This PR does three things:
(a) it updates the CI
(b) it adds tests
(c) it removes the formatted sample file from the PDF, instead linking to an auxiliary, standalong file.
The latter thing may be considered a non-housekeeping thing; but then wasting all these pages for something folks will want to have machine-readable anyway does seem a bad idea, and the content is largely unmodified; we just don't throw out the majority of UDFs any more.
(This material has been part of PR #8 so far, but it doesn't really belong to it. I'll rebase PR #8 on this once it's merged, which will make the diff look a lot less cluttered)
