docs(maproom): Postgres multi-repo, Bedrock, and --help as source of truth - #72
Conversation
…ource of truth The plugin docs described a single-repo SQLite deployment. Every diagnostic path assumed a local maproom.db, so a shared-Postgres fleet hit guidance that was not merely incomplete but actively wrong — connection-pool timeouts routed to chmod fixes for a file that does not exist on that backend. Storage model - Document both backends and how MAPROOM_DATABASE_URL selects between them - Cover the shared-Postgres fleet layout and the devcontainer trap where localhost:5433 is a throwaway instance, so indexing silently goes nowhere - Label the existing SQLite-only entries rather than deleting them Corrections to statements that were the opposite of reality - "Last scan: old date = stale index" — an unchanged git tree SHA short-circuits the scan and leaves the timestamp untouched, so an old date usually means nothing changed. Judging staleness by it causes pointless full re-scans. - "watch keeps the index fresh without manual re-scanning" — true for chunks, false for embeddings. The incremental processor deletes embeddings for changed chunks and never regenerates them, so coverage decays silently while search keeps working via full-text fallback. A periodic generate-embeddings job is required, not optional. - Provider-switch procedure had no deletion step. code_embeddings is UNIQUE on blob_sha, so blobs keep their old-dimension row, incremental runs skip them, and vector search at the new dimension cannot see them. - Ollama dimensions described as "auto-detected" and arbitrary models invited. Only 768/1024/1536 have columns and HNSW indexes; anything else cannot be stored at all. Embedding operations at scale - generate-embeddings degrades as it succeeds: its pending-chunk query is a NOT IN subquery whose cost grows with the table, against a statement_timeout fixed at 5s with no env override. It stalls when closest to finishing. Bound each pass and loop. - Note that work_mem changes that query's plan by three orders of magnitude, so reproducing it by hand in psql is misleading - One failing sub-batch fails the whole pipeline batch; keep batch size above the sub-batch threshold or provider parallelism never engages Providers - Full AWS Bedrock coverage: model dimensions and batch limits, the 256/512 rejection, Cohere v3's silent 512-token truncation, region/endpoint/FIPS config, the credential chain, and retry behavior — with an explicit caveat that Bedrock is absent from some builds - Google/Vertex uses ADC, not an API key; GEMINI_API_KEY and GOOGLE_API_KEY do nothing for it, and expired ADC fails non-interactively - Ollama's devcontainer endpoint trap (host.docker.internal, not localhost) Progressive disclosure - The entry-point skill now routes by task and by verbatim error string - Establishes the binary's own --help as the source of truth for the reader's build; the docs explain concepts, decisions and failure modes rather than mirroring flag lists that rot silently Also documents recovering a lost pm2 watcher fleet, partial scans left behind when a timeout kills one repo mid-run, and silent zero-hit results from a repo-name mismatch. Check 3 flagged every line in SKILL.md mentioning `maproom search` or
`maproom vector-search` without `--format agent`. That over-matches in two
ways, and both now trip on docs that are doing the right thing:
- `maproom search --help` prints usage text, not search results, so
`--format agent` is meaningless for it. The progressive-disclosure guidance
deliberately points readers at `--help` as the source of truth for their own
build, which the old pattern read as a violation.
- Prose mentions ("`maproom search` still returns results...") were flagged
the same as command invocations.
Check 4 already had the right semantics for the second case: it only counts a
line if it starts with the command or a `$` prompt. Check 3 now uses the same
rule, and both checks skip `--help` invocations.
The rule still fires on what it is meant to catch — a bare
`maproom search --repo foo --query "bar"` in a code block outside the Output
Formats section still fails the check (verified before committing).

💡 Result:
In the Maproom project (developed by ManifoldLogic), the GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS environment variable is used to specify the path to a Google Cloud service account JSON key file required for authenticating with the Vertex AI embedding provider [1][2]. When configuring the Google Vertex AI embedding provider within Maproom, you should ensure the following environment variables are set [1][3]: - MAPROOM_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER=google - GOOGLE_PROJECT_ID=[Your GCP Project ID] - GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS=[Path to your service account JSON key file] Maproom also supports a more specific namespace for its configuration, allowing you to use MAPROOM_GOOGLE_APPLICATION_CREDENTIALS if you wish to isolate these credentials from other tools on your system [4][3]. The provider implementation in Maproom automatically handles OAuth 2.0 authentication, regional endpoint configuration (defaulting to us-central1), and integrates with the text-embedding-004 model to generate 768-dimensional embeddings [1][5]. If the explicit environment variables are not set, the provider is designed to fall back to Application Default Credentials (ADC) [5][3].

site:cloud.google.com Google Cloud service account key expiration organization policy does not expire by default
💡 Result:
It is correct that Google Cloud service account keys do not expire by default [1][2][3]. When a user-managed service account key is created, it remains valid indefinitely until it is manually deleted [3]. To change this behavior, administrators can enforce the organization policy constraint constraints/iam.serviceAccountKeyExpiryHours [1][2][4]. When this constraint is set at the organization, folder, or project level, it forces all newly created service account keys to have a defined expiration time [5][4]. Key points regarding this policy: - Default Behavior: Service account keys have no expiration date by default [1][5]. - Enforcing Expiration: By applying constraints/iam.serviceAccountKeyExpiryHours, administrators specify the number of hours (e.g., 8h, 24h, 168h) for which new keys are valid [1][4]. - Scope: The expiration setting applies only to new keys created after the policy is enforced; it does not retroactively affect existing keys [5][3]. - Best Practice: Google recommends using short expiration times as a security measure to reduce the risk of compromised, long-lived credentials [5][3]. However, organizations should ensure they have reliable processes for rotating keys to avoid service outages when keys expire [5][4].

Qualify the service-account key lifetime claim.
Google Cloud service-account keys do not expire by default, but an organization policy can impose an expiry time. Replace “it does not expire” with “it does not expire by default,” and keep the rotation requirement. Otherwise, an unattended job can stop when policy expires the key, and operators may treat the key as permanent.

Maproom CLI 0.3.0 embedding Bedrock adapter synchronous batch inputText
💡 Result:
In Maproom CLI, the embedding service architecture provides native support for batch processing [1][2], which is handled asynchronously [3][4]. Regarding the specific integration points requested: 1. Bedrock Adapter: Maproom supports embedding providers through an extensible EmbeddingProvider trait [3][4]. While standard documentation explicitly lists Ollama, OpenAI, and Google Vertex AI as supported providers [5][6][7], the architecture is designed to be provider-agnostic [4]. If a native Bedrock adapter is not pre-implemented, custom providers can be added by implementing the EmbeddingProvider trait [4]. 2. Synchronous vs. Asynchronous: The Maproom embedding service operates asynchronously [3][4]. The EmbeddingProvider trait requires implementations to be Send + Sync to support async contexts [3][4]. While embed_batch is an async function [3][2], the service layer handles batch logic, allowing for efficient processing [2]. 3. Batch inputText: The service layer includes embed_batch, which accepts a Vec<String> of input texts [1][2]. The service performs batching optimizations, including splitting large inputs into manageable chunks based on the MAPROOM_EMBEDDING_BATCH_SIZE environment variable (default: 100) [2][6]. For further configuration, you can use the following environment variables: - MAPROOM_EMBEDDING_BATCH_SIZE: Configures the number of texts processed per API call (default: 100) [5][6]. - MAPROOM_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER: Used to specify the provider [6][7]. If you are implementing a custom Bedrock adapter, you should ensure your embed_batch implementation maps the input Vec<String> to the appropriate Bedrock API batch request format to take advantage of native batching performance [3].

💡 Result:
maproom 0.3.0 does not appear to document an AWS Bedrock/Titan embedding provider. Its EmbeddingProvider::embed_batch method is a default sequential implementation that calls embed() for each input; providers with native batching must override it.[1]
The documented providers are OpenAI, Google Vertex AI, and Ollama—not Bedrock/Titan.[1] For comparison, Bedrock Titan support documented elsewhere processes Titan inputs one request at a time, while Cohere supports native batching.[2]
let embeddings = provider
.embed_batch(vec!["first".into(), "second".into()])
.await?;This returns one vector per input, but with the default implementation it is not a Titan-native batch request.[1]
Scope the Titan batch limit to builds with a synchronous Bedrock adapter.
Maproom 0.3.0’s default EmbeddingProvider::embed_batch implementation calls embed sequentially, and its documented providers do not include Bedrock. Provider implementations can override batching. State 1 per synchronous Bedrock request and mark the Titan limit as adapter/build-specific; retain the separate pipeline-batch and concurrency guidance.

Maproom CLI Cohere embedding provider truncate Bedrock adapter source
💡 Result:
The Maproom CLI tool includes a modular embedding service that supports several providers, including Cohere [1]. Regarding your specific technical interests: 1. Cohere Embedding Provider: The Maproom CLI supports Cohere as an embedding provider [1]. Configuration requires setting the provider to "cohere" (e.g., via the MAPROOM_EMBEDDING_PROVIDER environment variable) and providing an API key via MAPROOM_COHERE_API_KEY [1]. The CLI is hardcoded to use the endpoint https://api.cohere.ai/v1/embed for this provider [1]. 2. Bedrock Adapter: Based on current documentation and source code, there is no native "Bedrock" adapter or provider explicitly mentioned in the Maproom embedding service [1][2]. The supported providers are OpenAI, Cohere, Ollama, Google (Vertex AI), and a local provider [1][3][4]. 3. Truncate Functionality: There is no explicit "truncate" configuration or feature highlighted in the embedding service's configuration or provider documentation [1][5][2]. The embedding modules focus on provider selection, API endpoint management, batch processing, and dimension validation rather than text truncation [1][6][4][2][7]. If you are looking to integrate AWS Bedrock or implement specific text truncation logic, you may need to extend the codebase by implementing the EmbeddingProvider trait, which is designed to be extensible for custom providers [6][2]. Update the Cohere and Bedrock guidance. In Maproom 0.3.0, Provider::Cohere reaches OpenAIClient::try_embed_batch without setting truncate; Cohere therefore applies its default END behavior and silently truncates inputs beyond 512 tokens. The Provider enum does not support bedrock, so remove the Bedrock-specific truncation claims or label them as external behavior, not Maproom behavior.

| These failures are **transient and self-heal on the next pass**, so a loop converges — but batch size sets the blast radius. Pick a batch size that is comfortably above the sub-batch size (so parallelism engages) but not so large that one flaky sub-batch throws away a huge pass. | ||

Do not describe every failed sub-batch as self-healing.
The text generalizes the observed transient error to all sub-batch failures, then instructs operators to loop until the pending count reaches zero. Permanent provider rejection, malformed input, or unsupported model responses can fail on every pass. Separate retryable errors from permanent errors and define bounded retry or quarantine behavior.

Make the provider-switch deletion scope explicit.
Because this cohort documents shared PostgreSQL for multiple repositories, this command is database-wide. It deletes every row at dimension 1024, and the model_version alternative is also unscoped. If an operator intends to switch one repository, embeddings for other repositories are deleted. State that provider switching is a database-wide migration and require a backup or maintenance window, or provide a repository-scoped command if the schema supports it.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Make the embedding maintenance examples enforce bounded completion.
The documentation requires bounded passes that loop until no chunks remain pending. The SKILL.md command runs one unbounded pass. The multi-repository script passes a literal placeholder flag, processes only three hardcoded repositories, suppresses failures with || true, and exits without checking that pending work reached zero. A scheduled job can therefore leave embeddings incomplete while appearing successful.

Why
These docs described a single-repo SQLite deployment. Every diagnostic path assumed a local
maproom.db, so anyone running a shared-Postgres multi-repo fleet hit guidance that was not merely incomplete but actively wrong — for example, connection-pool timeouts routed tochmodfixes for a file that does not exist on the Postgres backend.Findings come from configuring and repairing a real 15-repo fleet (~195k chunks, ~174k distinct blobs) end to end, from a dead index to 100% embedding coverage.
