Given the capability and popularity of pnpm, is there any plan to replace "npm" with "pnpm" as the default package manager included in node.js

Worth noting that pnpm maintainers would need to be onboard. Sure being distributed as part of our official distribution is huge for discoverability, it would also force them to align on Node.js release schedule. For example, npm 12.0.0 was released too late for Node.js 26.0.0, so now npm 11 needs to be maintained at least until Node.js 26 is EOL, in April 2029. But let's assume they are, your proposal could be split into two:

• drop npm from official Node.js distributions: Users expect Node.js to ship it, and many workflow would break if it was no longer the case. Unlikely to ever get consensus.
• ship pnpm as part of official Node.js distributions: there have been proposals in the past for including alternative alongside npm (e.g. deps: add Yarn 1.22.5 #37277), as adding such dependencies was deemed not worth the maintenance burden. Unlikely to ever get consensus.

For a bit of historical context, the project has experimented with Corepack, a Node.js-managed package manager whose sole goal was to download other package managers, with the idea that Node.js could ship a yarn and pnpm executables without keeping the burden of keeping them up-to-date. However that did not reach consensus, and Corepack was eventually removed from official distributions as of Node.js 25.0.0.

FWIW my personal opinion is that the ideal situation would be to have no default, i.e. drop npm and not replace it with something else. If in the early days of the project it had been decided that npm should be the one distributing Node.js, we would be in a better place. Pnpm has https://pnpm.io/blog/2021/12/29/yearly-update#managing-nodejs-versions-since-v6120 which is IMO a much better approach of the separation of concerns, but oh well, we don't live in my ideal world.

Anyway, the TL;DR is "no", and not because pnpm is not a good alternative.
