Run Elixir in a worker owned by the result window so LiveReload edits reuse the booted AtomVM instead of recreating the runtime. Coalesce rapid runs, supersede blocked evaluations, recover from VM crashes, and expose tagged stdout/stderr/value/error results. Add the language spec, starter template, isolation headers, Playwright lifecycle coverage, runtime benchmarks, and documentation for the pinned Elixir 1.17.3/AtomVM runtime and its limitations. Add a NOSONAR annotation with the reason for the indirect eval used by AtomVM's JS interop. This addresses the SonarCloud security gate without changing runtime behavior.

IFrame credentialless provides a mechanism for developers to load third-party resources in `<iframe>`s using a new, ephemeral context. It doesn't have access to its regular origin's network, cookies, and storage data. It uses a new context local to the top-level document lifetime. In return, the `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` (COEP) embedding rules can be lifted, so documents with COEP set can embed third-party documents that do not.

## The problem
Various web API features can only be used on sites that opt in to cross-origin isolation — examples include `SharedArrayBuffer` and high-resolution timers. This is because of the risk of such features being exploited in Spectre attacks, where a victim's confidential information can be leaked via a side channel and captured by an attacker.
To opt in to cross-origin isolation, a resource must be served with a `Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy` with a value of `same-origin` (protects your origin from attackers) and `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` with a value of `credentialless` or `require-corp` (protects victims from your origin). The latter prevents a document from loading any credentialed cross-origin resources that don't explicitly grant the document permission using `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy` or Cross-Origin Resource Sharing.
The key issue limiting the adoption of cross-origin isolation is the fact that `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` is applied recursively — any third-party content loaded into `<iframe>`s in a document with a `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` set must also deploy `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` for the embedding to succeed. This is a problem for developers embedding third-party content in their apps (such as ad-network content) as they generally have no control over it — their only choice up to now has been to wait for the third-party content providers to implement `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy`.
This problem can be solved by IFrame credentialless.
## The solution — Iframe credentialless
An `<iframe>` is made credentialless by applying the `credentialless` attribute to it, or setting the equivalent DOM property — `HTMLIFrameElement.credentialless` — to `true`.

<title>Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy (COEP) header - HTTP | MDN</title>
<location>https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTTP/Reference/Headers/Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy</location>
<excerpt>citeturn0search1 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: yesterday; To use these features in a document, you will need to set the COEP header with a value of `require-corp` or `credentialless`, and the `Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy` header to `same-origin`. ... If CORS is not supported for some images, a COEP value of `credentialless` can be used as an alternative to load the image without any explicit opt-in from the cross-origin server, at the cost of requesting it without cookies.
# Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy (COEP) header
The HTTP `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` (COEP) response header configures the current document's policy for loading and embedding cross-origin resources that are requested in `no-cors` mode.
Note that the embedding policy for requests made in `cors` mode are controlled by CORS.
Header type | Response header
## Syntax
http
`Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: <token>; <parameter>
`
### Directives
The header should only be set with just one token and an optional `report-to` endpoint. Setting the header more than once or with multiple tokens is equivalent to setting `unsafe-none`.
The `<token>` value can be one of:
`unsafe-none`
Allows the document to load cross-origin resources requested in `no-cors` mode without giving explicit permission through the `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy` header. This is the default value.
`require-corp`
A document can only load resources requested in `no-cors` mode from the same origin, or resources that have explicitly set the `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy` header to a value that allows it to be embedded.
Cross-origin resource loading will be blocked by COEP unless:
* The resource is requested in `no-cors` mode and the response includes a `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy` header that allows it to be loaded into the document origin.
* The resource is requested in `cors` mode; for example, in HTML using the `crossorigin` attribute, or in JavaScript by making a request with `{mode="cors"}`. Note that requests made in `cors` mode won't be blocked by COEP or trigger COEP violations, but must still be permitted by CORS.
`credentialless`
A document can load cross-origin resources that are requested in `no-cors` mode without an explicit permission via the `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy` header. In this case requests are sent without credentials: cookies are omitted in the request, and ignored in the response.
The cross-origin loading behavior for other request modes is the same as for `require-corp`. For example, a cross-origin resource requested in `cors` mode must support (and be permitted by) CORS.
The `<parameter>` is optional, and can be one of:
`report-to <endpoint_name>` Optional
The `<endpoint_name>` is the name of the endpoint to which policy violations will be sent. The mapping between the name and a particular endpoint is defined separately in the `Reporting-Endpoints` HTTP header.
## Description
The policy for whether a particular resource is embeddable cross-site may be defined for that resource using the `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy` (CORP) header in a response to a `no-cors` fetch, or using CORS. If neither of these policies are set, then by default, resources can be loaded or embedded into a document as though they had a CORP value of `cross-origin` (meaning that they can be loaded cross origin).
The `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` allows you to require that CORP headers be set, in responses to `no-cors` requests, in order to load cross-site resources into the current document. You can also set the policy to keep the default behavior, or to allow the resources to be loaded, but strip any credentials that might otherwise be sent. The policy applies to loaded resources, and resources in `<iframe>`s and nested frames.
Note: The `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` doesn't override or affect the embedding behavior for a resource for which CORP or CORS has been set. If…[truncated]</excerpt>

`"corp"`
A document with `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` set to `require-corp` attempted to load a cross-origin sub-resource that does not explicitly allow itself to be embedded (by setting an appropriate `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy`).
`"navigation"`
An `<iframe>` in a document that has either COEP `require-corp` or `credentialless` directives loads a document that:
* Has neither the COEP `require-corp` nor `credentialless` directive
* Is cross-origin with the embedding document, and does not have a CORP header that allows embedding in the parent
`"worker initialization"`
A dedicated worker created by a document with either the COEP `require-corp` or `credentialless` directives tries to load a worker script with neither of these set.
`blockedURL`
A string containing the URL of the resource that was blocked from loading by an enforced COEP violation.
`destination`
A string indicating the destination of the blocked resource. This can have one of the values of `Request.destination`.
`disposition`
A string indicating whether the violation was enforced or only reported. This can have one of the following values:
`"enforce"`
The violation caused loading of the embedded resource to be blocked. This is set for violations of policies set with `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy`.
`"reporting"`
The violation was reported without blocking the resource from loading. This is set for violations of policies set with `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy-Report-Only`.
`type`
The string `"coep"`, indicating that this is a COEP violation report.
`url`
A string representing the URL of the document that generated the report.
## Description
A document's policies for loading and embedding cross-origin resources that are requested in `no-cors` mode are configured and enforced using the `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` HTTP header, and may also be reported but not enforced using the `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy-Report-Only` header.
COEP policy violations may be reported whenever a policy set by those headers blocks (or would block) the loading of a resource.
You can monitor for COEP violation reports within the page that sets the policy using the Reporting API. To do this you create a `ReportingObserver` object to listen for reports, passing a callback method and an (optional) `options` property specifying the types of reports that you want to report on. The callback method is then called with reports of the requested types, passing a report object. For COEP violations, the object will be a `COEPViolationReport` (which has the `type` property set to `"coep"`).
The structure of a typical report is shown below. ## Examples
### Using the `ReportingObserver` interface
This example shows how you can obtain COEP violation reports using a `ReportingObserver`.
First consider the case where we have an HTML file hosted on the origin `https://example.com`, which includes an `<img>` element that sets as its source the (cross-origin) resource `some-image.png`. Since the element does not set the `crossorigin` attribute, it will be requested in `no-cors` mode. By default, if `some-image.png` is not served with the `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` header, this request will succeed.
html
`<img src="https://another-example.com/some-image.png" />
`
In order to ensure that the document only loads cross-origin resources that indicate that they are safe to load in our document origin, we can set the `Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy` header with the `require-corp` directive as sho…[truncated]</excerpt>

There are two types of messages: requests sent by the client to trigger an action on the server, and responses, the answer that the server sends in response to a request.
HTTP range requests
An HTTP `Range` request asks the server to send parts of a resource back to a client. Range requests are useful for various clients, including media players that support random access, data tools that require only part of a large file, and download managers that let users pause and resume a download.

Other requests sent with credentials require the server's explicit permission through the CORS protocol or the ``Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy`` header.
Before supporting "`credentialless`", implementers are strongly encouraged to support both:
* Private Network Access
* Opaque Response Blocking
Otherwise, it would allow attackers to leverage the client's network position to read non public resources, using the cross-origin isolated capability.
An embedder policy value is compatible with cross-origin isolation if it is "`credentialless`" or "`require-corp`".
An embedder policy consists of:
* A value, which is an embedder policy value, initially "`unsafe-none`".
* A reporting endpoint string, initially the empty string.
* A report-only value, which is an embedder policy value, initially "`unsafe-none`".
* A report-only reporting endpoint string, initially the empty string.
The "`coep`" report type is a report type whose value is "`coep`". It is visible to `ReportingObserver`s.
##### 7.1.4.1 The headers
The ``Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy`` and ``Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy-Report-Only`` HTTP response headers allow a server to declare an embedder policy for an environment settings object. These headers are structured headers whose values must be a token. [STRUCTURED-FIELDS]
The valid token values are the embedder policy values. The token may also have attached parameters; of these, the "`report-to`" parameter can have a string value that is the name of an appropriate endpoint.
5. If `ownerPolicy`'s value is not compatible with cross-origin isolation or `policy`'s value is compatible with cross-origin isolation, then return true.
6. Queue a cross-origin embedder policy inheritance violation with `response`, "`worker initialization`", `ownerPolicy`'s reporting endpoint, "`enforce`", and `owner`.
7. Return false.
To queue a cross-origin embedder policy inheritance violation given a response `response`, a string `type`, a string `endpoint`, a string `disposition`, and an environment settings object `settings`:
1. Let `serialized` be the result of serializing a response URL for reporting with `response`.
2. Let `body` be a new object containing the following properties:
key | value
--- | ---
type | `type`
blockedURL | `serialized`
disposition | `disposition`
3. Queue `body` as the "`coep`" report type for `endpoint` on `settings`.
#### 7.1.5 Sandboxing
A sandboxing flag set is a set of zero or more of the following flags, which are used to restrict the abilities that potentially untrusted resources have:
The sandboxed navigation browsing context flag
This flag prevents content from navigating browsing contexts other than the sandboxed browsing context itself (or browsing contexts further nested inside it), auxiliary browsing contexts (which are protected by the sandboxed auxiliary navigation browsing context flag defined next), and the top-level browsing context (which is protected by the sandboxed top-level navigation without user activation browsing context flag and sandboxed top-level navigation with user activation browsing context flag defined below).

Deploy compatible sandbox headers before enabling global COEP.
Production uses https://livecodes-sandbox.pages.dev/v9/ for result, Quill, and Blockly frames, and /v9/compiler for compiler frames. These responses currently return without Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy or Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy. The app now sends Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: credentialless, which applies recursively to cross-origin iframe navigations. These frames can therefore be blocked, preventing result and compiler pages from loading in production.
Deploy the sandbox with Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: credentialless and Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy: cross-origin before enabling global app COEP. If the sandbox deployment cannot be updated in this change, defer the global COEP change for pages that embed this sandbox.

Do not apply COOP globally while login uses signInWithPopup.
src/_headers applies COOP: same-origin to every route. The application still calls Firebase signInWithPopup, and src/netlify.toml states that this policy severs popup/opener links. This can make login fail and block workflows that require authentication.
Use signInWithRedirect, or scope the isolation headers to the result/sandbox response while preserving isolation there.

Caution
This PR makes cross-origin isolation a requirement for the entire app, and the chosen COOP: same-origin breaks the app's only sign-in flow for every deployment that ships these headers. Details inline; the rollout concern is below.
Reviewed changes
- Elixir runtime: pass-through compiler plus a result-frame bridge that owns a persistent AtomVM module worker; tagged base64 result protocol, group-leader stdin/IO, 60 s eval and 10 s supersede timeouts, run coalescing, crash recovery, and the
livecodes.elixirAPI (input,loaded,output,value,warnings,error,exitCode,run,retry). - Worker: vendored Popcorn/AtomVM runtime adapted to
selfmessaging, a blob-hosted Emscripten module viamainScriptUrlOrBlob, and aglobalThis.windowshim for the prebuilt Elixir boot code. - Cross-origin isolation:
COOP: same-origin/COEP: credentialless/CORP: cross-originadded to the app's static and Netlify configs, new isolation middleware for both dev servers, andcross-origin-isolatedadded to the SDK iframeallowlist. - Registration and docs: language spec, editor grammars, starter template and logo, template/language/script-type unions, command menu, docs page, benchmark notes, vendor licenses, README count, storybook, and i18n keys in all 18 locales.
- Tests: unit coverage for the spec/bridge markers and a Playwright suite for lifecycle, IO, errors, rapid edits, crash recovery, failed boot, stdin, empty source, and headers.
⚠️ The isolation requirement is app-wide, but the sandbox origin still has to opt in
The result frame runs on the separate sandbox origin, and the app's headers cannot isolate it — every document in the ancestor chain, including the sandbox page itself, must send COOP/COEP. That deployment lives outside this repo, so until it sends the same three headers, Elixir cannot boot on livecodes.io even though the app side is correct. The current e2e "production headers" test only reads src/_headers and queries the dev sandbox, so it cannot detect that gap.
Technical details
# Sandbox deployment must send the isolation headers
## Affected sites
- `src/_headers`, `src/netlify.toml` — isolate the app origin only
- `scripts/serve-sandbox.js` / `scripts/sandbox-headers.js` — dev sandbox only
- `e2e/specs/elixir-wasm.spec.ts` — asserts `src/_headers` contents and the dev sandbox response
## Required outcome
- The production sandbox deployment sends `Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy: same-origin`,
`Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy: credentialless`, and `Cross-Origin-Resource-Policy: cross-origin`
before this language is announced as available.
- A check against the deployed sandbox origin, or an explicit release note, so the gap is not

If await initPromise rejects, boot() throws before await startPromise, and the catch calls stopWorker(), which rejects the unobserved startPromise as well. That leaves an unhandled promise rejection on every failed boot. Attach a no-op catch to startPromise (or settle it before throwing) so boot failures stay a single handled error.
Technical details
# Failed boot leaks an unhandled rejection
## Affected sites
- `src/livecodes/languages/elixir-wasm/lang-elixir-wasm-script.ts:439-458` — `initPromise` /
`startPromise` created together, only the first awaited; `stopWorker()` rejects both
## Required outcome
- A failed init (timeout, worker error, `popcorn-fatal`) produces no unhandled rejection while
still rejecting the `loaded` promise and leaving `retry()` usable.|

Thanks for the review, @hatemhosny. I’ve removed the unnecessary Why the isolation requirement exists The AtomVM WebAssembly build is compiled with pthreads and uses
Options
My recommendation Don’t remove the headers in this PR. Keep COOP/COEP as the safe default, add DIP as a progressive enhancement for Chromium embeds with a clear fallback for other browsers, and investigate a no-pthread build as the long-term fix. Would you prefer that I proceed with DIP + fallback, or hold the isolation work and start with the no-pthread investigation? I’m happy to adjust based on your preference. |
COOP/COEP requires every parent page to also have these headers. This is something I cannot enforce on pages that embed the playground. In addition, we should not break popup-based OAuth since users may want to experiment with that in LiveCodes. Rejected. Document-Isolation-Policy is a good option (when it works). It is Chromium desktop only. Not ideal (at least till there is better browser support) Build AtomVM without pthreads: significant work, however this completely solves the issue. I had the same problem with Lean4 and I managed to get a single-threaded build and it worked. This is my prefered option. "Disable the feature" is adding a language that does not work. Not an option. |
|
Thanks @hatemhosny — understood, and I agree with the direction. I’m going with the no-pthread build to remove the Erlang support is also complete on a separate branch and inherits the same isolation blocker; I’ll open that PR once this is resolved. Thanks for the Lean4 pointer — if you have any notes or patches from that work, they’d save me time. I’ll report back as soon as possible with a working build or a concrete blocker. |

I'm not sure if that applies to Elixir, but here you are: |

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
The 120-second test timeout makes the 180-second boot wait unreachable.
Line 135 sets a 120-second timeout for each test. Line 141 waits up to 180 seconds for the cold boot. Playwright stops the test at 120 seconds, so the longer wait is never used. That 120-second limit must also cover the boot and about eight more runs. On a slow CI runner, the test fails with a generic test timeout instead of the state dump from waitForState. Raise the test timeout so it covers the boot wait plus the later runs.

Keep blank stdin lines; trim: true drops all of them.
String.split(..., trim: true) removes every empty segment, including empty segments between lines. For stdin "a\n\nb", the device returns "a\n", then "b\n", then :eof. A blank line is never returned as "\n". Programs that read blank lines get shifted input in both Elixir (IO.gets) and Erlang (io:get_line). Only the trailing empty segment should be dropped.

Detect modules after leading whitespace and comments.
actionFor checks only for a literal -module( at offset 0. Module files often start with a header comment (%%% @doc ...) or a blank line. Important
The new commit removes cross-origin-isolated from the SDK iframe allow list but leaves the unit test that asserts it, so npm run test:unit fails. One inline fix plus a minor tsconfig cleanup.
Reviewed changes
Changes since the prior pullfrog review (e1a6fe7 → a6d122f):
- Dropped cross-origin isolation: removed COOP/COEP from
src/_headers,src/netlify.tomland both dev-server middlewares, removedcross-origin-isolatedfrom the SDK iframe allow list, and switched to the single-threaded@hmh-3080/atomvm-wasm@0.1.0build (noSharedArrayBuffer/pthreads).CORP: cross-originremains for cross-origin SDK embeds. - Added Erlang (Wasm): language spec, result-frame wrapper (
eval_erlang/eval_erlang_module, trailing-dot strip, haltrewrite), starter template, docs, i18n, storybook, and an e2e suite. - Shared Beam runtime: extracted the Elixir runtime into
beam-wasm/runtime.ts+prelude.ts+ the worker, parameterized by per-language config. - Dev servers: replaced the
live-serverCLI withscripts/serve-app.js/scripts/serve-sandbox.jsthat load the header middleware by absolute path.

This include entry points at elixir-wasm/lang-elixir-wasm-worker.raw.js, which was moved to beam-wasm/lang-beam-wasm-worker.raw.js in this commit. The old path no longer exists and the new worker is not listed. Update the entry so the worker stays part of the tsconfig program.
Technical details
# tsconfig include references the pre-refactor worker path
## Affected sites
- `tsconfig.json:59` — `"src/livecodes/languages/elixir-wasm/lang-elixir-wasm-worker.raw.js"` (file deleted; now `src/livecodes/languages/beam-wasm/lang-beam-wasm-worker.raw.js`)
## Required outcome
- The include list names the current worker file. `tsc --noEmit` currently passes because the new worker carries `// @ts-nocheck`, so this is cleanup rather than a build break. There was a problem hiding this comment.
✅ No new issues found.

Move the setConfigAndRun step out of the mixed direct-run test into its own test so a delayed LiveReload rewrite can no longer supersede subsequent direct runs (which caused runId shifts and 120s waits in CI).

The config-edit liveness check moved into its own test (line 236), so this name now overstates what remains here and the test no longer asserts VM reuse at all. Rename it to match the assertions that are actually left.

Summary
Adds Elixir (Wasm) and Erlang (Wasm) support using a shared
beam-wasmruntime and asingle-threaded AtomVM build. Code runs entirely in the browser in a persistent worker owned by
the result page. The worker survives result-document rewrites, so edits reuse the booted VM.
The runtime is built without Emscripten pthreads: it does not use
SharedArrayBuffer, doesnot require COOP/COEP, works in normal cross-origin iframes, and keeps popup-based OAuth working.
