The compatibility reason for this closure is that React Native 0.87.1's Babel preset uses Babel 7 core and plugins. Moving the example to Babel 8 needs a coordinated review of that toolchain. Merged PR #422 now excludes standalone major updates for @babel/*, and Dependabot has closed this proposal automatically.
