fix(studio): smooth tab, panel, and drag interactions - #494
Studio's tab, panel, and drag interactions stop jumping. Switching zone tabs keeps the live canvas mounted. An underline slides to the selected tab, and the zone content plays a 160ms opacity settle only when the selection moves to a different tab, so scene refreshes and repeat clicks leave the canvas alone.
The drag preview and the canvas drop outline now stay mounted for the whole drag. Changing targets updates their classes and position in place instead of rebuilding them. The preview follows the pointer and holds against the viewport edge, where it used to flip to the other side of the pointer at a fixed threshold. Disclosures, the composition slide-over and its scrim, and the device drawer share one restrained set of transitions on --ease-silk, and every one of them turns off under prefers-reduced-motion.
Why
Tab switching felt jumpy, and drag feedback reset its geometry and highlight as it crossed targets. Three browser traps caused the worst of it:
Tailwind v4's translate-x-full sets the individual CSS translate property, so a transition: transform let the slide-overs snap open and closed. They now transition translate.
Focusing the close button while its panel slid into the overflow-hidden stage scrolled that ancestor by up to 420px, which visibly jumped the stage. Focus now moves with preventScroll, both into the panel and back to its trigger.
Suppressing the content settle with animation: none during a drag made it replay when a cancelled drag lifted the suppression. The settle phase now resets to zero when a drag begins.
Where this commit came from
Nobody claimed this commit, and it had no branch or PR. It sat unpushed on a local main checkout until it turned up as "ahead 1, behind 40" and was moved here. The local trail shows how it got there:
Oct 27, authored. A Codex session started in that checkout was asked to make Studio's tab switching, drag and drop, and other interactions feel smooth and polished. It committed this change directly on local main at 09:01 PDT and closed by reporting "polished and committed locally". It never pushed or opened a PR.
Oct 31, rebased. A Claude session asked to bring the local repo back up to date rebased the commit onto c6478b9. The one conflict, in drag.rs, came from upstream 8104855, which had extracted the same touch-listener type alias under a different name. The resolution kept upstream's TouchMoveGuard. A small tab_model.rs cleanup also dropped out because 8104855 already carried it.
Nov 1, near miss. A lianli branch cut from that local main briefly carried this commit along. It was stripped before the lianli series landed as 1c2cc5a..9c97547.
Both agents commit under Bliss's git identity, so the author line reads Stefanie Jane, with a Co-Authored-By: Nova (Codex) trailer.
This PR cherry-picks the rebased commit onto 9c97547 without edits, keeping the original author and author date. None of the 49 upstream commits since c6478b9 carries an equivalent patch (git cherry lists it as unique), and none of the new studio-* motion classes or the motion spec exist upstream. Upstream touched two of the same files: phone styling in input.css, and ec8944a, which split StudioPage into a phone summary and StudioWorkspace. This commit's studio/mod.rs hunks now land inside StudioWorkspace, so the motion applies to the tablet and desktop editor, the only place that editor mounts. The cherry-pick merged without conflicts.

New coverage: three ghost-geometry cases in studio_drag_model_tests.rs (tracking to the edge inset, no jump when crossing an edge threshold in either direction, and a preview narrowed to fit a small viewport). e2e/tests/studio-motion.spec.mjs adds four browser regressions: canvas and tab geometry through rapid selection, disclosure contents and composition focus return, reduced motion in both themes, and drag feedback that stays mounted and clamps at the edge. The history fixture now isolates its rig data, and the performance spec scopes its canvas assertion to outputs.
UI cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --lib -- -D warnings natively and for wasm32-unknown-unknown, UI cargo test --locked
clean, clean, 930 passed
On f830ffe, cargo was not run locally in crates/hypercolor-ui because a Trunk dev server was live on the machine, so CI's UI job (cargo test --locked plus trunk build --release) and the E2E suite carried compilation and the new motion spec. Both passed. The rebased head was then checked locally as shown in the last row.
Notes for reviewers
CI does not run clippy on hypercolor-ui, so it was run locally on 73f7e46 (the rebase onto a61e9c6, which merged without conflicts): clean natively and for wasm32-unknown-unknown with -D warnings.
Start with the ghost placement in drag.rs and its helper ghost_position in drag_model.rs. The preview's footprint is fixed at 240 by 48 so target hints cannot shift it, and the drop outline and point now update through reactive classes and styles on one mounted element. In studio/mod.rs, the content_switch effect alternates between two identical keyframes so a second tab change restarts the settle animation, and it resets to zero while a drag is live.

Walkthrough
The Studio UI now animates workspace changes, tab indicators, disclosures, the composition panel, and drag feedback. The composition panel adds focus handling and accessibility state. Drag previews use viewport-clamped coordinates. Tests cover motion, reduced-motion preferences, panel behavior, and drag interactions.
The workspace exposes switch and drag state for motion styles. The tab strip renders one indicator positioned from the active tab’s bounds. Disclosure content remains mounted and exposes its open state. Tests cover tab geometry, disclosure behavior, reduced motion, and fixture selection.
Composition panel focus and state crates/hypercolor-ui/input.css, crates/hypercolor-ui/src/pages/studio/composition_panel.rs, crates/hypercolor-ui/src/pages/studio/stage.rs, e2e/tests/studio-motion.spec.mjs
The trigger and panel are linked by IDs and accessibility state. Opening focuses the close button. Closing restores focus to the trigger when focus was inside the panel. Escape and the scrim use the shared close handler.
Drag preview positioning and feedback crates/hypercolor-ui/src/pages/studio/drag_model.rs, crates/hypercolor-ui/src/pages/studio/drag.rs, crates/hypercolor-ui/tests/studio_drag_model_tests.rs, e2e/tests/studio-motion.spec.mjs
The drag preview follows the pointer with viewport clamping and a fixed footprint. The ghost and hint remain mounted while their visibility changes. Unit and end-to-end tests cover positioning, edge behavior, and cancellation.

Closed the clippy gap from the description. The Trunk that was running belongs to hypercolor.lighting, so cargo in this crate was safe after all. Results on f830ffe, run from crates/hypercolor-ui:
cargo clippy --lib -- -D warnings is clean. The only output is the future-incompatibility note about the proc-macro-error2 dependency.
cargo test --lib passes 177 of 177.
cargo test --test studio_drag_model_tests passes 26 of 26.
The Playwright motion spec still needs the full stack, so CI's e2e lane is the real check for it.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Match the clamp height to the rendered ghost.
ghost_position reserves 48px, but the h-12 ghost at Line 910 is 54px tall when the root font size is 18px. At the bottom edge, the ghost ends 2px from the viewport edge instead of the tested 8px inset. Use a preview height that matches the rendered element, or measure the element before clamping. Keep drag previews and drop feedback mounted so pointer movement and
changing targets do not reset their geometry or visual state. Clamp the
preview continuously at viewport edges and reserve space for its hint.
Coordinate tab selection, disclosures, and slide-overs with restrained
motion that respects reduced-motion preferences. Preserve canvas identity
and prevent focus from scrolling the stage during panel transitions.
Cover rapid selection, drag cancellation and spring loading, focus return,
and motion preferences in browser regressions. Isolate fixture rig data
and scope canvas assertions to outputs rather than retained device rows.
