ci: make test-materials actually run the material tests (#741) - #743
Conversation
`zig build test-materials` selected its tests with a `--test-filter` over
`src/root.zig`:
.filters = &.{ "material_schema", "material_pipeline", "component_collisions" }
and ran ZERO material tests. Zig discovers a file's `test` decls only once
the file is analyzed; with `--test-filter` active, every NAMED test in
`root.zig` is dropped and only the anonymous `test { _ = @import(...) }`
discovery blocks survive (`*.test_0` — those are never filtered). None of
those blocks names a material module, so `material_pipeline.zig` was never
analyzed and its tests never existed to be matched. No filter string fixed
it: even `--test-filter "materials build emission"`, the literal name of a
`material_pipeline` test, still ran the same nine assertion-free `test_0`
blocks.
Proof (force-failing `material_pipeline`'s "materials build emission" test
on this tree, before the fix):
zig build test-materials -> exit 0, "127/127 tests passed"
zig build test -> exit 1, "2915/2929 passed (2 failed)"
A named step that excludes the module it is named for is worse than no
step, so the filter is gone. `test-materials` now compiles an explicit root,
`src/material_test_root.zig`, which imports the material modules by name —
a module either is imported or it is not, and that cannot drift the way a
name filter can. `assertMaterialTestRootCoverage` in `build.zig` fails the
build at CONFIGURE time (before any test compiles) if a `src/material_*.zig`
exists that the root does not import, so the exclusion cannot silently
recur.
After:
zig build test-materials -> 448 tests (was 9 empty import blocks)
with the same probe re-applied -> exit 1, "443 pass, 4 skip, 1 fail"
zig build test -> 3352/3368 passed (16 skipped), exit 0
(was 2917/2929 — the delta is the 439
material tests that now actually run)
The step and the full suite share ONE run artifact, so their material test
counts cannot disagree.

Validate active imports rather than matching comments
If a material import is commented out while its coverage-list entry remains, this raw substring search still finds // _ = @import("material_pipeline.zig");, so the configure-time guard passes even though test-materials no longer analyzes that module. This defeats the drift protection introduced here; restrict the check to active imports in the test block or derive the coverage declaration structurally.

Fixed in 18490e5 — TOKENIZED, not structural.
The structural option was tried first and does not compile on Zig 0.16:
inline for (covered_material_modules) |m| _ = @import(m);
error: @import operand must be a string literal
So the two declarations stay and are cross-checked. The scan moved out of build.zig into src/material_root_scan.zig (so it has unit tests of its own, run by test-materials itself) and uses std.zig.Tokenizer, which emits no tokens for comments. Only @import calls inside a top-level test { … } block count — those are the ones the test binary is guaranteed to analyze.
Your exact scenario, zig build exit codes checked separately:
| tree | _ = @import("material_pipeline.zig"); commented out, list entry kept |
|---|---|
| pre-fix | exit 0 — guard green, module gone from the step |
| post-fix | exit 1 — src/material_pipeline.zig is not imported by src/material_test_root.zig … A COMMENTED-OUT import does not count — the guard tokenizes. |
The guard still fires for a genuinely missing module (throwaway src/material_guardprobe.zig, exit 1), and two new directions are covered: an import that appears only inside a string literal (exit 1) and a covered_material_modules entry naming a module that no longer exists (exit 1).
zig build test --summary all: 3357/3373, exit 0 (+5 scan tests). Force-failing one takes test-materials to 448 pass / 1 fail, exit 1.

… comment (#743 review) The configure-time guard compared `src/material_test_root.zig`'s source against `_ = @import("material_pipeline.zig");` with `std.mem.indexOf`. A substring search matches inside COMMENTS, so commenting the import out while leaving its `covered_material_modules` entry in place kept the guard green while the module dropped out of `zig build test-materials` — the exact drift the guard exists to stop. Demonstrated on the pre-fix build: with that one line commented out, `zig build` exited 0. The structural option the review preferred — one list, no separate import lines, `inline for (covered_material_modules) |m| _ = @import(m);` — does not compile on Zig 0.16 (`error: @import operand must be a string literal`), so the two declarations stay and are cross-checked. The scan is now TOKENIZED: `std.zig.Tokenizer` emits no tokens for comments, and only `@import` calls inside a top-level `test { … }` block count, since those are the ones the test binary is guaranteed to analyze. The scan moved out of build.zig into `src/material_root_scan.zig` so it has unit tests of its own — run by `test-materials` itself, which the guard then requires to cover it. The guard also now checks the other direction: a `covered_material_modules` entry naming a module that no longer exists, or one that is listed but not imported, claims coverage the step does not have. Controls (`zig build`, exit codes checked separately): * import commented out, entry kept: pre-fix exit 0, post-fix exit 1 * throwaway `src/material_guardprobe.zig`: exit 1 (unchanged) * import present only inside a string literal: exit 1 (new) * stale list entry `material_ghost.zig`: exit 1 (new) `zig build test --summary all`: 3357 pass / 3373 total, exit 0 (was 3352/3368 — +5, the new scan tests). Force-failing one of them takes `test-materials` to 448 pass / 1 fail, exit 1. Both review threads addressed in 18490e5 (same defect, one fix). The guard is now tokenized, not structural. The structural option was tried first and does not compile on Zig 0.16: So the list and the imports stay two declarations, cross-checked. The scan uses It moved out of Controls (
