Closes #1871 — AI-4285

What & why

The daemon decides at startup which agents it can host, so an agent installed later never showed up, and re-running setup left a running daemon alone. The daemon now checks for an agent CLI it was missing and restarts itself once no agents are running. Its service unit's PATH is frozen at install, so setup also gives the unit its current PATH when that finds an agent CLI the unit's misses, then reloads the daemon (launchd, keeping agents for resume) or asks it to restart when idle (systemd).

Where to look

A unit file must never carry a PATH the loaded daemon lacks: the next setup run compares against the file and would skip the fix. So every launchd and systemd path that does not end in a reload restores the previous unit, under the service lock. Windows units are not rewritten.

Verification

  • RestartCoordinatorTests 26/26, LaunchdUnitRefreshTests 34/34, SystemdServiceManagerTests 7/7, SystemdUnitTests 11/11, ServicePathTests 4/4, SetupDaemonServiceTests 18/18
  • dotnet publish -c Release for CLI and daemon: no IL2026/IL3050
  • Not yet run against a real launchd service

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The daemon can detect newly installed coding-agent tools on its search path and restart when no agents are running so it can use them. Manually started daemons may need to be restarted.
    • Rerunning setup refreshes the service’s search path when needed. On supported platforms, services reload or restart when idle; Windows services are not rewritten.
  • Documentation
    • Updated setup guidance, including the Windows service installation command, and clarified what to do if an installed agent does not appear.

A service unit's PATH is frozen at install, so a restart alone cannot find an
agent installed into a directory it never searched; setup supplies that PATH.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A unit file that carries a PATH the loaded daemon does not makes the next setup
run read the refresh as applied, so every path that skips the reload restores it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
A rollback restores the unit as it was read, so a concurrent install landing
between the read and the restore would otherwise be overwritten.

📝 Walkthrough

The daemon now detects newly available agent CLIs and queues an idle restart. Setup can update a service-managed daemon’s PATH and request a reload or restart. Documentation and user messages describe this behavior and platform-specific setup instructions.

Changes: Daemon harness discovery and service PATH refresh

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect new harnesses and queue restarts
src/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon/Services/RestartCoordinator.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Daemon.Tests.Unit/Services/RestartCoordinatorTests.cs
The coordinator detects available hosted-agent vendors absent from startup advertisements and queues a restart until agents are idle. Tests cover binary updates during a pending harness restart and no-op restart handling.
Compute and write refreshed service PATH values
src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/ServicePath.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/LaunchdUnit.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/LaunchdServiceManager.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/SystemdUnit.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/SystemdServiceManager.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Services/*
The service PATH logic detects newly resolvable harnesses. The launchd and systemd implementations update unit environments and handle reload failures. Tests cover PATH changes, preservation of other unit values, and rollback behavior.
Integrate PATH refresh into setup
src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/DaemonServiceCommands.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/PathRefresh.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupCommand.cs, src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupDaemonService.cs, test/Capacitor.Cli.Tests.Unit/Commands/SetupDaemonServiceTests.cs, README.md, src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/HomeViewModel.cs
Setup refreshes the service PATH when the service is up and reports the result. The documentation and local and remote notices describe harness discovery and platform-specific setup behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cac3e

The change lets setup refresh a service's PATH so newly installed agent CLIs are found. Normal paths and ordinary failures are handled with rollback. In rare cases where launchctl or systemctl cannot start during a refresh, the daemon could stay unloaded (launchd) or the unit file could be left inconsistent with what systemd loaded. Consider closing these gaps before or shortly after merge.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Let the daemon pick up a coding agent installed after it started" matches the main change. The PR adds detection of agent CLIs installed after daemon startup, a restart when no agents are running, and a service PATH refresh during setup. The linked issue #1871 asks for the same behavior. The title is specific and does not use vague terms. It does not mention the PATH refresh during setup, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support issue #1871. Restart coordination supports agents installed after daemon startup. Service PATH refresh, setup handling, launchd and systemd recovery, user messages, documentation, and tests support the requested behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1871 requires post-start agent discovery and setup PATH propagation. RestartCoordinator implements idle restart detection for newly available agent CLIs. Launchd and systemd refresh paths update the service PATH. However, SetupDaemonService and the documentation state that Windows units are not rewritten. Issue #1871 does not exclude Windows, so the setup PATH requirement is not met for Windows services.

Resolution

Implement an equivalent Windows service PATH refresh, or explicitly narrow issue #1871 to the supported platforms. Add automated coverage for the selected behavior.

Discover coding agents installed after daemon startup

🐞 Bug fix ✨ Enhancement 🧪 Tests 📝 Documentation 🕐 40+ Minutes

Grey Divider

AI Description

• Restart an idle daemon when a previously unavailable coding agent CLI appears on its PATH.
• Let setup refresh stale launchd and systemd service PATHs, preserving prior units when reload
 cannot proceed.
• Cover restart coordination, PATH rewrites, and rollback behavior with unit tests.

High-Level Assessment

The following are alternative approaches to this PR:

1. Discover agents dynamically without restarting
  • ➕ Could make newly installed agents available without interrupting the daemon.
  • ➖ Would require changing the startup-time advertisement and runtime lifecycle.
  • ➖ Would not resolve a service unit PATH that lacks the CLI directory.

Recommendation: Keep the restart-based approach: it reuses the daemon's existing startup discovery and idle-restart machinery. Refreshing stale service PATHs separately addresses the environment problem that dynamic discovery alone would not fix.

P2 Badge Restrict PATH refreshes to daemon-hosted agents

When the current PATH newly exposes Mistral Vibe but the unit PATH does not, this predicate refreshes and restarts the daemon service even though Mistral has no IHostedAgentRuntimeFactory and cannot be hosted by the daemon (DaemonRunner.LauncherPolicyVersion also classifies it as unsupported). Because the registry contains recording-only harnesses as well as hosted ones, filter this comparison to daemon-hostable vendors; otherwise rerunning setup for Vibe unnecessarily changes the service PATH and interrupts/requeues the daemon.

Leaving this as is. A recording-only CLI such as Mistral Vibe causes at most one rewrite: afterwards the unit's PATH finds it, and the next setup run compares equal. The daemon's hosted agents also inherit that PATH, so their tools resolve the way they do in your shell. Restricting the check would need a hostable-vendor list in Core that mirrors the daemon's runtime factories, which is a second registry to keep in sync.

P2 Badge Keep the manual-restart guidance for foreground daemons

For a daemon launched with the documented kcap daemon start, ForegroundNoopStrategy cannot restart it: the new coordinator handles that NoOp by setting _harnessManual and stops checking the newly installed agent. This notice nevertheless promises that the daemon will pick it up, so affected users can wait indefinitely while the agent remains unavailable; retain explicit manual-restart guidance unless supervision is known.

Fixed in 84effa4. The notice now reads: install the agent; if it does not appear, run setup again or restart the daemon. The remote variant says the same for that machine.

1. Setup can leave a daemon on its old PATH ✓ Resolved
Description
RefreshValidatedUnit writes the amended plist before bootout, but its loaded-label failure branch
can return without restoring that amendment. If bootout returns while the old job is still exiting
and bootstrap finds that label loaded, the running job can retain its old PATH while the next setup
run reads the new PATH from disk and skips the refresh.

A loaded-label refresh failure can leave the daemon using its old environment while disk state
appears successfully updated.

PR-#1269

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The manager documents that bootout may return before job exit. The refresh proceeds from a
successful bootout directly to bootstrap; bootstrap can find a loaded label and report an error,
while the loaded-label branch returns before the plist restoration. Setup subsequently compares the
current PATH against the plist's PATH rather than the loaded job's PATH.

## Issue description
A successful bootout can precede the old launchd job actually unloading. If bootstrap then finds that old label loaded, the PATH amendment can remain on disk without being loaded by the daemon, causing later setup runs to skip it.

## Recommended Fix
Wait for confirmed label unload before bootstrapping the amended plist. On an unconfirmed unload, restore the pre-amend text; preserve the amendment on bootstrap failure only when the loaded label is confirmed to have consumed it. Add a test for bootout returning before the previous job unloads.

2. Setup can postpone a pending update restart ✓ Resolved
Description
The systemd branch sends RequestRestartAsync("when-idle"). RestartCoordinator.RequestRestart
responds by setting _selfDetected = false and _whenIdle = true, which overwrites a restart the
daemon had already queued for a self-detected update. That update restart normally fires at a turn
boundary or after TurnWait; it now waits until no agents are running at all, so a busy daemon
keeps running the old binary for as long as any agent is alive.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/DaemonServiceCommands.cs[R124-127]

+                    if (systemd.SetEnvironment(id, "PATH", path) is not { } previous) return UnitRefresh.Current;

A setup restart request can overwrite an already pending update restart, delaying updates

PR-#1269

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
RequestRestart clears _selfDetected and sets _whenIdle from the request without checking
whether an update restart is already pending. In Evaluate, waitExpired needs _selfDetected,
and a when-idle request counts any agent as busy (HasAgents()). Setup now sends this request
automatically every time it changes the unit's PATH, so a pending update restart can be downgraded
without the user doing anything.

Add a test where a self-detected update is pending, a when-idle request arrives, and the restart still fires at a turn boundary or once `TurnWait` expires.

3. A failed reload can leave the daemon down unannounced ✓ Resolved
Description
RefreshPathAsync calls launchd.RefreshUnit(..., out _, amend: ...) and throws away the error,
which can say "the daemon is not loaded — run kcap daemon service start" or "launchd's state is
unclear". When the bootout succeeds but both the new bootstrap and the rollback bootstrap fail,
setup prints only the generic "could not be given your current PATH" line, so the user isn't told
their daemon is no longer running.
Code

4. An IDE launcher can trigger a reload ✓ Resolved
Description

5. Refreshing PATH can erase another setting ✓ Resolved
Description
WithEnvironmentValue replaces the entire Environment= line containing PATH, although
EnvFromUnit extracts only the first assignment from that line. When an existing systemd unit
places multiple assignments on one directive, refreshing PATH silently removes its other environment
assignments.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/SystemdUnit.cs[R146-149]

+        var index = lines.FindIndex(l => EnvFromUnit(l).ContainsKey(key));
+        if (index >= 0) {
+            lines[index] = assignment;
+        } else {
Relevance

●●● Strong

Replacing the complete Environment directive can silently delete unrelated assignments on the same
systemd line.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
EnvFromUnit splits a directive only at its first equals sign. The new writer selects that line by
the resulting key and replaces the complete line, without checking or retaining any remaining
assignments.

- src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/SystemdUnit.cs[163-173]

6. A detached daemon can miss the new PATH ✗ Dismissed
Description
RefreshPathAsync treats any restarting socket acknowledgement as proof that the daemon will
consume the rewritten systemd unit. If an installed service's socket instead belongs to a detached
daemon with the same name, its restart inherits the old process PATH, while setup keeps the
rewritten unit and reports a successful reload.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/DaemonServiceCommands.cs[R125-127]

+                    switch (await RequestRestartAsync("when-idle")) {
+                        case "restarting": return UnitRefresh.Reloaded;
+                        case "queued":     return UnitRefresh.NotLoaded;
Relevance

●● Moderate

Detached-daemon ownership is a nuanced supervisor-state issue without a closely matching historical
precedent.

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The restart socket accepts requests without establishing the caller's intended supervisor. The
detached restart strategy starts a successor without an updated PATH overlay, and setup's systemd
branch retains the new unit immediately on its acknowledgement. The existing ensure decision
explicitly uses a coarser running-process check for systemd, so that path does not establish service
ownership.

Agent prompt
The issue below was found during a code review. Follow the provided context and guidance below and implement a solution

## Issue description
A restart acknowledgement identifies an accepting daemon, not necessarily the systemd-managed process whose unit received the new PATH. A detached process can restart using its inherited environment instead.
## Fix Focus Areas
- src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/DaemonServiceCommands.cs[122-134]
## Recommended Fix
Before retaining the rewritten unit on an acknowledgement, verify that the responding daemon is the process owned by this systemd service. If ownership cannot be established, do not report a reload as applied; restore or defer the amendment while that other process is running.

Informational

7. A busy service lock tells users to reinstall ✓ Resolved
Description
RefreshStalePathAsync returns UnitRefresh.Contended when it can't get the service lock within 10
seconds, and PathLine falls through to the default branch for that outcome. Setup then tells the
user to reinstall with kcap daemon service install --replace --verify, when the cause is a
temporary conflict that simply re-running setup would clear.
Code

src/Capacitor.Cli/Commands/SetupDaemonService.cs[R83-85]

+        _ =>
+ " [yellow]![/] The daemon service could not be given your current PATH, so it may not find every harness setup found. "
+ + "Reinstall it with [cyan]kcap daemon service install --replace --verify[/]",
Relevance

●●● Strong

Contention is a transient retry condition, so recommending service reinstallation is misleading and
unnecessarily destructive.

PR-#1558

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
PathLine has no case for Contended, so the default reinstall message applies. The forced-refresh
path in the same codebase handles Contended with "another service operation is in progress. Try
again shortly."

8. Missing-agent notice promises a pickup that may not happen ✓ Resolved
Description
NoHarnessesNotice now says "Install ... and the daemon picks it up" with no other step. A daemon
started in the foreground never restarts itself (_harnessManual), and a service daemon can't see a
CLI installed into a directory its unit's PATH lacks until setup is re-run. Those users are told no
action is needed when one is.
Code

src/Capacitor.App/ViewModels/HomeViewModel.cs[R103-104]

+ ? "No coding agents were found on this machine. Install Claude Code, Codex or another supported agent and the daemon picks it up."
+        : $"No coding agents were found on {remoteMachine}. Install one there and its daemon picks it up.";
Relevance

●●● Strong

The notice incorrectly promises foreground daemons and service daemons will automatically discover
every later installation.

PR-#1781

ⓘ Recommendations generated based on similar findings in past PRs

Evidence
The coordinator stops checking for new agents once its restart strategy returns NoOp, which is what
a foreground daemon's strategy returns. The README added in this PR says a CLI outside the service's

Only an agent CLI counts as a reason to rewrite, never an IDE launcher, and a
when-idle request no longer turns a pending update into one waiting for every agent.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Restore the plist when a reload exits through an exception.

If stopForReload or a later launchctl call throws after this write, RefreshUnit returns Failed without restoring beforeAmend. The loaded job can keep its old PATH while the plist records the new one. A later setup run then sees no PATH change to apply. Restore the pre-amendment plist on failure paths that do not complete the reload.

@coderabbitai On the outside-diff comment for LaunchdServiceManager.cs:249: fixed in cac3ecb. The stop, bootout and bootstrap now run inside a catch that writes the pre-amendment plist back before rethrowing, so an exception from stopForReload or launchctl leaves the file matching what launchd loaded. Test: A_stop_that_throws_drops_the_amendment.

🟡 Minor · Restore the unit for non-InvalidOperationException reload… · SystemdServiceManager.cs:111-114

src/Capacitor.Cli/Services/SystemdServiceManager.cs:111-114
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Restore the unit for non-InvalidOperationException reload failures.

_runProcess defaults to ServiceProcess.Run, which calls Process.Start(psi) directly. That API can throw Win32Exception when systemctl cannot start. SetEnvironment catches only InvalidOperationException, so the rewritten file can remain while systemd keeps the previous unit. A later ServicePath.Refreshed call can then see no PATH difference and skip the refresh.

Suggested fix
