.test.ts. They are skipped unless PANGULAR_BENCH=1.

Tests

Package

  • push-delta.test.ts: random tree changes rebuild byte for byte. Also covers each report shape, malformed input, __proto__ and repeated keys.
  • delta-server-equivalence.test.ts: two real servers, one fed full reports and one fed deltas, end up with identical shared state. They also give identical answers from list-components, inspect-providers, change-detection, inspect-forms and form-history.
  • delta-channel.test.ts, page-interest.test.ts, overlay-lease.test.ts and leased-collectors.test.ts.

Panel

  • component-tree-window.test.ts and long-lists-window.test.ts.

Axe

  • scripts/panel-axe.mjs now seeds 2,000 components and 2,000 HTTP calls.
  • All 51 axe checks pass in dark and light.

Checks

Check Result
pnpm format:check Pass
pnpm typecheck Pass
pnpm docs:build Pass
pnpm skills:check Pass
pnpm test:devtools 2532 passed, 1 skipped (the benchmark)
pnpm test:panel 637 passed, 1 skipped (the benchmark)
pnpm extension:build Done, in its own commit

The docs cover idleAfterMs and add a Performance section in configuration.md.

Not covered

  • The server still sends the whole shared state to the panel. Only page-to-server traffic uses deltas.
  • Lists with rows of different heights use an average height, so the scroll bar can shift slightly.
  • The Forms field tables and the SSR request table are not windowed.
  • Signals, router, HTTP, errors and NgRx pushes are unchanged.
  • The idle pause reads devframe's internal _rpcGroup.clients. If that is missing, it assumes someone is watching.
  • The Store lists have no browser axe check yet.

Generated by Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Long component trees, network call lists, and store activity lists show nearby entries as you scroll, keeping large lists more responsive.
    • Keyboard navigation can reach the first or last entry, including entries outside the visible area. Screen readers receive position information for component tree entries.
    • Component tree and network views indicate when only nearby entries are rendered; network search still covers all filtered calls.
  • Performance
    • Background report updates are reduced while pages are idle and resume when a panel or agent is watching.
    • Offscreen forms and timeline entries skip unnecessary rendering work.
  • Documentation
    • Added configuration guidance for idle reporting and large-list rendering.

The component tree, injectors, change detection and forms collectors now send only what changed after a first full report, at most once a second, and stop pushing while no panel or agent is watching (limits.idleAfterMs). The component tree skips DOM walks when nothing changed. Lists over 300 rows in the panel render only the rows near view. The server rebuilds the exact full reports, so the panel and agent tools see the same data. Refs #342

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The pull request adds delta-based report delivery controlled by page-interest leases. It also virtualizes long component, network, and store lists, adds keyboard and accessibility support, and applies content visibility to form and timeline entries.

Changes

Panel Virtualization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Virtual window and component tree
app/src/ui/virtual-window.ts, app/src/pages/component-tree.ts, app/src/ui/roving-list.ts, app/src/__tests__/*window*.test.ts, app/src/__tests__/virtual-window.test.ts, app/src/__tests__/panel-bench.test.ts
VirtualWindow calculates visible ranges and spacer sizes. ComponentTree renders a bounded row slice, exposes sibling position metadata, and reveals off-screen rows for focus. Home and End can target rows outside the rendered range. Tests cover long and short trees, keyboard focus, window bounds, and an opt-in render benchmark.
Network and store list windows
app/src/pages/network-inspector.ts, app/src/pages/store-inspector.ts, app/src/__tests__/long-lists-window.test.ts
NetworkInspector and StoreInspector render indexed slices with spacer geometry and virtual row metadata. Network tests cover 2,000-call and 20-call tables, including End-key focus.
Other panel rendering and long-list checks
app/src/pages/forms-inspector.ts, app/src/pages/forms-timeline.ts, scripts/panel-axe.mjs, extension/ui/*
Form entries and timeline event rows use automatic content visibility with reserved intrinsic sizes. The accessibility script seeds long component and HTTP lists and checks the views and End-key navigation. Extension entry points reference the updated UI bundle.

Delta Reports and Activity Leases

Layer / File(s) Summary
Delta encoding, reconstruction, and channel delivery
packages/devtools/src/push-delta.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/report-deltas.ts, packages/devtools/src/delta-channel.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/*delta*.test.ts
Report senders encode keyed list, tree, and map changes. Receivers validate and reconstruct reports by sequence. Delta channels handle acknowledgments, keepalives, and full-report resends. Tests cover round trips, equivalence with full reports, malformed deltas, and lost server state.
Page-interest leases and idle configuration
packages/devtools/src/rpc/page-interest.ts, packages/devtools/src/page-lease.ts, packages/devtools/src/rpc/page-owners.ts, packages/devtools/src/config.ts, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/{page-interest*,config.test.ts,delta-channel.test.ts}, apps/docs/src/content/getting-started/*
Page-interest tracking detects watched panels and renews agent leases. Page leases poll while inactive and coordinate wake and sync reports. Configuration adds idleAfterMs; documentation describes the setting and report activity. Tests cover lease transitions, waiting, polling, and timing.
Overlay collection and server report handling
packages/devtools/src/{overlay.ts,devframe.ts,forms-collector.ts,cd-overlay.ts,component-tree.ts,dom-dirty.ts}, packages/devtools/src/__tests__/{overlay-lease.test.ts,leased-collectors.test.ts,push-bench.test.ts,delta-channel.test.ts,forms-collector.test.ts,overlay-config.test.ts}
Overlay collectors use delta channels, page leases, throttling, and cached component-tree reads. Devframe applies deltas and manages per-page delta state. Forms and change-detection collectors use activity-aware delivery. Tests cover wake behavior, report updates, DOM caching, pacing, and push measurements.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 8d0ce

A failed wake report no longer confirms stale data as synchronized. No actionable merge-blocking issue remains after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 8d0ce

The new reporting protocol has gaps in page isolation and resource containment. A connected client could interfere with another page's refresh confirmation or cause excessive server resource use. Existing authentication and report-write ownership checks limit the exposure.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new shared page-interest RPC does not bind synchronization acknowledgements to the connection that owns the supplied page ID. A client able to invoke the RPC and knowing another page's ID can remove that page from an outstanding wake waiter without its reports arriving. Acknowledgements also lack a wake generation, allowing delayed confirmations to match a later wait. This weakens the integrity of the refresh barrier preceding agent reads. Successful local wake handling and the 1.5-second timeout do not enforce acknowledgement identity or freshness.
  • Medium · security · inferred: The new marked-full-report path retains raw fields and recursively flattens trees before the existing bounded report sanitizer runs. Its initial tree traversal has no depth or item budget, and full-report list and map caching do not enforce MAX_ITEMS. An authorized reporter can therefore cause oversized raw input to remain in the delta base even when the visible injector report is truncated. Compared with the base's direct sanitizer path, this introduces additional traversal and retained-memory exposure affecting the shared development hub. Ownership and expiry constrain reach and lifetime, but do not bound an accepted full report.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated exposure is within a reachable development hub. A caller with RPC access can influence wake bookkeeping for supplied page IDs; an authorized reporter can exercise the new raw reconstruction cache. Resource pressure can affect other pages and agent operations sharing that server. No production tenant boundary, secret access, or broader infrastructure authority was established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A foreign RPC caller can submit page-interest with a known victim pageId and synced:true. The handler passes that ID directly to settle, which removes it from pending wake waits without checking its owner or reports. This can release a waiting agent operation early when the affected acknowledgement completes the pending set.
  • inferred — An authorized injector reporter can submit a marked full tree with many uniquely keyed nodes. Reconstruction traverses and retains those raw nodes before the bounded sanitizer truncates the visible report. This introduces server-side resource amplification; exhaustion or process termination was not executed or verified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Report writes remain connection-owned. Marked reports require ownership before reconstruction, and all four storage callbacks independently enforce ownership, including legacy full reports. The new page-interest action does not apply that same boundary.
  • observed — The examined base-to-head comparison does not change hub authentication or origin setup. The existing hub supports one-time-code authentication, token trust and an explicit auth:false option. Disabled authentication therefore predates this PR; actual deployment settings were not supplied.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Failed wake pushes do not claim synchronization, invalid deltas discard their base for full recovery, and expiry removes unused bases and interest registrations. These mechanisms contain failure duration and retained-state lifetime, but do not replace acknowledgement authorization or initial report budgets.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind page-interest mutations and synchronization acknowledgements to the authenticated page owner, and bind each acknowledgement to the current wake generation. Invalidate outstanding confirmations across stop, disconnect and page takeover.
  • proposed — Apply explicit depth, item, field and retained-byte budgets before caching any full report, and enforce equivalent budgets for replacement fields in deltas. Reject over-budget input before recursive traversal rather than relying on downstream display sanitization.

Concurrent agent calls during a wake now wait for the same fresh reports, and pages that left or stopped reporting are no longer waited for. Form pushes go out at most once a second while typing with every timeline event kept, an idle page only pings, and a page restored from the back/forward cache sends a full report. A long list that shrinks while scrolled past its new end still shows its last rows. Refs #342

Acknowledge the page only after all wake reports succeed.

A rejected report push is converted to a fulfilled Promise.allSettled result. The page then sends { synced: true }. The server settles the wake waiter, and the leased read can return the previous report. Do not acknowledge the wake when any report fails. Let the server use its bounded timeout instead.
