livecodes.swift.loaded is documented as rejecting when the toolchain fails to load, but the implementation can only resolve — so failure handling never fires, and the starter ends up dereferencing a null output. Details inline; one minor robustness note alongside.
Reviewed changes
- Swift (Wasm) language — new
swift-wasmspec and runtime glue that loads the external@live-codes/swift-wasmruntime, exposes thelivecodes.swifthelper API, and enablesliveReload/largeDownload. - Starter template —
swift-wasmstarter (logo, stdin-driven counter) wired into the template list, command menu, storybook, and the generated templates/vendor JSON. - Registration & i18n — language registry,
scriptType/TemplateAlias/Language/TemplateNametypes, en locale strings, iife build entry, language info section. - Docs & tests — new language docs page, language sliders/template list, e2e starter test, README count badge (109 → 110), vendor license entry.
ℹ️ loaded is documented as rejecting on failure but cannot reject
swift.loaded is a new Promise((resolve) => …) with no reject path, yet the docs and the starter both rely on rejection when the environment fails to load. On boot failure (including the SwiftUnsupportedError the runtime throws on unsupported browsers), run's catch calls setResult(null, 'Error: …', 1), which sets ready = true, so loaded resolves and the starter then dereferences a null output, producing an opaque TypeError rather than the boot error.
Technical details
# `loaded` never rejects on boot failure
## Affected sites
- `src/livecodes/languages/swift-wasm/lang-swift-wasm-script.ts:172-179` — Promise executor takes only `resolve`
- `src/livecodes/languages/swift-wasm/lang-swift-wasm-script.ts:95-99` — `ensureLoaded` catch resets `swift.init` but records no failure state
- `docs/docs/languages/swift-wasm.mdx:49` — says the promise "(and rejects if it fails to load)"
- `src/livecodes/templates/starter/swift-wasm-starter.ts:27,30` — `await loaded` then `update(livecodes.swift.output)`
## Required outcome
- Awaiting `livecodes.swift.loaded` rejects with the boot error when the runtime/toolchain cannot load.
- The starter surfaces that failure instead of dereferencing a null `output`.
## Suggested approach
- Follow `lang-zig-wasm-script.ts:282-292`: add a `failed`/`error` flag on the `swift` namespace, set it in the `ensureLoaded` catch, and have the `loaded` poll reject when it is set.ℹ️ Run timeout does not recover the runtime
withTimeout around swift.runtime.run(...) rejects the glue's promise but leaves the underlying run going. The package has no per-run timeout and dispatches every run to a single worker, so a hung program (e.g. while true {}) keeps that worker busy — each subsequent run also hangs and times out, and because swift.runtime/swift.init are cached on the namespace, the stuck worker survives live reloads too.
Technical details
# Run-timeout leaves the worker busy
## Affected sites
- `src/livecodes/languages/swift-wasm/lang-swift-wasm-script.ts:143-147` — `withTimeout` rejects but the package's `run` promise is never settled and the worker keeps executing
- `src/livecodes/languages/swift-wasm/lang-swift-wasm-script.ts:78-105` — `ensureLoaded` caches `swift.runtime`, so the stuck worker is reused
## Required outcome
- After a run timeout, the next run can start from a fresh worker.
## Suggested approach
- The package exposes `runtime.destroy()` (terminates the worker and clears pending). On timeout, call it and null `swift.runtime`/`swift.init` so `ensureLoaded` re-creates the runtime.
- `lang-zig-wasm-script.ts:192-200` already tears down the worker on run timeout for the same reason.DeepSeek Flash (free via Pullfrog for OSS) | 𝕏

Set the whole-test timeout above the first-download budget.
playwright.config.ts sets the test timeout to 60 seconds. test.slow() increases it to 180 seconds, but the Swift test allows 280 seconds for the first download. Set the timeout explicitly above 280 seconds.

Handle failed Swift runs before splitting output.
If the initial compile or toolchain load fails, swift.run returns output: null. update then throws at output.split, and the starter button remains disabled. The click handler has the same failure path. Check the returned error or output before parsing it, and show a recoverable error state.

Description
This PR adds Swift (Wasm) support as the language
swift-wasm.Demo: https://swift.livecodes.pages.dev/?template=swift-wasm
Swift is compiled to WebAssembly by the Swift compiler itself, running on WebAssembly:
swift-frontendcompiles thesource and LLVM's
wasm-ldlinks the result, driven from the result page. No backend is involved. The native
swiftcis a driver that spawns the frontend and the linker as subprocesses, and WebAssembly cannot spawnprocesses. The two therefore run as separate WebAssembly modules over a shared in-memory filesystem. That driver is
packaged as
@live-codes/swift-wasm(source:https://github.com/live-codes/browser-swift) and loaded from the CDN by the language, and it consumes the pinned
swift-toolchain-wasmartifacts (Swift 6.3.3, Apache-2.0 withRuntime Library Exception).
What is included:
src/livecodes/languages/swift-wasm/), registered inlanguages.ts, withscriptType: 'text/swift-wasm'livecodes.swifthelper API:input, loaded, ready, output, error, exitCode, run(input)liveReloadsupport — the runtime and its worker are reused across runs instead of being reinitialized?template=swift-wasm) with a logo, a "Hello, Swift!" heading and a click counter driven bystandard input, plus a thumbnail SVG
count badge (109 → 110)

Notes for reviewers
Multi-file. LiveCodes does not support multi-file editors yet, so the glue passes a single source string (treated
as
main.swift). The runtime already acceptsArray<{ filename, content }>, and each file would be compiled as theprimary of a batch with the module's other files alongside it. Enabling it after #934 lands is a one-line change in
lang-swift-wasm-script.ts— nothing else in this PR needs to change. Why the driver is a separate package. Publishing the toolchain as an npm package keeps the app bundle untouched and
lets the ~70 MB of artifacts be lazily fetched, pinned by SHA-256, and cached by the CDN. The artifacts ship gzipped and
are inflated in the client, so the transfer is ~70 MB rather than ~301 MB, and the modules are fetched with
WebAssembly.compileStreamingso the engine can cache the compiled result.Known limitations, documented in the language docs: macros and compiler plugins cannot work (they are spawned
processes), the Swift-implemented optimizer passes are disabled, there is a 4 GiB address space limit, and programs are
single-file.
