Why

The same email thread is spelled EmailThread, THREAD, email, thread, and email_thread across layers. Each hop hand-rolled its own translation, and casts skipped translation entirely. That is the bug class behind #6042. This PR gives each language one translation owner and makes the cast escape hatch fail CI.

Scope

  • itemType.ts now owns every item-type spelling conversion: stringToItemType, blockNameToItemType, and DEFAULT_ITEM_TYPE move in from client.ts, next to itemTypeToReferenceEntityType, branched with ts-pattern per FE-20. client.ts re-exports.
  • Deletes the dead _isItemType guard and its itemTypeSet, which wrongly listed thread as an ItemType.
  • fetchAttachmentReferences applies itemTypeToReferenceEntityType at the API boundary. The email side panel passes the real email item type; the 'thread' as ItemType constant and its justifying comment are deleted. The wire value is unchanged.
  • Every as ItemType cast is gone. References.tsx, Timeline.tsx, FileSelector.tsx, App.tsx, dss.ts, and entityConversion.ts parse or type the value at its source. Two no-op as EntityType casts in PropertyTooltip.tsx are deleted. References.tsx imports the parser from @service-storage/itemType, keeping the runtime import off the client module (FE-01).
  • ast-grep twins ts-no-item-type-cast + tsx-no-item-type-cast (CI error, zero existing violations) ban new as ItemType casts, documented as FE-31 in docs/STYLE_GUIDE.md. They ride the existing rules/ast-grep scan in CI, just check, and CodeRabbit.
  • Rust: crates/properties domain::model::storage_entity_type is the exhaustive inverse of canonical_entity_type. service_impl.rs and permission_service.rs delete their duplicate maps and delegate. A new canonical entity type now fails to compile until someone decides its properties storage.

Out of scope, deliberately: making the liberal string parsers strict (ReferencedShareItemType::from_raw, entity-access parse_entity_type alias). That needs a producer-by-producer migration wave first. The notification.entity_type as EntityType cast in notifications/types.ts targets the core EntityType union and needs its own look.

Tradeoffs

toItemType in Timeline.tsx now returns undefined for entity refs with no item-preview surface (user, team, static_file, reminder, skill, agent_session) instead of passing a string no preview fetcher handles. Both render as inaccessible; the fetch path differs.

An earlier revision enforced the cast ban as a biome GritQL plugin. It worked, but rules/ast-grep is the repo's one home for custom structural rules, so a later commit moves the rule there and deletes the plugin.

Blast Radius

One behavior fix rides along: generic reference rows storing email threads as thread or email_thread previewed as inaccessible because References.tsx cast the raw string. They now parse to email and resolve. Everything else is behavior-preserving and pinned.

Verification

  • just check passes. The one warning is the pre-existing @service-unfurl/client import in PropertyTooltip.tsx, a legacy finding surfaced because the file changed (the rule tracks ~110 legacy files for burn-down).
  • Pin tests written against the pre-move code first (itemType.test.ts): stringToItemType on all three thread spellings, blockNameToItemType per block, referencium round trip per item type. 39 pass before and after the move and again after the ts-pattern conversion (bun test, inside nix develop).
  • cargo test -p properties against live Postgres: 210 passed, 0 failed. The new round-trip test covers every variant both ways, including Task → Document.
  • bunx tsc --noEmit: clean. bunx biome check src/: clean.
  • ast-grep verified both ways: probe .ts and .tsx files with a cast fail the scan as error[ts-no-item-type-cast] / error[tsx-no-item-type-cast]; the full tree has zero findings.
  • Runtime equivalence on the same Properties-panel surface as withdrawn: Subject fallback for failed email Source previews #6042, three real PDFs via headless Chrome: owned thread still resolves Partnering with Macro at our AI hackathon; missing-thread and message-id docs still show Unknown thread, matching main.

Characterize stringToItemType, blockNameToItemType, and the referencium
round trip before the maps move into itemType.ts.

stringToItemType, blockNameToItemType, and DEFAULT_ITEM_TYPE move from
client.ts next to itemTypeToReferenceEntityType, so one module owns
every entity-type spelling conversion. client.ts re-exports them.

Generic reference rows store email threads as thread or email_thread,
so the ItemType cast produced a type no preview fetcher handles and the
row rendered as inaccessible. stringToItemType already parses all three
spellings to email.

storage_entity_type in domain::model is the exhaustive inverse of
canonical_entity_type, so a new canonical entity type fails to compile

covers every variant both ways.

fetchAttachmentReferences now applies itemTypeToReferenceEntityType, so
the email side panel passes the real 'email' item type and the lying
'thread' as ItemType constant goes away; the wire value is unchanged.
entityConversion, Timeline, FileSelector, App, and dss type the value at
its source instead of casting. Timeline entity refs with no item type
(user, team, static_file, reminder, skill, agent_session) now pass
undefined instead of a string no preview fetcher handles; both render
as inaccessible.

A GritQL plugin fails biome check on `as ItemType`, so entity-type
strings must go through stringToItemType. Casting is how referencium's
thread spelling reached the preview loader as a type it cannot fetch.

📝 Walkthrough

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Corrected email attachment references to use the appropriate email entity type.
    • Improved handling of entity and item types across previews, references, properties, and bulk actions.
    • Added support for legacy email-thread type spellings and safer handling of unsupported types.
    • Improved mapping between block names and item types, including common aliases.
  • Refactor

    • Consolidated item-type conversion and storage-entity mapping for more consistent behavior across the application.
  • Tests

    • Added coverage for type conversion, legacy values, block mappings, and storage-entity round trips.

Walkthrough

The web application centralizes item-type parsing and block-name conversion, removes unchecked item-type casts, and maps item types before storage requests. Email references now use the email entity type. The properties crate adds a shared mapping from canonical access entity types to storage entity types, tests supported and unsupported mappings, and updates subject resolution and permission checks to use the helper.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1c965

The PR centralizes entity-type conversions and preserves the reviewed authorization and preview behavior. No actionable merge-blocking risk remains after normal checks and review.

Use an exhaustive match for EntityRef['type'].

Replace the switch and its catch-all default with match(type).with(...).exhaustive(). The current default returns new enum variants without requiring a preview decision.

rules/ast-grep is the repo's one home for custom structural rules, so
the biome GritQL plugin goes and ts/tsx twin rules replace it, wired to

FE-20 says exhaustive branching uses match. stringToItemType,
blockNameToItemType, and Timeline's toItemType convert. References
imports stringToItemType from @service-storage/itemType so the runtime
import stays off the client module (FE-01).
