Cycle 0059: a server run is saved as a learning replay and replayed with its request, executed source and recorded debugger values #147

Closed

Description

@ryota-murakami

Outcome

A learner who asked /codebook how the repository's own Node HTTP server handles a request can save that explanation as a learning replay and replay it later: the recorded request and server output, the source that actually executed at each stop in a native source editor, and the recorded values, scopes and call stack in the native debugger, all moved by one playhead, with the learning summary and sequence diagram in place of the chat. Today a server run is refused at Save (Server runs are not saved yet: there is no learning replay to save.) and everything it captured disappears when the server stops.

This is a feature cycle (AGENTS.md Cycle rule). Cycle 0058 (#143) closed with nothing carried, and the owner lifted its pause (D6) with the /goal message of 2026-10-28. The increment is O2, named by #139 and #143 as the next feature cycle. This body is the plan approved by /autoplan (run codex-cycle-0059-20261028-114645: CEO, Design, DX and Eng reviews, each with a Claude and a Codex voice); item 8b's engineering contracts govern where items 1–8 are less specific, and the Accepted review obligations list records what each review added (later bullets state their replacements).

  • Learner. A server or API explanation is no longer lost when the server stops: Save learning replay works for it, the library lists it as a Server replay (POST /api/… → 200, complete or partial), and opening it steps through request, stops, output and response without resending the request or starting the server.
  • Agent. The skill (1.0.53) tells the chat to save the server explanation's question, summary and evidence-classified sequence through the existing codebook_explain_node_history, citing the request, stop, output and response entries of the server history; MCP API 1.9 (additive).
  • Engineering. The durable node history store and replay path that node-test runs use are generalized to a second profile. The server run already captures a full redacted debugger snapshot at every stop hit (VscodeNodeServerDebugger.capture, src/vscodeNodeServerDebugger.ts:600); this cycle writes those captures, the request, the output and the response to disk as they happen, seals them, and replays them.

Gap audit (all 13 rows, baseline origin/main 250ade84, v0.2.53.0, 2026-10-28)

Product source changed since #139's audit (5b992ea5, v0.2.49.0) only in Cycle 0057's server profile and redaction contract (#140, #141, #142), Cycle 0058's fixes (#144) and the retro tooling (#146, scripts only). The rows below were rechecked against that diff; rows marked "regression only" have no source change since their proof except the redaction of captured values (#140), whose replay tests stayed green.

Row (a) Implementation (b) Proof (c) Next action
AC-LIVE Match, narrow: repository-browser, node-test, node-server (one unauthenticated request per run); captured values redacted in every profile. N57 VS Code + Cursor (#139), N58 VS Code (#143), macOS, development target. Regression: persisting captures must not change live behavior.
AC-SAVE Match for browser and test runs. Server runs refused (src/utils/refuseSavingServerRun.ts:10, called at src/studyWorkspace.ts:11381); the record is historyExcluded: 'server-run-not-saved' (src/service.ts:424). N54 both hosts (browser, test); server refusal: unit tests only. This cycle.
AC-REPLAY Match for browser and test replays. No server replay: isTestReplayStudy matches node-test records only (studyWorkspace.ts:11869); the store header is fixed to profile: 'node-test' (src/nodeTestHistorySchemas.ts:44). N56 (Cursor), N52/N54. This cycle.
AC-GAPS Match (4A in browser and test replays; test timeline marks unrecorded intervals, TIMELINE_COVERAGE_TEXT.gapTitle). N50 both hosts. This cycle: the same 4A behavior between server stops.
AC-LEARNING Minor mismatch: understanding is per article and per test history; no per-step I understand this step (E8, image region 2). N49, N50. Product gap, open in this ledger (not a defect of a cycle, so no bug-fix carry). Server replay gets per-history understanding (D7), which does not close this row; E8 is the first later candidate.
AC-WIKI Match. N55, N56. Regression only (llmWikiView flicker fix #144 has its own tests).
AC-WIKI-UPDATE Match. N55, N56. Regression only.
AC-SOURCE-LINKS Match. N55 both hosts. Regression only.
AC-ENTRY Match. N55, N56 step 5. Regression: the library lists one more replay kind.
AC-DESKTOP Match at D034 on macOS. macOS only. The per-system cycle goal v10 owes.
AC-SHORTCUTS Partial: no contributes.keybindings (checked: extension/package.json contributes has no key). Test replay transport keys exist. N55 (Wiki ? list). Product gap, open in this ledger. Server replay reuses the test replay transport keys; keybindings stay a later candidate.
AC-SKILL Match; 1.0.52 says server runs are not saved. N57, N58. This cycle: 1.0.53 server save route.
AC-REAL-PROJECTS Large mismatch. Server form live only (P07 Express: real-process evidence, native not run; P08 Hono: N57/N58). Missing: server save/replay, Chrome MV3 (P06, P07), Vite/Expo web UI, Pages Router (P01), Node Examples. Development target only. This cycle: server save/replay (P08 clone, development evidence only).

Why this increment now. Final acceptance step 3 requires every explained real-project path to pass replay acceptance once saved. The server rows of P07 and P08 can never pass while a server run cannot be saved, so this blocks the core live-to-learning experience for a whole execution form; E8 and keybindings are polish on features that already work.

Reach of this increment (what it does not prove). A server run is one unauthenticated declared request (src/nodeServerConfigSchemas.ts:43) to a server only Codebook calls (src/nodeServerHelp.ts:203). So this increment makes a single-request server explanation replayable; it does not make an authenticated route, a multi-request flow or a browser-to-server explanation replayable, and closing the P07/P08 server rows still depends on their final paths fitting one unauthenticated request. Task 0 inventories this before code; the history header carries formatVersion: 1, the instance and run identities and the repository revision, so a later cycle can relate several histories of one explanation without a format break.

Implementation details

  1. One node history store, two profiles. Generalize NodeTestHistoryStore and NodeTestHistoryWriter over a profile through an optional constructor parameter (default node-test, so existing callers and tests need no edit). The profile seam is one plain descriptor per profile (folder name, header and entry schemas, order rules, seal reasons, summary projection, learner-event projection and text catalog), passed to the store; node-test's descriptor wraps today's code unchanged and node-server's is new, so a later execution form adds a descriptor instead of branches: node-test keeps node-tests.v1/ byte for byte (no migration, existing replays open unchanged); node-server writes node-servers.v1/<instanceId>_<runId>/ with the same seven files, the same fsync, writer lock (writer.json, so another window lists a live server history as recording) and entry and byte bounds. Server histories count against the one saved-study limit every saved study and test history already shares (reserve, src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:437), not a separate one; a full store refuses the history (not the run) with the existing full-store message, which becomes the cause shown below. Deleting a server replay uses the existing saved-study deletion (Trash, other-window refusal) unchanged. When the learning storage is unavailable or the start is refused, the live server run still starts (D8), the status reads <server state> · Learning replay unavailable: <cause> and Save answers with that cause; nothing is written. The header is a union discriminated by profile (node-server header carries the nodeServerConfigSchema configuration, its SHA-256, the declared request and stops, instance, run, question, repository revision and source hashes, start time).

  2. Server entries (zod, beside src/nodeTestHistorySchemas.ts), each with sequence and elapsedMs since launch:

    • output {channel, text ≤ 4,096} (already redacted by the run's output redactor);
    • request {method, path, bodyBytes} (exactly one, before any stop): appended in the same synchronous step that opens the request window (setRequestWindow(true), src/ownedNodeServerRun.ts:1080), before any request byte is written, so every stop the window attributes follows it in the journal; it means "Codebook is sending the declared request" (the live journal's own node-server.request event, written after the bytes left, :1084, is unchanged); a request refused before its bytes left is followed by request-failed with that refusal's code; path is stored with secret-named query values masked (redactSecretText/isSecretName), as in the header; no request header or body bytes are stored;
    • stop {declaredStopIndex, hit, generation, source {path, hash, line, column}, frame {name}, facts, unavailable, debuggerSnapshot}, copied from the run's NodeServerCapture (src/runtime.ts:71): generation is the run-wide pause generation (pauseGeneration), facts the redacted Record<'<mode>:<path>', value> of the declared inspections (bounded by the declaration's inspection count and redactInspectedValue), unavailable the [{path, reason}] list, debuggerSnapshot the replayDebugSnapshotSchema snapshot; column and frame.name come from the snapshot's top frame and are added to NodeServerStopCapture (src/nodeServerDebugger.ts:42);
    • response {status, contentType, body (the shown, redacted, shaped body), bodyBytes, readCut, location} or request-failed {code, message} (at most one, after the request); no other response header is stored;
    • end {reason: 'stopped' | 'closed' | 'failed', code?, exitCode?, signal?} (last): stopped when the learner, the chat or Save stopped the run; closed when the server exited on its own (with its exit code or signal); failed when the run ended with a failure code (RUNTIME_FAILED, PORT_IN_USE, …).
      Allowed order (the writer's server rules, replacing the test-only declared-order and result rules): output anywhere before end; exactly one request; stop entries only after the request and before the terminal entry, declaredStopIndex within the declared stops, at most 16 (the run's capture limit), the same stop may repeat with hit 1, 2, …; at most one terminal entry (response or request-failed), never followed by a stop; exactly one end, last; time never moves back. So a normal run is output* request stop+ (output|stop)* response output* end; a failed request ends … request-failed … end; a run stopped before its answer ends … request stop* end with no terminal entry.
    • source {path, hash, text}: the hash-verified executed source text, written once per (path, hash) just before the first stop that needs it; a stop entry's snapshot keeps its top frame's source by hash only, and the server store's read path rehydrates the full replayDebugSnapshotSchema snapshot before replay (one function, tested), so sixteen hits of one handler store its text once.
      Executed source. The source that ran is the double-read, hash-verified text the capture verified (verifiedSource in captureReplayDebugSnapshot, src/utils/captureReplayDebugSnapshot.ts:45, :203), stored once as above, and the replay's source slot (showNodeSourceSlot) shows that text, so editing, deleting or checking out another revision of the file never changes the replay; the current file opened separately discloses drift.
      Redaction at rest. The executed source text is the learner's own repository source, stored privately in the workspace's learning storage exactly as test replays store it; a secret written as a literal in source is not rewritten (the same accepted boundary as test replays). Nothing else is persisted that the chat would not see: outputs pass the run's output redactor; facts and snapshots are the run's redacted captures; the response body is the shown body (shapeResponseBody, redacted and cut); location is the redirect description the run already words; failure messages pass sanitizeCause; the header stores the declaration with secret-named body fields and query values masked (redactSecretText/isSecretName), while configurationHash stays the SHA-256 of the original declaration (identity only, never reversible). A test asserts a secret-named body field and a token in output never reach any file of the folder.
  3. Writing as it happens. startNodeServerRun (src/service.ts:4652) starts the writer after preparation and before launch; the run's journal callback (createNodeServerJournal's onEvent) appends output, request, response/request-failed; acceptCapture (src/ownedNodeServerRun.ts:872) appends each stop; run end appends end. All appends go through the writer's existing serial queue (NodeTestHistoryWriter.pending, src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:1439), which runs appends in call order and numbers each entry as it runs (this.sequence + 1 inside the chained operation, src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:1630), so journal callbacks, captures and the end can never interleave a write. acceptCapture stays synchronous: it enqueues the stop append (taking its sequence at that call) and publishes the pause at once, so live pause timing is unchanged; the run awaits nothing new. If an append fails (disk full, entry or byte bound), the writer is marked failed with its cause and every later append is skipped; the live run continues (D8). The seal awaits the queue before it reads the journal.
    Size budget [estimated]: one stop entry is at most 64 variables of at most 4,096 characters (REPLAY_DEBUG_MAX_VARIABLES, REPLAY_DEBUG_TEXT_LIMIT_CHARS, src/constants.ts:1784, :1807), about 256 KB, and each executed file's text is stored once (source entries); 16 hits are about 4.1 MB worst case plus the distinct files, against the 8 MiB bound (NODE_TEST_HISTORY_LIMIT_BYTES, src/constants.ts:1358). The gate is numeric: task 3's real-process test asserts the fixture run's sealed history stays under 2 MiB and records its bytes, and N59 records the P08 history's bytes.

  4. Seal. Every way a run ends reaches the seal: a learner Stop, the chat's codebook_stop, Save, and the extension's dispose on deactivate or window close all go through stopRecord, which already seals any record holding a recording writer (src/service.ts:4084); a server that exits on its own or a run that fails is sealed by the server run's terminal-state handler in StudyService (new, beside the record's existing run subscription). A dispose whose seal does not finish within the existing close bound leaves the folder unsealed, which then lists as interrupted. A failing seal write (sealed.json) abandons the writer (NodeTestHistoryWriter.abandon, src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:1615): the folder lists as interrupted, the status reads <server state> · Learning replay could not be saved: <cause>, and the live run is unaffected. A cancellation after the writer started and before the request leaves no request entry, so the folder is removed. After the queue drained: complete only when none of the conditions below holds; otherwise partial with every reason that holds, in this order, each with its own test:

    Condition Partial reason (exact text)
    no response entry, a request-failed entry No response was recorded: the request failed with <code>.
    no terminal entry, end stopped No response was recorded: the run was stopped before the server answered.
    no terminal entry, end closed No response was recorded: the server exited (<exit code or signal>) before it answered.
    no terminal entry, end failed No response was recorded: the run failed with <code>.
    a declared stop with no stop entry Declared stop <n> was not reached. (one per stop)
    a stop entry without a snapshot The debugger state at stop <n> was not recorded.
    an unavailable value <path> at stop <n> could not be read. (one per value)
    an append failed The history could not be written after <last entry>: <cause>.
    the journal reached its entry or byte bound The history reached its size limit; later events were not recorded.
    the run's capture budget was used up (node-server.capture-budget-exhausted; 16 hits, NODE_SERVER_REQUEST_CAPTURE_LIMIT) The capture budget (16 stop hits) was used up; later hits were not recorded.

    The run sets node-server.capture-budget-exhausted only when it refuses a 17th hit, so exactly 16 recorded hits with no 17th attempted is complete. The four "No response was recorded" rows are mutually exclusive (the first applies only with a request-failed entry, the next three only with no terminal entry); every other row that holds is listed once, in table order. Formats: <exit code or signal> reads exit code 1 or signal SIGTERM; <last entry> reads stop 2 (entry 14) or the request (entry 3). Example: a run stopped after stop 1 of 2 seals partial with No response was recorded: the run was stopped before the server answered. then Declared stop 2 was not reached. A 4xx/5xx response is a complete capture of what happened; the replay shows the status and never calls it a success. A history with no request entry is removed at seal, like an empty test history. A window that crashes before the seal leaves an unsealed folder, which the store already lists as interrupted once its writer process is gone (judgeNodeTestWriter, src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:793); it opens as a partial replay of its verified prefix, as an interrupted test history does.

  5. Record, status and Save. nodeServerRecordFields drops historyExcluded: 'server-run-not-saved' (and the reason from historyExclusionReason); the field is internal to the service record (not in any MCP resource or tool answer, checked in src/resources.ts and src/protocol.ts), and records are in memory only, so no saved state carries the old value; the status item reads $(record) Recording explanation · <server state> · Save learning replay, then Recording finished · Save learning replay after the run ended. Before the request was sent, Save answers Nothing to save yet: the server run has not sent its request. and the run continues. Saving while the server runs asks Saving stops the server run (<n> of <m> stops recorded). Save now? (Save and stop / Cancel), where <n> counts the distinct declared stops with at least one recorded hit and <m> the declared stops; it then stops the run through the existing stop path and seals; a Save-initiated seal is bounded by the existing close bound, and one that exceeds it abandons the writer with Learning replay could not be saved: timed out after <s> s. while the live state is unaffected. When the run already ended, Save asks nothing. refuseSavingServerRun is deleted. Edge cases: a request sent with no stop reached asks with 0 of <m> and seals partial (Declared stop 1 was not reached.); a second Save while the question is open focuses the same question (one modal, one save); when the server ends on its own while the question is open, Save and stop seals the already ended run without a second stop and Cancel leaves it ended and saveable (Recording finished · Save learning replay); a Save during the seal joins the same seal.
    Saved versus complete (as for test histories, readSaved, src/nodeLearningSave.ts:214): Save succeeds when the history is sealed, complete or partial, and the library lists it; it reads Saved only when the capture is complete and the chat's learning material covers it (no learningMissing, no captureMissing), otherwise Partial with each missing piece named and Open replay offered. The learning material may arrive before or after the seal. The skill says "saved" only for a sealed history and "complete" only when the run resource reads complete coverage and no missing capture.

  6. MCP 1.9 (additive). codebook_explain_node_history accepts a server history: new step references {type: 'request' | 'response' | 'request-failed', sequence} and {type: 'stop', sequence, sourceHash}, and the existing output reference keeps its exact shape {type: 'output', sequence, channel} (no existing payload changes); citations are checked against the journal exactly as for tests.
    Agent reads (lean). For a server history, codebook://node-history/<id>/events returns a compact list of citable learner events only (sequence, type, elapsedMs; for a stop its declared index, hit, path:line, sourceHash and redacted facts; for a response its status, content type, body bytes and cut flag; for output its channel and text), never source texts or full snapshots; one entry's full detail (snapshot, body) is codebook://node-history/<id>/events/<sequence>. Every page of one read is pinned to the prefix that existed at its first page (the through sequence carried in nextUri), so a recording history reads consistently; the skill reads after the seal. A test bounds a 16-hit history's events list to at most 16 pages of the existing 4,096-byte page size [estimated: ~150 bytes per output line, ~600 per stop].
    Coverage (three separate verdicts). Saved: the history is sealed. Capture complete: no partial reason (details 4). Learning complete: the material cites the request, every recorded stop hit and the recorded terminal entry (response or request-failed); output citations are optional; source and end are never required. learningMissing lists each missing citation as {type, sequence} plus declaredStopIndex and hit for a stop; captureMissing lists {code, text, params} with a stable code per partial reason (SERVER_HISTORY_NO_RESPONSE_REQUEST_FAILED, …_NO_RESPONSE_STOPPED, …_NO_RESPONSE_EXITED, …_NO_RESPONSE_RUN_FAILED, …_STOP_NOT_REACHED, …_SNAPSHOT_MISSING, …_VALUE_UNAVAILABLE, …_APPEND_FAILED, …_SIZE_LIMIT, …_CAPTURE_BUDGET_EXHAUSTED), the same codes keyed in the README's troubleshooting table. The run resource (while live) and the history resource (afterwards, src/resources.ts:184) return the same three verdicts and lists, so a later session can finish the material from Saved studies alone; the server run's nextActions offers save-node-learning while learning is incomplete.
    Errors (agent-ready, isError with a stable code, message, cause, recovery). History problems never fail a live operation: the run resource reports nodeServer.history recording | unavailable | failed | sealed with historyIssue {code: HISTORY_UNAVAILABLE | HISTORY_APPEND_FAILED | HISTORY_SEAL_FAILED, message, preserved, next}. codebook_explain_node_history refusals name the history URI and revision: a missing or mismatched citation answers INVALID_REFERENCE naming the offending reference and the nearest valid sequences, with recovery "re-read the history events, correct the citation, retry once"; a revision conflict returns the current revision with recovery "re-read the material and retry with that revision" (never the idempotency-key recovery). Text and structuredContent carry the same fields, and a redaction canary planted in output, location, failure message, frame name, fact keys and partial causes appears in no file of the folder and no MCP answer.
    Version skew. Skill 1.0.53 checks that codebook_status reports API 1.9 or later before saving a server explanation and otherwise tells the learner to update Codebook; the protocol instructions and codebook://help/node-server advertise the server save route to an older skill. codebook_stop seals a server history non-interactively (the chat's route; the learner's is Save).
    Canonical help. codebook://help/node-server is the one canonical text for saving a server run: the stop budget (16 recorded hits), the three verdicts, the codes, and one schema-validated worked example (request → stop → response citations, expectedRevision: 0, the success check, a conflict fix); the README, skill and tool descriptions link or quote it, and the tool description says node history covers profile: node-test | node-server with a step-type table per profile. A doc test validates the example against the schema. codebook://node-history lists server histories with profile, request line, response status and capture status. The server run resource gains the test run's history fields (learningCoverage, captureMissing, history URI). The protocol instructions, the codebook_explain description and codebook://help/node-server stop saying server runs are not saved and say how they are saved. codebook_explain still refuses a server stop, now with a message naming codebook_explain_node_history as the way to save the server explanation.

  7. Library. NodeTestHistorySummary becomes a profile union; a server row leads with the saved learning title (the chat's title, else its question), then Server replay · <METHOD> <path> → <status> (or → <code>) as secondary text, with complete/partial and its reasons, so two replays of one route are told apart by what they explain; delete, other-window and storage-unavailable behavior follow the test rows unchanged.

  8. Replay screen. Screen layout, mapped to image region 2 (the test replay layout, unchanged in structure): the native Run and Debug view on the left with the replay debug session's recorded Variables and Call Stack; the Application pane where region 2 shows the recorded application (for a server run the recorded request, output and response, since server evidence never invents a Web UI); the recorded source in a native editor below it; the Learning summary pane in the former chat position (summary, sequence diagram, selected step, understanding checkbox), collapsible behind the Learning summary button (5A); the shared transport across the bottom (Previous/Next stop, Play, Previous/Next event, the time slider with stop ticks and unrecorded spans, the readout). The test replay path is reused with a server text catalog beside NODE_TEST_REPLAY_TEXT: heading Server replay, events Request, Output, Stop, Response, understanding I understand this server history, footer Historical server request and output. Reading it does not resend the request or restart the server. The Application pane shows the recorded request line, the output up to the selected moment and, from its moment on, the recorded response (status, content type, body excerpt); a stop moment presents its source slot and its snapshot through ReplayDebugger.present: the editor shows the top frame's recorded source, and the Call Stack lists every recorded frame, the lower ones with their sourceUnavailable reason and not navigable, exactly as a test replay shows them; the slider maps each entry's elapsedMs (time since launch, paused time included) exactly as the test replay maps its entries, with unrecorded spans between stop ticks; every non-stop moment shows Source and debugger not recorded at this moment. (4A, with the timeline's unrecorded spans). Replay-open cases: a history with a request and response but no stop opens at the request, and Next stop answers There is no next stop in this server replay.; a journal damaged mid-file opens its verified prefix as an interrupted history, as the store already does (src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:1143); a history another window is still recording lists as recording and opens only once sealed or interrupted, as test histories do. The Application pane reuses the test replay's output window and cut rules (projectNodeTestApplication, the application-cut message) and shows the response body as recorded (already bounded by shapeResponseBody). The playhead is a journal entry: reader-position.json stores the selected entry's sequence in the test history's existing event-cursor format (nodeTestHistoryReaderPositionSchema, read by readReaderPosition, src/nodeTestHistoryStore.ts:1179), so a request, output or response moment restores as itself; restart and reopen restore that entry and the understanding.
    8a. Server replay screen decisions (design review). Every transport, Play, boundary, tie-break, loading, focus, debugger-start and drift behavior is the test replay's, unchanged (extension/README.md line 84 and line 555 describe them); only the words and the items below differ.

    • Learner events. The events the transport, counts, timeline and saved playhead use are request, output, stop, response and request-failed; source is storage only and end is not an event (the timeline ends at it, and a history with no terminal entry shows Recording ended before the server answered.). A declared stop hit more than once reads Stop <n> · hit <k>; Previous/Next stop move through every recorded hit in order. Entries sharing one time keep their journal order, as test events do.

    • Opening. A replay opens at its saved playhead, else its first recorded stop, else its request (the test rule). The Learning summary is the reading surface and the Application pane is the evidence beside it.

    • Application pane structure. Two fixed regions outside the scroll, then the log: (1) the request line <METHOD> <path> labeled Request sent by Codebook (or Request not sent: <code> for a refused request), never worded as received by the server; (2) the response state for the selected moment: before the response entry No response recorded yet at this moment.; at or after it Response <status> · <content type> with the recorded body in its own scrolling block, Response body is empty. for zero bytes and Body shown cut at <n> bytes. when readCut or the shown-body bound cut it; for a history without one No response was recorded: <reason> or Request failed: <code>; (3) the output log up to the selected moment (the test output window, its follow and Jump to latest). Moving back clears a later response from the region. The status is plain text with no success color or icon for any status. Long paths and titles wrap and clamp with Show more, as the test replay's question and summary do.

    • Partial reasons. The replay's capture-reason line (the test replay's clamped line with Show more) lists every partial reason; a library row shows the first reason and +<n> more.

    • Save question and outcome (replaces E5's question text): before a response is recorded the question reads Saving stops the server run (<n> of <m> stops recorded; no response recorded yet, so the response will not be saved). Save now?; after it, Saving stops the server run (<n> of <m> stops recorded, response recorded). Save now?. After the seal one notice: Server replay saved., Server replay saved as partial: <first reason> (+<n> more). or Server replay saved; the chat's explanation is not saved yet., each with Open replay; when the explanation arrives later the row becomes Saved without a reload. The status item is one clickable item (Save); its tooltip names the recorded stops and whether a response is recorded.

    • States table.

      State Learner sees Actions Kept
      Opening Loading recorded server output… Close nothing selected yet
      No explanation saved No learning summary was saved for this server replay. and that the chat can save it with codebook_explain_node_history moves, Inspect playhead
      Explanation arrives while open summary and sequence render in place all playhead, focus, reading position, understanding
      Read failure the test replay's recorded-moment failure line with retry retry, Close last shown moment
      No verified prefix row note This saved study cannot be opened. It can still be deleted. delete —
      Recording in another window row reads recording; Open answers the test history's other-window refusal with server words wait —
    • Sequence links. A summary or sequence step citing a request, output or response entry moves the playhead to that entry, as stop citations do, keeping time, source, debugger and reading context aligned.

    • Accessible words. Every profile-worded accessible name, tooltip, live region and shortcut-list entry uses server words for a server replay (Pause server replay, recorded server time, Server replay learning sequence, …), never test; color is never the only signal for unrecorded spans, selection or focus in the four supported themes; reduced motion as in the test replay; no new global key.
      8b. Engineering contracts (eng review; these govern where items 1–8 are less specific).

    • Storage seam. A storage descriptor per profile (folder, codec and validation, order rules, journal-scan rules, seal evaluator, summary) and a separate UI adapter per profile (text catalog, learner-event projection, accessible words), so storage never imports UI; this replaces "the descriptor carries the catalog" in item 1. One history repository resolves a studyId to its store for the workspace, resources, MCP and deletion, and validates ids and sequences through the existing test-history validator. Admission counts saved studies, test histories and server histories together under the one storage lock, in both directions (a browser save also counts server histories), so two windows racing for the last slot get one success.

    • History sink (not the live journal callback). The run feeds a typed history sink directly: request attempts, the bytes-sent mark, output (redacted, before the in-memory journal's own bound, so the live journal dropping output never drops history), captures, the response with the shown body exactly as the live run shows it (shapeResponseBody's 8,192 bytes, not the 4,096-byte journal detail) and the request duration as its own field, and the end. Every entry's elapsedMs comes from one monotonic clock started at launch; a sink exception or rejection is caught, marks the writer failed and never reaches the live run. Consecutive output chunks within 50 ms (up to 4,096 characters) coalesce into one entry; structural entries are never coalesced.

    • Request attempts. request is one send attempt (attempt: 1, 2, …) appended when its window opens; a refusal before its bytes left appends request-withdrawn {attempt, code} and the same run may try again; request-sent {attempt} marks the bytes handed to the socket. Rules: at most one open attempt; stops only while an attempt is open; response or request-failed closes the run's request for good. Learner events include each attempt and withdrawal; the Application pane labels the attempt by its marks (Request sent by Codebook only with request-sent, else Request not sent: <code>).

    • Bounds that protect the answer. Output has its own budget (2,000 entries or 2 MiB, constants in src/constants.ts); past it output is dropped with one output-truncated entry and the partial code SERVER_HISTORY_OUTPUT_TRUNCATED; structural entries (request*, source, stop, terminal, end) keep 1 MiB and 100 entries of reserved headroom. The writer queue holds at most 1,000 entries or 4 MiB pending; beyond it output is dropped under the same code and structural entries wait. A source text above 512 KiB is stored as its hash with sourceUnavailable: 'too large', shown by the replay. History start is bounded (2 s) so slow storage never delays the launch (D8). Size claims are measurements, not guarantees: the events list guarantees a per-page bound, and a 16-hit history with at most 200 output lines fits 16 pages (test).

    • One seal coordinator. Each record holds one seal promise; Stop, Save, dispose, self-exit and failure all join it (the existing subscription that already routes failure to stopRecord stays the only terminal path; no parallel handler). The writer separates closed to new appends from draining accepted appends: entries accepted before the seal began are written, then end, then sealed.json. A timeout abandons through a token the late seal checks before publishing, so a late sealed.json never appears after the folder was reported interrupted. A history whose append failed has no end and reads as a valid partial (reader rule).

    • Structured seal. A server sealed.json stores status, reasons: [{code, params, text}] (all reasons, uncut), the capture outcome and the journal hash; one evaluator computes capture completeness for the live cache, the library, Save and MCP. Capture complete also requires each stop's snapshot to be presentable: non-empty frames, top frame path, line, column and source hash matching the stop, scopes read (lower frames may lack source). Server Save reads that evaluator, never testResult.

    • Replay model. A per-history replay model is built once from the raw journal: learner events (no source), lookup by sequence, stop number and hit, rehydrated snapshots, endedAtMs from end, and the profile's completion verdicts. The workspace's existing select, supersede and commit order is reused unchanged, never duplicated for servers; a saved playhead pointing at a storage-only entry restores the nearest earlier learner event.

    • Journal integrity. Writer, incremental scan (recordingJournalScan) and full read share the same per-profile rules, proven by one set of valid and invalid journals run through all three. An unsealed history opens its verified prefix; a sealed history whose journal hash does not match stays refused (the existing guarantee), never shown as interrupted. A torn last line is cut at the verified prefix.

    • Learning complete (replaces the every-hit rule). The material cites the request, at least one recorded hit of every reached declared stop, and the recorded terminal; further hits and output are optional; learningMissing and captureMissing are capped at 20 entries plus a count.

    • Cross-window material. saveLearningMaterial reads, checks the revision and writes under the storage lock, so two windows saving the same revision get one success and one conflict (test and server histories alike); the run resource re-reads the stored revision instead of trusting this window's cache.

  9. Skill 1.0.53 and docs. After a server run the skill reads the server history and saves the learning material through codebook_explain_node_history, citing request, stops, output and response; it claims a saved replay only when the run resource reads nodeServer.learningCoverage complete and an empty nodeServer.captureMissing (the server counterparts of nodeTest.learningCoverage and nodeTest.captureMissing), and otherwise names what is missing. Packaged README (server section, glossary Server replay, and one sentence that a server replay stores the executed source as it ran, privately in the workspace's learning storage, secret-named values masked and source literals unchanged), CHANGELOG 0.2.54.0.

Tasks

Each task closes with its change and the test that guards it (protects=…; fails_when=…; no_claim=…), red first (copy aside + git checkout HEAD -- <file>, never git stash), or with recorded evidence. Order: task 0, then pt1 = tasks 1, 2, 4 (writer and seal parts) and E1–E4 below; pt2 = tasks 6 (read parts), 7, 8 and E5–E6; pt3 = tasks 3, 4 (wiring), 5, 6 (publication), 9, 10, 11 and E7.

Eng-review tests (added to the tasks they belong to):

  • E1 (pt1) seal coordinator: append and finish in one synchronous turn keep the accepted entry; finish during an fsync; a seal timeout followed by a late I/O completion publishes nothing; Save, Stop and self-exit at once give one seal.
  • E2 (pt1) admission: one slot left, a server and a test start from two windows (both orders), and a server and a browser save; exactly one wins; updating an existing study is not a new reservation.
  • E3 (pt1) journal integrity: the same valid and invalid server journals through writer, scan and read; a torn last line; a sealed hash mismatch stays refused; an append-failed history without end reads partial.
  • E4 (pt1) structured seal: reasons, codes and params identical before and after a restart; 30 unavailable values keep every reason in the seal and 20 plus a count in the answers; a snapshot with empty frames or a mismatched top frame is capture-incomplete; one hash reused by stops on different lines.
  • E5 (pt2) replay model: non-contiguous sequences around source, two hits at the same time, a late end after the terminal, a saved playhead on a storage-only entry, switching test → server → browser while an old native presentation finishes; a replay entry whose launcher and HTTP sender throw if called proves no request is sent.
  • E6 (pt2) cross-window material: two windows save the same revision (one conflict); a save from another window shows everywhere; a save racing a Trash move never resurrects the folder.
  • E7 (pt3) history sink: output after the in-memory journal's bound is still recorded; a long start then a fast response keeps time monotonic; a 4–8 KiB body is stored as shown; same-time output, capture and response; a sink exception leaves the live run untouched; a refused send then a successful retry; a Stop during the ownership check; output past its budget and a slow fsync drop output with SERVER_HISTORY_OUTPUT_TRUNCATED while request, stops and response are written; a 600 KiB source is stored as hash only; Unicode- and escape-heavy maximum entries; an integrated flow: Save before the response → partial seal → restart → reasons shown → stop replay.
  1. Reach inventory (bounded, before code, about 30 min; evidence: task 0 comment). On the pinned P08 clone (4f68953), list its HTTP routes with method, path, whether one unauthenticated request reaches the handler and its database work, and what else a route needs (a session cookie, a prior request, a browser step); record the table in this Issue. N59 chooses its questions from the reachable rows; the unreachable rows are recorded as the server form's remaining gap in AC-REAL-PROJECTS.
  2. Store generalized (details 1). New server logic lives in new modules (a server schema module, src/utils/ projections and catalog), never as new branches grown inside the long functions of studyWorkspace.ts or service.ts; pnpm --dir extension health:static runs after every task. Node-test compatibility means: the existing node-test store, summary, citation and other-window tests (nodeTestHistoryStore*.test.ts, nodeTestHistorySummary.test.ts, nodeTestHistoryCitations.test.ts, nodeTestHistoryOtherWindow.test.ts) pass with no edit to their files, and a node-test header written by the new code parses with the old schema (no new required field, profile: 'node-test'); a history saved by v0.2.53.0 (fixture folder committed under the tests) opens and lists unchanged. A node-server history writes header.json, events.jsonl, writer.json from its start and sealed.json at the seal; learning-material.json, learning-decision.json and reader-position.json appear only when the chat or learner writes them, as for tests. Tests: those cases; two appends called back to back in one synchronous step get consecutive entry numbers in call order; a server header round-trips; a test header in the server folder is refused; a live server history recorded in one window lists as recording in another and cannot be deleted there.
  3. Server entries and writer rules (details 2). Tests: each rule refuses its violation (stop before request, index out of range, a 17th stop, two terminals, entry after end, time moving back, a stop whose source hash has no earlier source entry) and accepts a valid run; three hits of one handler store its text in one source entry and each rehydrates to the full snapshot.
  4. Written as it happens (details 2–3). Host test with the fake debugger: request, two stop hits, output and response appear in events.jsonl in order before the run ends; output events racing a capture keep call order; a failing stop append still publishes the pause, skips later appends and seals partial with the cause; a secret-named body field and a token in output reach no file of the folder.
  5. Seal (details 4). Tests: complete; each partial reason; 5xx complete; no request → folder removed; learner Stop seals; server exit on its own seals with closed; a dispose whose seal exceeds the close bound leaves the folder unsealed and it lists interrupted; a failing sealed.json write abandons the writer and the status names the cause; an unsealed folder whose writer is gone lists interrupted and opens its prefix.
  6. Record, status and Save (details 1, 5). Tests: status texts; Save before the request; "Save while running asks with the recorded count, then stops and seals"; 0 of <m> seals partial; Cancel keeps the run; a second Save focuses the open question; the server ending while the question is open (Save and stop seals once, Cancel leaves it saveable); a Save during the seal joins it (one seal); Save after the end; storage unavailable or a full store → live run starts, status and Save name the cause; the refusal sentence is gone.
  7. MCP 1.9 (details 6). Tests: material citing request/stop/response saves; an existing node-test payload (output with channel) saves unchanged; a citation to a missing or mismatched entry is refused with INVALID_REFERENCE, the offending reference and nearest valid sequences; a revision conflict returns the current revision and the material recovery; the events list for a 16-hit history stays within 16 pages and excludes source texts and snapshots; a per-entry detail read returns the snapshot; pages of one read stay pinned while output keeps appending; the three verdicts and both missing lists agree between the run and history resources; nextActions offers save-node-learning; historyIssue codes for unavailable, append and seal failures with the live run unaffected; text and structuredContent agree; the redaction canary reaches no file and no MCP answer; skill 1.0.53 text refuses to save on API 1.8; the help example validates against the schema; protocol, description and help texts.
  8. Library row (details 7). Tests: row text led by the learning title (and by the question before material exists), two replays of one route told apart, partial reasons, delete.
  9. Replay screen (details 8). Workspace tests mirroring studyWorkspaceTestReplay*: open from the library after the run ended, a history with no stop (Next stop answers There is no next stop in this server replay.), a damaged journal's prefix, a history still recording in another window opens only once sealed or interrupted, lower frames listed with their unavailable reason, Next/Previous stop and event, a non-adjacent seek and back return the same source slot and snapshot, a non-stop moment clears source highlight and debugger, understanding is saved only by the checkbox, playhead and understanding return after a reopen; Reader DOM case for the server catalog words and accessible names (no test word in a server replay's names, tooltips or live regions), the response-state texts, a long title and path that wrap and clamp, and the explanation arriving while the replay is open.
  10. Skill 1.0.53, help, README, CHANGELOG (details 9). Tests: skill text, help text, package test for the README sentence and versions, the README troubleshooting table keyed by the captureMissing codes, and the skill and README linking the canonical help text.
  11. N59 native check, VS Code (driving agent; procedure frozen below before the take).
  12. N59 native check, Cursor (driving agent). Risk: OBS Window Capture is not yet proven on a Cursor window (AGENTS.md Native QA); its preflight decides, and a recorder failure is reported as such, never as a product result.

N59 procedure (frozen before execution)

Space local:codebook-qa, the PR's candidate VSIX installed normally (hash recorded), target the pinned P08 clone /Users/lume/qa/c57/switch-time at 4f68953, clean, its documented local stack up. VS Code 1.142.0 with Copilot Chat Agent on GPT-6.1 Luna if the picker lists it after searching 6.1 and luna, else GPT-6.1 Terra; Cursor Agent on Grok 4.6 high with Fast on; after observed credit exhaustion the Codex extension (recorded, never labeled Copilot or Cursor Agent). One natural question per host about a different server code path than N57/N58's sign-in, chosen from task 0's reachable rows (each host its own wording and path), asking the chat to stop at the places that matter while it runs the server. Before each run, the driving agent freezes in this Issue the question's required causal links (for example: the request reaches the handler; validation decides the branch; the database call returns; the response status follows), as evaluator criteria only, never given to the chat or the skill. The chat chooses its declared stops; an attempt whose history seals partial counts as a failed attempt (the chat's stop choice, recorded as such, not a product FAIL); one further attempt keeps the same frozen causal question in new wording, the first attempt's evidence is kept, then the host's check is FAIL. OBS Window Capture per AGENTS.md Native QA with its preflight.

Pass, per host (positive flow; a partial history fails it):

  • the chat explains the run live at at least two declared stops and the response is recorded; Save learning replay saves it and the library row reads Saved (complete capture and learning material); a row reading Partial fails N59;
  • before saving, the driving agent records each live stop's file:line, three named values from the stopped frame's local scope (the values a replay snapshot captures) and the top three call-stack frames (stills);
  • the server is stopped and the chat closed; the replay opens from the library;
  • at each stop moment, reached by Next/Previous stop, by Next/Previous event and by a non-adjacent seek, the native editor shows the recorded source at the recorded line and the native debugger shows the same three values and three frames as the live stop;
  • a moment between stops (the request, an output line, the response) shows Source and debugger not recorded at this moment. with no source highlight and no debugger values;
  • traversing stop 2 → stop 1 → stop 2 three times shows identical state; no request is sent: the server stays down (lsof -nP -iTCP:<port> -sTCP:LISTEN empty, polled through the traversal) and Output › Codebook gains no node-server.request or start entry;
  • understanding changes only by the checkbox; after Developer: Reload Window the playhead and understanding return;
  • recorded as diagnostics: the learner's actions from the chat's answer to the open replay (target 3: Save, Save and stop, Open replay; none of them when the chat already stopped the run) and the chat's MCP calls and seconds from the stop to a saved explanation;
  • the saved summary and sequence diagram's claims are checked against the recorded entries they cite, and each frozen causal link is marked observed, source-derived or not covered;
  • learning check: with the chat closed, the driving agent answers one frozen follow-up question about the path (why the branch was taken, from the input, an intermediate value and the result) using only the replay, and records whether the answer is correct, which moments it needed and how many moves and seconds it took (moves and seconds are diagnostics, not gates). The learning check FAILS when a frozen causal link the saved explanation claims is unexplained or misclassified (observed versus source-derived), or when the correct answer cannot be derived from the replay; a learning-check failure is a Major finding on the explanation and fails N59 for that host;
  • from the summary or sequence, selecting the request, a stop and the response moves the playhead to each, and the selection, explanation, Application pane and native state agree;
  • at the normal expanded desktop window (D034): a long title, path and body wrap or clamp, the summary opens and closes (5A) keeping the moment, the transport stays visible, and the screen is compared with image region 2 with the differences recorded.
    Verdicts: a failed save, replay or synchronization behavior above is a Critical finding (it blocks the merge under the delivery rules); an OBS or input-delivery failure is NOT RUN (unverifiable), never a product result; a chat whose stops miss the path is a failed attempt as above.
    Evidence: the take, 10 fps frames and inspected transition frames, the live and replay stills, hashes here, files private. A partial-history negative check is covered by tests, not by N59.

Acceptance criteria

  1. Tasks 1–9 close with their change and a red-first test whose card states protects / fails_when / no_claim.
  2. N59 passes in VS Code and in Cursor on the cycle's final candidate, identities and evidence hashes recorded here; a host not run is NOT RUN with its reason, and the row stays unverified for it.
  3. Existing node-test and browser replays open and behave as before (their suites pass unchanged).
  4. The exact-HEAD gate (pnpm --dir extension gate, 15 checks) passes on the final tree, with required CI and the local CodeRabbit CLI on the final range; feature-cycle delivery rules apply (critical findings fixed before merge, others carried by name).
  5. health:static and health pass against their committed baselines.
  6. Every user-visible change has a CHANGELOG 0.2.54.0 line and a packaged README sentence; skill 1.0.53; MCP API 1.9.

Testing plan

The per-layer test counts are in the pinned comment Accepted review obligations (cycle 0059 plan); each task above names its required cases.

Rules for the implementing agent

  1. Acceptance criteria are the protects / fails_when / no_claim profile of each test. Never "make the tests pass".
  2. Real code and real tests land in the same change; a placeholder, a stub assertion or a deferred test is not done.
  3. Any change to a test, validator, CI step, timeout, tolerance, threshold, snapshot or suppression pragma is reported on its own line with its justification, before any other result.
  4. A reported command names the command and its observed result; a command not run is not reported; stderr is never silenced in a cited command.
  5. A report is a claim until the parent re-executes it: say what was verified, reused and not checked.
  6. Red first for every behavior change (copy aside + git checkout HEAD -- <file>; never git stash).
  7. A fix changing user-visible behavior changes the packaged README in the same commit.

Rollback

Revert the cycle's PRs in reverse merge order. Saved server histories stay in node-servers.v1/ and are ignored by the reverted extension (it never reads or counts that folder; v0.2.53.0's saved-study limit counts only its saved studies and node-tests.v1/), so they occupy disk until the learner deletes the folder or reinstalls a version that lists them; node-test histories are untouched by design (task 1). MCP returns to 1.8 (the additions disappear); the skill returns to 1.0.52.

Out of scope

  • Several requests per run, authenticated requests, watch mode, HTTPS, streaming, child-process listeners.
  • Per-step I understand this step (E8) and contributes.keybindings (later candidates).
  • Chrome MV3, Vite/Expo web UI, Pages Router, Node Examples; native Windows and Ubuntu use.
  • Changing node-test or browser replay behavior.

Later candidates (short list; no defect is held here)

  • E8 per-step understanding in every replay kind.
  • contributes.keybindings for Codebook's assigned actions.

Owner decisions

  • Standing: the owner's goal (every resource to the product; never spend money or break the law). The owner cannot answer: 「返事ができないので、選択肢はReccomendをpickしてください🙇」, so each decision takes the recommended option, named here.
  • Owner, 2026-10-28 (/goal): design the feature with /autoplan, merge after CI passes; if /ship does not converge within three review rounds, record only Critical/Major defects in a GitHub Issue, fix the last round's findings and merge; never trigger hosted CodeRabbit; VS Code trials on GPT-6.1 Terra, Cursor on Grok 4.6 high fast, the Codex extension after credit exhaustion.
  • D1 (fixed by the Eng review): three pull requests, reader before producer, each passing its own reviews, CI and gate: pt1 codex/cycle-0059-pt1 storage foundation (descriptor and UI-adapter seam, repository, shared admission, server codec and rules, writer drain and seal coordinator, structured seal, source dedupe and rehydration, journal-integrity rules, v0.2.53.0 fixture), no producer; pt2 codex/cycle-0059-pt2 the read path (catalog row and deletion, MCP discovery, lean events, detail and material with the cross-window lock, replay model, Application pane, server replay screen), verified with fixture histories while a live server Save is still refused; pt3 codex/cycle-0059-pt3 the producer (history sink, request attempts, capture, response and end persistence, Save UI, API 1.9 published, skill 1.0.53, help, README, versions) and N59 on the final candidate. No merged main ever writes a history it cannot list and replay.
  • D2 (recommended): a separate node-servers.v1/ folder in the same generalized store, so existing test replays need no migration and a revert leaves them untouched.
  • D3 (recommended): a recorded 4xx/5xx response is a complete capture; completeness describes the evidence, not the server's verdict.
  • D4 (recommended): reuse codebook_explain_node_history (API 1.9, additive) instead of a new tool, keeping the skill thin.
  • D5 (recommended): Save while the server runs asks, then stops it through the existing stop path, as a test Save before the result does.
  • D6 (recommended): N59 in both hosts (G11 needs each host's own evidence), VS Code first.
  • D7 (recommended): understanding per server history, as for test histories; E8 stays a later candidate and AC-LEARNING stays open.
  • D8 (recommended): the live run wins over its history. Learning storage that is unavailable at start, or an append that fails later, never blocks or stops the live explanation; the status, Save and the seal name the cause.

    • Reads, in this session: PRODUCT_GOAL.md in full except ## Final acceptance protocol (goal version 10, 444 lines); Cycle 0058's Issue (Cycle 0058: a stopped or retried server run does only what it reports, and what the chat reads about it is true #143) with its four comments (closing comment: nothing carried; D6 pause, lifted by the owner's /goal message of 2026-10-28); Cycle 0057's Issue (Cycle 0057: a Node HTTP server of a real repository is explained live (node-server profile) #139) body and comments for the last full gap audit; the archived behavioral design (capture, recording and replay) and the UI state and interaction review passes 1–6. AGENTS.md is in context as project instructions.
    • Image: docs/designs/assets/codebook-product-spec-v9.png opened with an image tool: 1024 × 1536, 1,878,402 bytes, SHA-256 f189ee82541a72ed981e3f7a0e21bd35a19b6601df1c7208671117a335caf2aa (matches Design target). Regions 1 (live), 2 (replay: video, recorded source, recorded debugger, Learning summary, transport with Unrecorded interval), 3 (DeepWiki) and the shortcut strip found. This cycle serves region 2 for the server execution form, which has no Web UI: the Application pane shows the recorded request, output and response instead of video.
    • State: branch codex/cycle-0059 from origin/main 250ade84 (v0.2.53.0, skill 1.0.52, MCP API 1.8), clean. Node 24.22.1 (pinned). No open PR.
    • Tools and hosts: Space local:codebook-qa reachable (cua doctor: 94 passed, 1 failed: screenshot.display reports a capture size differing from the image's claimed resolution; to recheck before N59). In the Space: VS Code 1.142.0, Cursor, OBS installed; the pinned P08 clone /Users/lume/qa/c57/switch-time at 4f68953, clean; its Postgres running.
    • Gap audit: in the body (all 13 rows, baseline 250ade84).
    • Spec quality gate: Codex outside review 8/10 (pass). Its eight ambiguities were folded into the body before filing: executed-source storage, allowed event order, write serialization and failure priority, crash recovery, saved versus complete, redaction at rest, N59's positive-flow criteria, and how node-test compatibility is compared.
    • Next: /autoplan on this plan (CEO → Design → DX → Eng); the approved revision replaces the body.

    Accepted review obligations (cycle 0059 plan)

    Continuation of the Issue body (GitHub's 65,536-character limit). Each bullet is a requirement a plan review accepted; later bullets state their replacements of earlier ones.

    Requirements the plan reviews accepted; each is also stated in the task it belongs to.

    • Saving while the server runs asks Saving stops the server run (<n> of <m> stops recorded). Save now? with the live recorded-stop count (E5); verified by the task 5 test "Save while running asks with the recorded count, then stops and seals".

    • Executed source text is stored once per (path, hash) in a source entry before the first stop that needs it, and the server store's read path rehydrates the full snapshot; verified by the task 2 test "three hits of one handler store its text in one source entry and each rehydrates to the full snapshot" and the refusal of a stop whose hash has no earlier source entry.

    • The store's profile seam is one descriptor per profile (folder, header and entry schemas, order rules, seal reasons, summary projection); node-test's descriptor wraps today's behavior with its existing tests unedited (task 1).

    • Task 0 inventories the pinned P08 clone's routes (reachable by one unauthenticated request or not, and what else each needs) in the Issue before code; N59 questions come from reachable rows; the header carries formatVersion: 1, instance and run identities and the repository revision.

    • N59 freezes each question's required causal links in the Issue before the run (evaluator-only), checks the saved summary and sequence claims against the cited entries, marks each link observed, source-derived or not covered, and runs a learning check (one frozen follow-up question answered from the replay alone, with correctness, moments used, moves and seconds recorded); a failed save, replay or synchronization behavior is Critical; an OBS or input failure is NOT RUN; a retry keeps the frozen causal question.

    • A server library row leads with the saved learning title (else the question), with the request line and status as secondary text; verified by the task 7 tests "row text led by the learning title" and "two replays of one route told apart".

    • The packaged README states that a server replay stores the executed source as it ran, privately, secret-named values masked and source literals unchanged (task 9).

    • Learner events are request, output, stop, response and request-failed; source is never an event and end ends the timeline; a stop hit more than once reads Stop <n> · hit <k> and Previous/Next stop visit every recorded hit; verified by task 8 tests.

    • A replay opens at its saved playhead, else its first recorded stop, else its request; verified by task 8.

    • The Application pane shows a fixed request region (Request sent by Codebook or Request not sent: <code>), a fixed response-state region (No response recorded yet at this moment., Response <status> · <content type> with its body block, Response body is empty., Body shown cut at <n> bytes., No response was recorded: <reason>, Request failed: <code>), then the output log; moving back clears a later response; no success color for any status; verified by task 8 workspace tests and the Reader DOM case.

    • The capture-reason line lists every partial reason; a library row shows the first reason and +<n> more; verified by tasks 7 and 8.

    • Replacement of the CEO-accepted E5 question text: the Save question reads Saving stops the server run (<n> of <m> stops recorded; no response recorded yet, so the response will not be saved). Save now? before a response is recorded and Saving stops the server run (<n> of <m> stops recorded, response recorded). Save now? after it; the seal ends with one of Server replay saved., Server replay saved as partial: <first reason> (+<n> more)., Server replay saved; the chat's explanation is not saved yet., each with Open replay; verified by task 5 tests.

    • The states table (opening, no explanation, explanation arriving while open keeps playhead, focus, reading position and understanding, read failure with retry, no verified prefix, recording in another window) holds; verified by task 8 and the Reader DOM case.

    • Summary or sequence steps citing request, output or response entries move the playhead to them; verified by task 8 and N59.

    • Server accessible names, tooltips, live regions and shortcut entries use server words, never test; color is never the only signal; verified by the Reader DOM case.

    • N59's learning check fails on an unexplained or misclassified frozen causal link or an underivable answer (Major, fails N59 for that host); N59 also checks request → stop → response selection from the summary, the D034 window with long content and 5A, and records a region-2 comparison.

    • Server events reads are lean: codebook://node-history/<id>/events lists citable learner events without source texts or full snapshots, codebook://node-history/<id>/events/<sequence> returns one entry's detail, and every page of one read stays pinned to its first page's prefix; a 16-hit history's list fits in 16 pages; verified by task 6 tests.

    • Three verdicts: saved (sealed), capture complete (no partial reason) and learning complete (material cites the request, every recorded stop hit and the recorded terminal; output optional; source and end never required); learningMissing lists {type, sequence} plus declared index and hit for stops; captureMissing lists {code, text, params} with the ten SERVER_HISTORY_* codes; the run and history resources agree; nextActions offers save-node-learning while learning is incomplete; verified by task 6.

    • Errors: historyIssue {code: HISTORY_UNAVAILABLE | HISTORY_APPEND_FAILED | HISTORY_SEAL_FAILED, message, preserved, next} on the run resource, never failing a live operation; INVALID_REFERENCE names the offending reference and nearest valid sequences with recovery "re-read the history events, correct the citation, retry once"; a revision conflict returns the current revision with the material recovery; text and structuredContent agree; a redaction canary reaches no file and no MCP answer; verified by task 6.

    • The existing output citation {type: 'output', sequence, channel} is unchanged; skill 1.0.53 saves a server explanation only on API 1.9 or later and otherwise asks for an update; codebook_stop seals the server history; verified by tasks 6 and 9.

    • codebook://help/node-server is the canonical save text with the 16-hit budget, the verdicts, the codes and one schema-validated worked example; the README carries a troubleshooting table keyed by the codes; the tool description states node history covers node-test and node-server with a step-type table; verified by a doc test and task 9.

    • A Save-initiated seal is bounded by the existing close bound; past it the writer is abandoned with Learning replay could not be saved: timed out after <s> s.; Save asks nothing once the run ended; verified by task 5.

    • The profile descriptor also carries the learner-event projection and the text catalog (task 1).

    • N59 records as diagnostics the learner's actions from the answer to the open replay (target 3) and the chat's MCP calls and seconds from the stop to a saved explanation.

    • Storage descriptors (codec, validation, order rules, journal-scan rules, seal evaluator, summary) and UI adapters (catalog, learner-event projection, accessible words) are separate per profile; this replaces the CEO/DX wording that the descriptor carries the catalog and projection; one history repository resolves studyIds and validates ids and sequences; admission counts all saved kinds under one storage lock in both directions; verified by task 1 and E2.

    • A typed history sink fed by the run records request attempts, the bytes-sent mark, redacted output before the live journal's bound, captures, the response with the shown 8,192-byte body and a separate request duration, and the end, all on one monotonic clock; sink failures never reach the live run; output chunks within 50 ms coalesce; verified by E7 and task 3.

    • request is a send attempt with request-withdrawn and request-sent marks; at most one open attempt; terminal entries close the request; the Application pane says Request sent by Codebook only with request-sent; verified by E7.

    • Output budget 2,000 entries / 2 MiB with output-truncated and SERVER_HISTORY_OUTPUT_TRUNCATED; structural headroom 1 MiB / 100 entries; queue bound 1,000 entries / 4 MiB dropping output only; source over 512 KiB stored as hash with too large; history start bounded at 2 s; verified by E7.

    • One seal coordinator per record joined by Stop, Save, dispose, self-exit and failure through the existing subscription; drain accepted appends, then end, then sealed.json; a timeout token stops a late seal from publishing; append-failed histories without end read as partial; verified by E1 and E3.

    • Server sealed.json stores all reasons as {code, params, text}, the capture outcome and the journal hash; one evaluator (presentable snapshots, matching top frame, scopes read) serves the live cache, library, Save and MCP; server Save never reads testResult; verified by E4.

    • A replay model per history (learner events without source, sequence lookup, stop number and hit, rehydrated snapshots, endedAtMs, verdicts) feeds the unchanged workspace select/supersede/commit path; a playhead on a storage-only entry restores the nearest earlier learner event; replay never calls the launcher or HTTP sender; verified by E5.

    • Writer, incremental scan and full read share per-profile journal rules over one test set; unsealed histories open their verified prefix, sealed hash mismatches stay refused, torn last lines are cut; verified by E3.

    • Learning complete requires the request, at least one recorded hit of every reached declared stop and the terminal (replaces the DX every-hit rule); missing lists cap at 20 plus a count; verified by task 6 and E4.

    • saveLearningMaterial reads, checks and writes the revision under the storage lock for test and server histories; the run resource re-reads the stored revision; verified by E6.

    • Three PRs, reader before producer: pt1 storage foundation, pt2 read path verified on fixtures with live server Save still refused, pt3 producer with API 1.9, skill 1.0.53, docs and N59 (replaces D1's up-to-three wording).

    • N59 compares three values from the stopped frame's local scope (the captured scope).

    Testing plan (moved from the body)

    Counts are estimates per task; each task's own list above names the required cases.

    Layer What (task) Count
    Unit entry schemas and writer rules, source dedupe and rehydration (2: 9); seal reasons (4: 12, the ten table rows plus complete and 5xx); status and Save texts, response-aware question and three outcome notices (5: 7); summary row with first reason and +n more (7: 5); catalog words, learner events, Stop <n> · hit <k>, response-state texts (8: 6); help, skill and description texts (6, 9: 4) +43
    Store v0.2.53.0 fixture opens, call-order numbering, server header round-trip, wrong folder refused (1: 4); other-window recording and refused delete, shared saved-study limit, delete (1, 7: 3); no-request removal, interrupted prefix, failing seal write, dispose past the close bound (4: 4) +11
    Host (harness, fake debugger, clock) written as it happens, race order, failed append, redaction at rest (3: 4); learner Stop and self-exit seals (4: 2); Save edge cases (5: 7); MCP citations and run resource fields (6: 4) +17
    Workspace replay open position, no-stop history, damaged prefix, other-window recording, lower frames, stop/hit and event moves, seek and back clearing a later response, non-stop moment, sequence link to request/response, explanation arriving while open, understanding, reopen (8: 15) +15
    Reader DOM server catalog words in the Study pane (8; AGENTS.md Reader DOM: a Study pane change gets a case) +1 case
    Real process (fixture server) a launched fixture server's run writes a sealed complete history (3; evidence ladder level 3, no_claim DAP binding) +1

    Plan approved (2026-10-28, /autoplan run codex-cycle-0059-20261028-114645)

    • Reviews: CEO (SELECTIVE EXPANSION; spec review loop 3 launches, 6 → 7 → 7, 13 of 14 last-pass issues verified after the cap), Design (5 → 9; mockups skipped: paid image generation needs owner permission, the v9 PNG governs), DX (POLISH; 5 → 8), Eng (scope accepted as-is; 0 critical gaps after amendments). Every phase ran a Claude subagent and a Codex voice (gpt-6-astra), both completed; consensus CEO 3/6, Design 5/7, DX 5/6, Eng 5/6, no User Challenge.
    • Gate: rec under the standing owner rule (「返事ができないので、選択肢はReccomendをpickしてください🙇」): d1 storage descriptor and UI adapter separate; d2 the N59 learning check fails N59 as a Major finding; d3 learning complete needs one cited hit per reached declared stop; d4 no persistence opt-out setting; d5 no partial-reason grouping; plan approved as-is.
    • Biggest changes from the draft: three PRs with the reader before the producer (pt1 storage foundation, pt2 read path, pt3 producer + N59); a typed history sink instead of the live journal callback; request attempts; one seal coordinator with drain vs closed; structured seal reasons; source stored once per hash; lean MCP event reads with three verdicts and coded missing lists; output and queue bounds that protect the terminal entries; cross-window revision lock for learning material.
    • Private review record: the Mac's ignored .gstack/tmp/autoplan/review-record.md (SHA-256 prefix f56b9375c526acd0); test plan ~/.gstack/projects/laststance-codebook/ryotamurakami-codex-cycle-0059-eng-review-test-plan-20261028-123600.md.
    • Next: task 0 (reach inventory on the pinned P08 clone), then pt1.

    Task 0: reach inventory (pinned P08 clone laststance/switch-time at 4f68953, Space local:codebook-qa, read from apps/api/src/app.ts, auth.ts, rpc/router.ts, rpc/base.ts)

    Method and path Guard One unauthenticated request reaches the handler and its database work? What else it needs
    GET /api/healthz none handler yes; no database —
    GET /api/auth-config none handler yes; no database (mailer presence only) —
    POST /api/auth/sign-up/email none (Better Auth) yes: before hook (hasUnstorableText), existing-address branch (answers 200 without a session, password hashed anyway), transactional user + account insert, databaseHooks.user.create.after → seedUser (default activities and settings) JSON body {name, email, password}
    POST /api/auth/sign-in/email none yes: user lookup, password check, session insert (used by N57/N58, excluded from N59) JSON body
    GET /api/auth/get-session session cookie handler yes; without a cookie no database read a session cookie for the database path
    Password reset and address verification routes mail server not active: mailed is null without SMTP_URL SMTP_URL
    POST /api/rpc/ping base handler yes; no database —
    /api/rpc/me, activities.*, switches.*, stats.*, excludedDays.*, settings.* authed (rpc/base.ts:55) no: refused without a session a prior sign-in request and its cookie

    N59 questions (from reachable rows, different from N57/N58's sign-in): VS Code: sign-up of a new address (hook → insert user/account in one transaction → seed default activities and settings → 200). Cursor: sign-up with an address that already has an account (hook → existing-account branch → password hashed anyway → 200 without a session).

    Recorded gap (AC-REAL-PROJECTS, server form): P08's application features (switches, activities, stats, settings) are all behind authed; explaining them needs an authenticated request (a sign-in, then the call with its cookie), which a server run cannot make (one unauthenticated declared request). This is the server form's next gap, not in this cycle's scope.

    Re-entry after context compaction (2026-10-28, implementing pt1)

    • Reads: PRODUCT_GOAL.md in full (goal version 10, 445 lines, final acceptance protocol included); this Issue's body and its four comments.
    • Image: docs/designs/assets/codebook-product-spec-v9.png opened with an image tool: 1024 × 1536, 1,878,402 bytes, SHA-256 f189ee82541a72ed981e3f7a0e21bd35a19b6601df1c7208671117a335caf2aa (matches Design target); regions 1 (live), 2 (replay), 3 (DeepWiki) and the shortcut strip found.
    • State: branch codex/cycle-0059-pt1 from origin/main 250ade84; pt1 (storage foundation, no producer) is being implemented in a subagent on the main checkout; native checks (N59) stay with the driving agent in pt3.

    pt1 progress (2026-10-28): implemented, verified, local reviews done, fixes in progress

    Implementation (codex/cycle-0059-pt1, subagent; not pushed yet): commits 24c3cc89 (v0.2.53.0 history fixture), b5d56706 (storage descriptor per profile, node-server profile with writer rules and bounds, writer draining accepted entries before its seal), 0b5db5f4 (one saved-study limit for saved studies, test and server histories in both directions), fba177d8 (journal integrity, structured seal, redaction at rest, profile separation tests), 160600a1 (dead-code and duplication baselines), plus the driving agent's 7fe6a6bc (timings of the nine new test files, so the shard plan splits the 20 s bounds file) and 63363961 (packaged README: the limit is shared in both directions).

    Re-executed by the driving agent on 63363961's tree (macOS, Node 24.22.1, LANG=en_US.UTF-8): pnpm --dir extension test 7992 tests, 7982 pass, 0 fail, 10 skipped (exit 0); typecheck, lint, health:static, dupes, dead-code, format:check exit 0; node --test extension/scripts/tests/testShards.test.mjs 101 pass, 0 fail.

    Plan items moved within the cycle: deleting a server history from another window is tested with the workspace Trash path in pt2; a token in output at rest needs the run's output redactor (pt3). Plan refinement: a stored source may read sourceUnavailable: 'too large' | 'not captured'.

    Local reviews (range 250ade84..63363961):

    • CodeRabbit CLI 0.9.1 (coderabbit review --agent --committed --base-commit 250ade84… -c .coderabbit.yaml, included reviews, no credits): completed, 3 findings (2 minor, 1 trivial).
    • open-code-review-delegate (OCR 1.13.3 selects files and rules, a host subagent reviews): 36 of 36 reviewable files reviewed (100 %); 13 default exclusions (README, fixture files, 9 test files); 1 high, 5 medium, 5 low.

    Disposition: the high and medium findings break pt1's own contracts (8b seal coordinator, structured seal, admission), so they are fixed in pt1 with red-first tests, as are the small lows:

    1. seal must close the writer to new appends when it begins (a late output made a clean run seal partial with an append failure);
    2. a retried seal appended a second end;
    3. a server seal could read complete without end and then be refused by the read path;
    4. an unbounded unavailable list could push the seal past its size limit;
    5. a stop whose source was not stored sealed complete; it becomes partial with a new code SERVER_HISTORY_SOURCE_UNAVAILABLE (The source at stop <n> was not recorded (<reason>).);
    6. an unreadable history directory failed browser saves; it counts no history there, as an unreadable store never blocked browser saves before;
    7. an abandon landing during the final publish;
    8. finish() doc;
    9. check() mutating progress before the line is durable;
    10. a test regex too broad;
    11. stale dead-code baseline ids.

    Not changed, with reason: configurationHash stays the SHA-256 of the original declaration (plan decision; the live run resource already exposes the same value, resources.ts:384).

    pt1 /ship review: non-critical findings kept for pt2/pt3 of this cycle

    AGENTS.md: in a feature cycle, /ship review steps answer non-critical findings Skip and fix critical ones before merge. The two critical findings of pass 1 were fixed in pt1:

    • 1d8e31f5: a long append-failure cause is cut to the seal's bound.
    • 1c3c3d9c: the run-start check and a recording's start count test and server histories.

    The skipped findings stay open here and are closed within this cycle (task of the part named), each with a test that fails without its fix:

    pt2 (read path)

    1. evaluateNodeServerCapture.ts:62: a re-read interrupted history with no end and no terminal entry reads captureComplete: true. Fix: it must read incomplete with the no-response reason. Codex reproduced it.
    2. nodeServerStorageDescriptor.ts:85: the incremental scan drops source entries, so the pre-seal summary misses SERVER_HISTORY_SOURCE_UNAVAILABLE. Fix: keep path, hash and sourceUnavailable in the scan state. Codex reproduced it.
    3. Untested writer state cells: sealed × abandon, abandoned × append/finish/abandon, seal-failed × abandon. Also untested: a second or early request-sent refused.
    4. Mask tests missing: the undecodable pair name in maskSecretFormPairs, and maskNodeServerConfiguration directly (body absent, composition).

    pt3 (producer and seal wiring)

    1. nodeServerHistoryWriter.ts:416: finish() takes end's time from durable entries only. A queued later entry makes end move time backward, and a clean run seals partial. Fix: use the largest accepted time. Reproduced by Codex; state-machines also found it.
    2. Seal version is the literal 1. Fix: use NODE_SERVER_HISTORY_FORMAT_VERSION.
    3. JSDoc cites an internal id (cutHistoryReason). Another JSDoc says "pt1's store" (historyStorageDescriptor).
    4. Admission counts differ by entry point: a history start counts archives, a recording start counts recordings. A history can take the last place between a recording's start and its archive. This predates pt1.
      • Decide with the producer.
      • Also: the lazy non-null closure over the repository in StudyWorkspace (not reachable today).
      • Also: the fail-open count for an unreadable history directory (a deliberate choice: an unreadable store never blocks browser saves).

    Version numbering: each PR of a multi-PR cycle takes one patch version, as Cycle 0057 did (pt1 0.2.50.0, pt2 0.2.51.0, pt3 0.2.52.0). So pt1 ships 0.2.54.0, and the plan's "CHANGELOG 0.2.54.0" for pt3 becomes pt3's own next patch version.

    Added to the pt3 list (from the local CodeRabbit CLI on PR 148's final range):

    1. A seal's serialized size is bounded only by the count of unavailable values, not by bytes.
      • What breaks: escaped or non-ASCII inspection paths appear in both the reason text and the params. 16 stops × 10 values with 512-character CJK paths can exceed the 256 KiB seal limit, and the seal is then never written.
      • Fix: cut each reason's path to a byte bound, so the worst-case seal fits.
      • Test: the maximum escaped, non-ASCII paths seal and read back.

    pt1 delivered (PR 148, merged as a16c28c4, 2026-10-28)

    Delivery chain, as AGENTS.md Delivery defines it:

    1. Local CodeRabbit CLI and open-code-review-delegate ran before /ship. All findings were fixed with red-first tests.
    2. /ship ran with two review passes. Pass 1 fixed 2 critical findings: the seal cause bound, and the run-start/recording-start admission. Pass 2 converged. 10 informational findings are kept for pt2/pt3 (listed in an earlier comment).
    3. PR 148 was opened with hosted CodeRabbit off (its check reads "skipping").
    4. Required CI passed on head 1972b170: 14 test shards, Build, TypeCheck, Lint, Format, Fallow, package, Reader DOM, and the Windows file-system job.
    5. The exact-HEAD gate pnpm --dir extension gate passed 15 of 15 on 1972b170 (macOS, Node 24.22.1), logs in the Mac's artifacts/gate/1972b170.
    6. Local CodeRabbit CLI ran on the final range 250ade84..1972b170: one minor finding, added to the pt3 list as item 9.
    7. Merged with gh pr merge 148 --squash --match-head-commit 1972b170.

    Release: 0.2.54.0 (each PR of this cycle takes one patch version). There is no native check in pt1. N59 runs on pt3.

    Task state:

    • Tasks 1, 2 and 4 are delivered for their store, writer and seal parts.
    • Moved within the cycle:
      • Deleting a server history from another window → pt2 (Trash path).
      • A token in output at rest → pt3 (task 3).
      • The 4 MiB pending bytes and the 2 s start bound → pt3.
      • The 16-page events test → pt2.
      • Service-wired seal tests → pt3.

    Next: pt2 (read path) on codex/cycle-0059-pt2 from origin/main a16c28c4. It covers tasks 6 (read parts), 7 and 8, E5–E6, and the four pt2 findings.

    • The four pt2 review findings, fixed in 6b1bfdcb:
      • An interrupted history with no end and no terminal entry now reads capture-incomplete with the no-response reason.
      • The incremental scan keeps unstored-source facts.
      • Tests added for the writer state cells, a second request-sent mark and the mask cases.
    • Learning material, in 912ab73b:
      • There is a material codec per profile.
      • saveLearningMaterial reads, checks the revision and writes under the storage lock.
      • Server citations of request, stop (by source hash), output, response and request failure are supported.
      • A bad citation is refused with INVALID_REFERENCE, naming the reference and the nearest valid sequences.
    • Library rows for server histories, in 12e42e5d, with title, request line, status, and complete/partial with the first reason and +n more.
    • MCP reads, in 3477d93f:
      • The list covers both profiles.
      • The events list is lean, with pages pinned to the first page's prefix.
      • Each entry has its own detail resource.
      • The three verdicts are returned, with missing lists capped at 20 plus a count.
    • The replay model and the Application projection, in e96f5b47.
    • Shared builders, which removed a clone group (88eae5e1), and timings (63cec560).

    Full suite: 8063 tests, 0 failures. typecheck, lint, health:static, dupes, dead-code and format:check all exit 0. These are the subagent's runs; the driving agent re-runs them before /ship.

    Deviations recorded:

    • Deletion: test replays cannot be deleted from Saved studies today, so server rows get the same refusal in server words. The plan's "delete follows the test rows unchanged" holds; there is no Trash move.
    • Codes: an interrupted history with no answer reuses SERVER_HISTORY_NO_RESPONSE_STOPPED (the recording ended before the server answered), keeping the plan's ten codes.

    In progress: opening a server replay in the workspace (task 8): the Study and Application panes, the server catalog words, the states table, E5 and E6 at workspace level, and one Reader DOM case.

    pt2 /ship review: non-critical findings kept for pt3 of this cycle

    The /ship review of pt2 found no critical finding. Under AGENTS.md (a feature cycle answers non-critical findings Skip), the findings below are kept for pt3. pt3 fixes each one with a test that fails without its fix. They extend the pt3 list from the pt1 comments.

    Truth at a recorded moment (PRODUCT_GOAL shared historical moment)

    1. projectServerApplication.ts:58-66: the request region decides Request sent by Codebook or Request not sent from journal-wide marks. A moment before the send or withdrawal mark already shows that later outcome. Codex reproduced it and core found it too. Fix: keep each mark's sequence and decide from marks at or before the selected event.
    2. presentServerHistory.ts:41: an interrupted unsealed history shows only the generic no-seal reason. It drops the evaluated capture reasons, such as an unreached declared stop. Codex reproduced it. Fix: carry the shared capture evaluation for unsealed histories.
    3. nodeHistoryPlaybackController.ts:80: the timeline end after the last event cannot be reached. Play and seek snap back to the last event. Codex reproduced it. Fix: represent the terminal end on the timeline, or end the range at the last event.

    Display safety

    1. Recorded texts reach a display without control stripping:
      • requestFailureCode in the Saved studies row (stripNodeHistorySummaryTexts).
      • The first declared stop path used as the source slot name (adaptServerReplay.toTestShapedHistory).
      • Captured snapshot names and values in the display copy. Confirm against the test path first.
    2. wordServerCaptureReason re-implements wordNodeCaptureReason and drops its length cut. Fix: share the core with a wording parameter.

    Save route and errors (pt3 publishes API 1.9)

    1. service.ts:2198: explainNodeHistorySchema parses content with the test-profile schema first. Server request, response and request-failed citations are refused before the server parser runs. Fix: make the tool and Study-pane content profile-aware.
    2. The test-profile material save can now meet StorageLockHeldError under the storage lock, and that error is not mapped to a retryable StudyError. Also, the material save re-reads and parses the whole journal while holding the lock. Fix: compute citable events before the lock.
    3. A failed summarize at open is swallowed (readServerHistoryOpening). It shows "explanation not saved" with no diagnostics.
    4. One malformed stop makes every resource read of the history fail with a raw ZodError (readServerHistoryResource, buildServerReplayModel).
    5. The through pin is unbounded and unclamped.
    6. A stop citation is checked by source hash only. The stop index is not checked.

    Lifecycle

    1. Close drains only the test store's reader-position writes (studyWorkspace.ts:9726). Fix: settle every store through the repository.
    2. A false "alive" writer judgement keeps a crashed server recording unopenable, and also unremovable, because server rows cannot be deleted.

    Maintainability

    1. inReplayWords swaps wording with replaceAll('test replay', 'server replay') on inline sentences. Fix: catalog both forms.
    2. serverReplayViews keeps ~70 lines of projection and memo logic in studyWorkspace.ts. Fix: extract it as a shared util.
    3. indexServerOutput is unused outside tests. Separately, an as const profile literal should be replaced.

    Added to the pt3 list (from the local CodeRabbit CLI on PR 149's final range):

    1. The Study pane's waiting line (studyHtml.ts:2627) reads "no replay" when only server histories are saved. It should read the server catalog's "choose a replay" line.
    2. Test-helper duplication: VERDICTS, modelOf and viewAt are duplicated across projectServerApplication.test.ts and serverReplayApplicationFindings.test.ts. The harness accessors are duplicated across the three server workspace test files. Move them to extension/src/tests/utils/.

    pt2 delivered (PR 149, merged as 2b437b0b, 2026-10-28)

    Delivery chain:

    1. Local CodeRabbit CLI and open-code-review-delegate ran before /ship. Their twelve findings were fixed (ten with red-first tests).
    2. /ship ran one review pass with no critical finding, which converged. Its informational findings are pt3 items 10–25.
    3. PR 149 was opened, with hosted CodeRabbit off.
    4. The exact-HEAD gate on acd8d01f failed at 14-health, as did the Fallow CI job: the new webview function applyServerRegions had CRAP 49.5, above the bound of 30. Fixed in 56997de3 by splitting it, with no baseline re-saved. CodeRabbit CLI on that fix: 0 findings.
    5. Required CI passed on 56997de3.
    6. The gate passed 15 of 15 on 56997de3 (macOS, Node 24.22.1).
    7. Local CodeRabbit CLI ran on the final range: 5 non-critical findings, added to the pt3 list as items 26–27.
    8. Merged with gh pr merge 149 --squash --match-head-commit 56997de3.

    Release: 0.2.55.0. Learners cannot reach a server replay yet, because nothing writes one until pt3.

    Next: pt3 (the producer) on codex/cycle-0059-pt3 from origin/main 2b437b0b. It covers:

    • tasks 3, 4 (wiring), 5, 6 (publication) and 9, plus E7;
    • every pt3 item from this Issue's comments (items 5–27 and the moved pt1 items);
    • then N59 in VS Code and Cursor, operated by the driving agent.

    Re-entry after context compaction (2026-10-28, implementing pt3)

    • Reads: PRODUCT_GOAL.md in full (goal version 10, 444 lines, final acceptance protocol included); this Issue's body and its 13 comments.
    • Image: docs/designs/assets/codebook-product-spec-v9.png opened with an image tool: 1024 × 1536, 1,878,402 bytes, SHA-256 f189ee82541a72ed981e3f7a0e21bd35a19b6601df1c7208671117a335caf2aa (matches Design target); regions 1 (live), 2 (replay), 3 (DeepWiki) and the shortcut strip found.
    • State: branch codex/cycle-0059-pt3, 13 commits above origin/main 2b437b0b, clean, not pushed; no open PR; Node 24.22.1.
    • pt3 so far (implementing subagent, not yet re-run by the driving agent): history sink and one seal coordinator, start bounded at 2 s with the live run kept (D8), server Save with the response-aware question and three outcomes, MCP API 1.9 publication, skill 1.0.53 and README; items 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13 (a, b), 14, 15, 16, 19, 25, 26 and the moved pt1 items.
    • Still open in pt3: items 8, 12, 13c, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 27 (harness accessors), live run verdicts read at resource time, and five E7 cases. A second implementing subagent closes them; then the driving agent re-runs the suite, the local reviews, /ship and N59.

    pt3 rehearsal in VS Code (development check, not N59; 2026-10-28)

    • Identity: Space local:codebook-qa; VS Code 1.142.0, profile Codebook QA 0049; Copilot Chat Agent on GPT-6.1 Terra (picker: no GPT-6.1 Luna in the main list). Candidate VSIX from pt3 27b0101f, SHA-256 88bf2f70e06d4089d1e7ed639315ed4e084759f71a4d676b194fe2b2e9123a9c, installed normally (laststance.codebook@0.2.55). Target: P08 clone at 4f68953, clean.
    • Question: a path not used by N57, N58 or N59: sign-up with a name holding text that cannot be stored, asking where the API refuses it and what it returns. The chat declared one stop at apps/api/src/auth.ts:70 (the before hook's BAD_REQUEST throw), sent the request, explained at the stop, continued to the 400 response, stopped the run and saved its explanation through codebook_explain_node_history.
    • What worked:
      • Status texts: Recording explanation · Listening on :4100, then Paused at stop 1 of 1, Responded 400, Recording finished · Save learning replay.
      • The history was written as the run happened: output, request, request-sent, source, stop (8 frames), response 400 with body {"message":"Invalid input"}, output and end stopped. Journal 13,221 bytes.
      • Save gave the partial notice with Open replay. The replay opened with the Learning summary, the Application pane (request line, Request sent by Codebook, the response state per moment), the captured auth.ts:70 and the recorded Local values and call stack in the native debugger.
      • At the response moment, source and debugger read "Not recorded at this moment". Moving back cleared the response and restored the stop.
    • Critical defect found: every real server history seals partial with SERVER_HISTORY_SNAPSHOT_MISSING (The debugger state at stop 1 was not recorded.), although the snapshot is presentable (the replay debugger showed it).
      • Cause: isPresentableServerStop requires every top-frame scope to be read. The capture deliberately keeps only the stopped frame's Local scope and marks Module and Global "not captured".
      • Why tests missed it: the real-process test fed a synthetic snapshot without those scopes.
      • Consequence: N59's positive flow would read Partial. This is fixed in pt3 before N59, with a red-first test on the capture's real snapshot shape.

    pt3 progress (2026-10-28): implementation complete; local review findings being fixed

    Branch codex/cycle-0059-pt3 is 27 commits above 2b437b0b and has not been pushed. HEAD is 1f1ad3dc.

    Issue items closed in pt3:

    • Items 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 13a, 13b, 14, 15, 16, 19, 25, 26: done by the first implementing pass.
    • Items 8, 12, 17, 18, 20, 21, 23, 24, 27: done by the second pass, plus live run verdicts read at resource time and the five missing E7 cases.
    • Moved pt1 items: the token in output at rest, the 4 MiB queue bound, the 2 s start bound and the service-wired seal tests.
    • Rehearsal Critical: fixed in a5ab7acb. A stop shaped like a real capture (Local read, Module and Global excluded by design) is presentable. The test drives the real captureReplayDebugSnapshot into a sealed history; without the fix it read partial, not complete.

    Closed with evidence:

    • Item 13c: server replay event rows print the sanitized shownModel (studyWorkspace.ts:13782), which strips frame names, paths, codes, content type and output. Snapshot names and values reach only the native debugger through the replay debug adapter. That is the same surface and text the live debugger shows, and the test-replay path does the same by design (sanitizeNodeTestHistory leaves snapshots untouched).
    • Item 22: the server store judges writers with the test store's judgeNodeTestWriter. New tests (nodeServerHistoryCrashedWriter.test.ts) show that a gone pid, a reused pid and a foreign host each read as interrupted, not alive.

    Exact-HEAD gate on 1f1ad3dc: checks 1–13 passed, including 8177 tests with 0 failures, the five Reader DOM checks and the package tests. 14-health was refused because its coverage run hit one failing test. studyWorkspaceServerReplayFindings "an understanding choice for a server replay whose folder is gone…" surfaced a raw ENOENT … rename reader-position.json.tmp. This is a load-dependent race in the pt2 read path, and it is being fixed with a deterministic test.

    Local reviews (range 2b437b0b..1f1ad3dc):

    • CodeRabbit CLI 0.9.1 (--agent --committed -c .coderabbit.yaml, included reviews, no credits): completed, 7 findings (4 minor, 3 trivial).
    • open-code-review-delegate (OCR 1.13.3 selects the files and rules, two host subagents review): 69 of 69 reviewable files reviewed (100%). 43 files were excluded: 40 by default path (tests, README, skill), 2 with unsupported extensions, 1 deleted. 0 critical, 0 high, 2 medium, 7 low or informational.
    • Disposition: every valid finding is being fixed with a red-first test before /ship. The two mediums are a stop captured after the response failing the writer, and a silent Save after a failed seal.

    Next: re-run the gate, then /ship (0.2.56.0), CI, then N59 in VS Code and in Cursor on the candidate.

    pt3 shipped as PR 150; N59 frozen before execution (2026-10-28)

    PR #150 (0.2.56.0, head c4236c87) is open with hosted CodeRabbit off.

    /ship ran three review passes and stopped at its third fixing cycle with converged:false, as the ship review limit allows.

    • Critical fixed in ad04de91 and 8dfd8e08: the summary read after the seal escaped the seal bound, so a stalled read could hold Stop, Save and the next run. Codex's adversarial challenge reproduced it.
    • Last-round findings fixed in f4fe3651.
    • Informational findings carried: 21 from pass 1, the Codex High about sealed.json after an abandon, and 3 from the post-cap verification pass. They are listed in the PR body's Review notes and become the next cycle's tasks.
    • Tests: 8,200, of which 8,190 pass, 0 fail and 10 are skipped.

    Candidate for N59: VSIX 0.2.56.0 built from c4236c87, SHA-256 ebc9cb45737506cae0cfb13fc28293f600ccafbd87c89772ec3b3d8d63be1ab0.

    N59 VS Code (frozen; evaluator criteria only, never given to the chat or the skill)

    • Question: sign-up of a new address. The chat gets it in natural Japanese.
    • Required causal links:
      1. The POST /api/auth/sign-up/email request reaches Better Auth's handler through the /api/auth/* route (apps/api/src/app.ts).
      2. The before hook finds no text Postgres cannot store and lets the request through.
      3. Better Auth finds no user with the address (the new-address branch).
      4. The user and account rows are inserted in one transaction, with the password hashed.
      5. databaseHooks.user.create.after runs seedUser with the new user's id, inserting default settings and activities.
      6. The response is 200 with the new user and no session (autoSignIn: false).
    • Learning-check question: why does a brand-new account already have activities, and which value connects them to the new user?
    • Learning-check answer, derivable from the replay: seedUser runs in the user-create after hook with the created user's id, and the default activities and settings are inserted with that userId.

    N59 Cursor (frozen)

    • Question: sign-up with an address that already has an account, worded differently from the VS Code question.
    • Required causal links:
      1. The request reaches Better Auth's handler through /api/auth/*.
      2. The before hook lets the request through.
      3. Better Auth finds the existing user for the address.
      4. The existing-account branch hashes the password anyway, inserts no user or account and does not seed.
      5. The response is 200 without a session.
    • Learning-check question: why does signing up with an address that already has an account answer 200, and what does the server still do with the password?
    • Learning-check answer, derivable from the replay: the existing-account branch answers 200 without a session, so the answer does not reveal that the account exists. It still hashes the password to keep the timing equal, and it inserts nothing.

    Common to both hosts:

    • Space local:codebook-qa, the P08 clone at 4f68953 (clean) with its local Postgres, the candidate VSIX above installed normally, OBS Window Capture with its preflight.
    • Models: VS Code uses Copilot Chat Agent on GPT-6.1 Luna if the picker lists it after searching 6.1 and luna, else GPT-6.1 Terra. Cursor uses Agent on Grok 4.6 high with Fast on. After observed credit exhaustion, the Codex extension.
    • The pass conditions are the body's N59 list.

    N59 VS Code: PASS on the second attempt (2026-10-28, candidate c4236c87)

    Identities

    • Host: Space local:codebook-qa (macOS 26 VM), VS Code 1.142.0, profile Codebook QA 0049, window [Code] app.ts — switch-time — Codebook QA 0049.
    • Chat: Copilot Chat Agent on GPT-6.1 Terra. The picker has no GPT-6.1 Luna: searching 6.1 lists GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6.1 Terra, and searching luna lists GPT-5.6 Luna and GPT-6 Luna.
    • Candidate: VSIX 0.2.56.0 SHA-256 ebc9cb45737506cae0cfb13fc28293f600ccafbd87c89772ec3b3d8d63be1ab0, installed normally (laststance.codebook@0.2.56).
    • Target: P08 clone at 4f68953, clean, with local Postgres.
    • Recorder: OBS 32.2.2 Window Capture, Metal renderer, 1920 × 1050.
      • Preflight passed: a terminal line drawn and cleared showed in the frames; real 30 fps; silent track at -91 dB. SHA-256 b41b1653…df51b.

    Attempt 1: failed attempt, not a product FAIL

    • Question: 「新しいメールアドレスでサインアップすると、APIの中でアカウントができあがるまでに何が起きるの?サーバーを実際に動かして、大事なところで止めながら説明して。」
    • Stops declared by the chat: app.ts:65, auth.ts:69 and seed-user.ts:19.
    • What went wrong: the chat paused for about 2 minutes, so the P08 server's own 25 s request deadline (REQUEST_DEADLINE_MS) expired. The server answered 500 (DeadlineError: deadline passed before commit), and stop 3 was never reached.
    • What Codebook did, correctly: the history sealed partial with Declared stop 3 was not reached. (journal 30,829 bytes). Save answered Server replay saved as partial: Declared stop 3 was not reached., and the status read Learning partially saved. The chat explained the 500 as observed.
    • Classification: the chat's stop pacing, per the frozen procedure.

    Attempt 2

    • Question: the same frozen causal question in new wording: 「さっきは止まっている時間が長すぎてアプリのタイムアウトになったので、もう一度お願い。新しいアドレスでの登録がアカウント完成まで通る流れを、各停止では手短に値を確かめてすぐ先へ進めながら説明して。」
    • Live:
      • Stop 1, app.ts:65: Local c = Context{…} and this = undefined. Top frames <anonymous> app.ts 65:19, dispatch 22:23, <anonymous> 22:46.
      • Stop 2, auth.ts:69: ctx = {path: '/sign-up/email', …} and this. Top frames <anonymous> auth.ts 69:17, Object.internalHandler 15:27, process.processTicksAndRejections.
      • Stop 3, seed-user.ts:19: this, tx = NodePgTransaction, and Closure (seedUser). Top frames <anonymous> seed-user.ts 19:14, <anonymous> 211:30, NodePgSession.transaction 56:25.
      • The response was 200, and the chat explained each stop live.
      • The local scopes hold two named values each, so all of them were compared, plus the recorded facts c.req.method, ctx.path and userId.
    • History: sealed complete with no reasons; journal 35,830 bytes, hash 54fd22c8…059d.
    • Save: one click. The chat had already stopped the run, so nothing was asked. The notice read Server replay saved. and the status Learning saved · Open replay. The library row read メール登録をサーバーで追う · Server replay · POST /api/auth/sign-up/email → 200 · Saved.
    • Replay, opened from Saved studies with the chat closed and the server down:
      • Next event (stops 1→2→3, then the response), Previous and Next stop, and non-adjacent seeks (the response to stop 1, then stop 3) each showed the recorded source at the recorded line.
      • The native debugger showed the same values and frames as live at every stop.
      • Traversing stop 2→1→2 three times gave identical frames: crop hashes 641c95fc6e/f37d76472f (debugger) and 411d89f1e0/d4bf52579c (editor), the same every time and the same after the seek.
      • The request (45.30 s) and the response (64.53 s) read Source and debugger not recorded at this moment., with no highlight and no values.
      • The request region reads Request opened by Codebook; not sent yet at this moment. before the send mark and Request sent by Codebook after it.
    • No request sent during the replay:
      • lsof :4100 sampled 158 times through the traversal, all with 0 listeners.
      • Output › Codebook gained no line: 8 lines before and after.
    • Summary links: Show request · 45.30 s, Inspect Stop 1 · 45.49 s and Show response · 64.53 s each moved the playhead. The Application pane and the native state agreed at each.
    • Understanding: changed only by the checkbox, which wrote understood: true. After Developer: Reload Window and reopening the replay, the playhead (Stop 3 · 61.32 s) and the understanding returned, and the debugger values and frames matched again.
    • 5A: hiding the side bar and reopening it with Learning summary kept the moment, the understanding and the reading position. The transport stayed visible.
    • Motion: the native 30 fps frames of a stop 2 → stop 3 transition show the old highlight cleared before the new moment; no stale highlight appears with a new time.

    Causal links (frozen), as the saved explanation covers them

    1. The route hands the request to Better Auth: observed (stop 1, c.req.method POST).
    2. The before hook lets the request through: observed (stop 2, ctx.path, and the run continued).
    3. Better Auth finds no user with the address: not covered. It is implied by the created user, and the explanation does not claim it.
    4. The user and account are inserted in one transaction: partly observed. The response shows the created user (id, createdAt); the account insert and the hashing are not covered or claimed.
    5. seedUser runs with the new user's id: observed (stop 3, userId equals the response user.id). The setting and activity inserts are source-derived, and the explanation says so: 「ソースは…投入する。停止は挿入前で、各行は直接照会していない」.
    6. The response is 200 with no session: observed (token: null, emailVerified: false).

    No link the explanation claims is misclassified. Each step cites the right journal entry (request 4, stops 7, 9 and 11 with their source hashes and declared stops, response 12).

    Learning check (replay only, chat closed): correct

    • Question: why does a brand-new account already have activities, and which value connects them?
    • Answer from the replay:
      • At stop 2 the captured auth.ts source shows databaseHooks.user.create.after → seedUser(created.id).
      • At stop 3, seedUser holds userId 'xJmQ…ewZT', and its source inserts settings and DEFAULT_ACTIVITIES (six) with that userId.
      • The response's user.id is the same id.
    • Effort: 3 moments (stop 2, stop 3, response), about 4 moves and 60 s.

    Diagnostics

    • Learner actions from the answer to the open replay: Save, then opening the library row (2 clicks).
    • Chat: 41 steps in 2 min 28 s. From the seal (07:24:04) to the saved explanation (07:24:47) took 43 s.

    Region 2 comparison (D034, 1920 × 1050)

    • Matches: the recorded application (here the request, output and response), the recorded executed source in a native editor, the native debugger's recorded values and stack, the Learning summary with the sequence diagram and step links, and one transport with stop ticks and unrecorded spans.
    • Difference: the Learning summary lives in the primary side bar and takes turns with Run and Debug, through the Activity Bar and its Show Variables button. The image has the summary at the right in the chat's place, with the debugger visible at the same time. This is the existing replay composition, not a pt3 change.

    N59 Cursor: PASS on the second attempt (2026-10-28, candidate c4236c87)

    Identities

    • Host: Space local:codebook-qa, Cursor 3.27.12 (VS Code 1.128.0 base), window [Cursor] app.ts — switch-time.
    • Chat: Agent on Grok 4.6 High with Fast on. A new Agent defaults to Grok 4.7 High, so Grok 4.6 was picked each time.
    • Candidate: VSIX ebc9cb45…be1ab0, installed normally (laststance.codebook@0.2.56).
    • Skill: updated to 1.0.53 by Codebook: Set Up AI Chat. The installed copy differs from the VSIX copy only in the filled-in publisher path.
    • Recorder: OBS Window Capture on the Cursor window, 1920 × 1050. Preflight passed: a terminal line written while Cursor sat behind VS Code appeared in the frames, 30 fps, silent at -91 dB, d36d4367…3030.
      • This is the first OBS take verified on a Cursor window.

    Attempt 1: failed attempt

    • Question: 「すでにアカウントがあるメールアドレスでもう一度サインアップしたら、サーバーはどう処理して何を返す?実際にサーバーを動かして、要所で止めながら確かめて。止めている間もアプリの時間は進むので、各停止は手短にお願い。」
    • What the chat did: it declared four stops, one of them in auth-mail.ts:52, which the clone cannot reach without SMTP_URL. It then ran twice: first a new address, then the same address.
    • Result: both histories sealed partial with Declared stop 3 (and 4) was not reached., and Save read Learning partially saved. That was the chat's choice of stops.

    Attempt 2

    • Question: the same frozen causal question in new wording: 「登録済みのアドレス codebook-taken@example.com でサインアップを1回だけ送ると、サーバーの中で何が起きて、なぜ成功したような応答になるの?止めるのはそのリクエストが実際に通るところだけにして、各停止は手短にお願い。」
    • Live:
      • Stop 1, app.ts:66: this = null plus Closure. Frames <anonymous> app.ts, AsyncLocalStorage.run, <anonymous> app.ts, then dispatch, cors2, …
      • Stop 2, auth.ts:69: ctx = {path: '/sign-up/email', …} and this = undefined. Frames <anonymous> auth.ts, Object.internalHandler, process.processTicksAndRejections, …
      • Recorded facts: c.req.path, ctx.path and ctx.body.email.
      • The response was 200 with token: null.
    • History: sealed complete with no reasons; journal 22,077 bytes, hash a21e514e…8d17.
    • Save: the notice read Server replay saved. and the status ✓ Learning saved · Open replay, with the tooltip "Saved: the server history is complete and the chat explained it."
    • Library row: Taken-email sign-up looks like success · Server replay · POST /api/auth/sign-up/email → 200 · Saved. The two attempt-1 rows read Partial: Declared stop 3 was not reached.
    • Replay, opened from Saved studies with the chat closed and the server down:
      • Previous and Next event, and the stop 2 → 1 → 2 traversal three times, kept the editor crop identical (907b7013d6 and 97fc481175).
      • The debugger values and frames matched live at both stops. Only the highlighted variable row differed between captures; the values and frames were the same.
      • The response moment reads Recorded source · Not recorded at this moment with an empty debugger, Response 200 · application/json and the body.
      • The request moment reads Request opened by Codebook; not sent yet at this moment.
      • A non-adjacent seek from the response to stop 1 restored it.
    • No request sent during the replay:
      • lsof :4100 sampled 300 times, all with 0 listeners.
      • Output › Codebook gained no sent line: 3 runs, the last at 07:56:57.
    • Summary links: Show request · 50.03 s, Inspect Stop 2 · 61.81 s and Show response · 66.70 s each moved the playhead and the panes.
    • Understanding and reload: the checkbox wrote understood: true. After Developer: Reload Window and reopening, the playhead (stop 2 · 61.81 s, debugger values and frames) and the understanding returned.
    • 5A: closing the side bar and reopening it with Learning summary kept the moment, the understanding and the reading position.

    Causal links (frozen), as the saved explanation covers them

    1. The request reaches Better Auth through /api/auth/*: observed (stop 1).
    2. The before hook lets it through: observed (stop 2 and the continuation).
    3. Better Auth finds the existing user: not covered. The explanation says plainly that one answer cannot tell an existing row from a new one.
    4. The existing-account branch, with the password hashed and nothing inserted or seeded: the "200, no session" part is source-derived, as step "Why 200 · source-derived" from autoSignIn: false. The hashing and no-insert parts are not covered in the saved explanation.
    5. 200 without a session: observed.

    No link the explanation claims is misclassified.

    Learning check (replay only): correct

    • Question: why does signing up with an existing address answer 200, and what does the server still do with the password?
    • Answer from the replay:
      • Stop 2's captured auth.ts lines 52–55 say that with no sign-in on sign-up, Better Auth answers an existing address like a new one (200, no session, password hashed anyway) instead of 422, so the answer does not reveal the account.
      • The saved step "Why 200 · source-derived" and the response (token: null) agree.
    • Effort: 2 moments (stop 2, response), about 3 moves and 45 s.

    Observations (non-critical, carried)

    • Replay open refused after the reload.
      • First refusal: Focus the first main source group before preparing the Application. I had pressed Cmd+Shift+D while it opened.
      • Second refusal: …the first editor group (column 1) is empty … Open a file in that group or close it, then try again.
      • The message's recovery, View: Join All Editor Groups, then opened it. This is the existing Cursor composition precondition.
    • Mislabeled diagnostic: Output › Codebook logs those refusals as open:test-replay · profile node-test for a server replay.

    Evidence (private, under artifacts/c59/n59/cursor)

    • Take: 1,353.3 s, 30 fps, 40,598 frames, SHA-256 6ccff3c10c4104810b11551c251989c7b77c61dd38ec8b1972f760bba8fccd26.
    • Silent copy: 0badcb3b…ea.
    • Stills archive: fbe87d6f…3979.
    • Frames: 13,533 at 10 fps.
    • Live stops: extracted from the take at 706 s and 716 s.

    Cycle 0059 closed: a server run is saved as a learning replay (demonstrated)

    Outcome: demonstrated. In both editors, a /codebook question about the repository's own Node server was explained live at real stops. Save learning replay saved it, the Saved studies row read Saved, and the Server replay replayed the recorded request, executed source, recorded debugger values and response with one playhead, without resending the request.

    • N59 VS Code (Copilot Chat, GPT-6.1 Terra): PASS on the second attempt. Evidence.
    • N59 Cursor (Agent, Grok 4.6 High Fast): PASS on the second attempt. Evidence.
    • Both runs used the pinned P08 clone 4f68953 in the Space. This is development evidence and earns no final-acceptance credit.

    Delivery

    Part PR Merge Version
    pt1: storage foundation #148 a16c28c4 0.2.54.0
    pt2: read path #149 2b437b0b 0.2.55.0
    pt3: producer, Save, MCP API 1.9, skill 1.0.53 #150 ea674f6d 0.2.56.0

    pt3's delivery chain:

    1. Local CodeRabbit CLI and open-code-review-delegate (69 of 69 files) ran first, and their findings were fixed.
    2. /ship ran three review passes and reached the ship review limit with converged:false. The Critical (a summary read that escaped the seal bound) was fixed in ad04de91 and 8dfd8e08. The last round's findings were fixed in c8958d2f.
    3. CodeRabbit's final-range Major (a truncated local scope read as a missing snapshot) was fixed in 8a101038, red first.
    4. Required CI and the exact-HEAD gate (15 of 15, 8,202 tests, 0 failures) passed on 8a101038, followed by the merge.
    5. N59 ran on candidate c4236c87. The fixes after it (c8958d2f, 8a101038) touch the summary-read and presentability paths; N59 did not run again on them.

    Tasks

    • Done: tasks 0–11 and E1–E7, plus the in-cycle review items 5–27 (item 13c and item 22 closed with evidence).
    • Evidence: each task's closing evidence is in the pt1, pt2 and pt3 comments above.

    Gap rows changed by this cycle

    • AC-SAVE: server runs are now saved (N59 in both hosts).
    • AC-REPLAY: Server replay is shown (N59 in both hosts).
      • Layout difference against image region 2: the Learning summary shares the primary side bar with Run and Debug, instead of standing in the chat's place beside a visible debugger. This is the existing replay composition, still an open product gap.
    • AC-SKILL: skill 1.0.53 saves a server explanation through codebook_explain_node_history (both hosts).
    • AC-REAL-PROJECTS: server save and replay now have development evidence on P08. Remaining server gap: authenticated and multi-request routes (task 0 inventory).
    • AC-LEARNING: unchanged (E8, per-step understanding).
    • AC-SHORTCUTS: unchanged (keybindings).

    Carried defects (next cycle: bug-fix)

    Major: recorded in Issue #151 under the ship review limit.

    1. A seal that publishes and then stalls is reported as failed.
    2. Save and the run resource judge from a stale seal-time summary.
    3. A failed history append is not shown in the status item.
    4. A secret or private path split across output chunks is stored unmasked.
    5. Snapshot free texts and values miss the full masking.

    Minor and trivial:

    1. end.elapsedMs is always the last event's time, so the trailing interval is lost (service.ts, seal).
    2. A stop after a withdrawal, or a send mark after a request failure, fails the writer (nodeServerHistorySink.ts).
    3. The partial-save notice text is not control-stripped (nodeServerLearningSave.ts).
    4. git status at history start can run a hostile core.fsmonitor (readRepositoryRevision.ts).
    5. The sink keeps per-chunk work after output was cut.
    6. A stopped server run is evicted at once, so its run resource answers NOT_FOUND for the verdicts.
    7. Verdicts are re-summarized on every run-resource read, and the read map is never pruned.
    8. A summarize that returns undefined replaces the stored summary (service.ts refresh).
    9. Open replay right after a save, before the catalog refreshes, is classified as a browser recording (studyWorkspace.ts).
    10. The sink uses bare entry-field cut lengths.
    11. The CHANGELOG rehearsal sentence lacks its source revision and dirty state.
    12. A clean stop's seal can take an earlier, unrelated record.error as its failure code.
    13. save-node-learning is offered while the history is still recording.
    14. Cursor: a replay open after Reload Window with an empty first editor group is refused until the message's recovery. Its Output entry labels a server replay open:test-replay · profile node-test.
    15. Tests and maintenance:
      • the status item's negative guard;
      • a fixed 20 ms sleep (nodeServerMcpPublication.test.ts);
      • untested state cells: transient seal retry, request failure after the send mark, stop after a request failure, seek past the last event, select with no time ahead;
      • the SaveSerializer doc example;
      • stale fallow-ignore comments;
      • advisory: reuse gitExecutablePath, and keep one seal-failure sentence builder.

    Next cycle: a bug-fix cycle that fixes items 1–20, each with a test that fails without its fix. /spec writes its Issue from this comment.
