Using pointers is cheaper because we don't have to ask for their IDs, which incurs atomic load/adds. And, by not pulling on them when not needed, we can increase ID locality a bit.

While this does increase key size for types as their IDs are only 32-bit, there does not appear to be any performance different, and only barely more memory for that one change, so I think it's probably worth avoiding the extra load.
