Summary

Consolidation wave 3: delete first, then simplify. Net about -700 lines.

Breaking:

  • Legacy config.yaml / config.yml / config.json are no longer migrated; with no config.toml present sumvox errors with a hint. serde_yaml is gone.
  • Built-in defaults are now exactly what sumvox init writes (macos then google, voice Aoede; Notification hook through macos). Configs without [tts] or [hooks.claude_code] pick these up.

Deleted: create_tts_from_config, estimate_cost and its cost log line, VoiceError::Llm, unused chrono/nix features, Cross.toml, .cargo/config.toml, scripts/test_hooks.sh.

Simplified: Default for TtsProviderConfig, one API-key resolver, one engine alias table (pinned by a test), one reqwest client helper, shared espeak/piper render-and-play.

Other user-visible changes: --tts gemini maps to google; an empty GEMINI_API_KEY falls through to GOOGLE_API_KEY; "provider not found" errors name the alias you typed; the "No TTS provider available. Tried:" list uses provider names and omits audio_file.

Verification

  • Independent review ran main's tests/cli.rs against this binary: the only failure is the init-with-legacy-config case covered by the breaking change above.
  • sumvox init output is byte-identical between main and this branch.
  • Per-provider HTTP client settings (timeout, no_proxy, headers) are unchanged.
  • The Auto TTS chain keeps its contract: error only when nothing can be tried; a usable audio_file entry counts as available; tried-and-failed degrades to silence (cli tests added).

Test plan

  • cargo test, cargo clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --check
  • Every commit compiles
  • CI ubuntu + macOS
  • Release cross build after removing Cross.toml (not run locally)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added gemini as an alias for Google text-to-speech.
    • API keys can fall back to a non-empty environment value when the configured key is unusable.
  • Improvements

    • Updated default speech selection to prefer the platform’s local engine, followed by Google with the Aoede voice. Notification speech now defaults to the local engine.
    • Improved error messages when no configured speech provider can be used.
  • Behavior Changes

    • Legacy YAML and JSON configuration files are no longer loaded or migrated. If no TOML configuration exists, use sumvox init or convert the legacy file to TOML.

A config.yaml, config.yml or config.json without a config.toml now fails
with an error pointing at config.toml and `sumvox init`, instead of being
migrated or silently replaced by defaults. `init` no longer treats legacy
files as an existing config. serde_yaml is removed.

BREAKING CHANGE: legacy YAML/JSON configs are no longer read or migrated.

Auto mode built a provider only to discard it and then rebuilt the whole
chain in speak_with_provider_fallback. Auto now goes straight to the
fallback chain. The chain keeps the old contract: if no provider could
even be tried it returns "No TTS provider available", a usable
audio_file entry still counts as available (silent, not an error), and
providers that were tried and failed degrade to silence.

The "Tried:" list in that error now names providers as they report
themselves (e.g. "espeak", not the configured "espeak_ng") and leaves
out audio_file entries.

estimate_cost fed only an info log. Removes it from the TtsProvider trait
and every impl, with the per-char price constants, the cost tests and the
now-unused CloudTtsProvider::is_gemini.

Cross.toml installed ALSA headers for rodio, which is gone; the other two
were a comments-only file and an unreferenced script superseded by
tests/e2e.rs.

Replaces the thirteen-field struct literals with ..Default::default().

The six get_*_api_key bodies collapse into resolve_key, and the repeated
`${` placeholder test in config and five providers becomes is_usable_key.
A set-but-empty GEMINI_API_KEY now falls through to GOOGLE_API_KEY.

TtsEngine::NAMES now drives from_str, the create_single_tts factory, the
pipeline's engine lookup and the audio_file check, replacing four copies
and nine near-identical dispatch arms. A test pins the full set of
accepted names. `--tts gemini` now parses as the google engine, as the
factory already accepted it. The spelling the user typed is tried first,
so "provider not found" errors name it (e.g. "say", not "macos").

http::client applies no_proxy and the timeout at all nine sites that
each hand-built a client.

Both engines spawn a binary, feed it text on stdin, enforce a timeout and
play the rendered WAV. That body now lives in tts::render. Temp files for
espeak are named sumvox_espeak-ng_* instead of sumvox_espeak_*.

Config::default() was Google-first with voice Zephyr while init wrote
macOS-first with voice Aoede and a macos notification provider. The init
settings are now the single definition: init serializes the default
unchanged, and a test checks the written file round-trips to it. A config
with no [tts] table, or no [hooks.claude_code] table, now gets these
defaults, and the Notification hook defaults to macos in that case.

BREAKING CHANGE: the built-in default TTS chain is macos then google
(voice Aoede), and the default Notification TTS provider is macos.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

Configuration loading, API-key checks, TTS defaults, engine selection, and provider fallback were updated. Local eSpeak and Piper synthesis now use a shared renderer. Providers use shared HTTP client constructors, and TTS cost estimation and legacy YAML/JSON migration were removed.

Changes

Configuration and TTS processing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Configuration defaults and loading
src/config.rs, src/main.rs, tests/cli.rs, CHANGELOG.md
API-key resolution and TTS defaults changed. Legacy YAML/JSON files are no longer loaded or migrated. Initialization and CLI tests reflect the updated configuration behavior.
TTS engine selection and local rendering
src/tts/mod.rs, src/tts/render.rs, src/tts/espeak.rs, src/tts/piper.rs, src/audio/file.rs
Engine aliases and enum dispatch were centralized. eSpeak and Piper now use shared rendering. TTS cost estimation was removed.
Provider HTTP clients and API-key checks
src/http.rs, src/llm/*, src/tts/*, src/config.rs
LLM and TTS providers use shared HTTP client constructors. API-key availability checks use the shared usability predicate. Provider-specific TTS cost estimates were removed.
Automatic TTS fallback
src/pipeline.rs, src/pipeline/tests.rs, tests/cli.rs
Fallback handling distinguishes skipped providers from failed attempts and accepts an available audio-file provider as silent success. Tests cover no-provider errors and audio-file fallback.
Initialization and supporting changes
Cargo.toml, .cargo/config.toml, Cross.toml, scripts/test_hooks.sh, src/error.rs
Initialization saves default configuration. YAML support and unused dependency features were removed. Obsolete build and hook files and the VoiceError::Llm variant were deleted.

Legacy-config users may receive an error or a fresh default configuration instead of the migration described in the README.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 50b20

Local-first defaults reduce routine cloud use. However, the suggested recovery for legacy configurations creates defaults rather than preserving existing provider restrictions. Subsequent cloud exposure requires user reinitialization, available credentials, and automatic fallback or explicit selection.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new legacy-file error suggests running sumvox init, but that command now creates default TOML without requiring --force or preserving legacy provider restrictions. For a previously local-only configuration, subsequent automatic speech can reach Google when environment credentials exist and local synthesis fails or is unavailable. This is a conditional confidentiality risk from changing configuration authority, not an unconditional disclosure or remote privilege escalation. Manual conversion preserves restrictions, and the original legacy file remains available for recovery.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified exposure is bounded to text processed by the affected user's speech configuration and the credential authority supplied to Google. Reinitialization changes provider policy; it does not itself create credentials or grant additional privileges.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A conditional disclosure path exists if a legacy installation restricted synthesis to local providers, the user follows the new init recovery hint, a Google credential is available, and subsequent automatic speech reaches cloud fallback. Speech text is then serialized into an authenticated Google request. This is a policy-reset concern; no attacker exploit or actual disclosure was demonstrated.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Legacy-only loading fails before the inspected say entrypoint invokes speech. Explicit TOML providers remain authoritative, and unavailable credentials prevent Google construction. Manual conversion therefore avoids the default-policy reset; ordinary loading does not silently replace a legacy configuration.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Configuration saving still writes directly to the destination, and init separates its existence check from saving. Interruption or concurrent initialization can therefore leave damaged or unexpectedly replaced state. These weaknesses predate the PR; malformed TOML is rejected rather than silently replaced with defaults.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate configuration conversion from reset: preserve legacy provider restrictions during conversion, and require an explicit reset decision before making cloud-capable defaults authoritative.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

The defaults that `sumvox init` writes named `macos` on every platform,
so on Linux the Notification hook failed unless the user edited it. The
local engine is now picked at compile time: macOS `say` on macOS,
espeak-ng elsewhere, matching what the Linux e2e job already uses.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Update the README legacy-config guidance.

README.md:62-63 still says that legacy YAML/JSON files are migrated and backed up. The current loader rejects legacy-only configurations, and sumvox init creates a default TOML file without migrating or backing up the legacy file.

Suggested fix
-An existing `config.yaml` or `config.json` from an older release is migrated to TOML on first run
-(the original is kept as a timestamped backup).
+Legacy `config.yaml`, `config.yml`, and `config.json` files are not migrated or backed up. Convert
+one to `config.toml`, or run `sumvox init` to create a new default configuration.
