Cycle 0057: a Node HTTP server of a real repository is explained live (node-server profile) #139

Closed

Description

@ryota-murakami

Outcome

A learner can ask the editor's standard chat (/codebook) how a Node HTTP server of a real repository handles a request. The chat AI starts the repository's own server under Codebook, sends one declared request, and pauses in the actual route-handler source. The learner inspects the live values in the native debugger, the AI explains and continues, and the response is reported as observed. This is the server execution form of AC-LIVE that AC-REAL-PROJECTS needs for P07 (laststance/nsx, Express) and P08 (laststance/switch-time, Hono). Today Codebook has only the repository-browser and node-test profiles.

This is a feature cycle (AGENTS.md Cycle rule). Cycle 0056 (#135) closed with nothing carried. The increment is O2 of #132 and the next cycle named in #135's closing comment. The plan below is the version approved by /autoplan (CEO, DX and Eng reviews; Design skipped, no UI scope); every accepted review requirement is folded into its task.

  • Learner. A question about how the API handles a request (validation, a database read or write, the response) runs the real server and stops in the real handler. Before, the chat could only read source or explain a browser page or a test.
  • Agent. The skill routes server and API questions to a new node-server profile. The AI reads codebook_status and codebook://help/node-server, declares the entry, the port, one request and the stops, and drives start → http-request → continue → stop through the existing MCP tools and their API 1.8 receipts.
  • Engineering. A launcher, inspector binding, listener-ownership check and request sender are built from the generic parts of the two existing profiles. They keep the rule "no arbitrary commands, ports or roots".

Gap audit (all 13 rows, baseline origin/main 5b992ea5, v0.2.49.0)

Cycle 0056 changed only the rows its tasks name: test replays in Cursor, the LLM Wiki view, the reader and the Wiki run lifecycle. N56 evidence is development evidence on nextjs-dashboard 1936e41 and fills no final row.

Row (a) Implementation (b) Proof (c) Next action
AC-LIVE Match, narrow: repository-browser (Next App Router) and node-test (Vitest). No server form. Captured values reach the chat unmasked in every profile (goal: credentials stay out of chat). N54 both hosts; profile code unchanged since. This cycle: node-server live profile; a redaction contract for every profile.
AC-SAVE Match for browser and test runs. A server run has no save (out of scope); its status says so. N54 both hosts. This cycle: the truthful "not available for server runs" state; save is the next cycle.
AC-REPLAY Match (N55-F4 fixed in #135). N56 step 1 Cursor; N52/N54. Regression only (redaction must keep replay tests green).
AC-GAPS Match. N50 both hosts. Regression only.
AC-LEARNING Minor mismatch: no per-step I understand this step (E8). N49, N50. Later candidate.
AC-WIKI Match. N55, N56 (steps 3, 6). Regression only.
AC-WIKI-UPDATE Match. N55, N56 (step 4, task 33). Regression only.
AC-SOURCE-LINKS Match. N55 both hosts. Regression only.
AC-ENTRY Match. N55, N56 step 5. Regression only.
AC-DESKTOP Match at D034 on macOS. macOS only. The per-system cycle that goal v10 owes.
AC-SHORTCUTS Partial: no contributes.keybindings. N55 (Wiki ? list). Later candidate.
AC-SKILL Match. Skill 1.0.50 has no server route. N56 step 6. This cycle: server route in the skill (version moves).
AC-REAL-PROJECTS Large mismatch. Missing forms: Node server (P07, P08), Chrome MV3 (P06, P07), Vite or Expo web UI, Pages Router (P01), Node Examples. Development target only. This cycle: the Node server form (P07, P08 server rows).

Tasks

Each task closes with its change and the test that guards it (protects=…; fails_when=…; no_claim=…), or with recorded evidence.

Evidence ladder. Each level proves only itself: (1) the Part A spike, direct CDP from a script; (2) host tests, the workspace harness with a fake editor, DAP, process table, listener tool and clock; (3) real-process tests, the product's launcher and request sender against a real child process, the test's own CDP client standing in for pwa-node (no_claim: the DAP binding and pwa-node attach); (4) native, pwa-node in an installed editor. The spike's success is not product evidence, and host tests prove no real process.

Part A: headless spike on pinned clones (bounded experiment, before any product code)

Evidence goes to the Mac's ignored artifacts/cycle-0057/spike/. Part A finishes before task 6 starts; its verdict comment precedes pt1's first launcher commit.

  1. Pinned targets and their local prerequisites. (evidence: Part A verdict, task 1) Clone laststance/switch-time at 4f68953 and laststance/nsx at 502545c7 into QA-owned folders (~/qa/c57/switch-time, ~/qa/c57/nsx); the owner's checkouts stay untouched. Run S1 and S2 first on paths without a database (switch-time /api/healthz), then each repository's documented local stack (switch-time compose.yaml, Postgres 18, .env from .env.example; nsx compose.dev.yml, MySQL, .env from .env.sample, prisma migrate dev). Locally generated secrets only; the .env files never enter Git, an Issue or a PR. Record the setup burden (commands, minutes, failures).
  2. S1: launch and attach. (evidence: Part A verdict: S1 holds; registration before release PASS for ESM, request-time lines for CommonJS) With cwd at the package root (switch-time apps/api + src/server.ts; nsx root + server/index.ts): node --inspect-brk=127.0.0.1:0 --import <tsx loader> <entry>, where <tsx loader> is the file the package's own tsx exports as . (dist/loader.mjs in tsx 4.23.15), resolved with Node's resolution from the package root. Record:
    • where the first pause sits (entry or tsx loader);
    • pass or fail: a TypeScript URL breakpoint registers before the entry pause is released. If it fails, the run's order becomes release → wait for the binding → stopsHitAtStart, written here as a new expectation version before pt1;
    • the loader's realpath (inside the repository under pnpm's default per-project virtual store);
    • lsof presence and its listener line; whether the server forks or uses cluster;
    • the port it listens on (switch-time PORT from its .env, default 4100, apps/api/src/env.ts:12; nsx 4000, server/index.ts:93).
Falsified by: no source-mapped breakpoint on the .ts line, or no start with --import; then try the tsx CLI with --inspect-brk as S1b.
  3. S2: a request-driven pause and the observed response. (evidence: Part A verdict, five runs, every port freed) A request pauses at the handler with readable locals (Debugger.evaluateOnCallFrame); after resume the response is observed; closing the group frees the port. Paths: switch-time GET /api/healthz (apps/api/src/app.ts:54), one database-backed switch-time path Part A picks (input, a branch or validation, a data read or write); nsx GET /api/health (200 with MySQL up, 503 with it stopped). Falsified by: the pause lands in compiled or loader code, locals cannot be read, or the port stays bound.
  4. Verdict. (evidence: Part A verdict; expected values frozen; one new expectation, Stop v2) Per target: commands, line hit, values read, responses, timings, failures. Freeze the expected values later criteria use (status, body excerpt, stop line, one readable local). Name the launch form (S1 or S1b). Also record:
    • Launch fidelity: the target's normal start (its package.json script, for example tsx watch src/server.ts) against Codebook's launch: environment (env file loading, NODE_ENV, variables expected from the shell), start-up steps, and a representative path's response; a mismatch becomes a new expectation version before task 6.
    • Supported-shapes table for the nine projects' Node server rows (P07, P08): what fits, what is refused (watch mode, child-process listeners, a global virtual store).
    • Learning questions: at least three natural questions per target with their needs (authentication, prior state, number of requests, database), marking which fit one unauthenticated request. N57's questions come from these; the rest become later candidates.

Part B: the node-server live profile (implementation; red-first tests)

  1. Configuration (src/nodeServerConfigSchemas.ts, pt1). (fixed in 4ff53d2b, PR v0.2.50.0 feat: credentials in captured values and output read [masked] before the chat or a saved history sees them (Cycle 0057 pt1) #140)
{ version: 1, adapter: 'node-server', book, packageRoot?: '.', entry, loader?: 'tsx' | 'node', port,
      request: { method: 'GET'|'POST'|'PUT'|'PATCH'|'DELETE', path,
                 contentType?: 'application/json'|'text/plain'|'application/x-www-form-urlencoded', body? },
      source, inspections, additionalStops }
    • book, source, inspections, additionalStops (≤7) have node-test's shapes (nodeTestConfigSchemas.ts:38-104); source and every stop are repository paths inside the repository by realpath.
    • packageRoot is a repository path, default .. entry is relative to packageRoot, a .ts/.mts/.cts/.js/.mjs/.cjs file inside it by realpath. loader defaults from the entry's extension (TypeScript → tsx, JavaScript → node); a TypeScript entry with loader: 'node' is refused.
    • port is an integer 1024–65535: the port the server's own code listens on. Codebook never sets PORT or any variable for it; it only checks the declared port ("no arbitrary ports", configuredProfile.ts:55).
    • request.path starts with /, ≤2,048 characters, a query string allowed; refused: scheme, host, fragment, .. segments, percent-encoded dots or slashes (%2e, %2f, %5c), a backslash, control characters, CR or LF. body is UTF-8 ≤16,384 bytes, needs contentType; GET and DELETE carry none.
    • INVALID_CONFIGURATION lists every violation with its field path and the expected value or range, and names codebook://help/node-server.
    • The tsx loader is resolved as in S1; missing, or a realpath outside the repository (as with pnpm's enableGlobalVirtualStore), is refused with NODE_SERVER_SOURCE_REFUSED naming that cause.
  2. Launcher (src/utils/launchNodeServer.ts, pt1). (fixed in 4ff53d2b, PR v0.2.50.0 feat: credentials in captured values and output read [masked] before the chat or a saved history sees them (Cycle 0057 pt1) #140) Spawns node --inspect-brk=127.0.0.1:0 [--import <tsx loader>] <entry> with cwd packageRoot in a detached process group and returns once Node announces its inspector endpoint (readNodeInspectorEndpoint); readiness is the run's job.
    • Environment: exactly the inherited-variable allowlist of buildNodeTestEnvironment (PATH, HOME, TMPDIR, SHELL, LANG, LC_ALL, PNPM_HOME, USER, LOGNAME; src/utils/buildNodeTestEnvironment.ts exports it) plus NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, SSL_CERT_FILE, SSL_CERT_DIR, without node-test's CI and NODE_ENV and without proxy variables. NODE_ENV is unset, so the server's own default applies. Codebook never reads or writes .env files.
    • The launch journal records the argv with sanitized paths, the inherited variable names (never values), the loader's realpath, the Node version and secretEnvironmentInherited: false.
    • Reused: assertDevelopmentPortFree, ownedDevelopmentPorts (a declared port held by Codebook's own stopping run is waited for up to 5,000 ms before PORT_UNAVAILABLE), the bounded stamped output of launchNodeTest.
    • Real-process test (CI): a test-only plain-JS fixture server under src/tests/fixtures/node-server/ (excluded from the VSIX; package tests assert it): endpoint announced on the bound port, release, readiness, a GET, close with the port free. The fixture handles SIGTERM gracefully, so the close tests Stop v2's order (detach, then TERM).
  3. Listener-tool helper (src/utils/listenerToolPath.ts, pt1). (fixed in 4ff53d2b, PR v0.2.50.0 feat: credentials in captured values and output read [masked] before the chat or a saved history sees them (Cycle 0057 pt1) #140) Beside psProgramPath: lsof only from /usr/sbin/lsof or /usr/bin/lsof; ss only on Linux from /usr/bin/ss, /bin/ss, /usr/sbin/ss or /sbin/ss (Homebrew's ss on macOS is iproute2mac, a shell script); never looked up in the search path; each query times out after 3 s (PORT_OWNER_UNKNOWN).
  4. Redaction contract (pt1, every profile). (fixed in 4ff53d2b, PR v0.2.50.0 feat: credentials in captured values and output read [masked] before the chat or a saved history sees them (Cycle 0057 pt1) #140) One function applied before every publication or persistence boundary: inspection facts, variables, debugger snapshots (captureReplayDebugSnapshot), output events and their history, response previews, Output diagnostics, error causes.
    • Names match on tokenized words (camelCase, snake_case, kebab-case): password, passwd, secret, token as a word (accessToken yes, tokenCount no), apiKey/api_key, authorization, cookie, privateKey, credential, session; sortKey stays visible. A secret-named object masks its whole subtree.
    • Values: URL userinfo passwords, JWTs, Bearer tokens, sk-, ghp_, github_pat_, AKIA keys, PEM blocks, replaced by [masked].
    • Output is redacted statefully per channel, holding at most 8 KiB of an incomplete trailing token, always before truncation.
    • The native debugger is the editor's own and still shows real values to the learner. CHANGELOG and README say what is masked, what is not (no secret-content detector), and that browser and test values captured after the update may read [masked] while saved histories are unchanged. Existing browser and node-test replay tests run unchanged.
  5. Run (src/ownedNodeServerRun.ts and profile descriptor src/nodeServerProfile.ts, pt2). (fixed in 6ce0908e, PR v0.2.51.0 feat: the chat explains a repository's own Node HTTP server live, paused in its route handler (Cycle 0057 pt2) #141; Stop expectation D14 v2 in its comment)
    • Preparation order: trust (requireWorkspace, src/environment.ts:71, else PREREQUISITE_MISSING), one active run (BUSY), schema, realpaths, loader and port checked before anything is spawned; launch; attach pwa-node (sourceMaps: true, continueOnAttach: false) bound by bindOwnedNodeTestDebugSession with a session-name parameter (codebook node server <runId>; node-test keeps its name) and verifyNodeTestInspectorOwnership (cwd = packageRoot realpath, pgid) at the entry pause; arm OwnedRepositoryBreakpoints per Part A's order; release; readiness.
    • Pauses during preparation: the entry pause is continued exactly once; an owned breakpoint hit before readiness is recorded in stopsHitAtStart (so the AI can say the request may not reach that line) and continued; every other pause (learner breakpoint, debugger;, exception, pause button) is the learner's: never resumed, state learner-paused, readiness budget suspended within the pause-hold bound.
    • Readiness: poll 127.0.0.1:<port> then [::1]:<port>, 250 ms connect timeout each, within 30 s (NODE_SERVER_READY_TIMEOUT_MS); when both accept, 127.0.0.1.
    • Listener ownership (task 7's tool): records of family, address, port and pid; every listener that can accept the selected endpoint must be the launched process; a listener in a fork or cluster child (the debugger does not control it) or in a foreign process ends the start with LISTENER_NOT_OWNED; a port that accepts while the tool shows no listener is LISTENER_NOT_OWNED; no tool or a timeout is PORT_OWNER_UNKNOWN. A server bound to 0.0.0.0 or :: is accepted (requests go to loopback only; README limit).
    • Start failures: exit before readiness → SERVER_EXITED with exit code or signal and the masked last output (≤4,096 characters); timeout → SERVER_NOT_LISTENING naming the declared port and, when the launched process listens elsewhere, the corrected declaration (port: <n>; the inspector port is never named); attach refused, no endpoint within 45 s (NODE_TEST_ATTACH_TIMEOUT_MS) or a stop bound elsewhere → RUNTIME_FAILED naming the step and the run's history URI.
    • Cleanup: owned cleanup (group, debugger session, owned listeners) is separate from port availability: once owned resources are gone, the port claim and the run slot are released even if a verified foreign listener holds the port, which is reported apart; a leader exiting while a group member lives makes Codebook close and verify the whole group. Deactivating the extension or closing the window closes the owned group and releases the claim.
    • Orphans (TD-7): at launch the run records pid, process group, leader start time, working-folder realpath, inspector port and declared port in workspace storage; on activation a recorded group whose leader still matches start time and folder is closed (TERM, then KILL) with an Output entry; a non-matching record is dropped without any signal.
  6. MCP lifecycle, states and requests (pt2). (fixed in 6ce0908e, PR v0.2.51.0 feat: the chat explains a repository's own Node HTTP server live, paused in its route handler (Cycle 0057 pt2) #141)
    • API 1.8 lifecycle: codebook_start returns its receipt at once and prepares asynchronously (same key and arguments replay the receipt); the run reads ready with nextActions [http-request], or ends with its error. codebook_action {action:'http-request'} returns its receipt at once; the same key replays it after a lost response; another key once sent gets REQUEST_ALREADY_SENT. The run reads request-in-flight with the action's key until it is paused(i), responded, request-failed, learner-paused or unattributed. codebook_continue with the copied participants.server.continueArguments and answer next returns the next state; a stop during that wait answers stopped, a learner pause answers learner-paused (results, not errors). codebook_status and the run always show the state, the current stop with facts and continuation arguments, and the last response or error, so a lost response is recovered by reading, never by sending again.
    • One state × call table (state rows: preparing, ready, request-in-flight, paused, learner-paused, unattributed, responded, request-failed, stopping, stopped; call columns: start, http-request, continue, stop) generates the refusal tests: RUN_NOT_READY, REQUEST_ALREADY_SENT (before RUN_NOT_READY), NO_PAUSE, LEARNER_PAUSED (before every other refusal of these calls), STALE_PAUSE, BUSY.
    • Pause classification: inside the request window, an owned hit (one of the armed hitBreakpointIds at its verified top-frame location) is attributed to the declared request by timing (attribution: timing in its facts; the request carries x-codebook-run: <runId>); an owned hit while ready, responded or request-failed is unattributed with learner-pause rules; every other pause is the learner's (node-server.learner-paused, never resumed); a native Continue on a declared stop is node-server.learner-resumed and the run goes on.
    • Pause identity: declaredStopIndex (zero-based), stopNumber (one-based), run-wide pauseGeneration; continuation arguments carry the generation and are reserved atomically (a stale one gets STALE_PAUSE); each hit during the request is captured, up to 16 captures per request, then owned breakpoints are retired and the request continues uncaptured (reported); all are retired when the request ends. stopsReached lists zero-based indices in hit order.
    • State-changing requests (TD-6): before a POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE is sent, a native modal shows method, path and that the server uses the repository's own configured database; Send sends it; Cancel sends nothing, keeps ready and answers REQUEST_NOT_CONFIRMED. The chat AI cannot answer the modal.
    • Request sender (src/utils/sendDeclaredRequest.ts): node:http, agent: false, no proxy, to the address that accepted at readiness; Host: localhost:<port>, Accept-Encoding: identity, Connection: close, User-Agent: codebook, Content-Length for a body, no Expect. Immediately before the bytes are written, the connected socket's server process is read and must be the launched process, else LISTENER_NOT_OWNED with zero bytes sent; no retries or reconnects. Redirects are not followed (a 3xx is the response, Location shown as a path when same-origin, else (another origin)). At most 1 MiB is read (socket destroyed there, (cut at 1 MiB)); the shown body is the first 8,192 bytes as UTF-8 for text/*, application/json, +json (cut at a code point, … <n> more bytes; invalid UTF-8 shown with U+FFFD and (not valid UTF-8)), else (binary, <n> bytes). HTTP 4xx and 5xx are observed responses (responded).
    • Request failures: state request-failed (REQUEST_FAILED reset; REQUEST_TIMEOUT after 30 s of running time, counted by an accumulator driven by pause and resume events, with a 15-minute wall-time backstop; SERVER_EXITED before the answer); PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED (a pause beyond 300 s, REPOSITORY_PAUSE_HOLD_TIMEOUT_MS) ends the run in stopped and resumes nothing. responded and request-failed end the request, not the server.
    • Error channel: a call refused synchronously returns isError: true with StudyError.describe(); a preparation failure ends the run with its error on the run resource; an execution failure after readiness sets the run's error and state, and a codebook_continue whose wait ends in one returns isError: true with the run state beside it (as stopToolResult).
    • Stop (expectation v2, Part A): end the owned pwa-node session (detach, which resumes the target) before TERM to the group; v1 (TERM first) is falsified: a server with its own SIGTERM handler waits for the attached debugger until KILL (switch-time, 5.0–5.1 s ×4; detached first: exit 0 in 103 ms).
    • Stop: one monotonic 10 s deadline from admission, KILL by 5 s, budget shared by debugger release, group exit, listener checks and output settling; idempotent; at the deadline the retryable RUNTIME_FAILED names the owned pid or port that remains (state stopping); after two failed stops the message names the pid for the learner to end.
    • Capture model: for the run's lifetime and in memory, the ordered snapshots, source hashes, pause generations, request and response, in a shape next cycle's durable server journal can serialize. No durable store this cycle (the node-test history schema is fixed to node-test, src/nodeTestHistorySchemas.ts:43-44).
    • Events (whitelisted, unknown fields omitted as at service.ts:3349-3489): node-server.output (channel, text ≤4,096), .request (method, path, body bytes, address), .response (status, content type, body text or binary note, elapsed ms), .learner-paused, .learner-resumed, .failure (code, sanitized cause). Output › Codebook writes one entry for the request and one for the response or failure, naming the run id (a start failure writes only its failure entry), derived from these events.
    • Service integration: src/service.ts and src/protocol.ts gain explicit node-server integration for admission, receipt retention, state projection, continuation waiting, execution-error conversion, deadlines and cleanup; server mechanics stay in src/ownedNodeServerRun.ts and src/utils/sendDeclaredRequest.ts. Profile unions gain node-server (runtime.ts:167-176, service.ts:1147-1154, schemas.ts:26-53, studySchemas.ts:45, environment.ts:322-334).
    • Status and preflight: codebook_status lists node-server with Node, the repository's tsx when needed, a listener tool, ps and a supported platform, reading not ready with each missing item named; native Windows reads not ready, and a start there gets PREREQUISITE_MISSING. Capabilities gain http-request.
  7. Recovery text and help (pt2). (fixed in 6ce0908e, PR v0.2.51.0 feat: the chat explains a repository's own Node HTTP server live, paused in its route handler (Cycle 0057 pt2) #141)
    • src/errors.ts ERROR_RECOVERY and codebook://help/errors entries for NODE_SERVER_SOURCE_REFUSED, PORT_UNAVAILABLE, LISTENER_NOT_OWNED, PORT_OWNER_UNKNOWN, RUN_NOT_READY, REQUEST_ALREADY_SENT, REQUEST_NOT_CONFIRMED, NO_PAUSE, LEARNER_PAUSED, SERVER_EXITED, SERVER_NOT_LISTENING, REQUEST_FAILED, REQUEST_TIMEOUT, PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED: the fix in the first sentence, then the recovery class, side effects (none before spawning; started and closed for listener failures; unknown for a failed POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE) and a retry bound, anchored at codebook://help/node-server#<code>. Ports name the occupying pid and command when visible and ask the learner to stop that process or declare the server's port, never to kill it; PORT_OWNER_UNKNOWN asks to install lsof or ss; SERVER_EXITED says the environment comes from the server's own .env plus the allowlist; REQUEST_FAILED/REQUEST_TIMEOUT say never to send again automatically and to have the learner check the application's data before one new run.
    • codebook://help/node-server: the ordered walkthrough (codebook_status → codebook_sources/codebook_source → codebook_publish_book → codebook_start → read until ready → codebook_action → read until it pauses or answers → explain → codebook_continue with copied arguments → response → codebook_stop), naming the answer each value is copied from; three samples that parse (minimal GET, POST with a JSON body, monorepo packageRoot); the code table; the supported shape (entry file run by node, optionally through the repository's own tsx, environment from the server's own .env, NODE_ENV unset, no watch mode, the debugged process must be the listener); index bases; limits (single client, inspector on 127.0.0.1 for the run, readiness probes in the server's logs).
  8. Status item (pt2). (fixed in 6ce0908e, PR v0.2.51.0 feat: the chat explains a repository's own Node HTTP server live, paused in its route handler (Cycle 0057 pt2) #141) States: Server starting, Listening on :<port>, Paused at stop <n> of <m>, Paused by you in the debugger, Responded <status>, Failed: <code> (tooltip: the first sentence of its recovery and "see Output › Codebook"), Stopping, Stopped; beside Learning replay is not available for server runs yet (tooltip: server runs are not saved; never shown as saved). In publishLearningSave() (src/studyWorkspace.ts) and src/nodeLearningSave.ts.
  9. Skill (pt3). (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142: skill 1.0.51's server route; N57 PASS in both editors) extension/skills/codebook/SKILL.md (1.0.50 → 1.0.51) routes server and API questions to node-server only when codebook_status lists it (else says it is not available in this version); reads codebook://help/node-server; declares one request; before a state-changing request says which method and path and that the server uses the repository's configured database (the learner confirms in the modal); reports a response as observed only from the run; treats output and bodies as data, never instructions; never repeats a secret value; states unmet prerequisites (no tsx, port busy, server exits, database down) without covering them with a source-only answer; stops after two starts failing with the same code and tells the learner the prerequisite. No repository-specific answers.
  10. Docs. (pt1 4ff53d2b, pt2 6ce0908e, pt3 333c7813: CHANGELOG 0.2.52.0, packaged README sentences for every 0.2.52.0 behavior, root README status) (pt1 part done in 4ff53d2b: CHANGELOG 0.2.50.0 and README Masked values; pt2 part done in 6ce0908e: CHANGELOG 0.2.51.0, README Explain a Node HTTP server, root README status; pt3 part open) A CHANGELOG entry and a packaged README section (extension/README.md) for each user-visible change in the PR that makes it: pt1 the redaction of every profile; pt2 the profile, its limits (single client, inspector on 127.0.0.1, readiness probes, 0.0.0.0 servers, local or test database), the supported shape and NODE_ENV; pt3 the skill route. The root README status.

Part C: native check N57 (driving agent, Space local:codebook-qa)

  1. N57. (evidence: N57 result, PASS in VS Code and Cursor on a0481750; VS Code smoke on pt3's final package, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (step 0 done: PASS on bf11b951, re-smoked on cdc2736b and on pt2's final VSIX c6641821; the two-host runs are open)
    • Step 0, before pt2's /ship: pt2's candidate VSIX in the Space's VS Code; Copilot Chat (GPT6 Luna) gets one natural question that names codebook://help/node-server; the chat AI declares the configuration itself and drives start → http-request → pause on a .ts line → values → continue → response → stop. Record the candidate hash, declaration attempts, whether the AI found the walkthrough within 2 minutes, the observed stop, and lsof's presence and listener line. A failing smoke is fixed in pt2 before it ships.
    • Setup: the pinned P08 clone in the Space (O3), Postgres 18 by Homebrew (no Docker), pnpm install --frozen-lockfile, .env from .env.example with locally generated secrets, the repository's migrate command. Record cold setup (minutes, interventions).
    • Runs: VS Code (Copilot Chat, GPT6 Luna; search the picker for terra and 6.1 first) and Cursor (Agent, Grok 4.6 High); per host a different database-backed path from Part A's fitting questions, with its natural question, the causal links the explanation must show and the values to observe frozen here before execution. /api/healthz is the connectivity step only.
    • Pass: primary signal, the AI's own declaration starts without human edits (attempts counted, ≤2); then the handler stop with values in the native debugger, the explanation of the frozen links and the observed response; prepared first explanation ≤5 minutes. Also: the confirmation modal for a state-changing request, a truthful failure with Postgres stopped (no source-only answer), and a stopped run that frees the port.
    • Record: OBS takes with inspected frames, the loaded skill identity, the install and migrate commands, the .env keys (never values). N57 covers Hono (P08) only; Express (P07) has ladder-level-3 evidence only and the closing comment names its native check as not run.

pt3 carried items (from pt2's reviews and native smokes; feature cycle: carried to pt3, fixed before the cycle closes)

  1. Skill: a server run needs no Study workspace (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: N57 step 0 observation 1; seen again in pt2's final re-smoke). The chat opened the Study workspace by habit. Task 13's route says server runs use the native debugger and the status bar. Closes with the skill text + a skill test.
  2. Skill: never read .env values (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: N57 step 0 observation 3). The chat read .env with its own file tool. Task 13's route says the server loads its own .env and the chat never reads its values. Closes with the skill text + a skill test.
  3. The entry pause reveals a dependency file (evidence: no attach option avoids VS Code's reveal; js-debug's only auto-resume, continueOnAttach, would run code before the stops are armed; N57 O-2) (source: N57 step 0 observation 2; seen again in the final re-smoke; Minor, cosmetic). VS Code shows node_modules/…/constants-*.mjs at the --inspect-brk entry pause. Closes with a fix that keeps the entry pause off-screen, or evidence that no attach option avoids VS Code's own reveal, + a test.
  4. VS Code's tool summaries misstate the action (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: N57 step 0 observation 4 and the final re-smoke). VS Code summarized codebook_action as a POST for a GET, and codebook_start as "Posts data to …". Clarify the tool descriptions so the summary follows the run. Closes with the description change + a test of the text, or evidence it is not fixable from the extension.
  5. Journal work after truncation (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 /ship Step 9 pass 1, createNodeServerJournal.ts:69, performance). After the output budget is spent, every chunk still runs the whitelist, sanitizer and onEvent. Closes with an early return + a test counting the calls.
  6. runningTimeLimit untested cells (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1, runningTimeLimit.ts:35 and :58). idle × hold-before-start, double start, release-without-hold, stopped × start, hold after stop. Closes with tests for each cell (and a fix where one fails).
  7. The confirmation dialog names no content type or body size (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1, askToSendStateChangingRequest.ts:29; the join key and the run name were fixed in pt2). The learner confirms a body the dialog does not describe. Closes with the content type and the body size (or a redacted excerpt) in the dialog + a test.
  8. The state × call table runs only against the fake run (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1, nodeServerStateTable.test.ts:155). The real run answers NO_PAUSE in stopping × continue where the table expects STALE_PAUSE (the service pre-check decides). Closes with the table also run against the real run class or the service path + agreement.
  9. The shown body is sanitized after the cut (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1 shapeResponseBody.ts:85; round 1 projectNodeServerState.ts). A private path straddling the 8,192-byte cut keeps its prefix in the run view (the journal sanitizes first). Closes with sanitize-before-cut + a straddling test.
  10. A retried stop signals the group without checking it (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1, ownedNodeServerRun.ts stop retry; also launchNodeServer.close's retry). A reused process-group id could receive SIGKILL. Closes with a leader identity check (start time, folder) before every retry signal + a test.
  11. The orphan sweep drops records it could not verify or close; it checks only the leader (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1 and round 1, reapNodeServerOrphans.ts). A still-running server loses its only record; a surviving group member after the leader died is never signalled. Closes with keeping the record unless the identity positively mismatches or the group is gone, reporting a leaderless group + tests.
  12. Stopping a learner-paused run outside the request window detaches first (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pass 1 and round 1; D14 v2 keeps Stop v2 there by design). The detach resumes the learner's paused code before SIGTERM. Closes with a D14 v3 decision (kill-first for every native pause, or the documented reason to keep Stop v2) + a test.
  13. The close sequence's SIGKILL lands at about 6 s (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: round 1, launchNodeServer.ts close; plan task 10 says KILL by 5 s within the 10 s deadline). Closes with detach, TERM grace and the group wait fitted into the deadline + a timing test.
  14. The journal's retained-event byte bound has no direct test (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 /ship Step 7 gap, MAX_RETAINED_EVENT_BYTES). Closes with the test.
  15. The target's own deadlines keep running while the server is paused (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2's final re-smoke: switch-time's 25 s request clock answered 500 after the two stops). Codebook's REQUEST_TIMEOUT counts running time only; the app's clocks count wall time. Closes with a sentence in codebook://help/node-server and the skill route (a long pause can change the app's answer; say so when it happens) + help and skill tests.
  16. The help's NODE_SERVER_SOURCE_REFUSED row omits a stop's file (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 local CodeRabbit CLI on the final range, nodeServerHelp.ts:101, minor). Closes with the when text naming a stop's file + the help test.
  17. The wall-time backstop reports "30 s of running time" (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 local CodeRabbit CLI, ownedNodeServerRun.ts timeOutRequest, minor). The 15-minute wall limit says the running-time limit fired. Closes with a message per limit + a test.
  18. The 0.2.51.0 CHANGELOG smoke record names no source revision or dirty state (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 local CodeRabbit CLI, CHANGELOG.md, minor). Closes with the candidates' revisions (bf11b951, cdc2736b, c6641821, clean) in the entry.
  19. An incomplete trailing UTF-8 sequence loses the "(not valid UTF-8)" note (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 local CodeRabbit CLI rounds 3 and 4, shapeResponseBody.ts:50-52, minor). A body cut inside its last character, and an uncut body that ends in an incomplete sequence, are shown without the note. Closes with the note for both + tests.
  20. The packaged README does not name the 10 s stop deadline the CHANGELOG names (fixed in 333c7813, PR v0.2.52.0 feat: /codebook sends server and API questions to the live server run, and a stop never signals a process it cannot confirm (Cycle 0057 pt3) #142) (source: pt2 local CodeRabbit CLI round 4, the .coderabbit.yaml CHANGELOG rule, minor). Closes with the README sentence.

Acceptance criteria

  1. Part A's verdict (task 4) is recorded before Part B's code lands, with expected values, the launch form, the registration-order result, launch fidelity, the supported-shapes table and the learning questions. Any change it forces is a new expectation version here.
  2. Real-process tests (ladder level 3), each checked on the final head of the PR that delivers it:
    • (a) pt1: the fixture launcher test (announced inspector port, release, readiness, GET, close) runs in CI and locally;
    • (b) pt2: the fixture run tests (stop, value, continue, response; foreign listener replacement with zero bytes sent; IPv6 owned and IPv4 foreign; fork child refused; ::1-only server) in CI;
    • (c) pt2: pinned-clone tests run locally on the Mac with the local stacks up (clone paths from CODEBOOK_NODE_SERVER_CLONES; skipped in CI with the reason pinned clones and their databases are local-only; a skip never satisfies this; the PR records command, counts and head): switch-time GET /api/healthz (200, {"status":"ok"}) and the Part A path; nsx /api/health (200 up, 503 down); each hits the declared stop with the recorded local and frees the port. pt3 re-runs (b) and (c) only if it changes run code.
  3. codebook_status lists node-server with its prerequisites; codebook://help/node-server and codebook://help/errors serve the walkthrough, samples and every new code; every cell of the state × call table has a test asserting its result or code.
  4. Each failure ends within its bound with a sanitized, masked cause: SERVER_EXITED, SERVER_NOT_LISTENING, LISTENER_NOT_OWNED, PORT_OWNER_UNKNOWN, RUNTIME_FAILED, REQUEST_FAILED, REQUEST_TIMEOUT, REQUEST_NOT_CONFIRMED, PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED. After a failed start, PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED or stop, no owned process or claim remains within 10 s; a foreign listener never holds the run slot. A learner or unattributed pause is never resumed; a redirect is not followed; no request byte reaches an unowned process.
  5. The planted-variable test (a parent variable and HTTP_PROXY absent from the child and every event) and the redaction corpus tests pass, and existing browser and node-test replay tests stay green.
  6. The skill routes a server question to node-server (skill tests), and its version is 1.0.51.
  7. N57 passes in both hosts on the pinned P08 clone (task 15), with evidence hashes here. Otherwise it is recorded NOT RUN with the reason, which leaves this criterion open (a feature cycle may carry it); the closing comment then reports delivered implementation and ladder-level-3 proof apart from the Outcome's native result. The cycle's Outcome is demonstrated only when N57 passes in both hosts. Express (P07) native evidence is named as not run either way.
  8. Every PR passes the 15-check exact-HEAD gate on its final tree, in this order: from extension/: pnpm format:check, typecheck, lint, health:static, dupes, dead-code, test; the five Reader DOM checks (node extension/scripts/<check>-qa.mjs verify <new folder>: study-bootstrap, wiki-reader-dom, study-reading-pose, understanding-focus, repository-return); from extension/: pnpm test:package, then pnpm health; from the root: node --test .codex/restore-product-context.test.mjs. It also needs required CI and the local CodeRabbit CLI on its final range (O6: no hosted review).
  9. Each PR is complete for what it exposes: pt1 the redaction of every profile with its CHANGELOG and README (the server modules stay internal); pt2 the profile through MCP with README, CHANGELOG and help; pt3 the skill route with its README sentence.
  10. pnpm --dir extension health:static and pnpm --dir extension health pass against their committed baselines; new functions stay within cyclomatic 20, cognitive 15 and CRAP 30.

Testing plan

Layer What Count
Unit config defaults and every refusal (path encodings, CRLF, body rules, loader rules, two-violation list); tsx loader resolution and outside-realpath cause; env allowlist; listener-tool paths and timeout; request headers and shaping (text, cut, binary, invalid UTF-8); redaction corpus, nested secrets, split tokens, 4,096 and PEM cuts; help samples parse; recovery entries for every new code about 30
Host (harness, fake DAP, process table, listener tool, clock) preparation order; entry pause once; stopsHitAtStart; learner breakpoint, exception and pause button during preparation; session-name bind; PORT_OWNER_UNKNOWN; start failures (exit, not listening with corrected port, attach, bind elsewhere, history URI); trust; BUSY; own stopping claim; API 1.8 receipts (same key, new key, request-in-flight, continue-next to learner-paused and stopped); the state × call table; attribution inside and outside the window; generations, stale continuation, capture budget; learner resume and learner-resumed; confirmation Send and Cancel; request failures and the timer accumulator; redirect; error channel at the MCP boundary (REQUEST_FAILED, 503); stop deadline with hung parts; foreign listener releases the slot; leader exit with a surviving child; deactivate cleanup; orphan record matching and not; capture model; event whitelist; Output entries; status texts and tooltips; preflight without a listener tool and on win32; walkthrough followed with returned identities; planted variables; masking in facts, results, events and history about 70
Real process: fixture (CI) launcher loop with the announced port; exit before ready; not listening; fork child refused; foreign listener; replacement between ready and request (zero bytes); IPv6 owned and IPv4 foreign; ::1-only server; full run loop with stop, value, continue, response about 9
Real process: pinned clones (local only) switch-time healthz and the Part A path; nsx health up and down 4
Skill routing when listed and when not; prerequisites wording; state-changing sentence; retry bound 5
Native N57 step 0 smoke; N57 in both hosts on a database-backed path 1 smoke + ≥2 takes

Rules for the implementing agent

  1. Acceptance criteria are the protects / fails_when / no_claim profile of each test. Never "make the tests pass".
  2. Real code and real tests land in the same change; a placeholder, a stub assertion or a deferred test is not done.
  3. Any change to a test, validator, CI step, timeout, tolerance, threshold, snapshot or suppression pragma is reported on its own line with its justification, before any other result.
  4. A reported command names the command and its observed result; a command not run is not reported; stderr is never silenced in a cited command.
  5. A report is a claim until the parent re-executes it: say what was verified, reused and not checked.
  6. Red first for every behaviour change (copy aside + git checkout HEAD -- <file>; never git stash).

Rollback

Revert the PRs in reverse order. pt1's redaction changes what browser and test runs show the chat (newly captured values may read [masked]); reverting pt1 restores the earlier display, and saved histories are unaffected either way. The change adds a profile, events, refusal codes and a workspace-storage record of running servers (removed with the run); no stored learner data changes, so saved studies, test replays and Wikis are unaffected. MCP stays 1.8 (additive). The skill moves one version.

Out of scope

  • Saving a server run as a learning replay and a durable server journal (the next feature cycle, O2).
  • Watch mode, HTTPS, WebSockets, streaming responses, several requests per run, authenticated requests (cookies, Authorization).
  • Child-process listeners (fork, cluster): refused this cycle; framework-specific request correlation.
  • Environment-name pass-through, nodeArgs or a native type-stripping loader.
  • P07's Vite web UI and Chrome MV3, P08's Expo app, Pages Router (P01), Node Examples.
  • Native Windows and Ubuntu use.

Later candidates (short list; no defect is held here)

  • Entry and port detection from package.json scripts; several requests per run; authenticated requests.
  • Environment-name pass-through and other loaders (if Part A shows a target needs them, it becomes a new expectation version instead).
  • Third-party server shapes in a spike; a plain chat + debugger baseline measurement.

Owner decisions

  • Standing: the owner's goal (every resource to the product; never spend money or break the law). The owner cannot answer: 「返事ができないので、選択肢はReccomendをpickしてください🙇」, so each decision takes the recommended option, named here.
  • O1 (recommended; contents revised by the Eng review): three PRs, merged in order, each passing its own gate, CI and local reviews.
    • codex/cycle-0057-pt1: Part A record, tasks 5–8 (schema, launcher, listener-tool helper, redaction contract) and pt1's docs.
    • codex/cycle-0057-pt2: tasks 9–12, N57 step 0, and the profile's docs.
    • codex/cycle-0057-pt3: task 13, N57 (task 15), and the skill's docs.
  • O2 (recommended): live only this cycle; save and replay of server runs is the next feature cycle. The run keeps an in-memory capture shaped for it.
  • O3 (owner, 2026-10-27): N57 runs on the pinned P08 clone (laststance/switch-time at 4f68953) in the Space. Development evidence only; AGENTS.md Development target records the exception.
  • O4 (recommended): the configuration declares the entry, port and one request; no command line; Codebook imposes no port.
  • O5: gstack updated itself during this planning; the cycle uses that release.
  • O6 (owner, 2026-10-27): no hosted CodeRabbit from this cycle on (ec412a69).
  • O7 (owner, 2026-10-27): VS Code keeps GPT6 Luna until GPT-6.1 Terra or Luna is listed (ec412a69).
  • /autoplan final gate (2026-10-27, rec under the standing rule): plan approved as reviewed, with these taste decisions taken at their recommendation: keep every bound (TD-1); one redaction contract for every profile, landing in pt1 (TD-2); the debugged process must be the listener (TD-3, ENG-6); timing attribution disclosed with x-codebook-run (TD-5); a native confirmation modal before state-changing requests (TD-6, reversing the earlier skill-sentence-only choice on new evidence); record and reap verified orphans (TD-7).
  • pt2 /ship (2026-10-28, rec under the standing rule): Step 11's Codex structured gate FAIL (three P1) → A) investigate and fix now; D14 v2 (a Stop while the request is under way kills first) taken from Codex adversarial's round-2 P1, noted on the Issue before its code; version 0.2.51.0 (the project's per-PR step); references to Cycle 0057: a Node HTTP server of a real repository is explained live (node-server profile) #139 kept as references, not promoted to closing, since pt3 remains.
  • pt3 /ship (2026-10-28, rec under the standing rule): Step 9 pass 1's four informational findings answered Skip (AGENTS.md feature-cycle rule) and carried. Step 11: Codex adversarial C1 and C2 (a retried stop could signal a process group that reused the id) and Claude adversarial Cycle 0002: validate native runtime control in Cursor and VS Code #3 (a readable process at an exited leader's pid read as launched) taken as Critical → A) fixed in pass 2 (red first); C3 (a pause that arrives during a non-paused stop's detach, outside the request window, is resumed) downgraded to informational by lead judgment (the pause begins after the stop decision, outside the declared request, as the editor's own Stop of an attach session behaves) and carried with C4, S2 and the orphan-folder note; the Codex structured gate passed (P2 only). Version 0.2.52.0.

    Entry (2026-10-27, planning)

    • Reads, from disk after the latest compaction in this session: PRODUCT_GOAL.md in full (goal version 10, all 444 lines); Issue Cycle 0056: every defect Cycle 0055 carried is fixed (Wiki runs, the LLM Wiki view, the reader, test replays in Cursor) #135's body and comments (the previous cycle, closed with nothing carried); Cycle 0055: Codebook's Activity Bar generates, opens and updates the LLM Wiki, re-proven natively in both hosts #132's O2. AGENTS.md is in context as project instructions.
    • Image: docs/designs/assets/codebook-product-spec-v9.png, opened with an image tool: 1024 × 1536, 1,878,402 bytes, SHA-256 f189ee82…caf2aa (matches Design target). Regions: 1 (live), 2 (replay), 3 (DeepWiki) and the shortcut strip. This cycle's increment is region 1's live explanation for a server execution form.
    • State: origin/main 5b992ea5 (v0.2.49.0). Branch codex/cycle-0057 holds:
      • ec412a69 (O6: .coderabbit.yaml auto_review off, AGENTS.md; O7: the VS Code model rule);
      • 57a53a02 (O3: the pinned P08 clone for Node server trials, AGENTS.md Development target).
    • Research:
      • the existing profiles were mapped read-only (repository-browser, node-test: launch, inspector, capture, history, MCP);
      • the targets were read through git only, without touching the owner's checkouts:
        • nsx 502545c7: Express on port 4000, tsx server/index.ts, MySQL;
        • switch-time 4f68953: Hono on PORT (default 4100), tsx watch src/server.ts, Postgres.
    • Plan check: /spec's Codex quality gate scored 7/10 twice. Every ambiguity named in both rounds was folded in before filing: the run states, the start order, port ownership, request bounds, refusal codes, the evidence ladder, and per-PR completeness.
    • Next: /autoplan on this Issue's plan.

/autoplan complete (2026-10-27): plan approved, body revised

The body now holds the approved plan with every accepted review requirement folded into its task (no addenda).

    • Phases: CEO (SELECTIVE EXPANSION; spec review 3 rounds, last score 7/10 with all 20 points applied or dispositioned), Design skipped (no UI scope), DX (POLISH; 5/10 → 7/10), Eng (scope accepted as-is; 40 findings mapped). Each phase ran a native Claude voice and a Codex voice; Codex completed in every phase (DX on attempt 3, Eng on attempt 2: one attempt had unparsed severity tags, one was killed by a macOS update reboot, one was misrecorded because I edited the review script's stderr line).
    • Main changes from the filed plan:
      • N57 proves a database-backed path per host with the chat AI's own declaration as the primary signal, plus a chat-driven smoke before pt2 ships.
      • The lifecycle follows API 1.8 (receipts, same-key replay, request-in-flight, codebook_continue with answer next); execution failures return isError with the run state; 14 new codes get recovery text.
      • Listener ownership is proven at request time on the connected socket; the debugged process must be the listener (fork/cluster children refused); a foreign listener never holds the run slot.
      • Learner pauses are never resumed, including during preparation; owned hits outside the request window are unattributed; pauses carry generations.
      • One redaction contract masks secret names and values for every profile (pt1); a native confirmation precedes state-changing requests; verified orphans are reaped on activation.
      • Part A also records launch fidelity, supported shapes, learning questions and whether breakpoints register before release.
    • Final gate: rec under the owner's standing instruction (「返事ができないので、選択肢はReccomendをpickしてください🙇」): plan approved; taste decisions TD-1, TD-2, TD-3, TD-5, TD-6, TD-7 at their recommendation.
    • Records: the full review record (decision ledger, consensus tables, sections) is private on the Mac: .gstack/tmp/autoplan/review-record.md, sha256 8be8e70338a484f3…. During review the Mac rebooted and /tmp lost the working plan; it was rebuilt from the session transcript and checked byte for byte against the saved snapshots before the review continued.
    • Next: Part A's spike (tasks 1–4) on the Mac.

Entry after compaction (2026-10-27, implementing: Part A spike)

    • Reads, from disk after this compaction: PRODUCT_GOAL.md in full (goal version 10, 444 lines); this Issue's body and its three comments. AGENTS.md is in context as project instructions.

Part A verdict (tasks 1–4, 2026-10-27): launch form S1 holds; Stop gets expectation v2

Evidence level 1: direct CDP from a script, with no product code. This is not product evidence.

    • Host: the Mac (macOS 27.2, arm64), Node 26.10.0, /usr/sbin/lsof.
    • Scripts: the spike script, sha256 39360dd96d9e4bf1…, and the fidelity script, 06288094a74396a9…. Both are in the Mac's ignored .gstack/tmp/c57-spike/.
    • Reports: the Mac's ignored artifacts/cycle-0057/spike/; their hashes are listed at the end.
    • Spike sequence:
      1. Spawn node --inspect-brk=127.0.0.1:0 --import <tsx loader> <entry> with cwd at the package root, in its own process group, with the plan's environment allowlist.
      2. Bind one source-mapped stop.
      3. Release the start pause.
      4. Wait for readiness (127.0.0.1, then ::1).
      5. Check the listener with lsof.
      6. Send one request with node:http (x-codebook-run: spike).
      7. Read locals at the pause and resume.
      8. Observe the response, close the group and check the port.

Task 1: pinned targets and setup burden

    Target Revision Setup (time) Notes
    P08 laststance/switch-time 4f68953 pnpm install --frozen-lockfile (3 s); docker compose up -d db + pnpm db:migrate in apps/api (Postgres 18, 4 s) .env at the repository root from .env.example, with a generated BETTER_AUTH_SECRET.
P07 laststance/nsx 502545c7 pnpm install --frozen-lockfile (13 s); docker compose -f compose.yml -f compose.dev.yml up -d db + pnpm exec prisma migrate deploy (MySQL, 24 s) .env from .env.sample. migrate deploy replaced the plan's migrate dev: it is non-interactive and applies the committed migrations.
    • Node 26.10.0 was installed by mise first (53 s).
    • No target step failed. One failure was mine: a clone loop broke on zsh word splitting.
    • .env keys (values never left the Mac):
      • switch-time: DATABASE_URL, TEST_DATABASE_URL, PORT, APP_ORIGIN, BETTER_AUTH_SECRET;
      • nsx: DATABASE_URL, MYSQL_*, ACCESS_TOKEN_SECRET, REFRESH_TOKEN_SECRET, SENTRY_*, LOG_LEVEL, VITE_*.
    • The owner's checkouts were not touched. Both clones are clean apart from the ignored .env files.

Task 2 (S1): launch and attach

Item switch-time (ESM, Hono) nsx (CommonJS, Express)
    Package root, entry apps/api, src/server.ts ., server/index.ts
Loader realpath <repo>/node_modules/.pnpm/tsx@4.23.15/node_modules/tsx/dist/loader.mjs: pnpm's per-project virtual store, inside the repository <repo>/node_modules/tsx/dist/loader.mjs (tsx 4.23.15), inside the repository
First pause (Break on start) @hono/node-server/dist/constants-*.mjs:1, the first module evaluated after the graph is linked node:internal/modules/esm/module_job:562
Is the first pause in the entry or the loader? Neither Neither
TypeScript breakpoint registered before release PASS. V8's beforeScriptWithSourceMapExecution instrumentation pause stops before app.ts runs; the stop is bound there. A stop on a top-level line (app.ts:54, col 0, the route registration) was hit before readiness and continued (stopsHitAtStart case). PASS for request-time lines. No instrumentation pause matched the CommonJS scripts that tsx's require hook compiles. The stop was bound on Debugger.scriptParsed (238 ms), long before readiness (~805 ms), and the handler runs only on the request. Top-level CommonJS lines are unproven at this level.
Source maps tsx emits each file as one generated line with an inline map. A breakpoint by raw TypeScript line never binds; it needs source-map mapping. pwa-node with sourceMaps: true does that. The level-3 tests' own CDP client must too. Same
    Listener (lsof -nP -iTCP:<port> -sTCP:LISTEN) node <pid> … IPv6 … TCP *:4100 (LISTEN): the IPv6 wildcard, which accepts 127.0.0.1 node <pid> … IPv6 … TCP *:4000 (LISTEN), the same form
Is the listener the launched process? Yes in every run: listener pid = launched pid = pgid Same
fork or cluster None: serve() runs in-process, and apps/api/src has no cluster, child_process or fork( None: app.listen(4000) runs in-process, and server/ has none

    Ready after spawn 0.80–1.06 s 0.80–0.81 s

Launch form: S1. S1b (the tsx CLI) is not needed.

Task 3 (S2): request-driven pauses and observed responses

The same, MySQL stopped The same The same 503 {"checks":{"database":"error"},"error":"Database unreachable",…} after 20.2 s (Prisma's connect timeout), inside REQUEST_TIMEOUT's 30 s with 10 s to spare port free
    • In every run the stop was in the TypeScript source, not in compiled or loader code.
    • The locals were readable with Debugger.evaluateOnCallFrame.
    • The stack named the route's frames: Hono compose/cors, Drizzle's executor, and Express router/lib/layer.js.
    • Failed attempt: s1s2-nsx-health-db-up-try2.json did not bind (no instrumentation pause for CommonJS). This led to the scriptParsed binding above.

Finding: shutdown with a debugger attached → Stop expectation v2

switch-time handles SIGTERM itself (server.ts: server.close(() => process.exit(0))). With an inspector session attached, it does not exit:

    • Node prints Waiting for the debugger to disconnect... and blocks.
    • SIGKILL ended it at 5.0–5.1 s in all four runs.
    • When the spike closed its CDP session first and then sent SIGTERM, the server exited with code 0 in 103 ms (s1s2-switch-time-healthz-detach.json).
    • nsx installs no SIGTERM handler, so it ended at once by signal (≈100 ms).
    • While the target is paused, a signal handler cannot run.

Expectation v2 (task 10 Stop, task 6's fixture close):

    • Stop ends the owned pwa-node session (detach, which resumes the target) before it sends SIGTERM to the group.
    • SIGKILL by 5 s and the 10 s deadline stay as the backstop.
    • The fixture server handles SIGTERM gracefully, so the order is tested.
    • v1 (TERM first) is kept in this record as the falsified order.

    Task 4: launch fidelity

The fidelity script ran each target's own development command and sent the same requests. Reports: fidelity-*-normal-start.json.

Target Normal start Codebook launch Result
switch-time pnpm dev in apps/api = tsx watch src/server.ts node --inspect-brk --import <tsx loader> src/server.ts, cwd apps/api Same responses: healthz 200 {"status":"ok"}; sign-in 401 INVALID_EMAIL_OR_PASSWORD. The app loads ../../.env itself (process.loadEnvFile, apps/api/src/db/env.ts:7), relative to the cwd, so cwd = package root keeps it. NODE_ENV defaults to development in both. Under tsx watch the listener is a grandchild (pnpm → tsx watch → node server, three processes deep). That is why watch mode is refused: the debugged process must be the listener.
nsx pnpm server:start = nodemon → tsx server/index.ts with NODE_ENV=development NODE_ENV unset The same development branch: process.env.NODE_ENV || 'development', port 4000. The same .env: dotenv with path.join(__dirname, '../.env'), independent of the cwd. Same response: health 200 database: ok.

No expectation change from fidelity. The environment allowlist and the unset NODE_ENV reproduce both targets' development behavior on these paths.

Supported shapes (Node server rows of P07 and P08)

    Shape Where This cycle
ESM TypeScript entry through the repository's own tsx; in-process serve(); env from the server's own .env P08 apps/api Fits (proven at level 1)

Watch wrappers (tsx watch, nodemon) The normal dev scripts of both Refused as a launch form. Codebook runs the entry directly (same code path, no restart on change).
Production branches nsx NODE_ENV=production (HTTPS on 443 plus an 80 redirect, certificates); switch-time node dist/server.js (built) Refused or out of scope: ports < 1024, HTTPS, built output

    pt1 result (2026-10-27): merged as 4ff53d2b (PR #140, v0.2.50.0)

Delivered: tasks 5–8 and pt1's docs.

    • Task 5: the node-server declaration and its launch inputs.
    • Task 6: the launcher, with Stop v2's close order.
    • Task 7: the listener tool.
    • Task 8: the redaction contract for every profile.
    • Docs: CHANGELOG 0.2.50.0 and README Masked values.

The server modules are still unexposed: no profile, tool or help offers them yet.

Evidence level: level 3 for the launcher. That is a real-process test against the test-only fixture server, with the test's own CDP client in place of pwa-node; the DAP binding and the pwa-node attach are not claimed. Everything else is unit and host tests. No native editor trial ran; none is owed by pt1.

Exact-HEAD gate on b2b07d10 (tree b64fe053): 15/15 exit 0, tree clean before and after.

    Check Result
pnpm test 7,486 tests: 7,480 pass, 0 fail, 6 skipped
    Reader DOM 288 + 55 + 12 + 8 + 26 cases, all pass
    pnpm test:package 1,081 tests: 1,071 pass, 0 fail, 10 skipped
    pnpm health exit 0 (score 85 A)
    Context-restore test 9/9
    Required CI all pass
Local CodeRabbit CLI r5 on origin/main..b2b07d10 0 findings
Docs audit (attempt 2, read-only) current

Reviews: /ship Step 9 used its three fixing cycles and did not converge (converged:false). Under the owner's ship review limit, every last-round finding was fixed (Step 9 pass 3 and Step 11's 11 adversarial findings). No Critical or Major defect stays open, so no Issue records one.

Found after /ship and fixed before merge:

    1. The launcher test failed under coverage. Node's spawn passes NODE_V8_COVERAGE to children, so the gate's pnpm health and CI shard 13/14 failed. Fixed in d4b12d7b, test only, red then green.
    2. pnpm health scored the anonymous body-rule arrow at CRAP 56. Fallow matched no coverage to it. The rules became a named rule list in 22d6ba33.
    3. CodeRabbit r4 raised three Minor findings, fixed in b2b07d10.
      • The redactor masked a host:port URL that ended the output without a line break; it now releases it. Red first.
      • The packaged README's recovery table now names NODE_SERVER_SOURCE_REFUSED.
    4. Four Reader DOM checks failed locally because the Mac's Playwright cache lacked ffmpeg. This was an environment gap, not a product defect; CI's Reader DOM passed. Installed with playwright-cli install-browser ffmpeg.

    Carried: nothing.

    Next: pt2 (tasks 9–12, N57 step 0).

pt2 expectation notes (2026-10-27, before pt2 code): decisions on the integration survey's open points

Survey and how decisions were taken

    • Before pt2, a read-only survey mapped where node-server plugs into service.ts, protocol.ts, schemas.ts, runtime.ts, environment.ts, resources.ts, errors.ts, extension.ts, studyWorkspace.ts and the existing test harnesses. The map is in the Mac's ignored .gstack/tmp/c57-pt2/integration-map.md.
    • It found 13 points the plan leaves open. The owner cannot answer, so each takes its recommended option.
    • These are expectation notes (v2 where they refine a task), not new scope.

    Run errors, deadline and retention

    • D1, run error vs request outcome (task 10).
      • These set the run's error and end the run as today: a preparation failure, SERVER_EXITED, PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED and RUNTIME_FAILED.
      • A request failure (REQUEST_FAILED, REQUEST_TIMEOUT) is the request's outcome. It shows as state request-failed and as the run's error field, but never as the run's terminal reason. The extension's maintenance loop therefore does not stop the server; responded and request-failed end the request, not the server.
      • An owned hit after the request ended reads unattributed, under learner-pause rules.
    • D2, deadline (TD-1). The repository run deadline (600 s) applies to node-server like the other profiles. It caps the request's 15-minute wall-time backstop. The help names it among the limits.
    • D3, retention. A server run holds no history: it is marked excluded at start (server-run-not-saved). It is evictable, offers no read-history, and never reads as saved.

    Admission, confirmation and stops

    • D4, MCP validation. The MCP SDK validates inputSchema before the handler. So the node-server member of the MCP start schema accepts any configuration object, and start parses it strictly. INVALID_CONFIGURATION then lists every violation with codebook://help/node-server, as task 5 requires.
    • D5, admission order (task 9).
      • Admission stays synchronous: profile, then schema, then BUSY, then the run slot.
      • Workspace trust is the first step of the asynchronous preparation (PREREQUISITE_MISSING as the run's error).
      • Nothing is spawned before trust, BUSY, schema, realpaths, loader and port pass. That is the plan's intent.
    • D6, confirmation modal (TD-6).
      • codebook_action http-request for POST, PUT, PATCH or DELETE awaits the native modal before it answers.
      • Send returns the receipt.
      • Cancel, or no answer within the pause-hold bound (300 s), answers REQUEST_NOT_CONFIRMED. The state stays ready and the key is not consumed, so a retry asks again.
      • A GET returns its receipt at once.
    • D7, stops. Every declared stop (source plus additionalStops, at most 8) is armed before release. Tests cover two stops in one file and retiring them all when the request ends.
    • D9, failed stop. After a failed stop, the state reads stopping until a retry succeeds. The second failure's message names the pid.
    • D12, cited sources. node-server applies the same cited-source document check (SOURCE_CHANGED) as the other profiles.
    • D13, explaining a stop. Server stops are explained in the chat, as test stops are. codebook_explain and codebook_reveal refuse them as they refuse node-test stops (snapshot()), and the native debugger shows the stop's source and values.

    Status, output and status item

    • D8, status preflight. codebook_status lists the machine prerequisites of node-server: Node, a listener tool, ps and a supported platform. The tsx loader depends on the configuration and is checked at start (NODE_SERVER_SOURCE_REFUSED); the status text says so.
    • D10, Output. The request, response and failure entries are plain Output › Codebook lines naming the run id. The diagnostic format stays for failures only.
    • D11, status item (task 12). It is one item with combined text: <state> · Learning replay is not available for server runs yet. Its tooltip adds that server runs are not saved.

    pt2 expectation note D14 (2026-10-28, refines task 10's Stop v2 and PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED)

D14: stopping a server that is paused inside the request never lets the paused code run on.

    • The conflict: Stop v2 detaches the debugger before SIGTERM, and detaching resumes the target. When the server is paused in the request, the handler would run on, for example to its database write, before SIGTERM reaches it. That contradicts "PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED … resumes nothing", and it would surprise a learner who stops at a stop.
    • The rule:
      • While the server is paused at a declared stop or a learner pause inside the request window, a stop or an expired pause hold ends the process group with SIGKILL first, then ends the debug session.
      • Otherwise Stop v2 applies (detach, SIGTERM, SIGKILL after 5 s).
    • Unchanged: both paths share the stop's one 10 s deadline. The recovery text of PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED already says the paused code is not resumed.
    • The contract: 447c87f7 on codex/cycle-0057-pt2 holds the base the pt2 parts build on: the 13 new codes with their recovery, NODE_SERVER_PROFILE/NODE_SERVER_ACTION, NodeServerView/NodeServerRuntime and the environment hooks. pt2 is built in three parallel parts, then integrated on codex/cycle-0057-pt2:
      • U: request sender, readiness, listener ownership, orphan records;
      • R: the run class;
      • S: service, MCP, help and status item.

    Entry after compaction (2026-10-28, implementing: pt2 /ship Step 11)

    • Reads, from disk after this compaction: PRODUCT_GOAL.md in full (goal version 10, 444 lines); this Issue's body and its ten comments. AGENTS.md is in context as project instructions.

    • Issue state: PR v0.2.50.0 feat: credentials in captured values and output read [masked] before the chat or a saved history sees them (Cycle 0057 pt1) #140's merge closed this Issue automatically on 2026-10-27; pt2 and pt3 are still open, so it was reopened.
    • State: branch codex/cycle-0057-pt2 at cdc2736b, not pushed; one untracked test file (nodeServerPureUnits.test.ts, /ship Step 7's coverage tests, committed in Step 15); origin/main 4ff53d2b. /ship Step 9 pass 1 finished with no Critical finding (binding verified). Next: Step 11's adversarial review, then the version bump to 0.2.51.0, CHANGELOG, the docs audit, commit, push and the PR.

pt2 expectation note D14 v2 (2026-10-28, before the fix): a Stop while the request is under way kills the server first

Why: /ship pt2 Step 11, round 2, Codex adversarial (P1). D14 v1 decides kill-first from the pauses the run knows of. A handler that reaches a breakpoint or debugger; after the Stop was admitted, but before the detach completes, is resumed by the detach, so its database write can run after the Stop. No bookkeeping of pause notifications can close that gap, because the notification can arrive after the decision.

    D14 v2:

    • A Stop admitted while the declared request is under way (sent, and not answered or failed) ends the process group with SIGKILL first, then ends the debug session, whether or not a pause was reported. Code after the Stop never runs.
    • The same applies, as in v1, to a server paused at a declared stop (inside the request or outside it), to an expired pause hold, and to a stop the editor reported but the run has not classified yet.
    • Otherwise Stop v2 applies (detach, SIGTERM, SIGKILL after 5 s): a ready or answered server, and a learner pause outside the request window.
    • A Stop admitted before the request's first byte sends nothing. Once the request has been handed to the socket, it counts as sent.

Unchanged: the one 10 s stop deadline; PAUSE_HOLD_EXPIRED resumes nothing. Supersedes: D14 v1's condition "paused inside the request window" (v1 is kept here as the earlier version).

    pt2 result (2026-10-28): merged as 6ce0908e (PR #141, v0.2.51.0)

Delivered: tasks 9–12 and pt2's docs.

    • Task 9: the run.
    • Task 10: the MCP lifecycle and the state × call table.
    • Task 11: recovery text and codebook://help/node-server.
    • Task 12: the status item.
    • Docs: CHANGELOG 0.2.51.0, the packaged README section Explain a Node HTTP server, the root README status.

The node-server profile is offered through MCP. The bundled skill's route comes in pt3.

    Evidence levels

    • Level 2: host tests.
    • Level 3: real-process fixture tests (CI), plus AC 2(c) on the pinned clones (the Mac, local only). 4/4 on the final code b40af1e7; the later commits change docs, version lines and tests only.
    • Native development evidence: N57 step 0 PASS in the Space's VS Code, re-smoked on the final VSIX (below). It earns no final-row credit.

Exact-HEAD gate on 3f1473fb (tree 542ef587): 15/15 exit 0, tree clean before and after.

    Check Result
pnpm test 7,808 tests: 7,798 pass, 0 fail, 10 skipped
    Reader DOM 288 + 55 + 12 + 8 + 26 cases, all pass
    pnpm test:package 1,081 tests: 1,071 pass, 0 fail, 10 skipped
    pnpm health exit 0 (score 86 A)
    Context-restore test 9/9
Required CI 23 pass, 2 skipped (hosted CodeRabbit off by O6; the main-only split-files job)
Local CodeRabbit CLI on origin/main..3f1473fb completed; minor findings only, carried (tasks 31–35)

Reviews: /ship Step 9 used three passes under review_scope frozen and did not converge (converged:false).

    • Step 11's first round: Codex structured found three P1 findings, fixed in 8257e534:
      • a Stop during the peer check could still write the request;
      • kill-first missed an unclassified pause;
      • a dialog left by another run could answer this run.
    • Pass 3 was capped with four untested kill-first cells.
    • Step 11's second round brought Codex adversarial's P1: a pause arriving during the detach would be resumed by it. That led to D14 v2, noted here before its code.
    • Under the owner's ship review limit, every last-round finding was fixed in 0f008416 (11 red-first tests). No Critical or Major defect stays open, so no Issue records one.

Found after /ship and fixed before merge: the first gate run on c6641821 failed only pnpm health: refusalText (assertNodeServerPortFree.ts) scored CRAP 72 with no test reaching it. 3f1473fb adds seven tests; no product code changed.

Question a new natural one: sign-in with an unregistered e-mail address
    Result PASS

The run went through these stages:

    1. The chat declared the run on its first attempt: two stops, the route and the SQL execution.
    2. Codebook's native dialog read "Send POST /api/auth/sign-in/email … for run c7bd6817 …". The learner chose Send.
    3. The server paused at apps/api/src/app.ts:65, "Paused at stop 1 of 2".
    4. It paused at apps/api/src/db/client.ts:254, "Paused at stop 2 of 2", with the SQL parameter readable.
    5. The response was 500. The target's own 25 s request deadline passed while it was paused. The chat said so, as observed, and sent nothing more.
    6. The stop freed port 4100 and left no process.
    7. The final answer separated what was observed from what was derived from Better Auth's source (the 401 path).

pt3 start (2026-10-28) and expectation note D14 v3 (task 27, before its code)

State: branch codex/cycle-0057-pt3 from main 6ce0908e (v0.2.51.0, PR #141). pt3 = task 13 (the skill's server route, 1.0.51) with tasks 16–35, then task 15 (N57 in both editors) and pt3's docs. The work runs in three parts on QA-owned worktrees, then is integrated on codex/cycle-0057-pt3:

    • A: the run, debugger and launcher (tasks 18, 23, 25, 27, 28, 32).
    • B: utilities and the dialog (tasks 20, 21, 22, 24, 26, 29, 34).
    • C: the skill, help and docs (task 13 with 16, 17, 30; tasks 19, 31, 33, 35).

    D14 v3 (refines D14 v2 for task 27).

    • Why: Codebook never resumes a pause it does not own (task 9: the learner's pause is never resumed). Under v2, a Stop while the learner is paused outside the request detaches first, and the detach resumes the learner's paused code before SIGTERM.
    • Rule:
      • A Stop ends the process group with SIGKILL first, then ends the debug session, whenever the server is paused in the debugger: a declared stop, the learner's own pause, or a stop not classified yet.
      • The same applies while the request is under way (v2) and when a pause hold expired.
      • Otherwise (a ready or answered server that is not paused) Stop v2 applies: detach, SIGTERM, SIGKILL after the grace.
    • Trade-off: a paused server's own SIGTERM handler does not run; it could not run while paused anyway.
    • Supersedes: v2's exception for a learner pause outside the request window. v1 and v2 stay in this record as earlier versions.

    N57 frozen before execution (task 15, pt3)

Where: the Space local:codebook-qa (macOS 26 VM). Target: the pinned P08 clone /Users/lume/qa/c57/switch-time at 4f68953 (O3; development evidence only, no final-row credit). Local stack: Postgres 18 by Homebrew on 127.0.0.1:5432, migrated. .env keys only are recorded, never values.

Candidate: pt3's final VSIX (its hash is recorded at the run), installed normally in each editor. The skill is the bundled 1.0.51; its loaded identity is checked per host (VS Code: the extension's chatSkills; Cursor: ~/.cursor/skills/codebook/SKILL.md after Codebook: Set Up AI Chat).

Chats: VS Code Copilot Chat, Agent, Local session, GPT-6.1 Terra (GPT-6.1 Luna if the picker lists it after searching 6.1 and luna). Cursor Agent, Grok 4.6 High (Fast on allowed).

Per-host paths and natural questions (different database-backed paths; no stops, values or configuration are given to the chat):

Host Question (asked once, as written) Path the question concerns Causal links the explanation must show Values to observe
VS Code 「新規登録したとき、ユーザーとセッションはどういう順番でデータベースに作られるの? このリポジトリのAPIサーバーを Codebook で実際に動かして、1回だけ登録リクエストを送って確かめながら説明して。」 POST /api/auth/sign-up/email (writes to the local database) the route hands the request to the auth handler; the handler validates and creates the user; the database statements run under the request's deadline; the response is what the run observed a statement or parameter at a database stop; the observed status
Cursor 「登録されていないメールアドレスでサインインしたら、APIはどこでユーザーを探して、どんな失敗を返すの? 実際にサーバーを動かして確かめて。」 POST /api/auth/sign-in/email with an unregistered address the route hands the request to the auth handler; the user lookup statement runs with the e-mail as its parameter; the failure answer the e-mail parameter at the lookup; the observed status

    Pass (per host):

    • primary signal: the chat's own declaration starts without human edits (attempts counted, ≤2);
    • the run pauses at a declared stop in the repository's TypeScript source with values in the native debugger;
    • the explanation covers the frozen links;
    • the response is reported as observed: either the path's own answer, or a 500 from the app's own 25 s request deadline (REQUEST_DEADLINE_MS, which keeps running while the server is paused), labeled as such by the chat;
    • the native dialog appears for the POST and only the learner's Send sends it;
    • Stop frees the port and leaves no process;
    • the first explanation at a pause within 5 minutes of the question (manual tool approvals counted apart).

Also, once, in VS Code: with Postgres stopped, one natural question about the same sign-in path. The chat must report the failure truthfully, with no source-only answer, and the run must free the port.

Recording: OBS Window Capture of the editor window in the Space, preflight per AGENTS.md Native QA; frames extracted and inspected; recordings stay private on the Mac with SHA-256 here.

VS Code: sign-up (POST /api/auth/sign-up/email, writes to the local database). PASS.

    The chat's run, in order:

    1. It confirmed that node-server is available.
    2. It said that the POST writes to the configured database and needs the learner's approval in the editor dialog (the 1.0.51 route).
    3. It did not open the Study workspace (task 16).
    4. It chose one stop because the app's request deadline keeps running while paused (task 30).
    5. The start was accepted on its first declaration. VS Code's tool summary read "Start the declared Codebook run (sends no request)" (task 19).
    6. Codebook's dialog read: "Send POST /api/auth/sign-up/email … for run 04f6f54f … The request body is 128 bytes of application/json …" (task 22). The learner chose Send.
    7. The run paused at apps/api/src/db/seed-user.ts:19 (seedUser in the user-create hook, in a transaction), "Paused at stop 1 of 1", with values in the native debugger.
    8. The chat explained that the created user's id reached seedUser.
    9. Continue → Responded 500 (DeadlineError: deadline passed before commit). The chat labeled it: the app's 25 s deadline ran out during the pause, so this is not the normal registration result.
    10. Stop freed port 4100 and left no process.
    11. The final answer: sign-up creates the user, not the session (autoSignIn: false; the session comes at the later sign-in, auth.ts:57). It separated observed facts from what remained unconfirmed.

The first explanation at a pause came about 3.5 min after the question.

Cursor: sign-in with an unregistered address (POST /api/auth/sign-in/email). PASS.

The first run's start was accepted on its first declaration, with three stops. The dialog named run a03218ac and the body as 82 bytes of application/json; the learner chose Send.

    • Stop 1, app.ts:66: c.req.path = '/api/auth/sign-in/email'.
    • Stop 2, Better Auth's before-hook: ctx.body.email = 'nobody-unregistered@example.com'.
    • Stop 3, db/client.ts:254: the "user" lookup by email = $1.
    • Then 500. The chat labeled it as the app's deadline expiring during the stops, not the normal failure, and stopped the server.

The chat then ran two deliberate new runs, each confirmed by the learner in its own dialog (runs e1e713d8 and 523e1bb6):

    • The second run had one stop, at the SQL, with values = ['nobody-unregistered@…']. It was again 500 after the pause, and the chat said so.
    • The third run stopped after the handler (app.ts:46), so the lookup completed. The observed answer: 401 {"message":"Invalid email or password","code":"INVALID_EMAIL_OR_PASSWORD"}. Better Auth logged "User not found".

Every stop freed the port. The final answer explained why the 500s were not the normal answer, and that server runs are not saved as replays. The first explanation at a pause came about 3.5 min after the question.

VS Code with Postgres stopped (truthful failure). PASS, with one observation. The question was a natural one about how sign-in queries the user.

    • The run paused at client.ts:254 with the SQL.
    • Continue gave 500. The chat reported the 500, said that the query's completion and the user's existence were unconfirmed, gave no source-only answer, and stopped the run (port freed).
    • Observation O-1: the chat did not name the database outage. The run's output carried the connection error (AggregateError), but the chat hedged that the pause might matter. Next cycle: the skill should tell the chat to read the run's output and failure cause before it attributes a failure.

    Other observations

    • O-2 (task 18, evidence recorded): VS Code still reveals node_modules/…/constants-*.mjs at the --inspect-brk entry pause. No attach option avoids it (part A's evidence: js-debug's only auto-resume is continueOnAttach, which would run code before the stops are armed; DebugSessionOptions has no reveal control).
    • O-3 (recorder limit): OBS Window Capture does not show the Command Palette overlay or native modal dialogs, so dialogs are captured as stills. A sidebar toggle proves the window stream (preflight in both editors).
    • O-4: the full test lane on the integrated tree had one timing flake in llmWikiView.test.js ("the message changes only when the tree reads the new rows…"). It passes 3/3 alone and is unrelated to pt3; it is carried.

Evidence (the Mac's ignored artifacts/cycle-0057/n57/, SHA256SUMS in each folder)

The stills (dialogs, pauses, answers) are in n57-vscode/, n57-vscode-dbdown/ and n57-cursor/. Inspected frames: VS Code t=182/240/292 s, Cursor t=200/245/560 s. Cycle 0057 closing (2026-10-28): outcome demonstrated, three pull requests merged

Outcome: demonstrated. The standard chat explains how a real repository's own Node HTTP server handles a request, with the server running. In VS Code (Copilot Chat, GPT-6.1 Terra) and Cursor (Agent, Grok 4.6 High), /codebook with a natural question started the repository's server under Codebook, sent one declared request after the learner confirmed it in Codebook's dialog, paused in the TypeScript handler with values in the native debugger, reported the response as observed and stopped the server (the N57 result comment above). This is development evidence on the pinned P08 clone (laststance/switch-time, O3); it earns no final-row credit.

    Delivery

    Part Pull request Squash Version
pt1: redaction contract, the profile's declaration, launcher and listener tool #140 4ff53d2b 0.2.50.0
pt2: the node-server profile through MCP, its help, codes and status item #141 6ce0908e 0.2.51.0
    pt3: skill 1.0.51's server route, stopping and display fixes, N57 #142 333c7813 0.2.52.0

pt3's checks: the 15-check exact-HEAD gate passed on 3afe07d7 (tests 7,895: 7,885 pass, 0 fail; package tests 1,081: 1,071 pass, 0 fail; health 86 A), required CI passed, the pinned-clone real-process tests passed 4/4 on the final head, and the local CodeRabbit CLI completed on the final range. /ship reached its review cap with converged:false; under the owner's ship review limit every last-round finding was fixed before merge, and no Critical or Major defect from the /ship rounds stays open, so no Issue records one. A VS Code smoke on pt3's final package passed (a new natural question; the chat labeled a 500 from the application's own deadline as not the normal answer).

Gap rows changed by this cycle (the rest keep the baseline audit above)

    • AC-LIVE: match, narrow: repository-browser, node-test and now node-server (Node HTTP server, one unauthenticated request per run). Proof: N57 in both editors on macOS (development target).
    • AC-SKILL: skill 1.0.51 routes server and API questions; proof N57 (loaded identity checked in both editors).
    • AC-SAVE / AC-REPLAY for server runs: not available yet (truthful status item); the next feature cycle (O2).
    • AC-REAL-PROJECTS: the P08 Node server form has development evidence; P07's Express server has real-process (level 3) evidence only, and its native trial was not run. Still missing: Chrome MV3 (P06, P07), the Vite and Expo web UIs, Pages Router (P01), Node Examples, server-run save and replay.

Carried defects (each becomes a task of the next bug-fix cycle; source in brackets)

    1. The launcher's close records killed: true before its second identity check, so a close that left a replaced group alone still says it killed [pt3 /ship pass 1, maintainability; local CodeRabbit CLI].
    2. The shown body's … n more bytes count subtracts a cut taken on the redacted text from the original length (it can even go negative), and the straddling test pins the mixed value [pass 1 core; CodeRabbit CLI].
    3. The group identity check: without a recorded launch start time the folder alone identifies the leader, and with no start time readable at launch or now a matching folder reads unverifiable [pass 1 red team; CodeRabbit CLI].
    4. A pause that arrives after a non-paused stop began its detach (outside the request window) is resumed by the detach and runs until SIGTERM; the run reads its kill-first decision once and the VS Code debugger reports no pause after its release began [Step 11 Codex adversarial (High, downgraded by lead judgment) and Claude adversarial].
    5. A retried close runs its identity check after the 5 s kill bound was spent, so SIGKILL can land later than 5 s [Step 11 Codex adversarial].
    6. The orphan sweep keeps an orphan whose start matches but whose folder changed or could not be read, never signals it and never ages the record out [Step 11 Claude adversarial].
    7. codebook_action's description says a GET changes nothing, though a handler may still change data, and its protocol test pins that sentence [CodeRabbit CLI].
    8. An exception from the response sanitizer would leave the request's response unsettled [CodeRabbit CLI].
    9. A continue while the run is stopping with a held learner pause answers LEARNER_PAUSED instead of STALE_PAUSE [CodeRabbit CLI].
    10. The help says REQUEST_TIMEOUT counts running time only while a 15-minute wall-time limit exists, and the packaged README and the 0.2.52.0 entry name that 15-minute limit although the run's 10-minute deadline ends the run first [CodeRabbit CLI].
    11. Test hygiene: the launcher test's SIGTERM upper bound can fail on a slow event loop; the launcher fixture registers no server cleanup when a later step fails; the journal-bounds test computes its expected byte count; two reused test helpers have no @example [CodeRabbit CLI].
    12. With the database stopped, the chat reported the failure truthfully but did not name the outage although the run's output carried the connection error; the skill should tell the chat to read the run's output and failure cause before it attributes a failure [N57 O-1].
    13. llmWikiView.test.js ("the message changes only when the tree reads the new rows…") fails now and then under the full suite's load; it passes alone and in CI [N57 O-4; first gate run on edf4a33b].

Not run: the Express (P07) native trial; a Cursor smoke on pt3's final package (N57 ran in Cursor on a0481750).

Next cycle: a bug-fix cycle that fixes the 13 carried defects above, each with a test that fails without its fix (/spec writes its Issue from this comment). The next feature candidate after it is O2: saving a server run as a learning replay.
