feat(backend-contract): optional font-aware text draw so a font can reach the backend - #76
Conversation
…each the backend (#75) `drawText` is a REQUIRED decl of the draw sub-surface and takes no font, so a `FontId` could be loaded, stamped on a text entity by `Game.setTextFont` (labelle-engine#845) and carried through labelle-gfx's retained text table (gfx#348/#349) — and then had to be DROPPED at the backend call. No backend could receive it. Text always rendered in the backend's built-in font. Adds the missing seam, modelled on the existing optional decls rather than a new pattern: * `Backend(Impl).drawTextWithFont(text, x, y, size, tint, font: ?FontHandle)` — OPTIONAL and `@hasDecl`-gated exactly like `drawTextureProMaterial` / `drawMesh` / `uploadTextureFiltered`. The wrapper is total: a backend that omits it degrades to the required `drawText`, so it is never rejected. * `FontHandle` — the opaque `u32` the seam transports (the `RenderTargetId` straight-through convention; `null`, not `0`, spells "no font"). * `hasFontAwareText(Impl)` — whole-seam capability gate, mirroring `hasTextureFilterSeam` / `hasRenderTargetSubSurface`. * conformance: both `null` and a handle are driven through the wrapper, and the gate is asserted to agree with the decl it gates on. * `MockBackend` opts in and records the handle, so renderer tests can assert the font actually arrived. `font` is an optional whose `null` means "built-in font" — the same shape as `Gui.labelWidgetWithFont`'s `?FontId`, and what `Game.fontId` returns while a lazily-declared font is still baking. `null` is forwarded rather than short-circuited so a backend owns that fallback in one place. `DRAW_CONTRACT_VERSION` does NOT bump: the decl is absent from `draw_fn_decls`, `drawText`'s signature is untouched and no `extern` layout changes, so every existing backend satisfies the required set unchanged — the rule already stated in the versioning block and applied to `drawMesh` / `drawTextureProMaterial` / `uploadTextureFiltered`. A test pins that. Nothing changes on screen until a backend implements the decl; that is a separate decision and is deliberately not done here. Tests: 204 -> 209. 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Normalize the reserved zero handle before forwarding.
Line 1169 forwards 0 to a font-aware backend. A backend without the seam instead uses plain drawText. This gives the reserved value different behavior by backend. Convert 0 to null before dispatch so null remains the only built-in-font request.

Avoid passing an unallocated font handle in conformance
runRenderSuite is intended to run against real downstream backends, but this call passes the literal handle 1 without first loading or registering a corresponding font. Because FontHandle is opaque and implementations may use it to index an atlas table, a conformant backend that validates or dereferences handles can panic or access invalid state here. Use a backend-provided valid font fixture/handle, or limit the generic suite to the null path when no valid handle can be obtained.

One feature since v1.29.0, so a minor bump: * #75/#76 — an optional `drawTextWithFont(text, x, y, size, tint, font: ?FontHandle)` draw decl, plus `FontHandle` and `hasFontAwareText`. `drawText` is a REQUIRED decl whose signature carries no font, so no backend could receive one on the retained text path — labelle-gfx's `drawTextEntry` dropped `TextVisual.font` on the floor. Modelled on the existing optional `drawTextureProMaterial` and on `Gui.labelWidgetWithFont`, with null meaning "the backend's built-in font", matching `Game.fontId`'s null-while-baking contract. `DRAW_CONTRACT_VERSION` deliberately stays 1: the decl is absent from `draw_fn_decls`, `drawText`'s signature is untouched, and no extern layout changed — so no existing backend's required set moves. A test pins that. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5 (1M context) <noreply@anthropic.com> Claude-Session: https://claude.ai/code/session_01CYhdJXRpcTYK7fDyD5vVne
Closes #75.
What was broken, end to end
A game could load a font and get an id for it,
Game.setTextFont(labelle-engine v2.15.0, engine#845) could stamp that id on a text entity, labelle-gfx#348/#349 could carry it throughtoVisualinto the retained text table — and the glyphs never changed. The last link was missing:drawTextis a REQUIRED decl of this repo's draw sub-surface and its signature carries no font, so labelle-gfx'sdrawTextEntryhad to drop the id at the backend call. No backend could receive a font on the retained text path at all (labelle-sokol/src/gfx/font_atlas.zig:277matches the fontless signature exactly). Every text entity rendered in the backend's built-in font. The GUI half of the toolkit already had the answer —
Gui.labelWidgetWithFontis an optional,@hasDecl-guarded, font-aware label draw taking?FontId(null = built-in font), used by engine'sgui_mixin. The retained/entity text path had no equivalent. This adds it.What this adds
Backend(Impl).drawTextWithFont(text, x, y, size, tint, font: ?FontHandle)— OPTIONAL and@hasDecl-gated, registered exactly the waydrawTextureProMaterial/drawMesh/uploadTextureFilteredare. The wrapper is total: a backend that omits the decl degrades to the requireddrawText, so it is not rejected and nothing about it changes.FontHandle— the opaque handle the seam transports. Plainu32, the same straight-through convention asRenderTargetId;null, not0, spells "no font", so the built-in-font fallback has one unambiguous shape at every layer. Deliberately not a distinct enum likeTextureId/BackendTextureId: there is no core-owned font registry to resolve through, the numbering space belongs to whoever minted the id, and this contract only transports it.hasFontAwareText(Impl)— whole-seam capability gate, mirroringhasTextureFilterSeam/hasRenderTargetSubSurface.null— a font still baking — and a handle) and asserts the gate agrees with the decl it gates on.MockBackendopts into the seam and records the handle, so a renderer test can assert the font actually arrived. Why
fontis optionalGame.fontIdreturnsnullwhile a lazily-declared font is still baking — the not-ready contract documented onatlas_mixin.fontId.nulltherefore means "render the built-in font this frame", the same shapelabelWidgetWithFontalready takes. The wrapper forwardsnullrather than short-circuiting it, so a backend owns that fallback in one place.Version bump: none, deliberately
DRAW_CONTRACT_VERSIONstays at 1. The decl is an ADDITION toBackend(Impl): it is absent fromdraw_fn_decls,drawText's signature is untouched, and noexternvalue-type layout changes — so every existing backend still satisfies the required set unchanged and no assembler-sideN == Massert can start failing. That is the rule the versioning block already states ("optional additions are non-breaking") and the same call made fordrawMesh, drawTextureProMaterialanduploadTextureFiltered. A test pins both facts (drawTextWithFontnot indraw_fn_decls; version still 1).Nothing changes on screen yet
This removes the reason a font cannot reach a backend. A backend must still implement
drawTextWithFontfor anything to look different — that is a separate decision and is deliberately not done in any backend repo here. labelle-gfx's side of the link is a companion PR (gfxfeat/font-aware-text-draw, stacked on gfx#349).Tests
204 → 209, each failing without the change (the wrapper tests don't compile without the decl; the degrade test counts the plain
drawTextcalls a decl-less backend receives):missingBackendDeclsempty), the decl is not indraw_fn_decls, andDRAW_CONTRACT_VERSION == 1;drawText(both a handle andnull);nullis forwarded, not swallowed, and matches what a plaindrawTextrecords;FontHandleis the straight-through opaque handle shape.zig build, zig build test(209/209) andzig fmt --checkare green.Need help on this PR?
